Magic City Monster Con. BILLINGS, October 7, 8, 9, 2016 Fans of all things horror and science fiction are called upon to gather together at the Billings Hotel & Convention Center and indulge in all things horror and science fiction! Celebrities, vendors, contests, magic shows, freakshow tent, Ghostbusters, movie/tv cars, discussion panels, live music, meet & greets, autographs, memorabilia, movie showings, fire show, face painting, balloons, makeup, tattoos, and so much more! Three days of fun and social gatherings themed to horror and science fiction that will leave fans with unforgettable memories. Magic City Monster Con is an event not to be missed and never forgotten. Children ages 12 and under are free (two per paying adult; additional children are $5 each). A weekend pass is $30, and a single day pass is $17. Tickets can be purchased via the website until Tuesday, October 4, 2016, after which, tickets may be purchased at the event. Danny Hicks is most remembered for his role as “Jake” from the cult classic “Evil Dead 2”! Danny has also had roles in other

great films, such as “Intruder”,”Darkman”, “My Name Is Bruce”, “Porkchop”, “Porkchop 3D”, and has been featured in other films like “Wishmaster”, “Maniac Cop”, “Spiderman 2”, “2001 Maniacs” and “Oz The Great and Powerful”! Dirk Benedict, most known from his role as “Face” on the hit tv show “The ATeam” will be on site all three days for meet & greets, photographs and autographs with fans!Dirk Benedict also starred in the tv show and original film, “Battlestar Galactica” as Lieutenant Starbuck! Danny Hicks, warmly remembered as the hillbilly character, “Jake” on “Evil Dead 2” will also be available all three days to meet with fans for photographs and autographs! Cast mates from the film, “Return of the Living Dead,” Thom Mathews and Linnea Quigley, are also going to have tables to sign autographs and meet with fans. Thom Mathews has starred in such memorable horror films as “Return of the Living Dead,” “Return of the Living Dead: Part 2,” and “Friday the 13th Part 6.” Linnea Quigley was the unforgettable character “Trash” on Return of the Living Dead and joins cast mate Thom Mathews for Magic City Monster Con! She also was in Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984), Night of the Demons (1988), and hundreds more horror films, granting her the title of being a scream queen!

Yellowstone Art Museum’s Call to Artists

Call to Artists! Submit your work to the Yellowstone Art Museum’s 49th Annual Art Auction. The event takes place March 4th, 2017. Submission deadline is Friday, October 14th, 2016. Submission is free for all artists. The juror will be Kenneth L. Schuster. Kenneth is the Director & Chief Curator at The Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming. We are looking for U.S. artists, 2D and 3D works, created within the past 3 years (except jewelry). The Artist must be at least 18 years old to enter. Summer ArtWalk Downtown Billings Friday, October 7, 2016 5 – 9 p.m. The Autumn ArtWalk is the third of five events in the 22nd Season that runs through February 2017. There are 37 entries in the Autumn ArtWalk, including 10 One-Time Participants. Artists new to the ArtWalk include Carlin Bear Don’t Walk at Artists Anonymous, Rebecca Douglas at LimberTree Yoga Studio and SHYLO aka Buddy Ulrich, a “legal graffiti” artist at Underground Culture Krew. In the spirit of Halloween surprises, Good Earth Market will have macabre-themed music, Yellowstone Art Museum stages an early opening costume preview of its upcoming Masquerade Ball and Terpsichord Dance Company presents a live performance at Better to Gather, featuring highlights of their upcoming season. Artwalk hours are between 5 and 9 p.m. All events are free. Many sites offer music and refreshments. Featured artists often attend to greet visitors and talk about their art and the creative process. ArtWalk is a great opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones, visit with artists and gallery owners, and most importantly, view and purchase original art and fine crafts. THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eightyfive percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head. Attractions include The Big-

horn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the wellknown Crow Chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system, farming,

ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. Writers Gather For High Plains BookFest & Awards The Writer’s Voice, Billings Cultural Partners and Billings Public Library announce the 2016 High Plains BookFest and Book Awards to be held October 6-9 at various locations in downtown Billings. More than 40 writers from the western U.S. and Canada will read from their work. This year’s theme, The Writers Community, highlights the generosity of contemporary authors of the American West and the prairie provinces of Canada in mentoring emerging writers. “The Writers Community” was a master-level writing workshop presented by The Writer’s Voice from 1991 to 2006; seven of the former instructors will participate in this year’s BookFest through a generous grant from the William Bingham Foundation. Celebrated writers David McCumber, Gary Ferguson, and Alan Kesselheim will read in the 2nd Floor Gallery of the Yellowstone Art Museum on Friday, October 7, at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, October 8, from 3:30 p.m. at Wild Ginger, located on Montana Avenue at North 27th Street, former Wyoming poet laureate David Romtvedt will provide

music and poetry. At the same time, nature writer Phil Condon will read from his work at the Yellowstone Art Museum’s Visible Vault. On Sunday, October 9, visiting writers Lynda Sexson, David Romtvedt, and William Hjortsberg will read and discuss their writing from 11 am to 1 p.m. at This House of Books on 224 N. Broadway. Finalists in the Billings Public Library’s High Plains Book Awards competition will be reading from their work at the BookFest on Friday and Saturday at various locations in downtown Billings. 13th ANNUAL HARVESTFEST

Billings, MT -Saturday, October 8th, 2016 is Downtown Billings’ 13th Annual Harvestfest under Skypoint from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hosted by the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA), this fall festival features Arts & Crafts tents, Farmers Market produce, a variety of food trucks, free children’s activities, a pumpkin pie baking contest, the Fall Gift-Basket Raffle, and live entertainment under Skypoint at Broadway and 2nd Ave. Montana Brewing Company will host a seasonal beer garden outside at 113 N. Broadway from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The public can expect eight varieties of Pumpkin Beer, complimentary t-shirts, and special glassware give-aways. The pumpkin pie baking contest will take place under Skypoint starting at 11am with the contest results announcement at 1pm. The contest is open to the public and applications can be found on www.downtownbillings.com. All applicants must bring their pies to Skypoint at Broadway and 2nd Ave. by 10am the day of the festival. The Kid’s Area will be located on Broadway near 3rd Ave. from 9am-3pm. Activities will include face-painting and free crafts. There will be games for adults and children including a pumpkin seed spitting contest and the Cornhole Bean Bag Toss. Additionally, the Fall Gift-Basket Raffle will feature gift-baskets donated by downtown merchants and all proceeds will go to DBA street beautification projects.

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
