Ryniker-Morrison Gallery to host ‘All Student Art Show’ Billings, October 28, 2016 – Rocky Mountain College’s RynikerMorrison Art Gallery will host the annual “All Student Art Show” in Tech Hall on the RMC campus from November 10 – December 1, 2016. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2016, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The exhibit is free and the public is cordially invited to attend. Sally McIntosh, Director of the Ryniker-Morrison Art Gallery, explained that students enrolled in Art History, Drawing, Painting, Digital Arts, Digital Photography, Digital Nature Photography, Metalsmithing and Jewelry, will submit current work

to a jury for acceptance. The jurors will consider critical thinking, craftsmanship, composition, aesthetics, and finishing techniques in their student selections. They will also choose 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall winners who will be announced at the opening reception. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on weekends and school holidays. For more information, contact Sally McIntosh at sally.mcintosh@ rocky.edu.

Animals “Unleashed” at the Yellowstone Art Museum Visual depictions of “critters” will run amok in the galleries of the Yellowstone Art Museum in two related exhibitions: Unleashed: Critters from the Permanent Collection and Ephemerality, recent works by Billings, Montana, artist Louis Habeck. Triceratops heads and reclining horses, baboons and lions, dogs and cats, and a wide range of other animals from the museum’s collection both of the wild and domesticated sort will likely lead to sometimes ironic and often sublime relationships that exist between subject matter and materials. Between 1820 and 1849 artist Edward Hicks painted over 100 versions of the Peaceable Kingdom, which was inspired by chapter 11 of Isaiah "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together...” In an election year when the lessons from this scripture seems so untenable, the Yellowstone Art Museum offers up amusing and serious examples that reference the Biblical text, while demonstrating the long-lived relationships artists have with animal subjects. Horses will reside near wild cats, and house nemeses dogs and cats will grace the galleries side-by-side to remind us of our love of animals and of the possibility of tolerance and peace that is attainable in the real world as envisioned by Hicks. Both exhibitions take place on the museum’s second floor in the Montana Gallery and adjacent corridor. The exhibitions opened to the public Friday, October 28th. A public reception took place Thursday, November 3rd. These offerings should prove to be lively and popular given the attraction to animals demonstrated in enumerable social media

memes and animal exhibitions slated around the country. Many of the selected exhibition objects have rarely if ever been seen publicly and never in this context. Education programming will focus on the manner in which individual works were created and on notions about sharing and caring in the natural and “manmade” worlds. The exhibition will include numerous objects by locally, regionally, and nationally known artists such as Will Barnet, Deborah Butterfield, Gennie DeWeese, and Edith Freeman to name but a few. Related offerings include an animal illustration workshop led by Maria Isabel Bonilla Uribe on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Sign up for this workshop by going online to www.artmuseum.org/ education/adult-education or by contacting the museum front desk. An artist’s talk Buford by Jerry Cornelia by Louis Habeck will take place on November 17, 2016, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Louis is a recent recipient of the Montana Arts Council’s Artist Innovation Award, which is made possible by the Montana Arts Council, an agency of state government, through funding from the National endowment for the Arts. Take part also in a joint animal scavenger hunt between the Yellowstone Art Museum and ZooMontana. During the Unleashed exhibition, pick up the scavenger hunt list at either location to start participating and compete for prizes. The museum is a barrier-free facility and free parking is available. Members are admitted free, and the general public can visit for a nominal admission fee. For more information, visit the museum’s website www.artmuseum.org.

Learn and Taste Craft Beer Series Sign up now for MSUB Extended Campus Learn and Taste Craft Beer Series! MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Home to several microbreweries and more than 40 bars, Billings was recently named the fourth best city for Beer drinkers by SmartAsset.com. Those of us who live here already know craft beer professionals and amateurs take the craft of beer brewing seriously and an upcoming four-part “Learn and Taste” series presented by Montana State University Billings Extended Campus beginning November 10 will have you even more prepared to enjoy Billings’ favorite beverage. The series, running through March, will cover topics including developing your palate and deductive skills to identify flavors in beer, as well as how to detect the faults in brewing and their causes, exploring specialty beers influenced by wood, and experiencing the “mouthpuckering glory of tart and funky beers,” soured with non-traditional yeasts and even bacteria. Paul Pope, MSUB assistant professor and vice president of the Rimrock Brewers

Guild – a Billings based home brewing club – said the first “beer detective” course, taught by Master Brewer Mike Ulrich of Carter’s Brewing, will include blind tastings. Ulrich will be passing along knowledge he recently picked up at a sensory analysis he completed at the Siebel Institute of Brewing Technology in Chicago, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious brewing schools in the United States. “This is an opportunity to develop sensory analysis through taste and smell and sample great beers and even get to try identify who made it,” Pope said. “The second course will be similar but focused on finding faults. It’s going to be really horrible beer.” Even though students will be drinking beer brewed with some mistakes the class will provide an opportunity, “for people to become better brewers or consumers” said Pope. “Just because you’re being served a craft beer doesn’t mean it’s any good,” Pope said.

The second set of classes will also focus on taste. In February, students will learn about how specialty beers are being influenced by wood to add unique depth and taste. The final class in March will explore wild and sour beers brewed with wild yeast or soured with bacteria. The series will be taught by faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences in conjunction with regional brew masters from Carter’s Brewing and UberBrew of Billings, as well as Neptune’s Brewery based in Livingston. Other sponsors include Rimrock Brewers Guild. The classes run from 6p.m. to 8p.m. on Thursday evenings and are $45 each or $150 for the complete series. Classes include six to eight tastes and an MSUB tasting glass. Courses held on Nov 10, Dec. 8, Feb. 9, and March 19. Each class is $45, or $150 for the series. Register online or at the door. Must be 21 or older to enroll.

Remember the Forgotten Military Veterans of World War II By Chad Storlieauthor of two books: (1) Combat Leader to Corporate Leader and (2) Battlefield to Business Success. World War II was a sacrifice of extraordinary measures. Literally overnight, the country went from peace to war; from the Great Depression to an industrial powerhouse providing the tanks, planes, and warships that would deliver the peace; and transforming men and women from civilians to the defenders of the nation. The transformation from peace to war and back to peace cost the United States an enormous toll. When peace returned in 1945, the US military stood at just over 12,000,000 soldiers with over 1,000,000 dead and wounded. The sacrifice of the military veterans of World War II was and remains one of the greatest stories of transformation, innovation, discipline, courage, valor, and battlefield endurance that our country has ever seen. This Veteran's Day, the remaining military veterans of World War II are disappearing from our parades and gatherings. They should not and must not ever fade from our memories, our gratefulness, and our respect. A group that often fails to be fully recognized for their roles and sacrifices as military service members during World War II is the role that women and ethnic minorities played in the success of the military victories. In the era before the war, women and ethnic minorities were usually "second" class citizens, often times paid lower wages, and did not share equally in access to all that the United States had to offer its citizens. However, when World War

II arrived on America's shores, these citizens rose to offer valor, courage, bravery, and battlefield heroics that was beyond what their country had given them. African American Military Veterans. The Tuskegee Airmen, a group of Fighter, Bomber, and Reconnaissance pilots that fought in the skies of Europe and offered critical defense to the US strategic bomber forces is one of the most remembered and respected stories of African Americans during World War II. However, the Tuskegee Airmen are just the beginning of the story. The US Army's "Red Ball" Express, a critical logistical unit in Europe, provided General Patton's tanks the food, fuel, and ammunition that helped defeat the ferocious Nazi German attack known as the Battle of The Bulge in December 1944. The 761st Tank Battalion, the Black Panthers, was an African American Tank battalion in World War II. In the Navy, the African American crew of the Mason helped move and defend critical supplies from the United States to England. On the West Coast, African Americans in Navy Logistics units worked under extraordinarily dangerous conditions to load ships of fuel and ammunition to support the "island hopping" campaigns to defeat Japan in the Pacific. Women Military Veterans. While not officially recognized as uniformed members of the Armed Forces until years after World War II, women played a role in logistics, nursing, Continues on page 15....

SHOOK TWINS, RABBIT WILDE

Born and raised in Sandpoint Idaho, Shook Twins are an Indie folk-pop band hailing from Portland, Oregon. Identical twins, Katelyn and Laurie Shook, and Niko Daoussis form the band’s core. Central to Shook Twins’ sound is their wide range of instrumentation: banjo, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, mandolin, electronic drums, face drum (beatbox), glockenspiel, ukulele, banjo-head drumming and their signature Golden Egg. Beautiful twin harmonies, layered upon acoustic and electric instrumentation, coupled with Laurie’s inventive use of percussive and ambient vocal loops, and Katelyn’s repurposed telephone microphone, set their sound apart, creating a unique and eccentric blend of folk, roots, groove and soul. Their eclectic style fluctuates from song to song; drawing from their life experience they write about being potters’ daughters, the sway of the subconscious, imagined superpowers and a chicken friend named ‘Rose.’ Shook Twins also pull out unexpected covers on classic hits as well as their friends’ songs, and get-down to rhythm driven dance numbers with their 90’s hits female supergroup, Sideboob (w/ Mimi Naja of Fruition, Allie Kral of Yonder Mountain Stringband and Kat Fountain). Katelyn and Laurie are the main songwriters, but they also back up their band member Niko Daoussis (Niko Slice), adding his uniquely compelling songs to the mix. Shook Twins have shared the stage with artists including: Ryan Adams,Gregory Alan Isakov, Greensky Bluegrass, Mason Jennings,

Blitzen Trapper, Railroad Earth, Keller Williams, David Grisman, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Sarah Jarosz, Laura Veirs, The Fruit Bats, Jonatha Brooke, JJ Grey and MoFro, The Indigo Girls, Crooked Still, Jason Webley, The BoDeans, Elephant Revival and more. Satsang, Reid Perry

Satsang is a Conscious Music Collective blending world conscious lyrics with a unique blend of Roots Music, Folk, Indie Rock, and HipHop. Satsang seems to have something for every musical palate. The lyrics come from and are rooted in change, growth, awareness, and imperfection, and are used as a mission statement for reflection, growth, and activation. Touching on everything from the bliss of traveling and the growing pains of change: to societal ills and civil rights. The live show is everything that the band name suggests: A gathering of people to assimilate and share their truths. The rhythms and energy put forth by the band keep everyone on their feet, and the lyrics leave them craving active and immediate change. Satsang has toured all over the country and has shared the stage with the likes of Steel Pulse, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Trevor Hall, Wookiefoot, Mike Love, and many more. “It still amazes me how far they have come in such a short period of time. With a very dedicated fan base and a lot of respect in the music community amongst other artists, Satsang is a band to watch closely. “ - GratefulWeb Pub Station (2502 First Avenue North, Billings, MT 59101) General Admission/All Ages Doors at 7p.m./Show at 8p.m. $10 Advance/Day of Show NOV. 26

Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings

Musical Continuity and Supervision by David Snyder At first Francis, Jinx, Smudge and Sparky aren’t even sure why they’ve returned to Earth for another posthumous performance, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like their three minute and eleven second version of the Ed Sullivan Show. This truly “heavensent” holiday treat will lift audiences’ spirits and fill them with nostalgia for a bygone era of classic music in perfect harmony. Location: Billings Studio Theatre, 1500 Rimrock Rd., Billings, MT 59102 Show Times: Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 7:30 p.m. (Doors Open At 7 p.m.) Saturday & Sunday Matinees: 2 p.m. (Doors Open At 1:30 p.m.)

Remember the Forgotten Continues from page 15....

administration, and flight that made them a vital and central effort of the US military effort to win. Women flew aircraft from factories and bases in the United States to forward staging areas, provided critical care as nurses and other hospital and medical care staff, and served as a critical backbone of administrative and logistical personnel that provided the support to organize and resource the war effort from the United States into combat areas of Europe and the Pacific. The US Navy’s Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES), the Coast Guard Women’s Reserves (SPARS), the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), and the Women's Army Corps (WAC) plus countless other uniformed women were essential to the war's success. Asian American Military Veterans. The Japanese Nisei, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (motto: "Go For Broke"), was one of the more famous units of World War II and these Japanese American soldiers became one of the most decorated military units in World War II due to their combat performance. Asian American also provided critical knowledge of Japanese and other Asian languages for use in intelligence activities to support the war effort. The people of the Philippines, then part of an American Protectorate, were essential in operating guerilla forces behind Japanese lines, helping rescue downed American aircrews, and played a major role in helping rescue American Prisoners of War (POW) toward the last stages of World War II. Native American Military Veterans. Military history buffs know about the Navajo "Code Talkers" of the US Marine Corps. The Navajo Indians were trained by the US Marines to transmit critical battlefield information as well as direct artillery fire and air strikes using their native Navajo Indian language. While the Japanese had the ability to intercept and confuse US Marines speaking English, they had no idea what the Navajo language even was. The success of the Navajo Code Talkers helped the US Marines provide effective artillery support for its missions to seize critical islands across the Pacific. The US Army

in the Pacific also had a program that used Native Americans to speak their own language to ensure rapid, effective, and secure communication. Hispanic American Military Veterans. Hispanic Americans did not serve in segregated military units like African Americans or Asian Americans during World War II. They were largely spread across the military forces of the United States, but still found a way to serve with distinction. The 158th Infantry, the Bushmasters, was a US Army Infantry unit that was based in Arizona composed primarily of Hispanic American's. They fought an intense, heroic, and ultimately successful campaign across the Philippines in April of 1945 against the Japanese. LGBT Military Veterans. Today, all qualified military personnel can serve regardless of their sexual orientation. One of the great historical sadness of World War II military history is that we know and understand only a miniscule amount of the contributions of this vital group of America's, Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered (LGBT) military veterans. This group either served in silence or was not allowed to enter military service due to laws and military regulations at the time. Dr. Alan Turing, a Mathematician in England and who was Gay, was the leader of a non-traditional intelligence team of code breakers that succeed in cracking the Nazi German Enigma code under his leadership. On Veteran's Day, we honor, remember, and respect the courage, sacrifice, valor, and integrity of this small group of American's that has given and continues to give so much to the defense of our nation. We must remember that the courage, sacrifice, heroics, and valor of all American's is what we remember, respect, and cherish each Veteran's Day.

Steep Ravine & The Railsplitters Sunday, November 13, 2016

Pub Station (2502 First Avenue North, Billings) Doors at 7 P.M. / Show at 8 P.M. $10 Advance/$12 Day of Show Additional fees may apply.

Steep Ravine

Fusing elements of folk, jazz, bluegrass, and rock n roll, Steep Ravine continues to enthrall audiences with their soulful California sound. Songwriter Simon Linsteadt (guitar, lead vocals) and Jan Purat (violin, vocals) began playing music together in high school in Northern California, later moving on to study music at UC Santa Cruz and the California Jazz Conservatory. They met bassist Alex Bice (bass, vocals) through jam sessions in Santa Cruz. Percussionist Jeff Wilson, a close musical compadre, is the band’s most recent addition. Steep Ravine has toured extensively throughout the country and has released two fulllength records of original music. Following their humble beginnings playing at a Hawaiian barbecue spot in Santa Cruz and busking in the BART Metro Stations of San Francisco, Steep Ravine quickly gained a following in the Bay Area and throughout the west. After the release of their debut record TRAMPIN’ ON, the band went on several national tours, including notable performances at High Sierra Music Festival, Four Corners Folk Festival, Pagosa Folk n’ Bluegrass, Outside Lands, and Strawberry Music Festival. In 2015, Steep Ravine released their second record THE PEDESTRIAN, diving deeper into new musical terrain.

The Railsplitters

boundaries with their innovative sound. The Railsplitters’ secret weapon is two-fold: first, the innovative imagination of banjo player Dusty Rider’s songwriting, who writes with the full band in mind, imagining an entire song in his head before it’s even heard it out loud. Second, the powerfully distinct vocals of Lauren Stovall whose voice is as clean as Emmylou, as cutting as Allison Krauss, and carrying some of the attitude of Dolly herself. Lauren’s vocal lines fill The Railsplitters’ sound with something distinct and undeniable. In addition, part of The Railsplitters’ new color is brought on by the band’s newest member, Joe D’Esposito, whose New Englandinfluenced fiddling adds new directions to the band’s sound. With masterfully executed mandolin and banjo by Peter Sharpe and Dusty Rider, and well supported by upright bassist Leslie Ziegler’s innovative style, The Faster It Goes testifies to The Railsplitters’ multipolar and collaborative songwriting, giving voice to the impressive talents of its members and a cohesive character to the sound. From the first track, “Tilt-A-Whirl,” it’s clear the The Faster It Goes is exploring modern speeds: “My mind is like an old Tilt-A-Whirl, it never seems to stop, not even for this girl.” With the foot-stomping drive of a reworked traditional tune like, “Salt Salt Sea,” or the complex harmony and aggressive rhythms in “It’s A Little Late,” The Railsplitters are trying to keep up with life, the faster, and faster it goes. While these songs pack an edge and highlight the band’s progression into more popinfluenced numbers, The Railsplitters know that life isn’t only lived in the fast lane, taking a few moments to unwind with earthy tracks like “The Estuary,” which pays tribute to their musical mountain roots, and the album’s hidden track, “Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes.” Though they operate with the instrumentation of a bluegrass band, The Railsplitters are making music totally unlimited by tradition. This is music for the open road, the open dance floor, and open ears--music of the American West, made for all.

Steep Ravine

Fresh off the success of their first album, and taking first place in Rockygrass’ Best New Band Competition, Colorado natives, The Railsplitters got busy touring the US, meeting wider audiences, and of course, spending hours in the tour van! As you can imagine from five members traveling across the United States, the musical array pouring out of the van onto the open highway was wildly eclectic, crossing over genre and time. From boundary breaking trip hop and electronica groups like Gorillaz and Thievery Corporation, to more direct influences like The Infamous Stringdusters and Lake Street Dive, the musical potpourri heard in their time on the road eventually began to seep into the band’s own music. With their new album, The Faster It Goes, they’re using these new sounds to break the bonds of bluegrass and unleash tradition. Lauren Stovall and the rest of the ‘Splitters suggest that using your roots to evolve is really at the heart of the genre, not unlike Bill Monroe, who himself was an innovator. With their finger on the pulse, The Railsplitters are pushing the genre forward with an adventurous spirit, carrying in the tradition of breaking The Railsplitters

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center. Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
