MSU School of Art to host World Champion Belt Buckle competition and exhibit BOZEMAN – The Montana State University School of Art, part of the College of Arts and Architecture, will host the fourth annual World Championship Belt Buckle Competition. Bryan Petersen, professor in the MSU School of Art and one of the event’s organizers, said the contest attracts buckle entries from countries throughout the world. “The fourth annual World Championship Belt Buckle Competition is a juried online exhibition inviting all one-of-a-kind, handcrafted, wearable examples in the belt buckle format including western, modern, fashion, narrative and conceptual,” Petersen said. Up to 60 finalists will be selected for the online gallery and an exhibition of prints. Nash Quinn of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, a 2014 finalist, will join MSU’s Petersen as a juror for this year’s competition. As part of the event, Quinn will exhibit his metalwork at the Exit Gallery from Sept. 19-Oct. 7, with an opening reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21. Quinn will also give an artist lecture from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in Cheever Hall, room 214. The winning entry will receive a cash prize and a World Champion Title Belt Buckle, while second and third place winners will receive cash awards. This year’s title buckle will be made by Pat Pruitt of Paguate, New Mexico, the 2014 World Champion buckle maker, whose buckles generally are valued at around $6,000, according to Petersen. For more information, or to register, see: http://www.worldchampionbuckle.com/prospectus. There will be a $30 non-refundable entry fee. The registration deadline is Sept. 16.

The winning entry in the 4th annual World Championship Belt Buckle Competition will receive the World Champion Title Belt Buckle, made this year by Pat Pruitt of Paugate, New Mexico. Pruitt was the 2014 world champion. Photo courtesy of Bryan Petersen

Modern Dance-Illusion Company

‘MOMIX’ returns Oct. 7 BILLINGS, MT — To kick off Alberta Bair Theater’s 2016-17 First Interstate Bank Fox Series, New York City-based MOMIX Dance Company performs its hit “Opus Cactus” in which the landscape of the American Southwest comes to life with dynamic images of cactuses, slithering lizards, and fire dancers at ABT on Friday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. A truncated version kicks off our Valley Federal Credit Union Student Matinee Series at 12:30 that same day. Known internationally for presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, MOMIX is a company of dancer-illusionists under the direction of Moses Pendleton. “Few theater artists today can achieve the level of visual splendor and theatrical magic that Mr. Pendleton can conjure from essentially the sparest of means,” said Robert Greskovic of The Wall Street Journal. In addition to stage performances world-wide, MOMIX has worked in film and television, recently appearing in a national commercial for Hanes underwear and a Target ad that premiered during the airing of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. With performances on PBS’s Dance in America series, France’s Antenne II, and Italian RAI television, the company’s repertory has been broadcast to 55 countries. Prior to their performance on stage at ABT, members of the company will be in our community leading a master class at a local dance studio. This performance by MOMIX is sponsored by First Interstate Bank and ClockTower Inn/Stella’s with additional support from grants by National Endowment for the Arts and WESTAF. Tickets, $36, $28 and $19 for students with valid I.D., are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of 3rd

Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406-256-6052 (box office hours are Monday through Saturday, 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m. ) and/or online at www.albertabairtheater.org. A total of 16 wraps are complete including five recent installations: “Spring Melody” by Carol Welch at 4th Ave. and Broadway, “Almost Home” by Connie Dillon at 3rd Ave. and N.30th, “Billings on the Buck and Buck” by Lee Walker Gannon on 2nd Ave. and N. 32nd, “An Unfolding” by Sylvie Van Helden at N. 27th and Poly, and “The Line-up” by Brian Reed at 1st Ave. N. and N. 31st. The public can expect four more installations this year by artists Karen Tanner, Lindsey Carrell, Katrina Kinnan, and Melissa Burns. The movement to wrap traffic signal boxes in original artwork has become popular throughout the nation and in other Montana cities such as Missoula and Bozeman as a way to enrich the cityscape and reduce graffiti. The vinyl is resistant to spray paint, markers, and the damage of adhesives.

Suicide Silence Many of the greatest works of art throughout history were fashioned from grief, anger and overwhelming despair descending on its creators in the aftermath of tragedy and SUICIDE SILENCE’s appropriately titled You Can’t Stop Me is no exception. Plenty of bands trumpet the idea of strength through adversity, but few have lived it like this one. As Rock Sound so expertly observed, music can be a powerful healer. “If there was ever a group of people who believed in the cathartic quality of music, it’s Suicide Silence.” Suicide Silence’s You Can’t Stop Me boldly debuted a new frontman on the heels of an earthshaking tragedy. The celebrated Southern California based metal band’s fans demonstrated their fierce loyalty and unwavering support when album number four emerged, putting it at #16 on the Billboard 200 with over 15,000 copies sold the first week. Going forward, the album continued to permeate the hearts and minds of the metal subculture; Sirius XM’s Liquid Metal played it more than any other album in 2014. You Can’t Stop Me served as a simultaneous introduction to vocalist Hernan “Eddie” Hermida, as well as a celebration of the brotherhood the band shared with Hermida’s fallen predecessor. The group chose the album’s title from a collection of lyrics left behind by the late Mitch Lucker, while their formidable revamped sound makes it clear that Suicide Silence’s resurrection is complete. Ever since Suicide Silence went public with their plans to continue as a band, they’ve put all of the emotions from the last two years into these songs. “Inherit the Crown” name-checks The Black Crown, as Hermida owned the opportunity to honor his friend’s legacy and carve out a place of his own. Mark Heylmun and Chris Garza (guitars), Dan Kenny (bass) and Alex Lopez (drums) sound more driven than ever, force-feeding their mash-up of death metal, black metal, grind and time-signature bending dissonance into structured, focused and often groove-oriented missives of anger and perseverance. Just as the surviving members of JOY DIVISION were able to remake themselves as NEW ORDER, and as a post-plane crash LYNYRD SKYNYRD was reborn with Johnny Van Zant stepping in for his late brother, You Can’t Stop Me is equal parts mournful tribute and a statement of renewed purpose. Kerrang! championed the new incarnation of Suicide Silence in a glowing KKKK review. “Eddie’s performance is impeccable – switching from a low grumble straight from the bowels of Beelzebub to the higher abrasive screeches… [It’s] an album that sees the band encapsulate all their past achievements whilst looking forward to brand new horizons.” Friends and peers George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher of death metal legends CANNIBAL CORPSE and Greg Puciato of Noisecore/mathrock saboteurs THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN (and Suicide Silence label mates KILLER BE KILLED) both make guest appearances. You Can’t Stop Me was produced and mixed by Steve Evetts (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, GLASSJAW, SEPULTURA), the band’s longtime friend and collaborator who was scheduled to

work on new material with Lucker mere days after the singer’s passing. The close-knit group of metal heavyweights was on course for a well-deserved victory lap of sorts by fall, 2012. The group had been together for a decade, having shaped and unquestionably led the “deathcore” subgenre as assuredly as MORBID ANGEL became synonymous with death metal, or KORN with nü-metal, upon arrival of their debut album, The Cleansing. Suicide Silence was named “Best New Talent” at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards and had already dominated the Rockstar Mayhem touring festival by the time No Time To Bleed broke into the Billboard Top 40. “Wake Up” and “Lifted” became underground classics, as Suicide Silence transcended the subgenre they helped define and became peers with bands they’d grown up listening to as kids in Riverside.

minaries from the band’s friends and peers in metal stood as frontmen, including Chad Gray (MUDVAYNE), Randy Blythe (LAMB OF GOD), Robb Flynn (MACHINE HEAD), Max Cavalera (SOULFLY) and many others. One of the esteemed guests was none other than Eddie Hermida, a close friend of the band & then-vocalist of ALL SHALL PERISH. Hermida’s performance of “Slaves to Substance,” recorded along with the rest of the set for a subsequent CD/DVD release, demonstrated a vibrant chemistry with the members of Suicide Silence & eventually led to him being the only vocalist considered for the band’s continuance. An understanding, supportive and loyal audience responded enthusiastically to the October, 2013 announcement that Suicide Silence would officially continue with Hermida at the helm. The news was accompanied by a vocal sample of “You Only Live Once” and a commitment that the band would carry on in Mitch’s honor. The new Suicide Silence made their live debut at Australia’s Soundwave in 2014, part of a massive lineup that included GREEN DAY, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, A DAY TO REMEMBER, MASTODON and many more. Fittingly, the reinvigorated Alice In Chains was one of the headliners, riding high on a second comeback-era record. The year included a return to Rockstar Mayhem, a coheadlining tour with Black Dahlia Murder, a sold out run across Europe and a performance at SLIPKNOT’s Knotfest, featuring a “who’s who” of modern metal, including FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and VOLBEAT. Holding true to the their fallen friend’s “You Can’t Stop Me” ethos, Suicide Silence blazed into the New Year with the announcement of a Spring headlining tour with EMMURE called “Stronger Than Faith” and a return to Photo from www.facebook.com/suicidesilence the UK and Europe, this time headlining the The Black Crown was the full realization of evImpericon Progression Tour, with support from erything Suicide Silence stood for and stood against. Rock Of Ages

It’s the tail end of the big bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary venues, a place where Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing ( and longs for small-town girls Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas). But the rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when developers sweet into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save The Strip before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer. Wesley and The Revolving, Not Your Boyfriend’s Band

Alt-indie Folkgrass is the way Wesley and the Revolving (WatR) measures against the genre. The three-piece string band creates a complexity of simple music that swells and falls in between the heart beats. In support of Wesley’s 7-finger guitar playing and vocals are the talents of Jarret Kostrba’s wah-wah mandolin solos and Bryant Mettler’s stand up bass thumping. Wesley and the Revolving recently released an ep titled, WatR, and is working on material for their full-length album due out in the fall. Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, Carnifex, Oceano

Many of the greatest works of art throughout history were fashioned from grief, anger and overwhelming despair descending on its creators in the aftermath of tragedy and SUICIDE SILENCE’s appropriately titled You Can’t Stop Me is no exception. Plenty of bands trumpet the idea of strength through adversity, but few have lived it like this one. As Rock Sound so expertly observed, music can be a powerful healer. “If there was ever a group of people who believed in the cathartic quality of music, it’s Suicide Silence.” Pub Station, 2502 First Avenue North, Billings, MT General Admission / All Ages Doors at 6 p.m. / Show at 7 p.m. $25 in advance / $28 Day of show Additional fees may apply OCT. 1

ACT OF DEFIANCE

The Goddamn Gallows

The Goddamn Gallows came from the heart of America’s Rust Belt, arising from a night of flophouse violence. Drifting across the states, they cemented their sound in Portland, OR and later in Los Angeles, CA, where they lived in abandoned buildings, squatter camps, storage units and shoebox apartments. In 2007, they left everything behind and spent the next 4 years living out of whatever vehicle would get them to the next town. Building upon their original sound of twanged-out, punk rock gutterbilly (Life of Sin 2004 and Gutterbillyblues 2007), they began picking up stray musicians along the way and adding to their sound; washboard, accordion, mandolin and banjo (Ghost of the Rails 2009 and 7 Devils 2011) creating a sound referred to as “hobocore”, “gypsy-punk” or “americana-punk”, while never being stuck in any one sound. The Goddamn Gallows continue to rapidly grow a devoted following with their volatile and spectacular live shows; a contagious, spontaneous eruption of unpredictability. THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eightyfive percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head. Attractions include The Big-

horn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the wellknown Crow Chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Crow Agency becomes the ‘teepee capital of the world’ in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration. Cultural tours offered through Little Bighorn College, which can be reached at 406-638-3104. You may also contact the Tourism Office and Visitor Center for more information about the Crow Indian Reservation by calling 406-638-7272.

Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system, farming,

ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

DAILY TOURS

16 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. The main entrance gate will also be open during these hours of operation. Walk-ins are always welcome every day from dawn to dusk. Daily fees are $7 per vehicle. Interagency passes are honored and can be purchased at the fee station.

Famous Engraving A boardwalk leads to Capt. Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar. Trails lead visitors past a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes and to a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts “Clark Days” on a weekend near the date each year to commemorate Captain William Clark’s visit to the site. “The monument will be hosting a lot of exciting events this season and we really want folks from across the region to come celebrate the history and heritage of the West with us,” said Pompeys Pillar Monument Manager Dave Lefevre. “We especially want folks to put July 30 on their calendars as this will be the date of the Monument’s Annual Clark Days Celebration.” Riverwalk The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretative center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path quote from Clark’s journals and tell of the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on Aug. 3.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve and protect Pompeys Pillar National Monument through education, interpretation and special projects and assists the Bureau of Land Management with its management of the site. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar also manage the gift store at the Monument. For more information about volunteering, contact the Friends of Pompeys Pillar office at 406-969-5380. More information on the national monument can be found at www.pompeyspillar.org.

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-90. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something as tasty For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleryies Yellowstone Art Gallery. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center. Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
