AS TOLD TO RAIZY KATZ

Recap: Chani starts on the SCD diet; it is very hard for her.

CHAPTER 6

Nine eggs, separated. Check. Honey, cashew butter, real vanilla extract. Check, check, check. Now I just needed to whip up those egg whites and then fold in the rest of the mixture. I deftly combined the delicate batter and spread it into the pan. Cashew cake was one of the only “treats” Chani could have right now, and I made sure to have lots of it on hand.

Once the cake was in the oven, I moved on to my next project of the day: making homemade yogurt. Chani had just started on yogurt a week ago, and she was loving it so far. It added some variety to her daily diet and was a great option for a school lunch. Making yogurt from scratch was quite a job, though. First I had to boil up the milk in a giant pot until it reached a specific temperature; I used a food thermometer to measure it exactly. Then I had to pour it into the glass container of the yogurt maker, turn it on, and leave it for exactly twenty-four hours. At the same time the next day, I would move the glass

container of fresh yogurt as carefully as possible to the fridge, where it had to sit without being moved or banged around for another twenty-four hours. If I wanted to make Greek yogurt, I would dish some into a cheesecloth attached to the opening of a large glass jar. The whey would slowly drip out into the jar, leaving a thicker yogurt in the cheesecloth. Once the yogurt was ready, I would add in some honey and vanilla extract to flavor it. Keeping up with all the food Chani needed was a timeconsuming and continuous task. I was busy with it day and night. The only reason I kept going was because of the improvement we were slowly seeing.

“Ma, I’ve been feeling much better the past few days,” Chani remarked to me one evening, lingering at the table after supper. “I think it’s because of the diet. It makes it worth it – even though it’s so hard to keep to.”

I was happy Chani was mature enough to understand the benefits, despite the hardship. It’s not easy imposing such an extreme diet on a child, even when you know it’s best for them, so it was a huge relief that Chani willingly accepted the situation and recognized the purpose in it.

“ Mimi had clearly put in effort to accommodate Chani’s restrictions, but Chani couldn’t have any of the food she prepared.”

I did have plenty of backlash from other places, which I had not expected.

“Gitty, this is crazy,” my grandmother, a real Hungarian bobbe, told me indignantly. “Chani is malnourished and starving! You don’t put kids on diets like this!” All my explaining about the health benefits of the diet and how Chani’s stomach just couldn’t handle regular food didn’t make a dent of a difference. Each time we visited, my grandmother would try to feed Chani some “gitte zachen” to relieve her from her “starvation diet”. I was lucky Chani was old enough and smart enough to resist such efforts, as with a younger child it would have caused a real issue. Still, it was hard not to have support, and instead to be derided and scorned for it. It was hard enough for me and for Chani to stick to this diet, and we needed sympathy and understanding, not resistance and ridicule.

I did have some friends and family members who were considerate regarding the situation. They allowed me to vent about how hard it was, and then encouraged me and reminded me that I was doing what I felt was best for Chani. Sometimes, though, they tried to be helpful, but were a little misguided.

“Come over to visit, and don’t worry about bringing food for Chani - I have tons of food for her,” my sister-in-law Mimi said. When we came, she pulled out a whole bag of snacks from the gluten-free section of the grocery. She had even made a Pesachdig cake for Chani! I wasn’t sure how to navigate this sticky situation. Mimi had clearly put in effort to accommodate Chani’s restrictions, but Chani couldn’t have any of the food she prepared.

“Wow, Mimi, this is really thoughtful of you,” I said. “I really appreciate that you went out of your way to prepare special food for Chani. The thing is, Chani isn’t necessarily allowed to have some of these foods.”

“What do you mean? Isn’t it, like, a gluten-free diet? I thought you told me no flour! This is all gluten-free, you know.”

“Yes, it’s true that she can’t have flour, but she also can’t have sugar, or potatoes, or most of the preservatives added in to food from the grocery,” I attempted to explain.

I wondered if these types of situations would ever get easier to handle, or if it would always be like this. • TO BE CONTINUED

Filled with excitement, anticipation and apprehension, you begin your journey with a prayer for health.

What better way to smoothen the road ahead than applying Prenateven, a natural prenatal cream that includes all mom and baby need for the duration of the journey and beyond?

BE A PROACTIVE MOM

From the early stages, supplying your body with important vitamins is crucial for your baby’s optimal development. Vitamin D3, B12, iodine and of course the biggie, folic acid. You knew that, didn’t you? But did you know that folic acid is only a synthetic form of methyl folate? Most people’s body cannot even absorb folic acid.

Methyl folate is what you want to take. It is the natural and active form of folate and is easily absorbed by the body. It is crucial in preventing neural tube defects such as spina bifida, cleft palate, and potentially hydrocephalus (a condition where excess fluid accumulates in the brain).

The March of Dimes and numerous medical studies emphasize that taking methyl folate greatly reduces the risk of these birth defects.

It’s simple. By applying your daily smear of Prenateven, you supply your body with 800 mcg of methyl folate (the recommended daily dosage), plus 1000 IU of vitamin D3, 100 mcg of B12 and 145 mcg of iodine in each pump.

Think of it as the VIP pass to optimal development — it’s like giving your baby a safe head start while keeping you energized and healthy.

I KNOW I SHOULD, BUT I SIMPLY CAN’T!

But wait, did you say smear?

You know the importance of nurturing your little one from

the early stages, but it’s hard enough to get breakfast down, and you can’t even think of popping that dreaded morning pill too!

Which is why I said smear

As in simply smear Prenateven as directed, and voilà, you’re done with your care routine for the day! No more can’t-swallow-myvitamins guilt. Just a quality topical cream that’s got Mom and Baby fully covered. Your body absorbs all the goodness, and you don’t have to worry about that gag reflex!

Plus, topical absorption is often more effective because it skips the digestive system, ensuring your body gets the complete nutrient package without losing potency along the way.

development, Progeleven can also be your ally in emotional balance. It has the potential to help prevent postpartum depression (PPD), allowing you to step into motherhood feeling supported and grounded. How?

During the early stages, progesterone production gradually increases and keeps climbing to astronomical levels. At birth, there is an abrupt drop, nearing zero.

There is an almost complete absence of progesterone from the crucial 24-hour period following the birth, lasting up to three months postpartum.

In fact, some women literally feel this shift in their bodies and describe it as, “feeling a deep drop, almost like it completely sucked out my energy.”

INTELLIGENT CHILDREN? YES,

PLEASE!

Another crucial topic to think about from the early stages is progesterone.

Progeleven, a powerhouse progesterone cream that supports your baby’s brain development among its many other benefits, directly impacts and boosts your little one’s IQ.

Based on various studies conducted by The Royal Society of Medicine, Dr. Katherina Dalton has reported that babies of mothers who received natural Progesterone during the early stages have that extra smart advantage before they even take their first breath!

With Progeleven, you’re nurturing your baby’s cognitive growth in a naturally simple, yet most powerful way possible.

MAINTAIN

STEADY PROGESTERONE LEVELS. AVOID THE DRASTIC DROP.

Aside from helping your baby’s brain

This absence is the direct cause of PPD. By fortifying yourself with Progeleven, you counteract this drop, and with it the untold suffering of PPD.

You’re not just caring for your baby; you’re caring for yourself, too. And that’s priceless.

REVOLUTIONARY OR RELIABLE?

Although Eleven Vitality is revolutionary to the Heimish market, topical vitamin creams have been around and successfully used for decades.

Expand your horizon. Explore your options. Optimize your body’s vitamin absorption with Eleven Vitality’s exclusive vitamin creams.

Smearing a little love each day is the best selfcare ritual to nurture your well-being and your baby’s development as you travel on this special journey.

We’re here to guide you with clarity and care.

ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 47: Naomi is shocked at the label on the jar of paprika, which states that checking the spice for bugs is necessary. She wonders if this means that there are other Jews in the world.

Binyamin notices Yanku Elkovitz staring at him in the cemetery, and worries that the boy might have seen the word “Murdered” on Tatte’s kever. Knowing how dangerous it could be if people start talking about this, Binyamin rushes to clean off the word.

CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT

A note, written in the secret code that Binyamin and Naomi had made up together years earlier, was waiting for Binyamin at home at the end of the workday.

“You just got here, Binyamin.” Rechel was worried. “Again you’re taking extra hours of work? Where are you going now?”

Binyamin lowered his gaze. “Naomi asked me to come,” he said quietly.

“Naomi? What does she want?”

“She didn’t write exactly what it was about, but I’m assuming it has something to do with Kush.” He showed his mother the note that he’d just deciphered.

“I have no patience to decipher your secret codes…” His mother smiled. “She wants you to come? Now?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, so good luck then.”

“Maybe you should go to sleep in the meantime, Mamme. You look tired.”

“Maybe.” She shrugged. “We’ll see. You…you don’t look so relaxed, Binyamin.”

“I guess we won’t be relaxed until Mashiach comes, and we can sit under our fig trees and grape vines.” He smiled back. “I’m going now, Mamme, okay?”

“Do you have your permit to be outside?”

“Yes.”

“But don’t wander around for no reason, of course. Go safely and come back safely.”

Binyamin quickly covered the distance between his home and his sister’s. He knocked at the door of the small house, and Aryeh opened it.

“Hi,” Aryeh said in a friendly tone. “Nu, were you able to clean what you wanted to?”

“It’s a whole story…” Binyamin was vague. “But yes, I was able to clean it up. Thanks.”

“What was it?” Aryeh asked, just as Naomi came out from the other room, also looking questioningly at her brother.

“Something not so clear, and pretty complicated,” he said evasively. “And I had a conversation afterward with someone who said he knows who wrote it, but he won’t tell me who it is.”

“What?”

“Look, you invited me over, Naomi.” Binyamin sat down on the chair that had been prepared for him. “So you can start first. Why did you call me?”

“What I want to tell you can also be defined as ‘something not so clear, and pretty complicated.’”

“I’m all ears,” he brother said.

“So here’s a riddle: Who do you think would write such a sentence on a food package:” She closed her eyes and recited, almost verbatim: “‘There is the rare possibility of insects getting into the product after it leaves the factory. Checking is necessary.’”

Binyamin nodded. “Interesting question,” he said. “That’s what it says? Insects? And that it needs to be checked?”

“Yes.”

The two brothers-in-law exchanged glances.

“But what is this written on?” Binyamin asked. “What kind of food do we produce and send out from a factory?”

“It’s not something that we produce!” Naomi whispered. “It’s something that came from the outside! I saw it in Wangel’s kitchen.” She fiddled with the knot on her tichel, and in the dimness, she suddenly looked very much like her mother, to Binyamin’s eyes. “So, Binyamin, do you think Jews wrote it?”

“Could be,” he said slowly, and then fell silent. After a pause, he added, “Question is, which Jews.”

“From the newspapers that we get from time to time, it doesn’t seem to me that there are any living Jews left in the outside world,” Naomi said.

“Look, we don’t read all the newspapers, right? They throw us one paper every few weeks…and it is possible,” he was thinking as he spoke, “it’s very possible that there are still a few official concentration camps left, like Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen…”

“They were liquidated!” Aryeh exclaimed. “Don’t you know the stories from the older people?”

“I said like those camps,” Binyamin repeated slowly. “Maybe there are still a few labor camps left under government supervision.”

“So what’s the big secret? Why do the Wangels lie to us about it?”

“Maybe the conditions there are better, and they are afraid we’ll rebel?”

“In government camps? That’s not possible. The hatred that drips from their newspapers is frightening. It’s hard to believe that if Jews would be working for them, they’d treat them nicely. And it’s hard for me to believe that camps like those still remain in our days.” Naomi was very firm. “I’ve been thinking about this all day—believe me.”

“So what’s your guess?” Her brother stretched in his chair.

“That there are other families like the Wangels who also decided to secretly hold on to the forbidden goods: Jews,” she said bitterly. “And while we’ve been producing furs for Wangel for decades, the Nazi Hanter family is

holding Jews who produce spices for them.”

“And they let them just write such a sentence, and it gets shipped out to the world so that their secret will be given away?” Aryeh asked.

“Look, after all is said and done, it’s not…” She searched for the word. “It’s not a sentence that gives away very much, right? Assuming that I’m right, and Jews formulated it, then anyone who isn’t familiar with the Jewish laws won’t notice how obvious the emphasis on the insects is. It’s just a sentence about preserving freshness and quality and all that.”

“Yes,” Binyamin said, lines creasing his forehead. “So what are you trying to say?”

“That maybe we can make contact with them, with the Jews who work for Hanter,” she said quietly.

“What for?” Aryeh asked.

“So that…first of all, to know what is really happening.” Naomi took a deep breath.

“I agree,” Binyamin said. “For years we’ve been living with this feeling that we’re the last survivors. Maybe there are other families in the world? Maybe we can make contact and find a way to escape together… Alright, that’s already my imagination running away.” He smiled in resignation.

“Your theory really does sound interesting, Naomi. Although it’s very possible that it’s a totally innocent statement that a real goy made up, someone who has no problem with eating insects, but he’s just very into details or whatever.

I want to think about this a little.”

“And if you reach the conclusion that I’m right?” his sister asked.

“That maybe you are right,” he clarified. “Because until we look into it, we won’t know.”

She bristled. “That’s exactly what I meant.”

Her husband was the one to respond. “If we get to the conclusion that it’s worth looking into, we’ll think how to check it.”

“But wait a minute.” Binyamin drummed on the wall to his left. “Why did they write it? For whom? If it’s like we thought until today, that we are the only Jews in the world, then in their view, they are the only Jews in the world—so who are they warning about insects?”

“Maybe they are one step ahead of us,” his sister offered immediately, “and they know for years already that Wangel is hiding Jews.”

“Oh, our lives here are a known secret?” Binyamin refuted as his thumb arced in the classic questioning motion. “So we are actually in danger every minute?”

“Don’t be like that!” Naomi snapped. “The whole world doesn’t know, okay? For my part, Mr. Hanter and Mr. Wangel have been good friends since they were two years old, and for years they exchanged experiences and work methods and ways of hiding, and they help each other when it comes to the authorities, okay? Hanter revealed to his workers that we exist; Wangel preferred not to. Now does it make sense for you, or do you have any more annoying questions?”

“Don’t get angry, Naomi,” her brother said with a yawn. “I also had a very confusing day. And do you know what I think now? That maybe our two stories are somehow connected at one point.”

“Dena?” A car stopped with a slight squeal on the quiet street. Dena turned her head, forcing back her tears. “Charna!” she exclaimed hoarsely.

“What are you doing here, Dena?”

“I-I got lost.”

REBBETZIN T. TUKACHINSKY

“Lost!” Charna echoed. “Oy, I’m glad I could help you out, then!” She said something to her husband who was behind the wheel, and the car inched closer to the sidewalk. Dena opened the back door and climbed into the heated vehicle.

“Where do you have to go?”

“I don’t know,” Dena said. “To the factory, in theory.”

“We’ll be happy to take you wherever you want,” Charna offered.

“Fine, so let’s go to the factory.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to go home and recover a bit first?”

“Fine, I’ll go home.”

“Dena!” Charna chided. “Don’t say ‘yes, yes’ to whatever I suggest. Can you tell us where you want to go?”

To Eretz Yisrael, her lips mouthed, but then she said, “To my house—that’s a good idea. I really need to recover from the fright I had…”

“Oy, what happened? Did you meet some drunkards or something?”

“No, nothing like that. The streets were very quiet. But…”

“Getting lost is never a pleasant experience,” her friend said sympathetically. “Do you want us to just turn around and go to your mother-in-law?”

“No, I’ll go home, and I’ll call her to tell her that I arrived safely and everything is fine. She has my kids now, but my husband will bring them back in the evening.”

“Okay, no problem,” Charna said, and the car drove ahead.

“Hey, one minute!” Dena suddenly cried out when she saw the familiar signs. “Here’s the factory!”

“That’s right. You were very close to it.”

“And I kept going back to these streets and walking in circles?!”

“It can happen, when you’re not familiar with the area,” Charna said reassuringly.

“You know what, maybe I will get off here. Don’t laugh at me!”

“Of course I won’t laugh at you. I want you to go wherever is good for you.”

“So then I’ll get off here,” Dena said briskly and opened the door. She didn’t know if Suri, the secretary, was still there at this hour, but she had to find out what was going on here.

Maybe she had just been walking herself in circles for too long already.

Our Pride And Glory!

The Torah states:

Holy You Should Be!

By wearing immodest clothing, we distance the Shechina (Divine Presence) from us.

As the Torah states:

Immodesty should not be seen amongst you! Or Hashem will withdraw his presence from you!

When the Shechina departs, we are stripped of our protection ו''ח

Maybe this is why so many unbearable crushing tragedies, illness, tzoros, poverty have befallen us.

In the words of the Holy Chofetz Chaim Tzl in a famous letter:

“A huge fire has broken out in many places through the despicable styles which the power of impurity has unleashed”…

THIS IS WHY BLESSINGS HAVE LEFT US…

To a large degree, these loathsome styles contradict the statement of the Torah: “Your camp should be holy and there should not be found therein erveh”

Tight fitting, short, (Including Maternity Wear) flashy clothing, low cut necklines, long extravagant looking sheitels made to look as if not married, gaudy cosmetics etc. are contrary to our values and moral code, besides being the cause of other people’s sins.

Dear Sisters!

Let us wear refined clothes that are appropriate for the Jewish Princess. Let’s not lose our sense of proportion and get excited by immoral low life fashion designers!

This will cause the Shechina to reside in our midst.

This will bring many blessings upon ourselves, and ultimately bring the Geulah Sheleima א''בב

IF THEY DON'T LEARN

S S

Moshe’s teacher was definitely getting frustrated. From the moment Morah Esther had asked them to open Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad are Friends, seven-year-old Moshe had been rocking his chair back and forth. She had asked him repeatedly to stop, but that meant breaking up the story for the rest of the class. Finally, Moshe seemed to relax and

Yerucham began to read the book aloud, “Frog ran up the path to Toad’s house. He knocked on the front door.”

All at once, Moshe’s hand shot up. Slightly impatient, Morah Esther told Yerucham to pause and said, “Yes, Moshe, do you have a question?” Moshe quickly responded, “A lot of people knock on our door at night asking for tzedakah.”

“Yes, Moshe. I can imagine that is true. Thank you for sharing. Yerucham, please continue.”

Yerucham began, “There was no answer. “Toad, Toad,” shouted Frog, “wake up. It’s Spring!”

Once again, when Morah Esther glanced up from the book, Moshe was swinging his arm wildly. Obviously eager to ask a question or share something with the class. “Moshe, can you just hold that thought? Would someone else like to continue reading?” Morah Esther asked.

While Moshe might be disruptive to the rest of the class, in reality, the constant “interruptions” were the way he learns best. That’s because Moshe has ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

THE SYMPTOMS OF ADHD

ADHD is a common behavioral disorder that affects between 8-10% of school age children. Boys are three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ADHD. Dr. Richard Kingsley of KidsHealth explains, “Kids with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. They may understand what's expected of them but have trouble following through because they can't sit still, pay attention, or attend to details.”

Up until 1994, ADHD was known as Attentive Deficit Disorder or ADD. In 1994, it was renamed ADHD and broken down into three separate subtypes with specific characteristics.

Inattentive Type, with signs that include:

Difficulty with sustained tasks

Noticeable listening problems

Difficulty following directions

Tendency to lose things such as toys, notebooks, or homework

Distracted easily

Hyperactive-Impulsive Type, with signs that include:

Fidgeting or squirming

Difficulty remaining seated

Always “on the go”

Difficulty waiting for a turn in line

Excessive talking

Problems with interrupting and intruding

The third type of ADHD is a combination of inattentive type and hyperactive-impulsive type and is the most common form of ADHD.

The New York Times explains that in order to be diagnosed with ADHD, children should have at least 6 attention symptoms or 6 activity and impulsivity symptoms -- to a degree beyond what would be expected for children their age.

The symptoms must be present for at least 6 months, observable in 2 or more settings, and not caused by another problem. The symptoms must be severe enough to cause significant difficulties. Often, parents of children with ADHD are exhausted and frustrated.

READING AND ADHD

The most important thing to be aware of when parenting or teaching children with ADHD is that they are not “acting out.” Rather, it is difficult for these children to control their behavior without either medication or behavioral modification. Only a psychiatrist can prescribe medicine, but as an educator (or a parent) there are plenty of behavioral modifications you can implement in order to help a child become more attentive when reading or performing another activity that requires concentration.

Encourage fidgeting: Though this sounds

counter-intuitive, children with ADHD benefit from distractions. In reality, it is not that they cannot focus – instead they focus on everything. So, give them a pencil to tap or a kush ball to squeeze while they are reading. Remember these are students who are designed to focus on more than one thing at once. By providing them with the second activity in addition to reading, they are no longer looking for what else they could be doing.

Provide breaks in reading: In a classroom setting, this method would be very frustrating to those students who are focused on the text. However, when reading in small groups or individually, it is great to have a child break and tell you a story that is related to the reading. This will help them concentrate on the story when you get back to it. After you finish reading, ask comprehension questions. You’ll be surprised how much the student retained.

Engage other areas of their brain: While the child is reading, encourage him to paint a picture in his mind. This will stimulate the optical region of his brain. After a few minutes, ask him to share what picture he visualized. This will allow him to have multiple focuses, but remain on the task at hand: reading. In addition, you can encourage the child to take notes while reading. Note taking requires motor skills and hand-eye- coordination. Again, this technique allows the child multiple centers of concentration while still reading.

Utilize books on tape: Reading a book while a tape plays is a great way to give a child with ADHD a multi-sensory experience. You can use books on tape if available or you can read to him yourself, while he reads along aloud.

Break assignments into manageable piece: No one has limitless attention spans; however, children with ADHD have shorter attention spans than most people. With that in mind, help your child split up the reading into many smaller parts. Providing breaks in the reading will allow your child to regroup and refocus.

Children with ADHD often get so frustrated by the regular routines that they believe that they will never read. If we embrace children with ADHD and understand that their attention is not less focused, but rather multi-focused, they can successfully gain the confidence to read. I know – I’ve seen it happen.

SOUP SEASON

A warm, hearty soup is all you need on a chilly winter night. Enjoy these easy and delicious recipes that are perfect for the season. RECIPES, STYLING & PHOTOGRAPHY

EASY WHITE CREAM SOUP

When you want to throw together something quick, easy, and satisfying - this is just the thing. With the umami from the garlic and flavor from the root veggies, this white cream soup will become your new go-to fave.

Ingredients:

Oil, for frying

1 white onion, diced

6 cloves garlic, diced

1-2 stalks celery, diced

1 green or yellow zucchini, peeled and cubed

2 yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed

1- 24 oz. bag frozen cauliflower

1 tablespoon salt, or to taste

½ teaspoon white pepper

8 cups water, mixed with 2 tablespoons chicken soup mix

Directions:

1. Heat oil in a large soup pot over medium high heat.

2. Add the onion and saute for 5 minutes until translucent. Add the rest of the vegetables, as well as salt and pepper. Saute for 15 minutes until softened.

3. Add the water (you can substitute 2-3 cups of the water with chicken soup).

4. Bring to a boil. Lower heat and cook on low medium heat for 45 minutes-1 hour.

5. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth. Serve.

RESTAURANT-STYLE FRENCH ONION SOUP

It’s a classic favorite, and for good reason! Hearty, cheesy, and delicious - this soup is a special treat!

Ingredients:

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

4 medium white onions, thinly sliced

1 ½ teaspoons salt

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

½ teaspoon granulated sugar

1½ cups white wine

8 cups water

2 tablespoons soup mix, optional for added flavor

2 cloves garlic, crushed Baguette or focaccia, cut into slices or cubes for topping Mozzarella cheese, for topping (slices work best)

Directions:

1. In a large pot, melt 4-5 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Add the onions and close the lid. Cook until softened, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes

2. Add the salt, pepper, and sugar and continue to cook for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are deep golden brown and caramelized. Slightly reduce the heat if the onions brown too quickly. You can add some oil if you like.

3. Add the wine, water, beef soup mix, and crushed garlic.

4. Cook until the broth is thickened, for about 15-20 minutes. Adjust seasoning to taste.

5. Set your oven to broil.

6. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and top with sliced baguette or bread croutons. Add the mozzarella cheese on top of the bread and place the bowls in the oven (you can add additional cheese in the soup as well).

7. Broil for 2-3 minutes (watch carefully) until the cheese is golden brown and melted.

8. Carefully remove from the oven (plates will be hot) and serve immediately.

MORNING FOCACCIA

This morning focaccia was specifically designed for working mothers, or those strapped in time when the kids come home. You simply prep it in the morning, and allow the dough to rest in the fridge all day, yielding extra-pillowy and airy focaccia. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

4 cups all-purpose-flour

2 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons active dry yeast

2 cups lukewarm water

Oil, for drizzling flaky sea salt, such as Maldon 6-7 cloves garlic, sliced in halves

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and instant yeast. Add the water. Using a rubber spatula, mix until the liquid is absorbed and the ingredients form a sticky dough ball. Line a 9x13 pan with parchment paper. Drizzle some oil on the bottom of the pan. Slightly stretch the dough in the baking pan (it doesn’t have to come to the sides). Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes.

2. Place the pan in the refrigerator for 7-8 hours or overnight.

3. When ready to bake, remove from the refrigerator and let the dough come to room temperature (about 20 minutes).

4. Preheat your oven to 425°.

5. Drizzle some oil on top of the dough.

6. Using all of your fingers, press straight down to create deep dimples. If necessary, gently stretch the dough as you dimple to allow the dough to fill the pan. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and press in garlic cloves all around.

7. Transfer the pan to the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the underside is golden and crisp. Return to the oven at 475-500° for a couple of minutes if you prefer a more golden brown crust.

8. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. You can also toast them up into yummy croutons for soup or salad.

TIP: To store the focaccia: Transfer it to an airtight bag or container and store it at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QQ: I have recently been very nauseous and I need some help desperately. Please let me know if you have some natural tips to help me out over the next few weeks!

AI am assuming that the nausea that you are referring to is due to a condition caused by hormonal changes, with heightened senses, or a sensitive stomach. Thankfully, there are several natural ways to ease your symptoms and feel more comfortable.

1. Eat Small, Frequent Meals

One of the most effective strategies is eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. An empty stomach can make nausea worse, so aim to eat something every two to three hours. Keeping portions small helps avoid overwhelming your digestive system, which is more sensitive during this stage. The second your stomach feels empty and the feelings of hunger arises, the nausea intensifies, so try to eat before the nausea spikes.

2. Do You Need Extra Calories?

Focus on nutrient-dense foods rather than larger portions. Prioritize quality over quantity— foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein will nourish you without overloading your stomach. Aim for protein rich foods. An egg for instance is small, but can really curb your hunger and satisfy you. When that happens, nausea can abate.

3. Ginger: A Trusted Remedy

Ginger is a natural anti-nausea superstar. Studies show it can reduce nausea and vomiting. Try these ginger options: Sip on ginger tea or ginger-infused water. Snack on ginger cookies made with real ginger. Use ginger chews or lozenges for on-the-go relief.

4. Lemon and Other Citrus Scents

Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges can be refreshing and calming for nausea. Keep a sliced lemon nearby to smell when nausea hits, or try adding a slice to your water. Eating citrus fruits can also help if your stomach can tolerate them.

5. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can worsen nausea. Sip on water throughout the day, and if plain water is unappealing, try infusing it with cucumber, mint, or a splash of fruit juice. Some women find electrolyte drinks helpful, but check the labels to avoid added sugars or artificial sweeteners.

6. Include Bland, Easy-to-Digest Foods

Bland foods can be your best friends during this time. Options like crackers, plain rice, applesauce, and toast are gentle on your stomach and can help settle queasiness. Keep crackers by your bedside to nibble on before getting up in the morning.

7. Peppermint

The scent or taste of peppermint can soothe nausea. Sip peppermint tea or keep peppermint essential oil handy to sniff when waves of nausea strike.

8. Acupressure Bands

Sea bands, which apply gentle pressure to your wrist’s acupressure point (P6), are a drug-free way to reduce nausea. Many women find them effective and easy to use.

9. Relaxation and Rest

Stress and fatigue can exacerbate nausea. Make time for rest and relaxation, whether it’s a quick nap, deep-breathing exercises, or light stretching. Prioritize self-care and listen to your body.

10. Avoid Triggers

Pay attention to foods, smells, or environments that make your nausea worse. Fatty, spicy, or overly rich foods are common culprits, as are strong odors like perfumes or cooking smells. If you’re unable to keep food or liquids down, losing weight, or feeling dehydrated, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

2. THE NUGGET

Sara went through difficult times in her life, including being taken captive by Pharaoh first and then Avimelech. Despite the challenges she went through, the days of her life were equally good in the sense that she filled them all with serving Hashem completely. And that is why the Torah says “This was the life of Sara,” because her life wasn’t about what she physically went through, but about her spiritual life. This included how she fulfilled the 3 Mitzvos specifically connected to women: Shabbos candles, Challah, and Having a Jewish Family.

4. FUN FACT

Sara was also called by the name Yiskah which comes from the word in Hebrew “to see,” because she saw with Ruach HaKodesh. (Megillah 14a)

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Sara, the wife of Avraham, was the first of our Imahos and a Neviah, (of which there are seven in the Torah.) After being childless for many years, with great self-sacrifice she offered her maid, Hagar, as a wife to Avraham. Finally, at the age of 90, she was blessed with her own child, Yitzchak, who was to be the continuation of the Jewish nation.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

Difficulties may come up in our lives, but rather than focus on them, we can be like Sara and choose to focus on living life – and true life is Torah and Mitzvos. For example, if you feel unimportant because your family can’t afford as many gadgets and new clothing as some of your friends, try to re-focus: remember that true life is not about the physical things we have, but the Mitzvos we do.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

What is one additional Mitzvah you can fill your day with?
