ryde murder trial sensationally postponed

The trial of a Brazilian man accused of murdering ryde businesswoman Cecilia Haddad (38) is expected to be delayed by months after he sensationally sacked his defence team on Wednesday.

Accused killer Mario Marcelo Santoro’s trial in a Rio federal court over the alleged 2018 murder was due to commence this week and NSW detectives had flown to Rio to give evidence.

“We remain committed to the process and this happens in Australia too, so we’ll be there next time,” NSW Police Inspector John Edwards said in the courtroom.

It is alleged forty year old Santoro strangled Cecilia Haddad in the kitchen of her Ryde apartment in April and fled to Brazil hours after her body was spotted by kayakers in the Lane

Detectives launched a murder investigation days later when her abandoned red Fiat car was found at West Ryde railway station.

Santoro was named as a key suspect in the murder and in July, Brazilian police swooped on him at his sister’s Rio apartment.

He has since been held in Rio’s notorious Benfica Prison.

The pair attended university together in Brazil and Cecilia had moved to Australia more than a decade ago, first living in Perth.

In 2016 she relocated to Syd- ney where she worked in mining and logistics.

The Haddad family said Cecilia had fallen into an emotionally abusive relationship and was fearful of Santoro, who refused to leave her home and stalked her in public.

Her brother Muller Haddad had flown to Rio for the trial and said his sister’s death had “completely devastated” the family.

“We miss her so much,” he said.

If convicted, Santoro faces a 30-year sentence but will serve no time in Australia, as Brazil does not extradite its citizens.
