FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND: A self-guided tour of the Magic City

Billings is the comfort zone of the West. In the Yellowstone Valley below, the city bustles with shopping, industry, art galleries, 200 restaurants, Billings Mustangs baseball, first-class live theater and entertainment, 4,000 hotel/motel rooms, horse, car and motorcycle racing, new movie theaters, performing arts theaters, museums and historic attractions. Multitudes of parks and river accesses offer outdoor fun. Geographically, Billings is divided into the West End, Downtown and Historic District, The Heights, Lockwood, and the southside/southwest corridor.

The West End

Access the West End from the Zoo Drive I-90 Exit 443 or the City Center Exit 446. ZooMontana is just off Exit 443. See its acres of habitat filled with exceptional animal species. It opens at 10 a.m. daily. Shiloh Road, which intersects Zoo Drive, will lead you to the major West End arterials of Shiloh Road, King Avenue, Central, Broadwater, Grand, and Rimrock Road. From Shiloh, Rimrock Road leads you to Zimmerman Trail and up to the top of the rimrocks. Turn right (east) on Highway 3 to reach the airport. Exits 443 and 446 lead you to West End hotels, and a wide variety of shopping and dining. Take I-90 Exit 447 to reach the Bureau of Land Management State Office, and the motels and businesses surrounding it. Exit 447 is also the access to Amend Park, Riverfront Park and the Audubon Center on South Billings Boulevard. It offers a small lake with non-motorized boating, picnicking, fishing, equestrian trails (horses not provided) and hiking. The park covers several acres and offers a perfect place to get some exercise. There is plenty of shade. No admission is charged.

Downtown

If you are coming from the west, Downtown is most easily accessed at Exit 450. North 27th Street is the spine of Downtown, leading straight to the airport. First, Third, and Sixth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running west. (First Avenue becomes a two-way at North 18th Street.) Montana Avenue, Second and Fourth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running East. If you are coming from the east, Downtown and the Heights can be accessed from Exit 452. Take First Avenue to go Downtown. The restored train depot on Montana Avenue in the Historic District, where passengers boarded in days gone by, is now a great place to tour and take pictures. It is a neighbor to a great selection of restaurants, shops and art. Billings Historic District buildings and businesses have been renovated and refurbished back to the bustling atmosphere of the days when the Magic City sprang from the fertile banks of the Yellowstone River. Enjoy the modern-day cobblestones, ironwork any blacksmith would be proud of, flowers and trees. The heart of Downtown Billings is at Second Avenue North and Broadway (North 28th Street). Skypoint points to the Big Sky of Montana and offers you shade and shelter. You’ll find helpful maps and merchant lists in kiosks around town.

Billings Heights

If you are coming from the east along I-94, we recommend that you take Exit 23 at Pompeys Pillar (28 miles east of Billings). Visit the National Monument that bears Captain William Clark’s carved signature. Then proceed along Highway 312. Stop in Worden and Huntley to discover unhurried businesses and friendly people. Follow 312 into Billings Heights. The Heights is a geographical benchland that rises above the Yellowstone River Valley. Turn Left onto Pemberton Ln. then a left onto Like Elmo Dr. to check out the wildlife displays at the Fish, Wildlife and Parks center overlooking Lake Elmo. Return to Main Street for a wide variety of food and shopping. Going south on Main Street in the Heights will lead you to MetraPark, the home of MontanaFair, concerts, sports shows, ag shows, trade shows, motorsports and rodeos. Pose for a picture in front of the statue of world famous Saddle Bronc Champion Dan Mortensen. It is right in front of the MetraPark arena.

FRUIT BATS

21+, Fruit Bats started in the mid1990s as the four-track project of Eric D. Johnson. The name “Fruit Bats” was actually one of many cryptic

monikers scrawled on the cassettes. Somehow that one stuck. Some of the other band names included “Holiday Inn,” and “Senseless Tripe.” For a number of years there were many warbling, feedback laden tapes, but no shows and no band. In early 2000, Johnson joined the cast of characters that made up Califone and the whole Perishable Records family. It was this kinship with a bunch of like minded folks that coaxed the Fruit Bats from out of the bedroom and turned the shy lo-fi project into a real band. Fruit Bats would sign with Sub Pop records in 2002 and release 4 successful records with the venerable Seattle imprint. They then toured the world, played on the TV and had a generally great time. Besides the aforementioned “zoology rock,” the two best obscure genres the Fruit Bats have been linked to by the press are “bootgazer,” and “rustic pop.” So there you go. EAGLE MOUNT BILLINGS SLED HOCKEY CLINIC

Sled Hockey is played like traditional hockey on a standard rink. Players sit in specially designed sleds that rest on skate blades. They use two short hockey sticks with blades on one end to control the puck and metal “picks” on the other end to propel themselves across the ice. The game is very similar to traditional hockey with six players on a team, including a goalie. The goals are regulation sized and three fifteen-minute periods are played. Sled hockey is fun, energetic, fast-paced and physical. Clinic is geared for individuals with a physical disability. Able-bodied peers may also register to learn more about the sport. NIGHTTIME HILL CLIMB @ BMC GROUNDS

Every autumn, comes the Nighttime Pro Hill Climb at the BMC. Staged under evening coolness and later the darkness of night, the Pro Nighttime Hill Climb attracts professional athletes from around the region and Canada, not to mention a dedicated crowd of hill climbing fans that come out to watch the motorcycles rip up one of the most challenging hill climb courses on the BMC grounds. Enterprise Earth was formed by Dan Watson (former Infant Annihilator vocalist) and Bj Sampson in the late summer of 2014. Quickly after their inception, the band began

picking up a large internet following. Immediately they released their first single ‘Masquerade of Angels’ which was welcomed with open arms by the death metal community. A few months in to their career, the band released their debut 5-song EP ‘23’. The EP has spread like wild fire on the internet and quickly became very talked about. This is an enjoyable game, and should be treated as such. No one can really determine your place in this world, MCFC will take everything into consideration and do the best we can at the time. We are escaping into fantasy, but not at the expense of safety or hurting others. If it is harassment outside the walls, it is harassment inside as well. Ask ! Communication is key. The security number will be prominently displayed. Every station is maintained or monitored by a Magic City Fantasy Con member or volunteer. If the monitor or volunteer is displaying questionable actions, alert a director. The two (or more) parties will be separated until a determination is made. Everywhere at this convention, you will be within hearing distance if you call for assistance.

They don’t call him lucky Louie because he does well at the roulette table or because he is a savvy business man, although at least one of those is true. His true fortune lies in his family, although in Laurel he is best known as the owner of the city’s oldest drinking establishment, Lucky Louie’s Tavern and Casino, formerly known as the Board of Trade located city center at 117 E. Main St.

Besides talking about his namesake bar, Carranco enjoys visiting about his life, both business and personal. There have been plenty of twists and turns in both.

Although many consider Louie Carranco a Laurel fixture, the born and raised Montanan opened Lucky Louie’s only about seven years ago with his long-time silent partners. One of his former local establishments is still probably better known, both statewide and to truckers everywhere. Shotgun Willies was once one of Yellowstone County’s finest gentleman’s clubs. Sitting next to the former Pelican Plaza Truck Stop, the strip joint was a popular club until about a year ago. The Pelican Plaza was sold and with it went the lease. Unable to find another suitable location, the 81-year-old now focuses most of his time managing the Laurel sports bar and relaxing with his family.

Out with the old, in with the new

Since purchasing Laurel’s favorite watering hole, Carranco has upgraded the joint. “We really cleaned it up in here,” he said, noting the new carpeting, six big TV’s and spiffed-up restrooms. “But, we left the history.” According to saloon lore, long-ago railroaders used silver dollars and left their marks by rubbing the edge of the coins into the wood. The grooves from the 8-bit pieces remain, but the solid wood bar is clean and has a new finish. Despite his relatively recent arrival to the best little burg in the state, Carranco is liked and respected here. In part that’s because wherever he has lived he’s been a one-man economic development boon, having employed many locals. He’s especially proud of his current crew. “Justin, Darcy, Mike and Rachel are four of the best bartenders in the county,” he said naming them in the order of their longevity. “But even they need supervision and that gives me a reason to get up and out everyday.” Carranco noted that customers compliment the service his staff provides everyday and they especially like the newest addition. “The new fry station is a self-contained system,” he said pointing out the appliance behind the bar. “It cooks faster than the older types and the food tastes fresher.” The wide variety of treats go great with a beer and can substitute for dinner when a customer is unable to leave a hot machine in the casino. In addition to pizza, favorites on the menu include the Siracha bites, chunks of solid chicken with a little sizzle; onion rings; breaded mushrooms; fries, tots or chips; chicken gizzards and wings; steak fingers and, of course, chicken strips. All the appetizers are served with a choice of 10 dipping sauces. Prices range from $3 to $11.25 for the combo

In the beginning—Billings

“I was born and raised in Rosebud, Montana, 40,000 years ago,” he joked, although folks much younger admire the octogenarian’s health and humor. “My parents were sugar beet farmers who had immigrated here from Mexico.” Carranco is the second of 10 children born to the large family. He moved to Billings in 1960, where he got his start working for Conoco. After a few years, he purchased the Texaco station that was where the Wells Fargo tower now sits on North 27th St. Later, he opened the Conoco on 17th St. W. and Poly Dr. After selling that station Carranco worked for AMC as a warranty and service rep.

Big business, weddings

“I did that for 3 or 4 years and then in 1973, I went to Casper and opened the first Taco Bell in Wyoming,” he said. That was still early in his career and by then he had married his first wife, Lynn, in Billings and had children Stephanie and Brent. The Carrancos divorced before Louie made the move to Wyoming. He remarried while in Wyoming and he and his second wife adopted Jennifer when she was just 13 days old. Although that marriage didn’t last, his businesses thrived. “A group of us opened Dos Machos in Billings,” he said. “I was a silent partner in that venture, but I went on to open Little Big Man

Pizza in Casper in 1980, and then a second Taco Bell.” While Carrano got his business savvy early on, it took a little longer for his family and love life to come in line.

Home again

“I was in big trouble when I came back to Billings after my second divorce,” he said. “I had sold the Taco Bells and had to sell my partnership in Little Big Man. I lost a lot.” But, he made significant gains in other aspects of his life by returning to his home state. “After being divorced for 34 years, my first wife and I remarried. We’ve been married for 20 years now,” he said with a smile and added with a hearty laugh, “I shot myself in the foot once and came back and did it again.” Despite a recent hip replacement, he looks and feels good and said he is blessed. “I’m home and closer to my family, certainly closer to my kids,” he said. In addition to his wife and children, Carranco has grandkids from all three of his children. “I am a lucky man.” The maturing entrepreneur enjoys visiting about his colorful past and his happy domesticity. He can be found most mornings enjoying a cup of coffee and holding court at Lucky Louie’s. Besides his home in Billings Heights, the man wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. In 1806, Captain William Clark camped at the Clarks Fork Ditch Yellowstone mouth of the Clark’s Fork River where it joins the Yel- River S. Park City Rd. lowstone River. This site eventually became known as Reiter Dr. Laurel. Dug-out canoes were made for their trip on the Yellowstone River at a site near Park City ( 7 miles west of Laurel). You can retrace the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition through Montana — the state with more distance traveled than any other state during the expedition. On their return trip, Lewis and Clark split and took separate routes while in Montana.

Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. The main entrance gate will also be open during these hours of operation. Walk-ins are always welcome every day from dawn to dusk. Daily fees are $7 per vehicle. Interagency passes are honored and can be purchased at the fee station.

New Exhibition at the Yellowstone Art Museum Opens with Resonant Work by Four Montana Artists

The exhibition remains on view through October 2nd. The symbolism and intent of written words has a history as long as human memory. Echo: Unspoken Dialects reveals the intersection between emotion and reason as described by the paths of memory employed by four leading Montana artists who utilize words or language-like forms. Four distinctive voices in the sea of contemporary Montana art practitioners employ the complexities of written or published language in combination with traditional and non-traditional painterly and sculptural forms. These words and non-words “echo” between the past and present while positively charging viewers’ cognition and interpretive abilities in their journey to discover meaning, joy, and wonder in recent works by Catherine Courtenaye, Bozeman; Kate Hunt, Kalispell; Michael Haykin, Boulder; and Jerry Iverson, Big Timber. Catherine Courtenaye uses script (real and invented) to modulate the surface of beautiful color-field paintings. Her calligraphic characters dance and travel

through time and space—often balanced with bird imagery to reinforce the themes of flight in her paintings. Kate Hunt’s sculptures are composed of a multitude of compressed layers of printed matter that operate as time capsules, relics, and

totems from the near and distant past. Michael Haykin’s recent paintings recall the graffiti of childhood: love notes and carved names left on school room desks and obscured messages inscribed on urban walls. Jerry Iverson emulates the conventions of written language while inventing a stark and perhaps unknowable new vocabulary rife with Modernist art references. Seen together, works by these participating artists represent a human desire to record and share experiences in literal, figurative, representational, and conceptual terms. Their collective wisdom and art forms will engage viewers on multiple levels that range from serving their curiosity to appeasing the need to be sur-

rounded by beauty—ultimately deriving their own meanings from the echo of sincere and intelligent expressions stirred from the depths of creative minds at work and play in the reverberant space of Montana. Echo: Unspoken Dialects is organized by the Yellowstone Art Museum, curated by Senior Curator Bob Durden. The exhibition includes work by artists who are represented in the museum’s Montana Collection. The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum DOWNTOWN – The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum, located in Billings on 914 Division St., is a red-stoned mansion built in 1903 by Preston B. Moss, who moved to Billings from Paris, MO. It was inhabited solely by Mr. and Mrs. Moss, their six children, and three servants until 1984. The house was built for a cost of $105,000, when most homes averaged about $3,000. It has 28 rooms, and is 60 feet square. It rises 45 feet above the surround-

ing gardens. The home became an historic house museum shortly after the last family member passed away in 1984. The house was well preserved by the family with very few alterations. For this reason, the home is filled with most of the original contents and design features: interior curtains, wall coverings, furniture, light fixtures, carpets and color. The originality of the artifacts makes the Moss Mansion a unique community treasure. The Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Seasonal exhibits are also featured. The Moss Mansion was designed by the famous New York Architect Henry Hardenbergh, who also designed the original Waldorf-Astoria, Plaza Hotel, The Dakota, Williard Hotel, and Copely Hotel. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday

through Saturday with tours on the hour starting with the first tour at 10 a.m. and the last tour at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the museum is open 1-4 p.m. with tours on the hour starting with the first tour at 1 p.m. and the last tour at 3 p.m. The museum is closed Monday. Beat the Heat and Enjoy a Visual Feast at the Yellowstone Art Museum

Billings Arts Association Exhibit at McCormick Cafe Members of the Billings Arts Association have been invited to exhibit at the McCormick Café on Montana Avenue during August and September. The exhibit will begin August 3 and run through September 28. The artists of the BAA are eager to show their work in this lovely large venue. The McCormick Cafe has always shown an appreciation for the arts in its support of the work of individual artists and for the bi-monthly Art Walks. An added feature of the exhibit is that sales of artwork will generate funding for art education charitable purposes namely the BAA’s Art Education Grant. The BAA Grants fund art education projects in our area so teachers can propose special projects which otherwise might not be affordable. An innovative proposal for art education in any venue or medium will be considered. The dog days of summer are upon us, but the Yellowstone Art Museum is a great destination for beating the heat while enjoying a feast of visual offerings with family members and friends. Just in time for the harvest season, the YAM offers a new exhibition that examines an often misunderstood rural community, which is known by the public primarily through their interactions at local farmers’ markets. Jill Brody: Hidden in Plain Sight reveals everyday moments from life in Liberty County Hutterite communities with her large-scaled, beautifully composed photographs. The exhibition remains on view September 1, 2016 – December 30, 2016 with an opening reception on Thursday, September 1, 2016. The public will have an opportunity to learn more about this exhibition and the artist’s work at Brody’s artist’s talk 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 22nd. Members of the centuries-old Hutterite group live among us, yet separately. We see them, know of their unique colonies, and occasionally do business with them, yet we understand little of their history and the nature of the way of life they follow. Like so many minority groups, the Hutterites have suffered persecution and hostility throughout their history, from their earliest days in the 16th century to the present. Theirs is a group that is both ethnic and religious in its origins, yet their essential human kinship with those of us who live in the contemporary, technology-driven world is not evident to everyone. “People think we are ignorant because we only go to school through eighth grade, and because we don’t go out of the colony very much. But here we learn from the time we are little children to care for each other and live in peace. So why would we go out when we already have what other people want?”—young Hutterite woman If anything is commonly known about Hutterite colonies, it is their reputation for being self-contained and private. So much more is the privilege, then, to be able to view this selection of photographs by Jill Brody, a photographer who earned the trust and support of the Hutterite colonies in Liberty County, Montana, to the degree that they allowed her to document their daily lives and share her masterful photographs with audiences who wish to build their understanding of the broad diversity of ways of life among people. Jill Brody has a long history of aesthetically impactful photodocumentary work in Montana. She is a consummate professional whose attention to detail and thoughtful composition have garnered much praise. Brody approached her work with the Hutterites as she had her previous projects: with careful observation, patience, and empathy. As former senior curator at the Missoula Art Museum, Stephen Glueckert, has stated, “Brody is a genuine artist, true Jill Brody, Onion House Tableau, to herself and to her audience. 2012, photograph Her work helps clarify ideas, concepts, and imagery that have emerged from the isolation of the West.” Hidden in Plain Sight was originally organized by the Missoula Art Museum and traveled the state under the auspices of the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association. The presentation at the YAM is under special arrangement with the artist and is sponsored by an anonymous donor, Dr. Stephen and Marilyn Kramer, Dave and Cynthia Hummel, and the Stapleton Gallery. Other offerings abound at the YAM and the public is invited to learn more about the works included in its current exhibition Echo: Unspoken Dialects. Join other area art patrons at Deep Echo: A Conversation with Kate Hunt, Jerry Iverson, and Michael Haykin, three of the four exhibiting artists. The conversation will be moderated by the museum’s senior curator, and takes place 6:30–7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 18th. An additional conversation with exhibiting artist Catherine Courtenaye will take place 6:30–7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 8th. Legends of the Little Bighorn live in Hardin

Big Horn County, Yellowtail Lake Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. General Custer meets his demise here every year. Civilized fun and comforts include a pioneer museum, an art gallery, trading posts, a variety of interesting shops, a kiddie playground, an indoor swimming pool and exercise rooms, and a golf course. All the Comforts Accommodations: Motels, campgrounds, and restaurants will keep you comfortable while you explore the Little Bighorn Battlefield and Custer National Cemetery, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Yellowtail Dam, and the Bighorn River. Chamber of Commerce Hospitality: Besides being the home of Little Big Horn Days, Hardin has other events from rodeos and parades to street dances, art and craft shows, to quilt shows. Hardin, a cattle man from Wyoming who leased tracts of land on the Crow Reservation to range his cattle. Local industry now includes farming and ranching, surface coal mining, fishing and recreational opportunities.

You’ll see sugar beets, corn, wheat, and barley in the fields. The raising of beef cattle, sheep, hogs, and quarter horses is part of the livestock economic picture. Just east of Hardin, where the Little Bighorn River joins the Bighorn, is the island site where the Far West sternwheeler boat anchored on June 27, 1876, to evacuate the wounded from the Reno and Benteen battles. It was the Far West that carried survivors with the story of Custer’s defeat to the rest of the world. Museum and Visitor Center Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of

early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment. Historic District Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984. Call 406-629-0134 to schedule a walking tour. The Historic Preservation Office is in the depot. Big Horn County and Hardin information are also on the National Register database. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument I-90 Exit 510, 406-638-2621. Open year round. Located near Crow Agency, on Highway 212 (I-90 Exit 510), Little Bighorn Battlefield is just 15 miles east of Hardin. Crow Agency Apsaalooke The Crow Reservation is where culture and tradition are a way of life, perpetuated from generation to generation. Experience the culture of the Apsaalooke, “Children of the LargeBeaked Bird,” the Crow People. Big Horn County Big Horn County is a land made up of varying jurisdic-

tions. As you drive across the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Nations, be aware that each has its own unique regulations and law enforcement agencies. The National Park Service maintains jurisdiction at Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Visitors may want to enjoy fishing the Big Horn, Little Big Horn, and Tongue Rivers which wind through this region. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports including boating, water skiing and more. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, at Pryor, contains much history of the Crow Indians. Among the primary attractions within Big Horn County is the Little Bighorn Battlefield, site of the defeat of Lt. Colonel George Custer and the 7th Calvary by a combined force of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors in 1876. Annual reenactments of the battle occur each June. In August, Crow Agency, capital of the Crow Nation, hosts Crow Fair when the landscape is transformed by the addition of over 1,000 pitched teepees and thousands of people gathering for traditional dances, drumming and other events. Big Horn County is rich in culture and time-honored traditions.

N. Cheyenne, Busby, Lame Deer and Ashland Loop

Tongue River in Ashland Busby Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial. Lame Deer Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is

held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv. Ashland Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop. St. Labre Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days. In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Chey-

ennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the

site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides preschool to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness was created from existing National Forest lands in 1978. The wilderness is partly in Gallatin, Custer and Shoshone National Forests and is composed of 944,000 acres (3,820 km2). The wilderness encompasses two distinct mountain ranges, namely the Beartooth and Absaroka ranges. These ranges are completely distinct geologically speaking with the Absarokas composed primarily of volcanic (or extrusive) and metamorphic rock, while the Beartooths are made up almost entirely of granitic rocks.

THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eighty-five percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head.

Attractions include The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the well-known Crow Chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Crow Agency becomes the ‘teepee capital of the world’ in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration. Cultural tours offered through Little Bighorn College, which can be reached at 406-638-3104. Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system,

farming, ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

KANSAS has spent more than four decades as a part of the soundtrack of the lives of multiple generations of music lovers. The band’s first public statement appeared on their self-titled album in 1974. “From the beginning, we considered ourselves and our music different and we hope we will always remain so.” Little did this legendary rock group realize that back in the early 70s, what seemed to be “different,” was actually ahead of its time. This “garage band” from Topeka released their debut album in 1974 after being discovered by Wally Gold, who worked for Don Kirshner. The band has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Best of KANSAS), one platinum live album (Two for the Show), and a million-selling gold single, ‘Dust in the Wind.’ KANSAS appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the 70s and 80s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ was the #2 most played track on classic rock radio in 1995 and went to #1 in 1997. Coinciding with the celebration of their 40th anniversary, the band KANSAS, was inducted into both the Kansas Hall of Fame and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame as recognition for their achievements from both their native state and adopted home state. The band, which is currently comprised of original drummer Phil Ehart, bassist/vocalist Billy Greer, keyboardist David Manion, vocalist/ keyboardist Ronnie Platt, violinist/ guitarist David Ragsdale, and original guitarist Richard Williams, continues to perform in front of large and enthusiastic audiences around the world. 2016 Season is in Full Swing at Pompeys Pillar We are coming up on the end of the first month of the 2016 season. Children are everywhere, thanks to the success of the Teacher Tote Program and the Every Kid in a Park program, many students have visited the Pillar this month. Thanks to the Rangers and Volunteers who have helped educate young minds about the rich history involving Pompeys Pillar and the surrounding area. The beginning of the season always gives a chance to welcome our new volunteers and express our gratitude to the returning volunteers. We welcome and thank Bobby and Mary Denton from Georgia. They will be with us for a few months this summer. We also welcome new volunteers, Molly Dennis, Dennis Patton, Brenda Eichele, Eileen Jensen, Kalman Tinka and Colleen Cooke, our newest volunteer. Thanks to all of you for agreeing to spend some of your time serving at Pompeys Pillar. Now that the monument season is in full swing, we encourage all of you to visit Pompeys Pillar this year. Tell your neighbors and invite your outof-town visitors to accompany you on a visit to the monument. There are a number of exciting new things happening this season at Pompeys Pillar. New River Walk signs with additional signs. Construction of two new replica canoes. Canoe Camp discovery exhibit. Replacement of all the boards on the board walk and as always, mark your calendars for Clark Days. Free camping on the 29th and 30th of July with a full day of activities, reenactments, music and Native American dancers.

BURN THE POINT CLASSIC CAR PARADE

Always Friday night, on Labor Day weekend, the parade brings the streets to life at 6:30 when the first of over 500 cars cross N 27th St. to rumble down 3rd Ave., N. to the delight of as many as 12,000 spectators. We don’t know how to count them, but that was the estimate of last year’s crowd. They fill the streets, parking lots, parking garages and sidewalks. Kurt Anthony and Major Dan Miller from MOJO 92.5 FM announce the cars from the front of St. Francis Upper School and the Babcock Theater,

respectively. As they rumble back across N 27th St. Bucky Beaver and the Groundgrippers fire up on Broadway and there is dancing in the streets. Memory and Identity: Apsáalooke and Hidatsa ledger art at Bair Museum This summer, the Bair Museum hosts the second exhibition and a different selection of ledger drawings from the Barstow Collection at the Montana State University Billings Library. The entire collection consists of 66 drawings by members of the Crow (Apsáalooke) and Hidatsa (Gros Ventre of the River) who were together on the Crow Agency Reservation in the 1880s and 1890s. Elizabeth Guheen, Director and Chief Curator of the Charles M. Bair Family Museum, said the ledger drawings in this summer’s exhibition speak to a specific time in the life of Native peoples in Montana and in the United States and contain many different messages because they are communicating across time and history and through many generations. “The Indian schools on the reservations focused on the government’s goal of “Americanizing” the Indian population on the youngest members of the tribes. Students were required to cut their hair, speak

only English, and wear American clothing. Many schools required that the children change their names to more American ones. A few of the drawings appear to be signed by the artist because they had been sent to school. In answer to the implied question, “Who are you?” the scrawled signature written in pencil “I am the Indian Boy” stands as the defining metaphor for children taken from their parents and their way of life and given a new, generic identity untethered to any memories or culture.” Major Charles Barstow was chief clerk for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Crow Agency from 1879 to 1897. He provided Indian warriors materials and encouraged them paint and draw. The ledger drawings mimic the function of traditional buffalo hide painting – narrative of social status, youthful adventure from capturing horses and “counting coups” to dancing and courtship. Barstow’s collection of 66 drawings was rediscovered in 1930 in Roundup and came to MSU-Billings through the

efforts of Ruthann Wilbur Hines. The Bair Museum, located in Martinsdale, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were

trailed into the Yellowstone River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular

view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is now open

Little Bighorn Battlefield is 15 miles east of Hardin. Picture, if you can, June 25, 1876, the day when over 210 troopers of the 7th Cavalry fell in battle. The thunder of hooves, war cries of the Teton Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians, rifle fire and death chants softly echo across the plain. This was...Custer’s Last Stand. June 25, 2016 marked the 140th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Visitor Center displays exhibits on the battle, Indian culture, and frontier soldiers. New interpretive exhibits include “People of the Plains,” a story of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people at the time of the battle in 1876. Full-size photographic cut-outs and artifacts from the battlefield collection interpret the many roles that tribal members played, including the warrior’s dual role as hunter and warrior. “Tools of the Battle” describes the vast assortment of weapons used in the battle by the 7th Cavalry and the Native American warriors. “Unraveling the Mystery” is an exhibit of the important archaeological surveys conducted on the battlefield and how the recovered artifacts provide an understanding of what may have happened during the battle. Firearms analysis and forensic pathology have revealed not only individual weapon types and details of movements during the battle, but also important clues about the various equipment used by both sides. The Memorial is open Memorial Day through Labor Day 8 a.m.-8 p.m., after Labor Day through September 8 a.m.-6 p.m., OctoberMarch 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and April through Memorial Day 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Daily ranger talks and movies are provided. Hiking is permitted on a 3/4 mile interpretation trail, selfguided with brochures. There is also a self-guiding booklet for the cemetery. The battlefield is located 61 miles south of Billings, Montana, and 65 miles north of Sheridan, Wyoming, at the junction of Interstate 90, and Montana Highway 212, I-90 Exit 510. Little Bighorn offers a wide range of interpretive opportunities. Self-guided walking tours are available for the battle-related sites and the national cemetery.

A self-guiding, 5-mile tour road enables visitors to follow and observe the sites related to the battle. Three walking trails have been established: Reno-Benteen Defense site, 5 miles south of the Custer field; Keogh/Crazy Horse position on battle ridge; and along Deep Ravine, west of battle ridge. Custer National Cemetery contains burials that are historic to northern plains events as well as burial of veterans and dependents from 1879-present. White Swan Memorial Library contains the finest collection of research materials available on the battle of the Little Bighorn, as well as other related historical events. A Powwow is held in conjunction with the fair and rodeo. The authentic Indian event features colorful costumes made with feathers, rawhide, and millions of beads. Parades, dancing contests, racing events and pari-mutuel betting are featured daily. Visitors are always welcome.

Crow Agency has a hospital designed with unique Indian architecture. The Crow tribe has its own government. The Crow Reservation, covering about 2,500,000 acres in Big Horn County, encompasses Lodge Grass, St. Xavier, Crow Agency, Pryor and Fort Smith. Rosebud Battle was a foreshadowing to the Battle of the Little Bighorn Rosebud Battle The Battle of the Rosebud symbolizes the Indians’ first stiff resistance in the Sioux War of 1876. Its outcome had an impact on Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s devastating defeat on the Little Bighorn only a week later. The June 17, 1876, battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and General George Crook’s cavalry and infantry was

one of the largest Indian battles ever waged in the United States. It set the stage for the Indian victory eight days later when Lt. Col. George A. Custer and his immediate command were wiped out on the Little Bighorn. A selfguided tour with interpretive signs is managed by Montana State Parks. (25 miles east of Crow Agency on U.S. 212, then 20 miles south on Secondary 314, then 1.5 miles west on county road; 3,052 acres; 4,300’ el. 406-232-0900.) In June 2010, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. There is no charge for entrance. Camping is not allowed.
