CELTIC GUITARIST JERRY BARLOW RETURNS TO BILLINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY The Billings Public Library is pleased to once again welcome acclaimed Celtic fingerstyle guitarist Jerry Barlow for a special Concert. The event will be held on Thursday, September 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Library, 510 North Broadway in Billings. The program is free to the community. Barlow is a warm, accessible performer and storyteller. His unique and skillfully delivered repertoire incorporates favorite traditional pieces as well as his own Celtic-inspired compositions. His expressive arrangements of lively jigs, spirited reels, and haunting airs is described as music to soothe the soul, warm the heart and lift the spirit. “In concert, Jerry brings traditional Celtic tunes alive by sharing the history, humor, and legends behind the music. “Jerry Barlow … a performer who is skilled, funny and riveting. Out of the many musicians performing today, the vast majority are skilled in either performing on their instrument or in entertaining an audience. It’s very rare and extremely enjoyable to see a musician at the very top of his craft in both areas,” says Scott Beach, Director of Colorado Celtic Entertainment.
Barlow’s latest CD, ‘TWAS THE NIGHT, Songs of Christmas, was released in early December of 2013 to excellent reviews. His 2011 recording, FIELDS AND FENCES, was one of five nominees for Instrumental Album of the Year by the Independent Music Association. .The Indie Acoustic Project, an international award that celebrates the best independent acoustic music, selected the title song from Jerry’s CD, BRING DOWN THE STORM, as “one of the best songs of 2006.” Music from all of Barlow’s recordings can be heard regularly on National Public Radio stations. He has been featured in Fingerstyle Guitar magazine, and was profiled in the February, 2011, issue of Celtic Connection. He has performed in the Gates Auditorium for the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and is a favorite of High plains Public Radio’s Living Room Concert Series in Amarillo, TX. For more information, contact the Library at 406-657-8258, www.jerrybarlow.com or Beverly Stephens at beverly@jerrybarlow.com.
Northcutt Steele Gallery presents Nishiki Sugawara-Beda,
Word Terminal Nishiki Sugawara-Beda’s exhibition Word Terminal opens at MSUB’s Northcutt Steele Gallery on September 7. An artist reception and gallery talk will be held on the evening of September 29. Word Terminal includes a series of sensitivelylayered mixed-media paintings and delicatelyarranged paper sculptural installations. Collectively, these works explore the intimate, complex relationships between written language and visual image. Informed by personal experiences with the traditional materials and forms of Japanese calligraphy, Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting), and printed seals, Sugawara-Beda’s exhibition offers a cross-cultural invitation to explore the intellectual and embodied dimensions of reading text and image. According to the artist, her experiences learning calligraphy at school and practicing Sumi-e are activities that immediately connect her to her foundation as an artist and as an individual. Nishiki Sugawara-Beda immigrated from Japan to the US as a young adult and has exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally. She received a BA from Portland State University and MFA in Painting

ALL ABOUT THAT RAD Color Me Rad: Sept. 17 at the Metrapark WE ARE YOUR EXCUSE TO LET LOOSE
Color Me Rad is loosely based on the Hindu Festival of Colors, otherwise known as Holi. The festive colors used are a sign of winter’s end and spring’s new beginnings. Or in the case of RAD; the color represents the end of lame runs and the beginning of fun runs.
IT GETS THE PEOPLE GOING
Start out as clean as a newborn babe, and throughout the run, our volunteers will coat you with liquids, powders, and gels of blue, green, pink, purple, and yellow until your face, shirt, and body come out silkscreened like a tiedyed hippie on the other side. Each section of the run adds a new explosion of color to your clean, painter’s palate until you cross the finish
Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 9
line into a final blitzkrieg of color.
THE FINISH LINE
This is the royal rumble of color. Every 15 – 20 minutes, participants grab their color powder and create a revival of the RAD sorts. There will be music, food, and more RAD runners than the 80s. Hugs are free and just like any good AA meeting, spectators are welcome.
Frequently Asked Questions What is Color Me Rad?
Color Me Rad is the most fun you’ll ever experience in a 5K! At the starting line you’re clean as a newborn baby, and some 3 miles later, you’ll be so coated with a rainbow of color that your own mother may not recognize you. At each color station (of which we boast eight!), a new dimension of powder or gel will paint your masterpiece. You’ll cross the finish line and into a final blitzkrieg of color.
certified non-toxic and is corn starch-based with food-grade dyes. As with any substance, you won’t want it in your eyes! All Color Me Rad volunteers receive strict instructions to throw color below the head, but as an extra precaution, many runners opt to wear sunglasses or goggles, and sometimes a bandana over the mouth and nose while passing through color stations.
Can I participate if I have medical issues or am pregnant?
Our color is non-toxic and corn starchbased. We want everyone to be as safe as possible, so if you are allergic to corn or food dye, participation in Color Me Rad is strictly off limits. If you are pregnant or have other health concerns, consult with your doctor.
Is there an age limit?
Would you put an age limit on radness? We welcome all ages, even those still in the cooker. Kids aged eight and older must register as adults (see Registration FAQ for more info), and all minor participants must have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
Do I have to be a runner?
You’re not Usain Bolt? Not even sure what a 5K means? No problem. There are thousands of competitive runs out there, but our main goal is washing you in color- the upward FitBit count is just an added bonus. Get through our fun run by sprinting, walking, skipping, or hitching a piggy back ride. We won’t judge.
Do you have a charity?
Color Me Rad is a for-profit business that believes in giving back to the community, so we donate a portion of our proceeds to our many charity partners. This events helps fund the Special Olympics Montana
Is Color Me Rad safe?
The safety of our runners and employees has always been our top priority. Our color is
This is my first 5K, what do I need to know?
Don’t be nervous! Your 5K isn’t timed, and there are no judgments for how long it takes you to finish the course. We’re a fun run, so if you can walk 3.1 miles, you are certified #rad
material. Our recommendations: arrive 30- 45 mins early, lace up some comfortable shoes, and most importantly, wear whatever you’d like to see splashed in color! (White looks bestjust keep in mind that whatever you’re wearing will likely remain dyed even after a wash!)
What’s included in my registration?
You’ll receive a 2016 Color Me Rad tour t-shirt, Phone case (whatever we end up calling it), a racing bib, a color bomb, and a RAD tattoo. And should you be so inclined, additional gear will be available for purchase at packet pick up and on race day to further enrobe yourself in radness.

Rock Of Ages
It’s the tail end of the big bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary venues, a place where Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing ( and longs for small-town girls Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas). But the rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when developers sweet into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save The Strip before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer. THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW
About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eightyfive percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head. Attractions include The Big-
horn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the wellknown Crow Chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Crow Agency becomes the ‘teepee capital of the world’ in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration. Cultural tours offered through Little Bighorn College, which can be reached at 406-638-3104. You may also contact the Tourism Office and Visitor Center for more information about the Crow Indian Reservation by calling 406-638-7272.

Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system, farming,
ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

July 30 on their calendars as this will be the date of the Monument’s Annual Clark Days Celebration.” Riverwalk The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretative center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path quote from Clark’s journals and tell of the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on Aug. 3.
Communities along the Yellowstone River welcome expedition travelers to tread where Captain Clark’s party trod on the return journey in July-August 1806.
The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve and protect Pompeys Pillar National Monument through education, interpretation and special projects and assists the Bureau of Land Management with its management of the site. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar also manage the gift store at the Monument. For more information about volunteering, contact the Friends of Pompeys Pillar office at 406-969-5380. More information on the national monument can be found at www.pompeyspillar.org.

The Great Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-90. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something as tasty For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleryies Yellowstone Art Gallery. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen,
of the regiments 650 men, were killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from

Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a 17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center.
Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at yellowstonecountymuseum.org or call 406-856-6811. Free admission.
