How is it possible that the season is coming to a close? It seems like just yesterday we were anxiously awaiting your return! This season has blessed us with so many new faces--those who took the long way via Florida or Arizona. The old saying is true: Doesn’t matter how you got here, as long as you’ll come back!

And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

While this may be our last newspaper of the season, that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! We stay active with our Converted Texans throughout the summer, kicking off the off-season with our Converted Texan Corral April 13. Our Summer Supper Club will begin in May, and we have several tours and field trips planned for those who like to stay on the go. Planning for next season has already begun, so we’ll be ready for you in the fall with new ideas, events, and excursions! From all of us at Welcome Home RGV, we wish you the safest of travels, a wonderful summer, and a quick return. For those of you who aren’t going anywhere, get ready for an exciting summer!

If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!

John and Joyce Crose

This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.

It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!

Center RV Park, Pharr South, FunN-Sun, Alamo Palms, Greengage Grove, Sunshine Estates, Llano Grande, Trophy Gardens, Tropic Winds, Adobe Wells, and Victoria Palms.

The entries touted selfless acts of volunteerism, fundraising, and entertaining--numerous wonderful examples of Winter Texans making life a little better for others.

At Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna, a small campaign began to take hold to nominate one couple in particular--John and Joyce Crose.

The Croses founded the “Padeux Social Club,” a group dedicated to having fun with a purpose.

“Everything we do is geared towards kids,” says John.

Four years ago, they began raising funds to send local children to summer camp. They expanded support to local individuals and

families in need, including a woman and child escaping a domestic violence situation, a Donna police investigator whose family lost their house to a fire, and a single mother struggling to provide for her children.

“The kindness of the great people in the RGV is why we love it here,” said Tom Hiles, one of the Victoria Palms residents who nominated the Croses, “John and Joyce Crose of the Padeux Social Club are a perfect example.”

The Croses were announced as the winners of the first Winter Texan of the Year award March 1. They were presented with a certificate, flowers, and goodie bags filled with Winter Texan gear, including thermal cups embossed with “Winter Texan of the Year.”

In addition to the recognition, the couple won tickets to

Upon accepting, the Croses humbly thanked the residents of Victoria Palms for their support. “We couldn’t do any of it without our friends,” Joyce said after the presentation, as people lined up to offer congratulations.

The following Saturday, the Croses were back at it, serving up pastalaya to over a hundred ticketholders, hosting games like Drinko and enjoying a poolside performance by CanAm.

This season, the Croses hosted four events, with another planned for late March. In total, this year, John estimates they’ve raised over $5,000. “We’re going to continue having fun helping people.” •

Sleep in Singular Style at These Oklahoma Getaways

From birdhouse cottages to Atomic-Age motels, there’s no shortage of fun overnight stays

T ravelers wanting to break away from the standard hotel experience will find unique places to hit the pillow across Oklahoma.

Only a 10-minute departure from Interstate 35 in Oklahoma’s southcentral region, Lake Murray State Park near Ardmore provides a couple of unconventional lodging options. Three tiny cabins situated along the lake’s shore offer stunning views and cozy, private settings, with vacationfriendly features like spacious kitchens and large porches. Just north of the the park’s sleek, modern lodge, visitors also will find the Lake Murray Floating Cabins, where you can travel from the sofa to the water’s edge in just a few steps.

In the picturesque southwestern town of Medicine Park, travelers’ dreams take flight at the Birdhouse Cottages. Built to resemble--you guessed it--human-sized birdhouses, each of these three colorfully appointed abodes overlooks Bath Lake and the surrounding Wichita Mountains. Their central downtown location also means shopping and restaurants are within easy walking distance. But for those

who want to work up a sweat, the trails in the adjacent Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge offer some of the region’s most scenic mountain biking and hiking.

Mother Road enthusiasts will find a retro-glam stopover at the Classen Inn in Oklahoma City. Here, motelstyle digs get an elevated makeover, with hip, comfortable rooms and an

on-site superette that stocks snacks, beer, wine, and other goodies. Route 66 road trippers in Tulsa will want to check out Buck’s Cosmic Crash Pad. Located behind Buck Atom’s Comic Curios--a must-stop gift shop--and the 21-foot space-cowboy muffler man it’s named for, this threebedroom bungalow accommodates travelers in a “living gallery” of comforting kitsch, where much of the art on display can be purchased. Within the rolling plains of Osage County, downtown Pawhuska is a popular destination. The Frontier Hotel gives visitors a front-row starting point to the area’s Tallgrass Prairie and internationally acclaimed Pioneer Woman attractions, which include a mercantile, pizza parlor, lodging, and ranch tours. Built in 1912, the Frontier is a triangle-shaped building in the center of town that originally housed business offices and retail stores. Just a few years ago, this historic landmark was resurrected with 20 Art-Decoinspired luxury guest rooms. To learn more about Oklahoma and to order free travel guides, visit TravelOK.com. •

Y’all are A-ma-zing!

At The Lamb’s Loom, we are so grateful for all of our Winter Texan friends who come visit every season! You volunteer here during the “winter” and work up handmade items for our Donation Chest yearround! Whether you bring them here with you the next season or mail them during the year, we know they all go to bless and encourage another person. For those who give financially, thank you so much for your support. To all of our new friends who found us this year, what a blessing to meet you all! We look forward to seeing y’all next year.

To everyone who gave this year, a very special thank you from all of the mission groups we work with. In 2022, over 5,600 items were sent out across the world. Twentyfour groups were served in 2022-from South Texas to groups in several states across Mexico, many groups here in the U.S., and four local breast cancer clinics. We are blessed to hear stories of encouragement given to someone in the form of a shawl, of comfort to a family with warm hats, and of joy for a sweet child gifted with a new, handmade doll. It’s all God, passing out love and hugs in every stitch!

As this season winds down for all of you, we wish you safe travels home. It has been wonderful to see so many of you this year and to share a little sit-n-knit time together. We hope you know how much you are appreciated by so many people here in South Texas. It is a better place because of how

much you pour of yourselves into this little corner of the world. Your volunteering, in so many ways, is just a-ma-zing! Plus, we all know that when you drive south, you are the ones pulling a few cool breezes our way. Otherwise, we would stay at 100 degrees forever!

We love hearing from you, and there are lots of ways to stay in

Seeing Red for the Right Reason on the La Floresta Golf Course

It was donuts and golf on Valentine’s Day and lots of red on the golf course. The wind whips across the golf course as residents of La Floresta tee off! Today we are playing a Mixed Scramble: Best Ball. With such strong winds, the ball either flies over the green or stops short, depending on the direction of the wind and the hole the golfer is on. No hole-in-one happened on this day, but our golfers got a few birdies.

Don Tufnell and Marilyn Walters won the Scramble. •

Honoring Customs and Border Protection Agent Raul H. Gonzalez Jr.

In the February 22 issue of Welcome Home Winter Texan, we shared a story about the residents of Chimney Park RV Resort and the close relationship they have forged over the years with the men and women of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. CBP launches their patrol boats at the Resort’s riverside location and station agents there; Chimney Park residents sincerely appreciate their presence and their protection.

That February story centered upon Raul H. Gonzalez Jr., a young CBP agent who gave his life in December when the 4-wheeler he was driving-while on patrol--hit an unlit fence.

Jose Rosa, a retired law enforcement officer, and his wife, Lisa, moved from Florida to Chimney Park three years ago to be near their daughter, Shae Marie, a boat captain for CBP. A few weeks after Agent Gonzalez’ passing, Jose saw a small white cross marking the spot where

the accident occurred. He decided this spot where the young agent “ended his watch” should be marked by a larger cross.

Fellow Chimney Park resident Ralph Spencer, a retired firefighter, and Jose made the memorial cross. Gigi Nelson, another Chimney Park resident and the wife of a retired firefighter, painted and lettered it.

James Kropenske, Chimney Park activity director, organized an informal memorial service. Chimney Park residents and a group of CBP agents attended the event as they placed the cross, lovingly made to honor Agent Gonzalez. •

Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen has been involved with the ride since 2000 when three couples--Gerry and Pat Bradley, Buzz and Vonnie Jones, and Boyd and Marge Mallot--started sponsoring a rest stop for riders. The Park has continued sponsoring a rest stop ever since. In 2009, Russ Manhard took over chairing the rest stop for our Park. Through the years, riders and our rest-stop volunteers have formed many friendships.

Riders always comment on the great food and warm welcome they receive at the Palm Gardens rest stop. Who can blame them? The week before the race, residents are busy saving pickle juice and baking cookies to supplement the

hot dogs, fruit, ice cream, water, and other goodies at the stop. This is made possible through generous donations from Park residents and management and local businesses. Saturday, we were happy to provide food and a place to rest for approximately 300 riders. The Park has won the award for Best Rest Stop several times over the years. In addition to having a rest stop, the Park also has several riders who take part in the ride. Dale Aalderink has taken part in the ride for the past 14 years. Dale rode 50 miles in the event this year. His rider number was 86, which also happens to match his age. •

Rugged Cowboys Serve Cute Cowgirls at 2023 Paradise Park Luncheon

E

very February for several decades, Paradise Park in McAllen hosts a Ladies’ Luncheon in our park. We open it up to ladies outside our park, as well. This year’s theme was Bows to Boots, We’re Cowgirl Cute in Texas.

What can you expect to experience when attending one of our luncheons?

You’ll see a creatively decorated hall, enjoy some form of entertainment, be treated to a lunch served by men from our park, and see a beautiful handmade quilt (or two) to be raffled off. The quilts are handcrafted and donated by our own talented quiltladies group!

This year’s luncheon theme began to take shape in the craft room as many of the ladies began to share their ideas with each other. Soon, different committees were formed, and people in the park stepped up to volunteer their time and talents. Many women worked over the summer gathering up and making westernthemed items. A big thank you to our own Texas Border Patrol; they allowed

us to recycle and reuse their discarded horseshoes, which worked perfectly as a part of our table centerpieces. Many volunteer hours went into painting the props and backdrops for our hilarious skit, “The Conestoga Wagon.” To add to the fun, many of the ladies donned western wear of all kinds.

Our servers, dressed as rugged cowboys, served a great lunch to 154 hungry cowgirl attendees. The “grub”

consisted of a delicious hamburger steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, and carrot cake with cream-cheese frosting, all made by our volunteer cooking crew.

Over 120 gifts from our generous residents were donated to give out as door prizes, and the ladies were also able to try their luck at winning one of the beautiful quilts by purchasing tickets. We can hardly wait until

next year’s luncheon in February. The theme for that event will be A Victorian Tea. The actual date will be determined at a later date. We would love to extend an invitation for ladies from other parks to join us next year. Come as you are or dress up in Victorian dresses, hats, fascinators, and jewelry, enjoy a nice cup of tea, and have lunch with the ladies of Paradise Park in McAllen! •

Tropic Star Hosts Horseshoes for Golden Age Olympics

T he Golden Age Olympics, hosted annually by McAllen Parks and Recreation, encompasses a variety of sports and activities throughout the Winter Texan season.

Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr is the annual host of the horseshoes category. The park is home to 10 well-maintained pits and an active Horseshoes Club, meeting each weekday morning to play.

In February, players from eight RV parks-- Tropic Star, Paradise South, Trophy Gardens, Casa del Valle, Casa del Sol, Tip o’ Texas, VIP La Feria, and Alamo Rec Veh Park--took part in the tournament.

Dan McGuire, Tropic Star horseshoe coordinator, not only managed the entire event (alongside McAllen Parks and Rec) but also competed. “I enjoy the competition; it’s fun to win,” he said.

McGuire took gold in the Men’s 40 Percent Group.

In the Men’s 50 Percent Group, Tom Routh of Tip O’ Texas—who is ranked #4 in the world--took the gold. In the women’s division, Marlys

Timm of Trophy Gardens took gold in the 25 Percent Group.

Karen Olson, 82, of Tropic Star, took part in the women’s division and was thrilled to score a ringer after not having played in about 30 years. She is carrying on the legacy of her father, Ralph Kautc. He was an active player at Tropic Star.

Olson took bronze in the Women’s 10 Percent Group, placing behind Carolyn Hall (gold) of Alamo Rec and Vicky Chilcoat (silver) of Tropic Star. •

Hundreds of Teddy Bears Spread Love, Comfort Across the RGV

March 6, Bonham’s Bears sponsored a teddy bear giveaway at the Green Bay South Clubhouse in La Feria. First responders and organizations who help children in crisis were invited to enjoy light refreshments and free teddy bears. We gave 450 teddy bears to eight organizations. A ninth organization, Loaves and Fishes, was dealing with a COVID outbreak and asked to pick up their teddy bears later.

During 2022, we also gave away 274 pet pillows to the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society under our Scraps for Scruffy Project. Bonham’s Bears is an all-volunteer organization based at Green Bay South, but we have volunteers from Park Place, Rio Valley Estates, and Citrus Village.

Here are some descriptions of how the teddy bears and pet pillows help.

La Feria Fire and Police: It’s good to give children something to hang on to when they’re scared. We want to make a bad day better. The police carry the teddy bears in their cars and need them to give at Christmas time.

Family Crisis Center: We give away all the teddy bears we receive. Children often go to shelters with nothing, so they get teddy bears for comfort. At our Repeat Performance store, located at 124 W. Jackson in Harlingen, you can drop off donations. Our clients get vouchers to get items free from the store. We operate shelters in Brownsville, McAllen, and Harlingen. When our shelters are full, we get help from Loaves and Fishes.

Harlingen Police: The teddy bears help form a connection between toys and police. We use teddy bears to comfort children at accident scenes, and we drop off the teddy bears and toys at the Family Crisis Center. We also use the teddy bears in presentations. One homicide officer spoke of having to give death notifications to families. Children see strangers with guns and hear the news that a loved one will never return. They are scared and traumatized. We use the teddy bears to create a positive outlook.

Children’s Bereavement Center: The Children’s Bereavement Center is free. Besides the one in Harlingen, there was recently a grand opening of a 10,000-square-foot center in

McAllen. Trained counselors work with children long-term (up to 24 years old) and also support the whole family/caregiver. We put the teddy bears in our “Buddy Barn,” where children can pick a toy and take it home with them.

Ronald McDonald House: We have merged with the Ronald McDonald House in Corpus Christi and are now Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Texas. We closed the external house in Harlingen but kept the Family Room at Valley Baptist Medical Center and operate a larger Family Room at South Texas Health System Children’s (Hospital) in Edinburg. Families can get coffee and snacks and have a chance to re-boot, then quickly and easily visit with the patient. We give the teddy bears on holidays, birthdays, and as part of a “cheer up” basket.

Cameron County Children’s Advocacy Center (CCCAC): The CCCAC carefully and professionally interviews abused children and shares the interviews with other professionals (police, social workers, legal workers, etc.) so children don’t have to repeat their traumatic experience to multiple interested organizations. To show you how helpful the teddy bears are, one adult woman still treasures the teddy bear she got as a child.

Monica’s House is named after Monica Castille, a five-year-old abused child who died from injuries. Maggie’s House is named after Maggie Whitman, a baby who did not survive her babysitter’s abuse. In Raymondville, a yet unnamed house is expected to be named after an abused Raymondville boy.

Humane Society: We are excited to get pet pillows; the animals love not lying on hard floors. We are the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society and take in pets from Harlingen--and soon from Mission--because these two cities have contracts that fund the “no-kill” Humane Society. We offer pet adoptions, low-cost monthly vaccinations, and services provided by a part-time veterinarian.

Harlingen Fire: Harlingen firefighters responded to an emergency at Green Bay South and did not have the chance to talk to us. We were fortunate that they were so near and so willing to help, demonstrating that they, indeed, are first responders. After handling the emergency, the firefighters returned and received their teddy bears. •

Furniture that Built the Valley will share the story of three South Texas families through a piece of furniture donated from each family.

A spindled, four-poster bed from the Vela family will be on display. This bed was passed down several generations from Salvador and Leonor Vela, who were parents of Macedonio Vela, the founder of Laguna Seca Ranch, just north of Edinburg.

T he International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) in McAllen is hosting the 15th Annual Young at Art exhibition, presented in conjunction with McAllen ISD. This exhibition features student artwork and celebrates National Youth Art Month, which emphasizes the value of art education for all children. Young at Art includes original works of art created by McAllen ISD students from 6th through 12th grades.

Beginning in the 1960s, schools across the United States have recognized the importance of art education during the month of March. Art educators know visual arts experiences foster the development of skills in problem solving, creativity, observation, and communication. During March, special exhibitions like the MISD Young at Art showcase those abilities and allow us to appreciate the excellent work our children create.

“Young at Art is one of the most visible ways the museum supports and promotes art education in our schools,” said Ann Fortescue, president and executive director at

IMAS. “It’s an honor for IMAS to showcase the students’ creativity and the enthusiastic support of their teachers through this partnership, and we’re delighted to be able to share the talents of these young artists with our community.”

The Young at Art exhibition will be on display at the IMAS through April 2 and is comprised of nearly 200 original works of art. The exhibit is included with regular admission. Visit theimasonline.org for more information. •

I see you out there searching. You’re out there looking for something more. A nugget of truth. A revelation. A spiritual prize. Some grand discovery of Biblical proportions. You are digging to find it. You feel like you’re just inches away from a breakthrough. I see you watching someone who appears to have more knowledge and wisdom than you. Someone who has garnered a following because the sensational things he or she says resonates with what so many long to hear. I see you compromise as you buy into unbiblical doctrines in favor of enticing, ear-tickling, bold and passion-filled emotional decrees.

We all love to be in the know. We all love to be the star of the show. If only you can obtain this thing you are looking for, then you can prove to yourself and others that you were right all along, that you were ahead of the game. It’s like when you are the first to hear some spicy gossip and, as a result, you get to be the first to spread the news, like an amateur news anchor. We’ve all been in that position and can relate to the powerful feeling that comes from knowing we were the ones who broke the big story

Perspectives Looking Past the Truth

of the day. So some of us go and repeatedly chase after that high. And in that chase, most of us find ourselves running right past the truth, the truth which is the real news, the ONLY news worth spreading, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Why do we run past this truth? Why do we insist on looking for more? Why is Jesus and the salvation He provides not enough to satisfy some of us? So many claim to love Him. They earnestly claim to believe in Him. Just like I’ve seen you do. Yet your actions (and, at many times, your words) say otherwise. When a person has truly surrendered to Jesus Christ and has been born again, he or she will stop looking for more.

What God so lovingly and mercifully gives us through the sacred canon of scripture, found in the 66 books of the Holy Bible, will be sufficient--more than sufficient-to satisfy our souls and bring us to the knowledge and understanding that leads to true wisdom. Our searching outside of Christ will come to an end as we lay down the weapons of our warfare, weapons that are the ways and means of carnal men.

My friend, Jesus is more than enough. He is the answer to all of your questions, the solution to all of your problems, and The One worth searching for. I pray you stop looking past that truth and find true rest and peace in Him today

I will teach you by the hand of God that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal. Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain? ~Job 27:11-12 KJV •

Tropic Star Holds Fourth Annual Event to Honor Veterans

Submitted by Sandra Stone

Tropic Star RV Resort honored 24 veterans by presenting them with patriotic lap-style quilts Sunday,

March 5. The quilts are designed and constructed by the quilters of Tropic Star. This is the fourth year of the project honoring our veterans. A total of 132 quilts have been presented. The quilt

includes a label that reads, “One Quilt to Warm You, Thousands of Stitches to Thank-you!”

One World War II veteran shared the story that his mother was a “5-

star mother” because she had five sons who served our country. Each veteran has his or her own story of dedication and service. We honor and appreciate their sacrifices. •
