The importance of dancing on the ageing body

Whether it be a preventative intervention or a form of rehabilitation, there are boundless benefits of dance on the ageing body.

Gwen Korebrits, CEO of the Dance Health Alliance, says dance is a transformative and powerful activity which combines physical movement with the emotional connection of a shared, social experience.

“Not only does dance improve general levels of health such as flexibility, muscular and strength, it activates important areas of the brain which aid long-term cognitive function,” she said.

”Dancing helps promote new brain synapse connections and cognitive reserve, which helps slow the rate of brain deterioration.

”This has proven to be extremely beneficial for individuals experiencing cognitive disorders such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Gwen said dance was key to helping the brain release memories and unlocking our desire to move.

“The combination of music and movement inspires out younger self to make an appearance,” Gwen said.

”I love that the Dance Health Alliance’s DanceMoves programme doesn’t require any dance experience - it’s a fun and safe way to maintain physical, mental and social health!”

As we age, it can be easy to lose confidence in our changing bodies.

Falling is one of the most feared aspects of ageing.

Human balance depends on our ability to control the movement of our bodies - abilities which decline as we age, increasing susceptibility to falling.

“The great news is the Dance Health Alliance’s classes can significantly help reduce the risk of fall, through improved focus, leg sensation, lower limb strength, reaction time and postural stability,” Gwen said.

”Increased confidence not only helps reduce the risk falls, but also helps improve many other areas of life such as the skills and confidence needed to drive, or the ability to keep up with young grandkids!

”This in turn helps improve one’s overall independence and quality of life!”
