Cinderella Auditions at the NOVA Center NOVA Center for the Performing Arts will be holding auditions for their youth opera Cinderella on September 26 & 27 at 6:00 P.M. Composed by Peter Maxwell Davies and directed by Janie Sutton, Cinderella is a new take on the old fairy tale. In this version, a young Cinderella travels from home to become the au pair for three young women who dream of nothing but marrying rich. This retelling includes a trusty fairy “cat” mother, a chorus of kittens, and-of course-a midnight striking clock. Cinderella auditions are open for grades 2-12. Children interested in a solo part need to prepare 16 measures from a song of their choice. Children interested in an ensemble part do not need to prepare anything.

Cinderella will perform November 11, 12, 13* and 18, 19 & 20*. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 P.M. Sunday matinee performances are at 2:00* P.M. Ticket prices are $16 for adults, $11 for seniors/military, and $10 for students. Tickets are available for purchase on line at NOVAbillings.org, over the phone at 406.591.9535, or at our location at 2317 Montana Ave, Billings, MT 59103. NOVA Center for the Performing Arts’ box office hours are 12 P.M. to 6 P.M. Tuesday through Friday.

The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale Presents Their 66th Season Opener BILLINGS MT- The Billings Symphony Orchestra and Chorale’s (BSO&C) 66th season opening night is Saturday, September 24 at the Alberta Bair Theater. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with Concert Cues at 6:45 pm. Just Dance! featuring the Grand Rapids Ballet Company, performing pieces of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake along with a medley of Gershwin favorites, begins at 7:30 pm. Tchaikovsky’s magical ballet tells the story of the doomed love of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette. Prince Siegfried goes out hunting one night and chases a group of swans. One of them transforms into a young woman, Odette, who explains that she and her companions were turned into swans by the evil Baron von Rothbart. The spell can only be broken if someone who has never loved before swears an oath of undying love and promises to marry her. The Prince declares his love to Odette and promises to be loyal forever. George Balanchine choreographed Who Cares? in 1970, but the 40-minute, plotless work harks back to his early years as a young choreographer with Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, when Gershwin was popular in Europe. Later, while Balanchine was choreographing movies and Broadway shows in the United States, he was invited by Gershwin himself to collaborate on Samuel Goldwyn’s Follies in 1937. The collaboration was cut short when the composer succumbed to a brain tumor. American composer and pianist George Gershwin’s first success was the song “Swanee” in 1919. After Rhapsody in Blue was commissioned in 1924 by Paul Whiteman, Gershwin was taken seriously as a composer. In the 20s and 30s he wrote a series of successful musicals and film scores as well as An American in Paris (1928) and the folk opera Porgy and Bess (1934-1935). From 1924 his brother Ira Gershwin wrote nearly all of the lyrics to his vocal music. Gershwin also wrote in the classical idiom, including the Piano Concerto in F Major, and a set of preludes for solo piano.

A total of 16 wraps are complete including five recent installations: “Spring Melody” by Carol Welch at 4th Ave. and Broadway, “Almost Home” by Connie Dillon at 3rd Ave. and N.30th, “Billings on the Buck and Buck” by Lee Walker Gannon on 2nd Ave. and N. 32nd, “An Unfolding” by Sylvie Van Helden at N. 27th and Poly, and “The Line-up” by Brian Reed at 1st Ave. N. and N. 31st. The public can expect four more installations this year by artists Karen Tanner, Lindsey Carrell, Katrina Kinnan, and Melissa Burns. The movement to wrap traffic signal boxes in original artwork has become popular throughout the nation and in other Montana cities such as Missoula and Bozeman as a way to enrich the cityscape and reduce graffiti. The vinyl is resistant to spray paint, markers, and the damage of adhesives.

Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, Carnifex, Oceano

Many of the greatest works of art throughout history were fashioned from grief, anger and overwhelming despair descending on its creators in the aftermath of tragedy and SUICIDE SILENCE’s appropriately titled You Can’t Stop Me is no exception. Plenty of bands trumpet the idea of strength through adversity, but few have lived it like this one. As Rock Sound so expertly observed, music can be a powerful healer. “If there was ever a group of people who believed in the cathartic quality of music, it’s Suicide Silence.” Pub Station, 2502 First Avenue North, Billings, MT General Admission / All Ages Doors at 6 p.m. / Show at 7 p.m. $25 in advance / $28 Day of show Additional fees may apply OCT. 2

THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eightyfive percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head. Attractions include The Big-

horn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the wellknown Crow Chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Crow Agency becomes the ‘teepee capital of the world’ in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration. Cultural tours offered through Little Bighorn College, which can be reached at 406-638-3104. You may also contact the Tourism Office and Visitor Center for more information about the Crow Indian Reservation by calling 406-638-7272.

Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system, farming,

ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

Captain Clark’s canoes and to a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts “Clark Days” on a weekend near the date each year to commemorate Captain William Clark’s visit to the site. “The monument will be hosting a lot of exciting events this season and we really want folks from across the region to come celebrate the history and heritage of the West with us,” said Pompeys Pillar Monument Manager Dave Lefevre. “We especially want folks to put July 30 on their calendars

as this will be the date of the Monument’s Annual Clark Days Celebration.” Riverwalk The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretative center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path quote from Clark’s journals and tell of the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on Aug. 3.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar will provide a free BBQ lunch for the volunteers. If you know you’re coming to help, let me know so we can plan for the quantity of food. National Public Lands Day is a free admission day so come to the Pillar on the 24th even if you can’t volunteer. It’s always a good day to visit Pompeys Pillar National Monument. Thanks for all of your support of our wonderful national monument.

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-90. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something as tasty For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleryies Yellowstone Art Gallery. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen,

of the regiments 650 men, were killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from

Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a 17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center.

Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at yellowstonecountymuseum.org or call 406-856-6811. Free admission.
