Yellowstone Art Museum introduces

Encore!

If you missed the recent exhibition Primal Urges at The Yellowstone Art Museum, which featured loans of work by European master artists who primarily focused on the human figure, then you won’t want to miss this presentation of two additional and splendid works by the notable sculptor Aristide Maillol along with a still-life painting by Fernand Léger. The possibility of viewing works by these two French masters within the context of the YAM’s exhibitions of historic and contemporary regional art is an exciting opportunity for any art lover. Upon visiting the museum, visitors will be greeted by two Maillol sculptures. The installation of Maillol’s spectacular L’Air is an especially unexpected treat. This massive cast lead sculpture was developed as an artist’s proof for bronze castings that would follow. The scale is as grand as the waxed lead patina (finished surface) is rich and evocative. Another smaller sculpture Le monument À Claude Debussy is a sublime tribute to the life’s work of the composer. Both sculptures honor French culture. L’Air serves a tribute to the crew of the hydroplane Croix du Sud, which went missing during the twenty-fourth trans-Atlantic crossing of a newly established mail service between France and South America. It disappeared after take-off on December 7, 1936. Senior Curator Bob Durden stated, “These exceptional works by Maillol exemplify why he was one of the most highly-sought after artists of his age. He not only had the ability to capture the human form in a poetic and graceful manner, but his allegorical references to nature, symbolized by the female form, are distinctive and dignified, reflecting his respect for his wife who often modeled for him, and women in general. As a master

of refined forms, Maillol did not resort to a graphic rendition of the human body as some of his Northern European peers did in painting. The Léger painting on exhibit is a wonderful example of the transitional state of Cubism during the era and this artist’s influence on what would become ‘Pop Art.’ The comparison will be obvious to anyone who visits the museum when they view this work side-by-side with a recent loan of Roy Lichtenstein’s work—one of the great artists of the Pop Art movement.” The three noted works went on display September 20th after the YAM’s curatorial staff took an entire day to install them while the museum was closed to the public. Durden stated “Great care and patience is required when handling objects of this nature, not only due to the logistics involved with moving and installing them, but because of the trust that is placed in the museum for proper management of such twentieth-century treasures. We give all art in our care equal respect and handling. However, the objects by deceased artists always carry an additional responsibility—these works are truly irreplaceable.” The works will remain on view through January 22, 2017, courtesy of an anonymous lender. In addition to these special offerings, the museum has other lively and informative exhibitions on display. The museum is family friendly and barrier free. So, treat yourself, family members, or friends to a trip to the Yellowstone Art Museum and witness local and global cultural artifacts. Iconic Movie, TV Series ‘Fame’ Live On Stage at Alberta Bair Theater October 30 at 3:00 p.m. Only 300 tickets remain for Fame the Musical, which is kicking off Alberta Bair Theater’s Broadway Series presented by U.S. Bank, on Sunday, October 30 at 3:00 p.m. The 1980’s pop culture phenomenon of Fame is now live on stage, and the national tour is making a stop for one night only in Billings. Set at the famous School for the Performing Arts in New York, high octane choreography drives the story of special relationships, revealing hopes and dreams of talented students and their dedicated teachers. With its unforgettable lyrics, “FAME! I'm gonna live forever! Baby Remember my name!,” the title song is the fever pitch anthem that drives these competitive young people forward in their quest to the bright lights of show business. Staged in more than 25 countries to 50 million people, David De Silva, known affectionately as Father Fame, once again proves the viability of audiences rooting for young people to fight for and realize their dreams

with this fully staged theatrical version of the Emmy winning TV series and Hollywood hit movie Fame. This all new presentation of Fame the Musical is produced by the veteran team of James Murtha and William Weir, under the direction of Dom Ruggiero. Acclaimed choreographer Antoinette DiPietropolo choreographed the dance numbers. The musical’s book was written by Jose Fernandez with show lyrics by Jacques Levy and music by Stephen Margoshes. The title song "FAME" was written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore. ABT’s Broadway Series is presented by U.S. Bank. This performance is sponsored by ABC6/Fox4 and MY105.9. Tickets, $54, $49, $39 and $28 for students with valid I.D., are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of 3rd Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406-2566052 (box office hours are Monday through Saturday, 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m. ) and/or online at www.albertabairtheater.org.

The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale Presents Music of the Masters Concert

The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale’s (BSO&C) second season concert is Saturday October 15, at the Alberta Bair Theater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with Concert Cues at 6:45 p.m.. The BSO&C returns to the revolutionary ideas of classical and romantic composers; Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, and George Handel with Music of the Masters featuring world renowned pianist Brian Ganz, beginning at 7:30 p.m.. The Billings Symphony Orchestra performs three great masterpieces from three of the most influential composers of all time. This is the first performance of Concerto Grosso, No.5, in D minor, composed by George Handel for the Billings Symphony. Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, in D major, also known as the London Symphony is the final symphony written by the composer. The last time the BSO performed this piece was under George Perkins in 1965. The final piece is Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4, in G major, featuring guest pianist, Brian Ganz. This is the third performance by the Billings Symphony. Brian Ganz is regarded internationally as one of the leading pianists of his generation. “One comes away from a Brian Ganz recital not only exhilarated by the power of the performance but also moved by his search for artistic truth.” Joan Reinthaler, Washington Post. Mr. Ganz is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he studied

with Leon Fleisher. He also studied with Ylda Novik and the late Claire Deene. A gifted teacher, he has been Artistin-Residence at St. Mary's College of Maryland since 1986, and in 2000 joined the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory. He has been honored to serve on numerous competition juries, including the LongThibaud Competition. Mr. Ganz deems himself “an active explorer of the many ways in which the study and performance of great music can remind us of the Spirit that unites all living things.” He has donated numerous performances in benefit concerts and was a founding member of the Washington Chapter of Artists to End Hunger

With their roots submerged in the thick buttery mud of traditional bluegrass, The Lil’ Smokies have sonically blossomed into a leading player in the progressive acoustic sphere, creating a new and wholly unique, melody driven sound of their own. The quintet, from Missoula, MT, has been hard at work, writing, touring and playing to an ever-growing fan base for the past 6 years. The fruits of their labor recently culminating with their win this year at the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass festival band competition. In October 2014, they were nominated by the Internal Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) for Momentum Band of the Year and in 2013 they won The Northwest String Summit Band Competition. With a unique blend of traditional bluegrass, newgrass, innumerable unique originals, sheer raw energy, and exquisite musicianship, The Lil’ Smokies weave seamlessly through genres, leaving behind melodies you’ll be singing to yourself for days and a jaw you’ll have to pick up off the floor. The Lil’ Smokies have no problem captivating large audiences. Sharing the stage with heavyweights like Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Keller Williams, Greensky Bluegrass, The Emmit-Nershi Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Travellin’ McCourys, Sam Bush Band, Fruition, Infamous Stringdusters, Bradford Lee Folk and The Bluegrass Playboys, and dozens of others. The Smokies have played the Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival (2011), the Bozeman Bluegrass Fest (2011), Sandpoint Summer Fest (2013), Wintergrass (2014), River City Roots Festival (2011, 2013, 2014),

Northwest Folklife Festival (2014), the Northwest String Summit’s Further Stage and Main Stage (2013, 2014). The Velocity Of Autumn

By Eric Coble Alexandra, a 79-year-old artist is in a showdown with her family over where she’ll spend her remaining years. In Alexandra’s corner are her wit, her volcanic passion and the fact that she’s barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov Cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris, who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandra’s second floor window and becomes the family’s unlikely mediator. The Velocity Of Autumn is a wickedly funny and wonderfully touching discovery of the fragility and ferocity of life. JAMES MCMURTRY

James McMurtry spins stories with a poet’s pen (“Long Island Sound”) and a painter’s precision (“She Loves Me”). Proof: The acclaimed songwriter’s new Complicated Game. McMurtry’s first collection in six years spotlights a craftsman in absolutely peak form as he turns from political toward personal (“These Things I’ve Come to Know,” “You Got to Me”). “The lyrical theme is mostly about relationships,” McMurtry says. “It’s also a little about the big old world verses the poor little farmer or fisherman. I never make a conscious decision about what to write about.” Complicated Game delivers McMurtry’s trademark story songs time and again (“Copper Canteen,” “Deaver’s Crossing”), but the record brings a new (and certainly no less energetic) sonic approach. Simply put: McMurtry brings forth a another new masterpiece. Further evidence: McMurtry’s Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005). The former earned his highest Billboard 200 chart position in nearly two decades and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Meanwhile, Childish Things scored endless critical praise and spent six full weeks topping the Americana Music Radio chart in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, Childish Things won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year and “We Can’t Make It Here” was named the rapidly rising organization’s Song of the Year. Presented by Ellen Baumler After serving a second term in the Montana legislature in 1917, Senator Orville Willett of Mineral County was diagnosed with leprosy. This program traces the story of Willett’s ten-year quarantine in Montana, his reliance on faith healing, the legislation his illness prompted, and his eventual removal to the federal leprosarium at Carville, Louisiana. Willett’s experience provides the framework to educate the audience about Hansen’s disease, its medical peculiarities, recent discoveries and treatments, and the social stigma it still carries today. Baumler’s storytelling skills bring Willett’s poignant isolation and the history of this little-understood disease to the modern audience. Jared & The Mill, Edison

We are Jared & The Mill. All of us were born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and we still call it home today. When we first got started in the summer of 2011 we just wanted to play some music with our best buds, have a few shows, and have a good time. Jared and Michael had been buddies and playing music together since they were kids, and after they met up with another childhood duo, Josh Morin and Larry Gast III, after that they realized they needed a bass player, so along came Chuck Morris III. Some months later, Jared ran into Gabe Hall Rodrigues, a local accordion and keys player at a coffee shop. Gabe joined, and as it goes we were soon hammering along in the local scene, playing alongside the bands of new friends and old throughout Arizona. The wheels kept turning, and before we knew it we had over three years of touring under our boots; playing in the living rooms, dive bars, venues, theaters, music festivals, and even arenas of this big ol’ country of our’s alongside fellow upcoming bands, and with some of the biggest acts we had always looked up to. Winner of the 2016 NILE National Anthem Contest Billings, MT--Congratulations to the 2016 NILE National Anthem Contest winners, the High Country Cowboys. These three gentlemen will perform horseback to open the NILE rodeo Thursday, October 20 at 7 p.m. The singing cowboy trio from Red Lodge Montana, The High Country Cowboys, takes listeners back to a time when country/western music was real. They evoke silver screen cowboys like Roy Rogers, Western harmony groups like Sons of the Pioneers, and country music icons like Marty Robbins. Born and raised in Montana where the cowboy spirit is still alive, the three brothers, John, Joe, and Marty have found a desire to revive all the aspects of Traditional Western Music, that were born to it, in its heyday. The High Country Cowboys, members of the Western Music Association, have released several albums. In 2015, their lead singer Marty, was awarded as the WMA's Yodeler of the Year. With their two guitars, (made by bass player Joe), and three part western harmony, their traditional sound continues to gain a wider audience. Since their start at the local Pollard Hotel in 2013, they have performed at numerous fundraisers, fairs, outdoor concerts and Theaters. They also perform the National Anthem from horseback at different Rodeos. In April of 2016, they debuted at the Alberta Bair Theater in Billings MT, before a crowd of 500. Later that year they played for a crowd of 2,000 at St. Johns Summer Concert Series, also in Billings. While many folks believe that this is something that they've been striving for all their lives, any one of the boys will tell you that their music career has been something that they never dreamed of doing! "It is more like something that came about accidentally!" You can find the boys online at www.thehighcountrycowboys.com.

Cancer gets a "No Score" from Kids N Cowboys at the NILE

Billings, MT--Over 23 years ago, an organization called Kids 'N' Cowboys was founded. This organization has been rounding up kids with cancer from all around eastern Montana and northern Wyoming, and treating them and their families to a fun evening at the NILE ProRodeo. Not only are the families provided with dinner and rodeo tickets, but the organization also supplies them with travel expenses, lodging and meals. "You've got these kids out there, especially from the surrounding towns, and they might feel like they are the only ones going through it. So we bring them together, and not concentrate cancer, because we all know that is why we are there, but we just have a good time," states Founder, Tim Crowley. "Everyone gets treated the same. It's very important to have the whole family there." The day includes everything from firefighters and a fire truck, to Shriner clowns, rodeo queens, NILE Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls and even some horseback-riding. The families enjoy dinner catered by Yellowstone Kelly's, followed by the final evening performance of the NILE ProRodeo on Saturday, October 22. Most of the children are patients of Dr. Kelker, a Billings Pediatric Oncologist, who attends the event almost every year. "It's cool for the new families to come and meet the families that have been there for a few years and to see the kids who have had cancer out and about and doing well...it gives them hope," continued Crowley. While Kids 'N' Cowboys is fully funded, donations can be sent to Kelker's Kids Fund at the Billings Clinic Foundation, PO Box 31031, Billings, MT 59107. The NILE is proud to host Kid 'N' Cowboys on Saturday, October 22 for the final night of the NILE PRCA Rodeo event that kicks off the 2016 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo season.

Youngest, Wildest, Pony Riders at the 2016 NILE Rodeo The toughest kids in the west compete in Wild Pony Racing at the NILE rodeo October 20-22, at MetraPark. Teams of three must hold on, get on, and stay on a wild pony for a maximum of two seconds. The team that can do that the fastest wins! The anchor holds the end of the lead rope, the mugger holds the pony, and the rider has to get on and stay on the pony. Five teams compete during the rodeos Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21--the top two teams from each night return for the final round Saturday night, October 22. It wild and hilarious. When even the most seasoned rodeo goers are leaning on the fence watching, it's a good indicator of enrapturing entertainment. This event is in place of mutton bustin.

Three kids 12 and under and weighing less than 150 pounds. Teams must be turned into office with all three teams members forms completed and signed before teams are considered entered. Teams must also pay in full at time of entry to be considered entered and entries close Friday, October 14. Teams will be drawn but can indicate at entry time whether they have a preference of Thursday or Friday night. Teams will be notified of their draw Tuesday, October 18. Parents must sign liability release $60 entry fee per team. Ponies provided by Lazy 3S Rodeo Co.

MSUB presents, “The 1880 Crow Delegation to D.C.: Cultural Identity, Representation, and Legacy,” trains across the nation. “Medicine Crow drew pictures of many sights, including the U.S. Capitol Building, trains, steam boats and military gunboats on the Potomac River, and animals he saw,” Heidenreich said. “All these, as well as drawings of his military exploits, are part of the Barstow Ledger Drawings kept in the (MSUB) Library Special Collections.” Red Star, descendent of Medicine Crow, lives and works in Portland where this installation, with digital reproductions of Medicine Crow’s ledger drawings, appeared at the Portland Art Museum in late 2014. The re-installation of her project at MSUB marks the first time her project will be shown with Medicine Crow’s original drawings. The opportunity to show this body of work so near her home and with the original Medicine Crow drawings is very meaningful to Red Star. She hopes the series of presentations and conversations extend an effort to “humanize Medicine Crow.” “The single delegation portraits of Medicine Crow are the seed for the entire concept of the exhibition,” Red Star said. “I view this exhibition as my ultimate remake of Medicine Crow; a chance for me to tell the story behind the photographs. I want people to realize that the images of Medicine Crow are more than just a handsome Native man. The images represent a human being, a reservation era chief, the forming of the Crow Indian reservation, the loss of Crow lands, the changing of a people, and the resilience of a culture.” Other presentations include an overview of the history of the Crow Peace Delegation, a discussion on issues in the Medicine Crow drawings and Red Star’s project, a conversation on Crow identity and resilience through the arts, and a musical performance focusing on traditional Crow songs.

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES - Montana State University Billings’ Library and the Northcutt Steele Gallery will host a free series of presentations and community conversations in conjunction with an art exhibition at the gallery and an exhibition of historical materials. The series, “The 1880 Crow Delegation to D.C.: Cultural Identity, Representation, and Legacy,” responds to an exhibition by contemporary Crow/Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star, which will be on display in the Northcutt Steele Gallery October 20 through December 1. This project is being supported by Humanities Montana with additional support provided by Northcutt Steele Gallery, MSUB Library, MSUB Foundation, MSUB Department of Art, and MSUB American Indian Outreach. Curated and coordinated by MSUB art history faculty and gallery director, Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, the series features presentations by and conversations with local, regional, and national humanities scholars and artists exploring Native American art, experience, cultural identity, and representation. The show has been a labor of love for Gilbertson, who has been bringing the show’s many pieces together for two years. “I was looking for a contemporary Crow artist to feature and came across Wendy’s work. I reached out to her and was thrilled when she responded,” Gilbertson said. “When she was back for the Crow Fair two summers ago we discovered she was working with the Barstow (Ledger Drawings) and the Portland Art Museum to commission plush (toys) based off the drawings.” The ledger drawings will be discussed during Dr. C. Adrian Heidenreich’s lecture, which opens the series. He is an MSUB professor emeritus of Native American Studies and Anthropology. In 1880 six Crow leaders, Peelatchiwaaxpáash/Old Crow (Raven), Iichíilachkash/Long Elk, Alaxchiiaahush/Plenty Coups, Bia Eélisaash/ Large Stomach Woman (Pregnant Woman) aka Two Belly, Déaxitchish/Pretty Eagle, and Peelatchiwaaxpáash/Chief Medicine Crow (Raven) were selected as delegates to meet with government officials in Washington, D.C. The Crow leaders, accompanied by U.S. government agents and interpreters went from the Crow Agency, then located in Absarokee, Montana, riding stagecoaches and

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-90. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something as tasty For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleryies Yellowstone Art Gallery. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center. Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
