Yellowstone Art Museum introduces
Encore!
If you missed the recent exhibition Primal Urges at The Yellowstone Art Museum, which featured loans of work by European master artists who primarily focused on the human figure, then you won’t want to miss this presentation of two additional and splendid works by the notable sculptor Aristide Maillol along with a still-life painting by Fernand Léger. The possibility of viewing works by these two French masters within the context of the YAM’s exhibitions of historic and contemporary regional art is an exciting opportunity for any art lover. Upon visiting the museum, visitors will be greeted by two Maillol sculptures. The installation of Maillol’s spectacular L’Air is an especially unexpected treat. This massive cast lead sculpture was developed as an artist’s proof for bronze castings that would follow. The scale is as grand as the waxed lead patina (finished surface) is rich and evocative. Another smaller sculpture Le monument À Claude Debussy is a sublime tribute to the life’s work of the composer. Both sculptures honor French culture. L’Air serves a tribute to the crew of the hydroplane Croix du Sud, which went missing during the twenty-fourth trans-Atlantic crossing of a newly established mail service between France and South America. It disappeared after take-off on December 7, 1936. Senior Curator Bob Durden stated, “These exceptional works by Maillol exemplify why he was one of the most highly-sought after artists of his age. He not only had the ability to capture the human form in a poetic and graceful manner, but his allegorical references to nature, symbolized by the female form, are distinctive and dignified, reflecting his respect for his wife who often modeled for him, and women in general. As a master
of refined forms, Maillol did not resort to a graphic rendition of the human body as some of his Northern European peers did in painting. The Léger painting on exhibit is a wonderful example of the transitional state of Cubism during the era and this artist’s influence on what would become ‘Pop Art.’ The comparison will be obvious to anyone who visits the museum when they view this work side-by-side with a recent loan of Roy Lichtenstein’s work—one of the great artists of the Pop Art movement.” The three noted works went on display September 20th after the YAM’s curatorial staff took an entire day to install them while the museum was closed to the public. Durden stated “Great care and patience is required when handling objects of this nature, not only due to the logistics involved with moving and installing them, but because of the trust that is placed in the museum for proper management of such twentieth-century treasures. We give all art in our care equal respect and handling. However, the objects by deceased artists always carry an additional responsibility—these works are truly irreplaceable.” The works will remain on view through January 22, 2017, courtesy of an anonymous lender. In addition to these special offerings, the museum has other lively and informative exhibitions on display. The museum is family friendly and barrier free. So, treat yourself, family members, or friends to a trip to the Yellowstone Art Museum and witness local and global cultural artifacts. Iconic Movie, TV Series ‘Fame’ Live On Stage at Alberta Bair Theater October 30 at 3:00 p.m. Only 300 tickets remain for Fame the Musical, which is kicking off Alberta Bair Theater’s Broadway Series presented by U.S. Bank, on Sunday, October 30 at 3:00 p.m. The 1980’s pop culture phenomenon of Fame is now live on stage, and the national tour is making a stop for one night only in Billings. Set at the famous School for the Performing Arts in New York, high octane choreography drives the story of special relationships, revealing hopes and dreams of talented students and their dedicated teachers. With its unforgettable lyrics, “FAME! I'm gonna live forever! Baby Remember my name!,” the title song is the fever pitch anthem that drives these competitive young people forward in their quest to the bright lights of show business. Staged in more than 25 countries to 50 million people, David De Silva, known affectionately as Father Fame, once again proves the viability of audiences rooting for young people to fight for and realize their dreams
with this fully staged theatrical version of the Emmy winning TV series and Hollywood hit movie Fame. This all new presentation of Fame the Musical is produced by the veteran team of James Murtha and William Weir, under the direction of Dom Ruggiero. Acclaimed choreographer Antoinette DiPietropolo choreographed the dance numbers. The musical’s book was written by Jose Fernandez with show lyrics by Jacques Levy and music by Stephen Margoshes. The title song "FAME" was written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore. ABT’s Broadway Series is presented by U.S. Bank. This performance is sponsored by ABC6/Fox4 and MY105.9. Tickets, $54, $49, $39 and $28 for students with valid I.D., are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of 3rd Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406-2566052 (box office hours are Monday through Saturday, 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m. ) and/or online at www.albertabairtheater.org.
“I Speak”: Native Language Documentary and Discussion Few factors are as defining for our identities as language. Take part in a fascinating opportunity to examine in depth the experience of one group of Native American teens as they work to learn their ancestral language. The Yellowstone Art Museum will screen The Young Ancestors, a prize-winning documentary selected for many film festivals. Viewers have stated that this film is “beautiful and powerful; it made me cry” and that it is a “beautiful work and concept.” Documentarian Aimée Barry Broustra traces a group of Southwestern Native teens who, under the guidance of a mentor, undertook the difficult journey to revitalize their language and culture through language. A film about courage and hope, and the triumph of honor and respect, The Young Ancestors promises a future rich in the kind of diversity that only language can provide. More information about the film
is available at www.theyoungancestors. com. “I Speak,” the YAM’s program combining the film screening and discussion, will take place on Thursday, October 20, 2016, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the YAM’s Murdock Gallery. The screening of this hour-long documentary will be followed by a discussion between the filmmaker Aimée Barry Broustra and Dr. Richard Littlebear, president of Chief Dull Knife College in Lame Deer on the Northern Cheyenne reservation. Dr. Littlebear is also a member of the board of the Indigenous Language Institute. Ms. Broustra, a Temple University graduate, is a producer, director, and writer with other documentary credits that include a film about horsemanship. Other programming about Native American culture and issues will take place in October and November at MSU-Billings, including the opening of
Teens featured in the “The Young Ancestors”
an exhibition of the work of Wendy Red Star. At the YAM, art by regional Native American artists, including Kevin Red Star and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, will be on exhibit in the Boundless Visions exhibition. The galleries will be open the evening of the “I Speak” program. The program is a must-see for those passionate about language, cultural diversity, and Native American issues. Thursday, October 20, 2016, is Educators Free Day. Admission to the museum is free in honor of all educators, and this includes the “I Speak” evening program. For more information, visit the museum’s website www.artmuseum.org.
Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ at Alberta Bair Theater Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ tours through prehistoric Australia, bringing an eye-popping array of ancient creatures to life on stage. The audience observes and interacts with extraordinarily life-like creatures, just like those that inhabited the Southern Hemisphere millions of years ago. And, they will meet a menagerie of insects, mammals and dinosaurs in their ancient environment, in this highly imaginative, entertaining and educational live show. Erth’s large-scale puppets were developed in consultation with paleontologists, based on current science and interpretations of fossil evidence. Employing sophisticated design and electronics,
these giants are brought to life by skilled performers and puppeteers, made all the more real through the magic of theatre. From the sweetly curious baby Dryosaur, to the peaceful hulk Titanosaur, and even the teethgnashing T-rex -- Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ is a unique interactive theater performance that stimulates the imagination in a way that connects children to their world. Erth Visual & Physical, Inc. is a highly creative ‘visual and physical’ theatre company based in Sydney, Australia. Since its beginnings in 1990, the company has created installations, site specific
productions, performance artistry, and original live theatre -- always striving to provide audiences with eye popping visual experiences. The Velocity Of Autumn
By Eric Coble Alexandra, a 79-year-old artist is in a showdown with her family over where she’ll spend her remaining years. In Alexandra’s corner are her wit, her volcanic passion and the fact that she’s barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov Cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris, who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandra’s second floor window and becomes the family’s unlikely mediator. The Velocity Of Autumn is a wickedly funny and wonderfully touching discovery of the fragility and ferocity of life. Leprosy in Montana: The Story of Orville Willett Presented by Ellen Baumler
After serving a second term in the Montana legislature in 1917, Senator Orville Willett of Mineral County was diagnosed with leprosy. This program traces the story of Willett’s ten-year quarantine in Montana, his reliance on faith healing, the legislation his illness prompted, and his eventual removal to the federal leprosarium at Carville, Louisiana. Willett’s experience provides the framework to educate the audience about Hansen’s disease, its medical peculiarities, recent discoveries and treatments, and the social stigma it still carries today. Baumler’s storytelling skills bring Willett’s poignant isolation and the history of this little-understood disease to the modern audience. Join us each third Thursday for our High Noon Lecture Series Western Heritage Center, 2822 Montana Ave., Billings, MT 59101 Noon Free OCT. 20

Jared & The Mill, Edison
We are Jared & The Mill. All of us were born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and we still call it home today. When we first got started in the summer of 2011 we just wanted to play some music with our best buds, have a few shows, and have a good time. Jared and Michael had been buddies and playing music together since they were kids, and after they met up with another childhood duo, Josh Morin and Larry Gast III, after that they realized they needed a bass player, so along came Chuck Morris III. Some months later, Jared ran into Gabe Hall Rodrigues, a local accordion and keys player at a coffee shop. Gabe joined, and as it goes we were soon hammering along in the local scene, playing alongside the bands of new friends and old throughout Arizona. The wheels kept turning, and before we knew it we had over three years of touring under our boots; playing in the living rooms, dive bars, venues, theaters, music festivals, and even arenas of this big ol’ country of our’s alongside fellow upcoming bands, and with some of the biggest acts we had always looked up to. So here we are, with a new music to release and another busy year ahead. We’ve got some new tunes and a sound that has grown, and we’re eager as hell to share it with all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for listening. FRANKIE BALLARD
When Frankie Ballard was growing up in Battle Creek, Michigan, his father played him one classic album over and over again: Marty Robbins’ Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, featuring Robbins’ signature hit “El Paso.” Now Ballard, a quick-draw guitarist and rough-hewn singer, has cut his own metaphorical gunfighter album, decamping from Nashville to a gritty El Paso studio to record the follow-up to his 2014 breakout Sunshine & Whiskey. For Ballard, who scored three consecutive Number One singles off Sunshine & Whiskey — “Helluva Life,” the title track and “Young & Crazy” — it was imperative that he leave behind the safety of Nashville for the wilds of the Mexico border. Setting up shop at the famed Sonic Ranch, just south of El Paso in Tornillo, Texas, Ballard, producer Marshall Altman (Sunshine & Whiskey) and his band threw themselves headlong into the music, eating and sleeping at the studio. Their goal: make a bona fide album. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave N., Billings, MT 59101 8 p.m. $25 Advance/ $30 Day of Show OCT. 28

Purity Ring at the Babcock Theatre
After sixty-five fortnights, Purity Ring have returned with their supertight second album Another Eternity. The pair ventured home to the frozen industrial landscapes of their birthplace Edmonton, Alberta to document much of what was to become the album. For the first time, vocalist Megan James and producer Corin Roddick were able to create a record in the same room. Purity Ring’s first album Shrines was recorded separately in Montreal and Halifax, where Corin and Megan were respectively living at the time. Despite being a thousand kilometers apart and barely talking, Shrines was a cohesive, beguiling and wholly unique universe of what the band called ‘Future Pop’. At the center of the amniotic swirl of Shrines was an 11:11 Presents undeniable nucleus of crystalline pop which presciently Monday, October 24, 2016 suggested both indie Babcock Theatre and popular music General Admission/All Ages to come. Critics were psyched: ‘Best New Doors at 7 p.m. / Show at 8 p.m. Music’ from Pitchfork $25 in advance / $28 Day of show and praise from The Additional fees may apply New York Times, Rolling Stone, and NPR, among others. They quickly amassed a rabid fanbase, toured relentlessly and sold out shows worldwide. On Another Eternity, Purity Ring trade the gorgeously claustrophobic atmospheres of Shrines for wide-open, muscular vistas of sound and luminous, up-front vocals. Crafting a lyrical universe of “sweat and dreams” populated by seacastles, rattling spines, and weeping drawers, Megan James wields concrete imagery and metaphor with increasingly direct, startling resonance. Corin Roddick’s gifts for evocative melody remain intact, but his drum work and use of space have been completely reforged: immaculately built and focused in service of the song. “begin again” rouses Purity Ring’s brooding balladry into a skyreaching anthem while retaining its distinctive shape. “bodyache” is the kind of devastatingly infectious single that their previous work only gestured at. “stillness in woe” features a frozen, manipulated piano, dovetailing with Megan’s time suspending narrative. “repetition” finds surreal, love-lorn lyricism soaring over delicately woven synths. The emotional geography of Another Eternity is wider than ever: gloomy valleys and gleaming peaks in even measure. Though they are now working at a higher resolution, Purity Ring remain hands-on with every aspect of their project. As usual, the band produced and recorded Another Eternity entirely themselves. The pair worked to develop an innovative new live performance, and Megan designed the band’s onstage and video fashion. Another Eternity revels in its upfront melody, clarity, and confidence. With every step forward they take, Purity Ring actualize their vision while sounding utterly and undeniably like themselves.

Jared & The Mill. Playing for fifty people one night in a smokey bar, and the very next night opening up and playing for eighteen thousand in an arena was inspiring and eye opening to say the least. Opening up and sharing stages with the likes of Zac Brown Band, Barry Gibb, Boy & Bear, War on Drugs, Wildfeathers, Cake, Flogging Molly, The Killers, Allen Stone, and others while touring alongside bands just getting their start like us was a real honor. We certainly gained invaluable experience from all those shows and all those trials, but something else happened out there on the road for us, something we have a hard time explaining, but anyone who’s spent some time out there on the interstate understands; we became not just friends, but family. Being out there changed our lives, it changed how we thought about things, it changed how we wrote about things. Those miles molded our music and molded our souls and it made our bond even stronger. Life gives to you and it takes from you, and we have written about that give, and that take. We’ve written about getting older, about those friends and those loved ones and those things that never leave and about those that do; about those sweet things and those bitter things, and that struggle to keep the course as you try your best to carve yourself into what you hope is a good man. We have written about our desert home we so very often miss, and we’ve written about the stories of others we’ve heard along the way. Our music has been called, compared and regarded by a number of different names and genres, and we've been influenced and shaped by many different events and people, but more than anything, we'd like to think that some shred of the Southwest -- of our home -- can be found in the heart of our music. So here we are, with a new music to release and another busy year ahead. We’ve got some new tunes and a sound that has grown, and we’re eager as hell to share it with all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for listening. We’ll see you down the road, Jared & The Mill

MSUB presents, “The 1880 Crow Delegation to D.C.: Cultural Identity, Representation, and Legacy,” trains across the nation. “Medicine Crow drew pictures of many sights, including the U.S. Capitol Building, trains, steam boats and military gunboats on the Potomac River, and animals he saw,” Heidenreich said. “All these, as well as drawings of his military exploits, are part of the Barstow Ledger Drawings kept in the (MSUB) Library Special Collections.” Red Star, descendent of Medicine Crow, lives and works in Portland where this installation, with digital reproductions of Medicine Crow’s ledger drawings, appeared at the Portland Art Museum in late 2014. The re-installation of her project at MSUB marks the first time her project will be shown with Medicine Crow’s original drawings. The opportunity to show this body of work so near her home and with the original Medicine Crow drawings is very meaningful to Red Star. She hopes the series of presentations and conversations extend an effort to “humanize Medicine Crow.” “The single delegation portraits of Medicine Crow are the seed for the entire concept of the exhibition,” Red Star said. “I view this exhibition as my ultimate remake of Medicine Crow; a chance for me to tell the story behind the photographs. I want people to realize that the images of Medicine Crow are more than just a handsome Native man. The images represent a human being, a reservation era chief, the forming of the Crow Indian reservation, the loss of Crow lands, the changing of a people, and the resilience of a culture.” Other presentations include an overview of the history of the Crow Peace Delegation, a discussion on issues in the Medicine Crow drawings and Red Star’s project, a conversation on Crow identity and resilience through the arts, and a musical performance focusing on traditional Crow songs.

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES - Montana State University Billings’ Library and the Northcutt Steele Gallery will host a free series of presentations and community conversations in conjunction with an art exhibition at the gallery and an exhibition of historical materials. The series, “The 1880 Crow Delegation to D.C.: Cultural Identity, Representation, and Legacy,” responds to an exhibition by contemporary Crow/Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star, which will be on display in the Northcutt Steele Gallery October 20 through December 1. This project is being supported by Humanities Montana with additional support provided by Northcutt Steele Gallery, MSUB Library, MSUB Foundation, MSUB Department of Art, and MSUB American Indian Outreach. Curated and coordinated by MSUB art history faculty and gallery director, Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, the series features presentations by and conversations with local, regional, and national humanities scholars and artists exploring Native American art, experience, cultural identity, and representation. The show has been a labor of love for Gilbertson, who has been bringing the show’s many pieces together for two years. “I was looking for a contemporary Crow artist to feature and came across Wendy’s work. I reached out to her and was thrilled when she responded,” Gilbertson said. “When she was back for the Crow Fair two summers ago we discovered she was working with the Barstow (Ledger Drawings) and the Portland Art Museum to commission plush (toys) based off the drawings.” The ledger drawings will be discussed during Dr. C. Adrian Heidenreich’s lecture, which opens the series. He is an MSUB professor emeritus of Native American Studies and Anthropology. In 1880 six Crow leaders, Peelatchiwaaxpáash/Old Crow (Raven), Iichíilachkash/Long Elk, Alaxchiiaahush/Plenty Coups, Bia Eélisaash/ Large Stomach Woman (Pregnant Woman) aka Two Belly, Déaxitchish/Pretty Eagle, and Peelatchiwaaxpáash/Chief Medicine Crow (Raven) were selected as delegates to meet with government officials in Washington, D.C. The Crow leaders, accompanied by U.S. government agents and interpreters went from the Crow Agency, then located in Absarokee, Montana, riding stagecoaches and

Quilt Shops BACKDOOR QUILT SHOPPE Famous for its “quilting bee” atmosphere. That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were
killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
