FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND: A self-guided tour of the Magic City

Billings is the comfort zone of the West. In the Yellowstone Valley below, the city bustles with shopping, industry, art galleries, 200 restaurants, Billings Mustangs baseball, first-class live theater and entertainment, 4,000 hotel/motel rooms, horse, car and motorcycle racing, new movie theaters, performing arts theaters, museums and historic attractions. Multitudes of parks and river accesses offer outdoor fun. Geographically, Billings is divided into the West End, Downtown and Historic District, The Heights, Lockwood, and the southside/southwest corridor.

The West End

Access the West End from the Zoo Drive I-90 Exit 443 or the City Center Exit 446. ZooMontana is just off Exit 443. See its acres of habitat filled with exceptional animal species. It opens at 10 a.m. daily. Shiloh Road, which intersects Zoo Drive, will lead you to the major West End arterials of Shiloh Road, King Avenue, Central, Broadwater, Grand, and Rimrock Road. From Shiloh, Rimrock Road leads you to Zimmerman Trail and up to the top of the rimrocks. Turn right (east) on Highway 3 to reach the airport. Exits 443 and 446 lead you to West End hotels, and a wide variety of shopping and dining. Take I-90 Exit 447 to reach the Bureau of Land Management State Office, and the motels and businesses surrounding it. Exit 447 is also the access to Amend Park, Riverfront Park and the Audubon Center on South Billings Boulevard. It offers a small lake with non-motorized boating, picnicking, fishing, equestrian trails (horses not provided) and hiking. The park covers several acres and offers a perfect place to get some exercise. There is plenty of shade. No admission is charged.

Downtown

If you are coming from the west, Downtown is most easily accessed at Exit 450. North 27th Street is the spine of Downtown, leading straight to the airport. First, Third, and Sixth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running west. (First Avenue becomes a two-way at North 18th Street.) Montana Avenue, Second and Fourth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running East. If you are coming from the east, Downtown and the Heights can be accessed from Exit 452. Take First Avenue to go Downtown. The restored train depot on Montana Avenue in the Historic District, where passengers boarded in days gone by, is now a great place to tour and take pictures. It is a neighbor to a great selection of restaurants, shops and art. Billings Historic District buildings and businesses have been renovated and refurbished back to the bustling atmosphere of the days when the Magic City sprang from the fertile banks of the Yellowstone River. Enjoy the modern-day cobblestones, ironwork any blacksmith would be proud of, flowers and trees. The heart of Downtown Billings is at Second Avenue North and Broadway (North 28th Street). Skypoint points to the Big Sky of Montana and offers you shade and shelter. You’ll find helpful maps and merchant lists in kiosks around town.

Billings Heights

If you are coming from the east along I-94, we recommend that you take Exit 23 at Pompeys Pillar (28 miles east of Billings). Visit the National Monument that bears Captain William Clark’s carved signature. Then proceed along Highway 312. Stop in Worden and Huntley to discover unhurried businesses and friendly people. Follow 312 into Billings Heights. The Heights is a geographical benchland that rises above the Yellowstone River Valley. Turn Left onto Pemberton Ln. then a left onto Like Elmo Dr. to check out the wildlife displays at the Fish, Wildlife and Parks center overlooking Lake Elmo. Return to Main Street for a wide variety of food and shopping. Going south on Main Street in the Heights will lead you to MetraPark, the home of MontanaFair, concerts, sports shows, ag shows, trade shows, motorsports and rodeos. Pose for a picture in front of the statue of world famous Saddle Bronc Champion Dan Mortensen. It is right in front of the MetraPark arena.

11:11 Presents Adia Victoria Adia Victoria is establishing a fresh reference point on the musical landscape. From blood-born howls to idiosyncratic phrasing, she is the big red dot saying You Are Here. The Nashville-based artist travels the lands of rock, afro punk, and country, squarely situated in the continent of the Blues. Ask about her artistic goals, and the songwriter/vocalist will say, “I want to shine a light on the unseen, and speak the unspeakable.” Adia Victoria is a truth teller. She admits, “I don’t necessarily paint myself in a flattering light. This isn’t the pop version of pretty or the strategically posed pretty-ugly. Sometimes I’m just ugly. There’s a brat in some of these songs, selfish, nave, vengeful, but there’s also a tender eye that just wants the listener to feel seen and understood.” Rolling Stone Magazine featured Adia Victoria as one of “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” The Village Voice called her an “eerie, intriguing songwriter,” with “bone chilling guitar riffs and lyrics topped with candid scorn. Vogue highlighted the recording artist as one of “5 Beauties Who Answer to Afropunk’s Rebellious Call.” Any forces that tried to tell the former ballet dancer/telemarketer/French major to play small, failed. Growing up in Spartanburg, South Carolina and raised in a strict, Seventh Day Adventist atmosphere, she knows about feeling less than whole. But following her inner voice, and creating a new life for herself in New York, Atlanta, and now Nashville (with stints in Paris and Germany) honed a self-assured voice that resists the outside gaze. She explains, “I wrote this album as a memorial to my 20s. Those are tender years for a lot of women. It hurts. You get busted up in love and life. You make a lot

of mistakes. You meet a lot of people who do you dirty because you don’t understand your value yet.” Adia Victoria spent the last few years writing, recording, touring and performing, while entrenched in the infamous artist R&R world - restaurants and retail work. Day jobs at a laundry list of Nashville “it” and not so “it” spots gave the musician lots of people watching time as well as the mental and emotional space to marinate in her art. Adia blows the social hush-hush lid off the mental and emotional state of a young black woman growing up under the poverty line in the Deep South and all the implications of such. No pretence. No jive. But also, like the writing of Eudora Welty and Tennessee Williams, there is plenty of Southern Gothic styled, marrow deep joy. In a recent feature story, Fader encouraged us to, “Meet Adia Victoria, A Poet Making Country Music a Little Creepier.” She is found in album cuts like Sea of Sand and Stuck in the South, revealing some of her place-based aha moments. In the latter, she notes, “I don’t know nothin’ about Southern belles/ But I can tell you something about Southern hell.” As songs like “Head Rot”, and first single “Dead Eyes” show us, Adia says, “it’s an album of falling in love, dealing with loss, confusion, anger, love, and loving myself.” Produced by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney) and the artist herself, recorded at Nashville, Tennessee’s Haptown Studios, Beyond the Bloodhounds features the indelible lyrics, voice, and guitar solos of Adia Victoria along with a band of talented musicians including Tiffany Minton (Drums), Alex Caress (keys), Mason Hickman (guitar), and Jason Harris (bass). She recalls, “the studio is a Music City treasure. It used to be a car repair shop. You walk in and there are

no windows. It’s dark and moody. It feels like walking into the mind.” The result of a lifetime of introspection and a younger self marked by silent observation, Adia Victoria’s Beyond the Bloodhounds was three active, recording years in the making. The title pays homage to a line in Harriet Jacobs’ Narrative in the Life of a Slave Girl. Ultimately, Victoria’s debut album is more both/and, than either/or. The complexity of her Southern, barrel-aged roots and world traveling, bookworm woman ways will lure you out of the status quo. Publications like American Songwriter, Rookie, and NPR are taking notice. Now on the brink of her 30s, fluent in the language of her own self, Adia Victoria stands poised to take her place in a line of true artists. Her mother warned that she feels too much and would be torn up by the world. Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. The main entrance gate will also be open during these hours of operation. Walk-ins are always welcome every day from dawn to dusk. Daily fees are $7 per vehicle. Interagency passes are honored and can be purchased at the fee station.

In 1806, Captain William Clark camped at the Clarks Fork Ditch Yellowstone mouth of the Clark’s Fork River where it joins the Yel- River S. Park City Rd. lowstone River. This site eventually became known as Reiter Dr. Laurel. Dug-out canoes were made for their trip on the Yellowstone River at a site near Park City ( 7 miles west of Laurel). You can retrace the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition through Montana — the state with more distance than any other state that was traveled through during the expedition. Pompey’s Pillar Rock

From Billings: 30 min. One of America’s most famous sandstone buttes. It bears the only remaining physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, appearing on the trail today as it did 200 years ago. On the face of the 150-foot butte, Captain William Clark carved his name on July 25, 1806, during his return to the United States through the Yellowstone Valley. The Pillar overlooks the Yellowstone River about 25 miles east of Billings, Montana. The area is easily accessible from Interstate 94, using exit 23, or from State Highway 312. The Pillar is a sandstone butte or mesa covering about 2 acres at its base and standing about 150 feet high. Because it is the only sandstone outcrop on the south side of the Yellowstone River for several miles in either direction, it has been a landmark for centuries with spectacular views of the canyon and the Bighorn River below.

Cooney Reservoir

From Billings: 60 min. This reservoir is a popular recreation area serving south-central Montana offering boating, swimming, camping and fishing. Attractions include good walleye and rainbow trout fishing. Boating opportunities are abundant. 72 campsites are available, 11 of which have electrical hookups on this 309 acre site at 4,252 feet in elevation.

Lake Elmo State Park

From Billings: 0 min. This 64-acre reservoir is a popular swimming, nonmotorized boating, and fishing area. The park is 123 acres in size at an elevation of 3,199 feet. The site offers flush and vault toilets, disabled fishing pier, showers, change rooms, picnic tables, trash cans, drinking water and a 1.4 mile hiking/ nature trail.

Tongue River Reservoir

From Billings: 120 min. Tongue River provides a 12-mile long reservoir set in the scenic red shale and juniper canyons and open prairies of southeastern Montana. Boating and other water sports are popular here and the park boasts excellent bass, crappie, walleye and northern pike fishing.

New Exhibition at the Yellowstone Art Museum Opens with Resonant Work by Four Montana Artists

Join area art lovers for the opening reception of a new exhibition 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 14th. The exhibition remains on view through October 2nd. The symbolism and intent of written words has a history as long as human memory. Echo: Unspoken Dialects reveals the intersection between emotion and reason as described by the paths of memory employed by four leading Montana artists who utilize words or language-like forms. Four distinctive voices in the sea of contemporary Montana art practice employ the complexities of written or published language in combination with traditional and non-traditional painterly and sculptural forms. These words and non-words “echo” between the past and present while positively charging viewers’ cognition and interpretive abilities in their journey to discover meaning, joy, and wonder in recent works by Catherine Courtenaye, Bozeman; Kate Hunt, Kalispell; Michael Haykin, Boulder; and Jerry Iverson, Big Timber. beautiful color-field paintings. Her calligraphic characters dance and travel through time and space—often balanced with bird imagery to reinforce the themes of flight in her paintings. Kate Hunt’s sculptures are composed of a multitude of

compressed layers of printed matter that operate as time capsules, relics, and totems from the near and distant past. Michael Haykin’s recent paintings recall the graffiti of childhood: love notes and carved names left on school room desks and obscured messages inscribed on urban walls. Jerry Iverson emulates the conventions of written language while inventing a stark and perhaps unknowable new vocabulary rife with Modernist art references. Seen together, works by these participating artists represent a human desire to record and share experiences in literal, figurative, representational, and conceptual terms. Their collective wisdom and art forms will engage viewers on multiple

levels that range from serving their curiosity to appeasing the need to be surrounded by beauty—ultimately deriving their own meanings from the echo of sincere and intelligent expressions stirred from the depths of creative minds at work and play in the reverberant space of Montana. Echo: Unspoken Dialects is organized by the Yellowstone Art Museum, curated by Senior Curator Bob Durden. The exhibition includes work by artists who are represented in the museum’s Montana Collection. The timing of the exhibition will appeal to area residents and to the many cultural visitors who travel during the summer seeking a taste of the cultural treasures across the nation. The exhibition is appropriate for all ages. Members are admitted free, and the general public can visit for a nominal admission free. The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum DOWNTOWN – The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum, located in Billings on 914 Division St., is a red-stoned mansion built in 1903 by Preston B. Moss, who moved to Billings from Paris, MO. It was inhabited solely by Mr. and Mrs. Moss, their six children, and three servants until 1984. The house was built for a cost of $105,000, when most homes averaged about $3,000. It has 28 rooms, and is 60 feet square. It rises 45 feet above the surround-

ing gardens. The home became an historic house museum shortly after the last family member passed away in 1984. The house was well preserved by the family with very few alterations. For this reason, the home is filled with most of the original contents and design features: interior curtains, wall coverings, furniture, light fixtures, carpets and color. The originality of the artifacts makes the Moss Mansion a unique community treasure. The Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Seasonal exhibits are also featured. The Moss Mansion was designed by the famous New York Architect Henry Hardenbergh, who also designed the original Waldorf-Astoria, Plaza Hotel, The Dakota, Williard Hotel, and Copely Hotel. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday

through Saturday with tours on the hour starting with the first tour at 10 a.m. and the last tour at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the museum is open 1-4 p.m. with tours on the hour starting with the first tour at 1 p.m. and the last tour at 3 p.m. The museum is closed Monday. Admission is adults $10, seniors (age 65+) and military $7, ages 6-17 $6, and children age 5 and younger admitted free. Music Venues: Concerts will take place in the Olivier Barn and the Tiara, with design concept and acoustics developed by Tippet Rise director Alban Bassuet in collaboration with a team of engineers from Arup, and in Domo, designed by Ensamble Studio. Bassuet said, “During my years of working as a venue designer, I have seen a change in sensibility and aspiration in the concert world. Musicians, audiences, architects, and acousticians have all started to look for alternatives to physical configurations and performance formats. At Tippet Rise, we are meeting this desire by offering intimate, multi-sensory, and immersive performances in a range of indoor and outdoor performance venues matched with distinctive performers and spectacular natural settings.” The scale and proportions of the Olivier Barn were inspired by the powerful performance spaces where Haydn and Mozart expected their works would be performed. A contemporary innovation—a high ceiling suspended above the boxlike space—lends an elevated, ethereal character to the deeply resonant acoustics, but is designed to mimic the pitched roof of a traditional wood barn. The rustic modesty of this design helps to establish an informal atmosphere and dissolve the barrier between performers and audience. The 100-seat Tiara serves as a moveable acoustic shell without walls, featuring a partial ceiling whose corners re-direct sound toward the audience, creating vibrant and enveloping acoustics. The design allows for 360° views of the rolling hills, with the Beartooth Mountains in the distance. Local timber craftsmen Gunnstock Timber Frames have served as lead architect for the projects. Domo is one of Ensamble Studio’s raw-surfaced, quasi-architectural gateway structures and shelters for Tippet Rise, which rear up from the earth like primitive markers.

Summer Brings Live Opera Film Screenings to Tippet Rise

Tippet Rise Art Center has added a new cultural element to its lineup of musical offerings this summer. In July and August the center will present Glyndebourne film screenings of acclaimed operas. The screenings will take place in the center’s Olivier Music Barn. They include Gioachino Rossini’s La Cenerentola – 2005, on Sunday, July 3; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro on Sunday, July 10; and Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, on Thursday, August 18. Tickets are $10 for adults and free to children 18 and under. All film screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. Glyndebourne is an opera house in the Sussex countryside. Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay, Glyndebourne is committed to presenting opera of the highest quality, commissioning new work, developing new talent and reaching new audiences. It is home to the annual Glyndebourne Festival, a widely respected education program, and a library of audio-visual recordings of Festival productions. In the world of opera, Glyndebourne is unique and is recognized globally as one of the great opera houses. The July 3 Glyndebourne: La Cenerentola screening is Rossini’s version of Cinderella, with libretto by Jacopo Ferretti. It is an effervescent comedic opera that many consider to have some of the composer’s finest writing for solo voices and ensembles. Glyndebourne: Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) screening on July 10, is a remarkable marriage of Mozart’s music at the height of his genius and one of the best librettos (by Lorenzo Da Ponte), ever set by focusing on the timeless issues embedded in this frothy drawing-room comedy. The Thursday, August 18 film screening is Glyndebourne: Don Pasquale, with music by Gaetano Donizetti and libretto by Giovanni Ruffini. Set in 19th century Rome, this comedy sparkles with a diamond bright wit, while a darker and more complex undertone emerges as the story of deception unfolds. Tickets are $10 per film screening and are free to children 18 and under. Tippet Rise Art Center is a new destination for the arts that celebrates the union of land, art, architecture, and music, bringing concerts by world-renowned musicians and large-scale contemporary sculpture to the hilltops and rolling meadows of Fishtail, Montana. Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness was created from existing National Forest lands in 1978. The wilderness is partly in Gallatin, Custer and Shoshone National Forests and is composed of 944,000 acres (3,820 km2). The wilderness encompasses two distinct mountain ranges, namely the Beartooth and Absaroka ranges. These ranges are completely distinct geologically speaking with the Absarokas composed primarily of volcanic (or extrusive) and metamorphic rock, while the Beartooths are made up almost entirely of granitic rocks.

Legends of the Little Bighorn live in Hardin

Big Horn County, Yellowtail Lake Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. General Custer meets his demise here every year. Civilized fun and comforts include a pioneer museum, an art gallery, trading posts, a variety of interesting shops, a kiddie playground, an indoor swimming pool and exercise rooms, and a golf course. Hardin, a cattle man from Wyoming who leased tracts of land on the Crow Reservation to range his cattle. Local industry now includes farming and ranching, surface coal mining, fishing and recreational opportunities.

You’ll see sugar beets, corn, wheat, and barley in the fields. The raising of beef cattle, sheep, hogs, and quarter horses is part of the livestock economic picture. Just east of Hardin, where the Little Bighorn River joins the Bighorn, is the island site where the Far West sternwheeler boat anchored on June 27, 1876, to evacuate the wounded from the Reno and Benteen battles. It was the Far West that carried survivors with the story of Custer’s defeat to the rest of the world. Museum and Visitor Center Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of

early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment. Historic District Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. tions. As you drive across the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Nations, be aware that each has its own unique regulations and law enforcement agencies. The National Park Service maintains jurisdiction at Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Visitors may want to enjoy fishing the Big Horn, Little Big Horn, and Tongue Rivers which wind through this region. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports including boating, water skiing and more. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, at Pryor, contains much history of the Crow Indians. Among the primary attractions within Big Horn County is the Little Bighorn Battlefield, site of the defeat of Lt. Colonel George Custer and the 7th Calvary by a combined force of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors in 1876. Annual reenactments of the battle occur each June. In August, Crow Agency, capital of the Crow Nation, hosts Crow Fair when the landscape is transformed by the addition of over 1,000 pitched teepees and thousands of people gathering for traditional dances, drumming and other events. Big Horn County is rich in culture and time-honored traditions.

Tongue River in Ashland Busby Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial. Lame Deer Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is

held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv. Ashland Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop. St. Labre Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days. In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Chey-

ennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the

site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides preschool to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eighty-five percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head.

Attractions include The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the well-known Crow Chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Crow Agency becomes the ‘tepee capital of the world’ in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration. Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system,

farming, ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

Custer’s Last Stand and the Little Bighorn Cpt. Fetterman, a Civil War Veteran, stationed at Fort Phil Kearney (18 miles south of present day Sheridan, WY) had said that with 80 men he could ride straight through the heart of Sioux Country. Fetterman lead a relief force of 81 men of the 2nd Cavalry, 18th Infantry, and two civilians. One of the Braves that performed this stunt was a man named Crazy Horse. The government abandoned the forts along the Bozeman trail, and the tribes were free of intrusion of whites for a time.

Calling All Artists It’s time for a new graphic look for Billings Arts Association, now in its 62nd year. We invite all community artists including BAA’s current members to enter a logo design contest that will give us a fresh face as we continue to provide chances to enjoy and appreciate art to artists and art supporters in the region. Who we are influences what we should look like. Billings Arts Association (BAA) welcomes artists in all visual media. We put up shows, have an annual sale, offer workshops, maintain a May to October plein air season for painters, and most importantly, we make cash grants to area art teachers of all student ages for special projects that might not otherwise be possible. We have a web site, a Facebook presence, and anticipate possibly offering logo merchandise to members and friends. We need a logo that represents us in what we do and helps people recognize us.

There is no fee to enter the contest, and there is a prize.

The contest begins June 18, 2016 and ends at 5 PM on August 2, 2016. All entry materials, including flat art and all contact information (please put your name and phone number on the art) must be delivered to Susan Wolfe at McCormick’s Café between 3-5 pm. on August 2, 2016. If this time is not convenient for you, please contact Susan Wolfe at 406-839-1338 to make arrangements to get your entry to us. To be accepted, entries must be submitted as “flat art,” and may be created in any medium(s). Flat art means drawn, painted, or otherwise rendered on a flat piece of paper, board, or other smooth surface. Digitally created designs should be printed out and submitted in hard copy as well as electronically. Logo designs must be easily comprehended at a distance, be recognizable if rendered in black and white only and be easily printed small or large. Logo entries may include black plus up to three colors, either the words Billings Arts Association, or the letters BAA. Each artist may submit up to three separate designs. All entries become the property of Billings Arts Association, which lets us make full and free use of it as we need to do. Artists may, upon submitting a written request, include their winning design in their own portfolio. BAA retains the right to digitize and otherwise alter a successful design, if necessary to adapt it for full use in print, online, and on logo merchandise. The prize for the winning design will be $250 cash. The winning design will be on display at BAA’s Gainan’s Fall Exhibit on September 16-17, 2016, and the winner will be announced and awarded the cash prize at 4 PM on September 17, 2016.

The discovery of gold in the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory changed the course of history for the region. There had been rumors for a time, in 1874 the Government commissioned an expedition into the Black Hills to confirm the stories. It was lead by Bvt. Major General Custer of the 7th Cavalry; he took almost a thousand men on his march through the heart of Sioux Territory. Gold was discovered, and soon the secret was out. The land was owned by the Sioux as per the Laramie Treaty, so the US Government was required to charge the military and mainly the Cavalry with keeping the white man from plundering their sacred Black hills. This proved to be impossible for a small force to secure an area of thousands of square miles. After conflicts arose with the flood of treasure hunters, the civilian population pressured the government to control the threat. Hence, an order from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs went out in December of 1875, that all Indians must return to their reservations by January of 1876 or be deemed hostiles to the US Government. Runners were sent out from the reservations, those that received the message laughed at the craziness of the demand. Even if they wanted to they could never return in the dead of winter. The War Department had planned for a winter campaign, as had been successful in previous conflicts with the Plains tribes. Due to heavy snow fall, Col. Gibbons 2nd Cavalry from Ft Ellis, MT (Bozeman) and Gen. Terry/Bvt. Gen. Custer’s command from Ft. Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory could not take to the field till spring. General Crook’s force did take to the field under Col. J.J. Reynolds and engaged a Cheyenne village in March of 1876. But victory slipped from this commander, and General Crook’s men were forced to return to Fort Fetterman. General Sherman then planned to have a three prong attack on the Sioux. This informed all the nations of the Sioux and their allies that the US Government was serious and the military would going to attack if they found them off the reservation. On June 25, 1876, General Custer and more than 600 of his 7th Cavalry Troopers fought 2-3,000 warriors on the Banks of the Little Bighorn. They had been in the saddle for over 5 weeks since leaving Ft Abraham Lincoln on May 17, 1876. General Custer was called atop the ridge at the Crow’s Nest at mid morning to see what his chief of scouts, Lt. Varnum and his scouts had seen of a sign of a big village that morning. After weeks on the trail with dust and the rising temperature of the day, General Custer could not see of what he had been told of a large village that was nearly 20 miles in the distance. He broke his command into three Battalions. Then he further separated his first two from the third Battalion commanded by Cpt. Benteen, who he sent to the Southwest and clearly away from the Village. Cpt. Benteen and General Custer have been at odds for quite some time. Custer attacks! Reno is at the south end of the village while Custer skirted the cliffs, moving north. His men fight a running battle from the middle of the village at Minniconjou Ford to Last Stand Hill and all are wiped out. Reno, who he promised help, barely escapes with half his men from his attack on the southern end of the village. He is supported and saved by the return of Benteen. The braves are led by warriors of great courage - such as Crazy Horse, Gall, Sitting Bull and others who carried the day. They hold Benteen and Reno for two days while the village inhabitants escaped before Col. Gibbon and Gen. Terry arrive from the north.
