2 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND: A self-guided tour of the Magic City

Billings is the comfort zone of the West. In the Yellowstone Valley below, the city bustles with shopping, industry, art galleries, 200 restaurants, Billings Mustangs baseball, first-class live theater and entertainment, 4,000 hotel/motel rooms, horse, car and motorcycle racing, new movie theaters, performing arts theaters, museums and historic attractions. Multitudes of parks and river accesses offer outdoor fun. Geographically, Billings is divided into the West End, Downtown and Historic District, The Heights, Lockwood, and the southside/southwest corridor.

The West End

Access the West End from the Zoo Drive I-90 Exit 443 or the City Center Exit 446. ZooMontana is just off Exit 443. See its acres of habitat filled with exceptional animal species. It opens at 10 a.m. daily. Shiloh Road, which intersects Zoo Drive, will lead you to the major West End arterials of Shiloh Road, King Avenue, Central, Broadwater, Grand, and Rimrock Road. From Shiloh, Rimrock Road leads you to Zimmerman Trail and up to the top of the rimrocks. Turn right (east) on Highway 3 to reach the airport. Exits 443 and 446 lead you to West End hotels, and a wide variety of shopping and dining. Take I-90 Exit 447 to reach the Bureau of Land Management State Office, and the motels and businesses surrounding it. Exit 447 is also the access to Amend Park, Riverfront Park and the Audubon Center on South Billings Boulevard. It offers a small lake with non-motorized boating, picnicking, fishing, equestrian trails (horses not provided) and hiking. The park covers several acres and offers a perfect place to get some exercise. There is plenty of shade. No admission is charged.

Downtown

If you are coming from the west, Downtown is most easily accessed at Exit 450. North 27th Street is the spine of Downtown, leading straight to the airport. First, Third, and Sixth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running west. (First Avenue becomes a two-way at North 18th Street.) Montana Avenue, Second and Fourth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running East. If you are coming from the east, Downtown and the Heights can be accessed from Exit 452. Take First Avenue to go Downtown. The restored train depot on Montana Avenue in the Historic District, where passengers boarded in days gone by, is now a great place to tour and take pictures. It is a neighbor to a great selection of restaurants, shops and art. Billings Historic District buildings and businesses have been renovated and refurbished back to the bustling atmosphere of the days when the Magic City sprang from the fertile banks of the Yellowstone River. Enjoy the modern-day cobblestones, ironwork any blacksmith would be proud of, flowers and trees. The heart of Downtown Billings is at Second Avenue North and Broadway (North 28th Street). Skypoint points to the Big Sky of Montana and offers you shade and shelter. You’ll find helpful maps and merchant lists in kiosks around town.

Billings Heights

If you are coming from the east along I-94, we recommend that you take Exit 23 at Pompeys Pillar (28 miles east of Billings). Visit the National Monument that bears Captain William Clark’s carved signature. Then proceed along Highway 312. Stop in Worden and Huntley to discover unhurried businesses and friendly people. Follow 312 into Billings Heights. The Heights is a geographical benchland that rises above the Yellowstone River Valley. Turn Left onto Pemberton Ln. then a left onto Like Elmo Dr. to check out the wildlife displays at the Fish, Wildlife and Parks center overlooking Lake Elmo. Return to Main Street for a wide variety of food and shopping. Going south on Main Street in the Heights will lead you to MetraPark, the home of MontanaFair, concerts, sports shows, ag shows, trade shows, motorsports and rodeos. Pose for a picture in front of the statue of world famous Saddle Bronc Champion Dan Mortensen. It is right in front of the MetraPark arena.

Fall Home Improvement Show The 23rd annual Fall Home Improvement Show will take place Sept. 9th, 10th and 11th at the Expo Center at Metra Park. The show has grown to over 400 exhibits utilizing the entire Expo Center encompassing over 100,000 square feet of exhibit room inside and outside the facility. The exhibits come from across the United States and Canada. Admission and parking are free. Show hours: Friday: noon - 8 p.m., Saturday & Sunday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The show always takes place the first weekend after Labor Day because summer is coming to an end, kids are back in school, families are back to their normal routines, and it’s time to get those projects done before the upcoming holidays. This is Billings’ only Fall show and continues to grow and gain in popularity every year because of the quality of exhibits and the ability to see the “latest and greatest” in home improvement trends and innovations. There is an overall movement in the United States called nesting. This is where homeowners turn their homes into a more enjoyable living environment. Thus you see people adding home theaters, hobby rooms, exercise rooms, outdoor kitchens, ponds, swimming pools and spas, to make their home into a private paradise. The majority of the businesses exhibiting at the show are from Billings, thus all business transactions and the revenue derived from these transactions remains in our community. We are proud to showcase local business providing cutting edge products/services/technology. Many businesses use the show to introduce and test the waters with new products and services. Demonstrations, such as cooking shows, are always a big hit at the show. Specialty foods & drinks will be located throughout the show for weary show goers. The Kid’s Workshop sponsored by Lowes is always a big hit for the Kids. This is located in the rear of the Expo Center and gives kids a chance to hone their building skills by assembling various projects. This will take place at various times throughout the weekend. Another fun kid friendly event is the Zee Creative Scavenger Hunt. Find the Zee logo at participating booths and you could win an I-Pod. New for kids, or the young at heart, will be the “puck shoot” by

Centennial Ice Arena. A complete listing of exhibitors and further show information can be found in this Home Improvement Show guide or log on to: www.billingshomeimprovementshow.com.

Win Prizes

Home Improvement Show attendees are eligible for many exhibitor prizes and the show’s grand prize package. The grand prize package is the largest in the show’s history and consists of an all-time high twelve prizes worth over $25,000.00 including: a 95% high efficient gas furnace which is provided by White Heating & Air Conditioning, up to $1,000.00 worth of house cleaning services including carpet cleaning, water damage restoration, upholstery cleaning and tile and grout cleaning from Brices MasterClean, a 58 inch wall mounted electric fireplace from the Fireplace Center, custom professionally designed home security system from Kenco Security & Technology including one year monitoring, a $1500.00 Home Insulation Package including installation courtesy of Billings Insulation, a six foot custom patio door from Lynnrich, a double garage door from Connor Doors, a 2000 Watt Honda Generator courtesy of King’s ACE, a $5,000.00 roofing package including material and labor from Moonlight Construction, $1500 towards a custom Epoxy/Aggregate Floor from Rocky Mountain Hardrock Flooring, a $1500 home gutter package from Allstar Custom Raingutters, or a $2000 Body Solid Elliptical with deliver and set up. WOMEN STEPPING FORWARD FOR AGRICULTURE ANNUAL CONFERENCE

It’s time to “Grow More!” and join us at the 2016 Women Stepping Forward for Agriculture Conference! WSFA will be held September 7-9, 2016 at the Big Horn Resort in Billings, Montana! The annual Women Stepping Forward for Agriculture (WSFA) conference has a long history in Montana. The first conference was held in 2001 in Great Falls and the event has been held annually across the state for the past 13 years. Every year, a group of about 10 different women from across Montana volunteer for the Women Stepping Forward for Agriculture steering committee that organizes and hosts the annual conference. In past years the USDA has taken the lead in organizing the conference, however in 2015 a group of women agricultural leaders have stepped up to take over the Women Stepping Forward for Agriculture conference. WILL HOGE HAS BEEN THROUGH THE WRINGER. “Took a whole lot of miles to know what I know now,” sings Will Hoge on “Growing Up Around Here,” the opening track off of his tenth studio album, Small Town Dreams. “I’m kinda proud of growing up around here.” It’s been a whole lot of miles, indeed: miles on the road, driving the bus himself from venue to venue since the nineties; miles to and from Nashville writing rooms, where he’s spent countless hours penning songs – some for him, some for others; miles exploring lands outside of his native Franklin, Tennessee, chasing the spirits of his musical heroes. Roads meet, roads split, roads led to home. This is the album that follows them all, every twist and turn in Hoge’s American journey – a journey that’s positioned him as one of our keenest, most honest modern storytellers, telling both his tale and ours. Northcutt Steele Gallery presents Nishiki Sugawara-Beda,

Word Terminal Nishiki Sugawara-Beda’s exhibition Word Terminal opens at MSUB’s Northcutt Steele Gallery on September 7. An artist reception and gallery talk will be held on the evening of September 29. Word Terminal includes a series of sensitivelylayered mixed-media paintings and delicatelyarranged paper sculptural installations. Collectively, these works explore the intimate, complex relationships between written language and visual image. Informed by personal experiences with the traditional materials and forms of Japanese calligraphy, Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting), and printed seals, Sugawara-Beda’s exhibition offers a cross-cultural invitation to explore the intellectual and embodied dimensions of reading text and image. According to the artist, her experiences learning calligraphy at school and practicing Sumi-e are activities that immediately connect her to her foundation as an artist and as an individual. Nishiki Sugawara-Beda immigrated from Japan to the US as a young adult and has exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally. She received a BA from Portland State University and MFA in Painting

JEFF ANGELL’S STATICLAND

With an unexpected, indefinite hole in their schedule, Angell, along with key collaborator Benjamin Anderson, were offered the opportunity by UDR to expand on the sound they had defined in their previous bands. They recruited Post Stardom Depression drummer Joshua Fant, entered a rehearsal room in Seattle and started, as Angell calls it, “putting in the time.” The songs came together quickly, and before they knew it, they had conceived a thrilling batch of new material that succeed in capturing the spontaneity and excitement of people who are passionate about making music and that have the experience to do it well. The songs swing and shuffle savagely. They are dynamic and diverse, and while each stands as an achievement on its own. It is smokey, versatile and articulate but most importantly, believable. With it he tells the stories of colorful characters, contemplates relationships, and shares dreamy imagery, all the while spurring the listener to expand on the limits we allow ourselves to go. “If there is one consistent theme I kept coming across, it was, let’s leave the past where it belongs.” Angell says. “Band names are a lot like cops: There’s never one around when you need one,” Angell jokes. “We had a great album and we were in need of a name. We wanted something that sounded like a place, a novel or a television series. We started throwing things together that fit that criteria, and we arrived at STATICLAND. Maybe it’s a place where things don’t change and these songs are our plan of escape. I like to think of this record as

Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. The main entrance gate will also be open during these hours of operation. Walk-ins are always welcome every day from dawn to dusk. Daily fees are $7 per vehicle. Trails lead visitors past a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes and to a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts “Clark Days” on a weekend near the date each year to commemorate Captain William Clark’s visit to the site. “The monument will be hosting a lot of exciting events this season and we really want folks from across the region to come celebrate the history and heritage of the West with us,” said Pompeys Pillar Monument Manager Dave Lefevre. “We especially want folks to put

THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eightyfive percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head. Attractions include The Big-

horn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the wellknown Crow Chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Crow Agency becomes the ‘teepee capital of the world’ in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration. Cultural tours offered through Little Bighorn College, which can be reached at 406-638-3104. You may also contact the Tourism Office and Visitor Center for more information about the Crow Indian Reservation by calling 406-638-7272.

Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system, farming,

ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were

trailed into the Yellowstone River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular

view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at

1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at yellowstonecountymuseum.org or call 406-856-6811. Free admission.
