WOW

MIRACLEBABY

Recap: Chayala has a brain bleed. She is taken off the ventilator and held for the first time..

Chayala is a month old. Wow! A full month. I can’t believe it. Despite the doctors’ dire predictions, she is stable so far. I have settled into a routine. Each day, I make the forty-five minute trip (at least – that’s not including traffic) from Boro Park to the NICU and sit beside Chayala’s incubator. I also spend lots of time pumping, as mother’s milk is the only food Chayala can digest. It is given to her through a feeding tube.

Today, the nurse informs me that she will be doing an eye exam on Chayala. It is standard procedure for preemies and is done once a week.

“Most preemies have something called ROP disease in their eyes,” the nurse explains, “so we check weekly to see

how the eyes are doing. Once the ROP gets to a certain level, intervention is necessary to prevent it from getting even worse.”

I watch in a mixture of fascination and horror as the nurse takes out some metal pieces. First, she inserts a round metal piece into Chayala’s eye to keep it propped open. Then she pokes her actual eye with a metal stick! I clench the edges of my chair until my knuckles are snow-white and bite down on my tongue so hard it starts bleeding. I stop myself from screaming, reaching out and shaking the nurse by the shoulders, grabbing her hands away from torturing my precious, fragile baby. I can tell the exam is very painful for Chayala. She is very much affected by it: she vomits a little while later, and her oxygen is not good for the rest of the day.

I gently stroke Chayala’s cheek, whisper to her how much

I feel so bad for my helpless little infant who has to endure so much suffering.

I love her and how sorry I am that she has to be poked and prodded so much. I feel so bad for my helpless little infant who has to endure so much suffering. And to think she will have to undergo this once a week!

Two months later:

Chayala is already 3 months old. She has gained lots of weight since birth, even though she is still much smaller than a regular newborn. It is time for Chayala’s weekly eye exam, and I am very nervous. Since they discovered the ROP disease when she was eight weeks old, it has been growing steadily worse each week. If it continues getting worse, she will need medical intervention to try to save her vision.

The nurse completes the exam while I watch in dismay. Though I’ve seen it many times before and am no longer shocked, Chayala’s pain and discomfort are evident each time, no matter how often it has been performed, and my heart aches for her.

“Both eyes are now up to level three of ROP disease,” the nurse pronounces. “At level four, we start treatment.” Uh oh. My heart beats a rapid staccato. Please, Hashem, heal Chayala’s eyes. You are the Pokeach Ivrim. Please help her be able to see properly.

Recently, I have begun wondering about leaving the hospital. Preemies usually come home around their due date, and Chayala’s is fast approaching. I

bring it up with the doctors the next time they come around.

“When do you think Chayala will be able to come home?” I ask.

“Well, she weighs enough, babies can leave once they are four pounds, so that’s not the issue. Really, though, we are waiting for her to come off the oxygen. She is stable now, true, but we would like to see more progress. When she is weaned off the oxygen we should be able to send her home.”

Aahh, the tantalizing image those words conjure in my mind: Chayala coming home! I can’t wait. My sweet baby, secure in her own home, surrounded by loving family at all times, instead of lying in a sterile hospital incubator. But first she needs to be weaned off the oxygen.

I pose the all-important question to the doctor. “Do you know why it’s taking so long for her? Is there anything that can be done to help it along?”

“We really have no idea why,” admits the doctor. “But if she is not off oxygen in the next few weeks, we’ll have to figure out a plan of action.”

The doctors are stumped at Chayala’s dependence on the oxygen at this point, and cannot figure out the issue over the next few days or weeks. Eventually, they decide, for lack of a better alternative, to just take Chayala off the oxygen and see what happens. • TO BE CONTINUED

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST. ESTHER RAPAPORT

RECAP OF CHAPTER 58: Naomi feels physically ill due to her shock and fear, and she’s afraid she won’t be able to hide things from Babbe.

In the spices factory, Bentzy and his father are nervous and suspicious after hearing about the strange journalist who’d called. Bentzy’s father decides to get the phone number where she’d called from, and call the newspaper back himself, so he could find out what it was all about.

CHAPTER FIFTY NINE

A torn page flying around on the ground in the camp, near the Wangels’ garden:

I have no energy anymore,

But I have to earn enough.

It’s impossible for me to imagine life when we are destitute— like others here.

garden from the direction of the camp. With repulsion, Wangel removed the stained paper that had stuck to his boot and crumpled it into a ball. After a minute, regretting it, he opened the paper and smoothed it out. He would find the one who had thrown trash on the ground!

But there was no name on the paper. It was a torn paper from a work hours report, and on the other side, there was Hungarian writing. Wangel wondered who he could ask to translate the words for him. Of course, Leo Sherer would be a good choice, but he might perceive it as belittling to be asked to translate two lines on a torn note. Maybe his younger daughter Eva could do it.

At that moment, his wife and two daughters entered the front gate of the manor house’s garden.

The little paper had the misfortune of getting stuck to the sole of Wangel’s left boot, as he entered the manor house’s

“Hi, Josef!”

“Hello! So, did you all enjoy yourselves in Vienna?”

“Very much,” she said, and walked into the house, kicking off her high heels. “A bit of vacation from all of…” She opened her arms in a motion that encompassed the area beyond the wall.

“Without all of this, Mother, we wouldn’t have had the money for that hotel,” her younger daughter, Helena, said as she sank into an armchair. “I’m just waiting for the day when we buy a private helicopter. These hours of traveling are abnormally exhausting!”

“How was it here in the meantime, Father?” Teresa asked.

“Fine, except for the fact that this piece of garbage was here at the entrance to our garden, and yesterday, one of those clumsy workers got the cordless phone wet. I made him fix it.”

“Who was it?” Katarina’s forehead

for three months after this! And I hope the rest of them learned their lesson from it. Helena, go and bring me the intercom, page the office, and instruct Eva Sherer to come here.”

“Why?” Helena didn’t move from her chair.

“I want her to translate something from Hungarian for me.”

“What?” his wife asked.

“This paper.”

“Why does it interest you so much?”

“What?” Josef’s head fell back against the couch with a thud. What had Bernard done now?!

“Their big son?”

“No, David himself!”

“Strange,” she remarked. “How did that happen?”

“He was busy with that disgusting pool of the skins, just as I was standing there. My clothing also got a little wet, but the workers have dealt with that already. This morning I got everything back, clean and fresh-smelling.” His face contorted in anger and disgust, and he muttered something unintelligible, before concluding, “Well, he won’t be getting a salary

Josef pursed his lips together. “I want to know who sullied our garden.”

Katarina yawned. “The wind must have blown it in here. In any case, I’m planning to sleep for a good few hours now, or at least right after lunch. Helena, go and tell Chani that we’ve arrived and that we’re waiting to eat right now!”

“I have to do that, too?” their daughter grumbled. “I’m getting Eva over here. Let Teresa go to the kitchen and tell Chani. Really! Why can’t that spoiled brat move a little?” She got up with a sigh and went out to the hallway, picked up the intercom from its base, and pressed on the green button. “Hey!” she called into it.

“Who is there?”

“It’s Elky Kush.”

“Good. Tell Eva that we’re waiting for her here at the manor house. Now.”

“Yes, Gefreiter.”

Helena hung up and put the device

which is greatly needed. By doing so, you will have the

back in its place. She returned to the living room. “Eva will be here in a few minutes, alright?”

“And the food is ready,” Teresa said, coming in right behind her sister. “The table is set, too.”

“I ate just a short while ago,” Josef said. “And I don’t have an appetite right now. Tell me, Katarina, did you meet Bernard at all? Did he end up coming to the hotel?”

“No. He wasn’t in the mood; he was too busy with tests and parties with his friends.”

“I hope he remembers not to drink.” Josef’s face clouded. “I don’t trust him completely. He is making too much noise about his project and his imaginary newspaper.”

“Everything is fine,” Katarina replied, carefully arranging her rings. “And stop being so uptight all the time. After so many years, no one will fathom what Bernard’s crazy articles are really doing, and if he blurts out a word after drinking too much, people will just think it’s all part of his delusions. Okay, whatever, I’m going to eat. Even the chef at the hotel doesn’t know how to cook like Chani does.”

Josef stretched out on the leather couch and wondered if he should call Bernard. His wife’s reassurances did little to assuage his concerns; the many years that they’d kept the secret would not help if their talented son went and blew it all up one day, in one minute that involved a few extra ounces of alcohol. Who else among those who knew the secret in the past and the present would dare drink himself drunk among strangers?

That was exactly why they held their own closed parties here, on the estate.

But Bernard had insisted on studying at the University of Vienna. He was earning good grades, but his delusional dreams of the resurrection of the Reich regime could mark him as a target by other students who were looking to shake off the glorious past. And one extra word from him was a risk that was too great to take.

Josef felt his tension mounting. He took the cordless phone in his hand, studying it suspiciously, as if a drop of smelly liquid might suddenly leak out from behind one of its buttons. He reached for his pocket phonebook to look up the number of the phone line in Bernard’s apartment.

But even before he turned to the right page, the phone in his hand rang.

“Hello?” he said gruffly. Maybe it was Bernard himself calling just in time?

“Hello.” It was a young, unfamiliar voice. “Have I reached the office of the Der Cosmos newspaper?”

“What?” Josef’s head fell back against the couch with a thud. What had Bernard done now?!

“Is this the office of Der Cosmos?”

Was this a joke, or what?

“Who exactly are you looking for?” the Hauptmann barked.

“I don’t really know…” The caller hesitated. “The journalist who is responsible for your articles. I wanted to inquire regarding something that is going to be published in your paper.”

“How do you know about articles that are going to be published before they appear?”

“Well, when we are interviewed, we understand that something is going to be written, based on the interview.”

Josef felt like he could not sit for even one second longer, and he jumped to his feet. “Who are you?” he snapped. “Who interviewed you? Bernard?”

“Hanter.”

“Hanter interviewed you? Who is that?”

“No, my name is Hanter, from Vienna.”

“What is this?” Katarina chewed on roasted meat and poured some clear chestnut wine into her goblet. “Who wrote this nonsense?”

“I have no idea,” Eva said respectfully. She was standing at the table of the Hauptmann and the two Gefreiters. It was strange to see them without their uniforms.

“And what is on the second side? A work hours report?” Teresa set aside her cloth napkin. “Where is the Jewish boy, Chani’s son?”

Meir peeked through the door of the dining hall, where he was stationed throughout the meal to make sure nothing was missing.

“Tell your mother to serve dessert already; we’re tired,” the Gefreiter told him. She turned back to Eva, who was standing at a certain angle behind her. “How many hours a day does this person work?”

“A lot,” Eva replied carefully, after a moment’s perusal.

“And it’s one of the Hungarian speakers.”

“We all speak Hungarian, even those who originate from Poland,” Eva said.

“Yes, but writing in Hungarian is more significant,” Katarina retorted. She took the dirty paper from Eva’s hand and studied the hours herself. “It really is a lot of hours! Who works so many hours a day by you?” Then she dropped the paper to the floor in disgust, closely studying the finger that had gotten a bit dirty. “Ugh, it’s full of mud. Pick it up, quickly, so it doesn’t make our floors dirty!”

Eva bent down and picked up the paper.

“So check in the office who worked all these hours last week, and report back to us about it,” Katarina said, clearly irritated.

“I’ll ask,” Eva said carefully, and nodded with respect. As far as she was concerned, she didn’t have to check anything. She’d just tell

Elky Kush that it would be a good idea for her to find a way to calm down Katarina and her husband, as quickly as possible. She turned around with the crumpled paper and left the dining hall.

At the last second, she hurried to get out of the way of Hauptmann Wangel, who stormed furiously into the dining room, holding the cordless phone.

“That Bernard has gone too far!” he shouted, and then caught himself. “Go to the kitchen, boy!” he screamed at Meir, who arrived at that moment with a beautifully prepared tray of Sacher torte.

Meir fled.

“Father, our cake!” Helena whined.

“In a minute!” he said, breathing hard. He listened to the front door close, which told him that Leo Sherer’s daughter had also finally left. Then he went over and closed both doors to the dining hall, leaving only his wife and daughters in earshot. “Did you hear? Bernard has gone too far, and if he were here now, I would take a whip and beat him! He’s started involving outsiders in writing for his newspaper!”

“He once told you that that is what he is doing,” Katarina said. “Not all of the ideas for articles are his. He shared the idea of ‘what would be if the Reich would have continued’ with a few select friends, who are sure that this is all part of his history research, and they work on the articles together.”

“But I just got a very disturbing phone call!” Josef fumed. “Someone went to interview a person, in the name of this newspaper! I didn’t get the whole story, and the call was cut off, but tell me: does Bernard have a friend named Hanter?”

DREAM IN THE SPACE YOU dream ABOUT

Design your dreအ combination of custom woodwork and textiles. Come explore how you can transform`your` space.

Hi again! So we're back this week with the goal of finishing Leah’s kitchen. I hope that you all can follow along with the process and apply it to your own homes.

Leah just couldn’t get over how beautiful her cabinets looked at the end. She messaged me after I left, saying that for now all of her cabinets are staying wide open. Leah is the sweetest and it was such a pleasure working with her!

Moving Along In the Kitchen:

PLASTIC CUTLERY AND PLATES:

What I found fascinating was that Leah keeps her cups, cutlery, and plates in a bottom cabinet. She greatly encourages her children to take what they need by themselves. Kuddos to her! I know that this would so not fly in many homes. However, since this system works for her I left it as is.

1. I placed all the cutlery in long acrylic bins. This was due to the fact that it was a long narrow space.

-If you are placing your cutlery in a higher cabinet, you will want to put it in a 10x6x5 bin. It will fit 400 forks/spoons perfectly. (Didn’t I mention that we just love the 10x6x5 acrylics?!)

2. Cups were placed on the bottom shelf which sticks out a bit so that the cups are easily accessible.

3. I did not place the plates and bowls in a bin since I didn’t feel it was necessary. However, you may do so. A popular choice for plates and bowls would be shelf risers with the bowls on bottom and plates on top.

Before After

MORNING/ COFFEE STATION:

In our initial consultation, upon examining Leah’s cabinets my first question was- Where’s the coffee? LADIES, LEAH DOESN’T DRINK COFFEE!!!! Um, Okaaaay I guess?! In this case, I wasn’t going to make a fullfledged coffee station like I do in most homes. So we used a narrow cabinet to place her morning essentials.

1. We designated Leah’s canisters that have previously held candy to place sugar, coffee, and cocoa.

2. The coffee was placed in the back for the few random times a month that she makes herself a coffee. (Why am I not getting over this?!)

3. We placed sugar and cocoa in the front because her kids drink a hot cocoa every morning.

4. Since space did not permit us to add another canister we placed tea in the back. Im not obsessed to be honest.

For big tea drinkers, I love a tea divider. It is an absolutely beautiful look.

5. Leah’s milichig dishes and mugs were placed on a higher shelf since she doesn’t use it on a regular basis.

COOKBOOKS+ VITAMINS:

Good girl that she is, Leah gives her children vitamins every day.

1. We divided everything into two categories: vitamins and medicine. Other common categories can include daily’s, kids meds, pain relievers etc.

2. I placed it in lower height acrylic bins so that she can easily grab them.

3. Cookbooks were placed in order of heights since that’s what looked best. If you have many cookbooks, its beautiful when its placed in order by color.

NON-DISPOSABLES + CUPS/BOTTLES:

A moment of silence for all the mugs and water bottles that Leah threw out. May I make a public service announcement to all day camps, our homes have more than enough fancy water bottles. Please be so kind and do not send home yet another one

1. To get a nice uniform look, we placed Leah’s fleishig plates/ bowls on a shelf with the matching mugs.

2. We threw out all baby bottles that didn’t have a corresponding cover or it's bottom. Whatever was left over was placed neatly in a 10x6x5 acrylic bin.

3. Hot cups were placed in an acrylic bin as well.

4. Leah uses her measuring cups all the time so that was placed front and center.

Thanks for following along. Stay tuned for Part 3 coming next week.

Migraine Reprieve

As is the case with severe migraine headaches, my daughter’s headaches were frequent and refused to let up, despite everything we tried. Even taking high doses of Motrin had no effect on the terrible pain.

Yet, when she began taking the Tahua LBF supplement, the stubborn pain finally lessened and then disappeared completely.

Tahua Explains: Contrary to popular belief, most headaches are the result of gas from the colon moving upward andwhen it reaches the highest place in the body - putting pressure on the head. The LBF supplement traps the gas and eliminates it, thus resolving the cause of headache sufferers and alleviating the intense pain.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QI am a driven and passionate young woman with a strong desire to eat healthy, clean and in a maintenance-like way. Meaning, I work hard to maintain my size and my health by being conscious and making mindful choices. However, lately, and I cannot pinpoint why, I indulge in self-sabotaging behaviors every single day without fail. I follow a decent and healthy plan for most of the day and then I just let go, and spiral out of control, and with a strong resolve promise to do better tomorrow. Yet when tomorrow rolls around, I repeat this again and again. I am trying to understand why a smart and controlled human being would do this to themselves and let themselves down the same rabbit hole daily? Your insight would be very appreciated.

AFrom what you describe, you are at an okay weight, which means that external motivation—such as the urgency to lose weight—is not driving your actions. Often, people who are deeply motivated by a specific goal find it easier to maintain control in the moment. For example, if you want to be a certain size for an upcoming event, you have a physical goal to reach. With no goal in sight and being that you are at an OK weight- what is your true motivator to never let go? When one is relatively content with their size, the immediate motivation to resist indulgences diminishes. This can lead to small justifications that add up over time, reinforcing self-sabotaging behaviors.

Self-sabotage is complex and can stem from several psychological factors:

1. Emotional fulfillment – Many people turn to food for comfort, especially when feeling tired, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained. Even if you are not consciously aware of it, food can serve as a temporary coping mechanism.

2. Cognitive fatigue – Decision fatigue is real. If you spend your day making disciplined food choices, by evening, your mental reserves might be depleted, making it harder to maintain control. Also, if you are way too rigid all day, many people “burst” at the end of the day.

3. Perfectionism and guilt – If you set very high standards for yourself, a small deviation might make you feel as though you have already “failed,” leading to an all-or-nothing mentality where you abandon restraint altogether, and I feel that as women, we are black and white thinkers. Once we hit the grey area, we tend to mess up all the way.

4. Subconscious fear of deprivation – If your diet feels overly restrictive, your brain may be rebelling by overcompensating later in the day.

One of the most important steps in breaking this cycle is pinpointing when and why this behavior happens.

• Is it happening at a specific time of day? Evening hours are often when willpower is weakest and comfort-seeking behaviors emerge.

• Are you physically tired when this occurs? Fatigue can lead to cravings for quick energy sources,

which often come in the form of high-calorie, processed foods.

• Are you feeling emotionally drained? Stress, boredom, or loneliness can all be triggers.

Practical steps to overcome self-sabotage

1. Reframe your mindset – Instead of viewing one indulgence as a failure, remind yourself that one choice does not define your entire progress. Shift away from an all-or-nothing mentality.

2. Identify and address emotional needs – If food is being used as a comfort mechanism, consider other ways to fulfill that need, such as journaling, meditation, deep breathing, or calling a friend.

3. Improve meal timing and composition – Ensure that your meals are balanced with sufficient protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep you satiated and minimize cravings later in the day.

4. Reduce decision fatigue – Plan meals in advance to lessen the mental burden of making choices throughout the day. Maybe treat yourself to a storebought lunch twice a week as your way of being a little self-indulging.

5. Practice mindful eating – When cravings strike, pause and ask yourself, “Am I truly hungry, or am I seeking comfort?” If it’s the latter, explore alternative solutions. Oftentimes, you can be very thirsty, or in need of a good and juicy fruit.

6. Allow flexibility in your diet – If your eating plan is too rigid, adding small, controlled indulgences earlier in the day might prevent a complete loss of control later.

7. Prioritize rest and recovery – A well-rested body and mind have stronger willpower. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and managing stress effectively.

The key to breaking self-sabotaging cycles lies not only in structured strategies but also in selfcompassion. Accept that setbacks happen, but they do not define your journey. Recognizing that you are not alone in this struggle can also be reassuring. Many people experience similar patterns, and the goal is progress, not perfection.

Congratulations to Ruchy Neuman for winning this month’s contest!

2. THE NUGGET

The Jewish people inaugurated the Mishkan for 7 days. On the 8th day, it was all ready, just one thing was missing: The Shechina. Only Aharon, whose nature was exceptionally loving, could bring the Shechina to rest in the Mishkan. His love for peace and for every Jew, accomplished more on the 8th day of the Mishkan’s dedication than in the previous 7 days! This aspect of his character also caused him to successfully draw people close to the Torah.

4. DID YOU KNOW

On Rosh Chodesh Av, Aharon passed away and was buried in a cave on a mountain called Har Hahar. This took place shortly before the Jewish people entered Eretz Yisroel.

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Aharon Hakohen was married to Elisheva the daughter of Aminadav and had 4 sons. During Galus Mitzrayim, when Moshe was not present, Aharon guided the Jewish people and reminded them of Hashem’s promise to redeem them. He served as Moshe’s spokesperson to King Pharaoh and when Hashem brought the 10 plagues, he was the messenger to carry out the first few. At Matan Torah, he was the only one allowed near the top of Har Sinai. Aharon was the first Kohen Gadol and to this day, all Kohanim trace their lineage back to him.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

We can emulate Aharon by approaching every Jew with Ahavas Yisrael, which is expressed through helping another with a physical favor. For example, if you see a fellow Jew –whether a classmate, grandmother, or stranger – schlepping a heavy load, you can offer a hand with a smile.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

What kindness can you do for someone?

Cover the foam board with fabric by laying the foam board on top of the fabric.

Fold the sides of the fabric inwards, pulling as tight as you

can, and staple the fabric on the back to hold it in place.

Going along the border, stick in 10 pins on each side of your board. Do not push them fully in, leave them sticking halfway out.

Use masking tape to attach the heart to the square.

Cut out half a heart shape from the middle of the square.

Tie one of your strings to a corner pin. Start wrapping the string around each pin going from the border to the heart, going back and forth. 7

With a pen and ruler, measure on your paper a square 4 inches x 4 inches. Cut the square out and fold it in half. -Foam Square -Stapler - Square Piece of Fabric -2 Pieces of Paper -Pen

When your string gets short enough, tie the string to a pin on

Push 18 pins all around one side of the heart, outside of the paper, and 18 pins on the other side of the heart. Remove the paper once done.

the border. Choose the next color string to use, and tie it to the same pin that the previous color was tied to. Repeat steps 7-8 with the next two colors. 8

Carefully push each pin all the way down, by putting one finger on each adjacent pin, and pushing them down at the same time.

Admire your beautiful artwork!
