Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic and DJ Zone, and Homeboy Sandman

Monday, December 12, 2016

Pub Station (2502 First Avenue North) Doors at 7PM/Show at 8PM $20 in advance/Day of show Additional fees may apply

11:11 Presents Aesop Rock Aesop Rock has started skateboarding again. Nearly every day, he hits up the skate park, working to get his skills back up. Skating and drawing (which he’s been doing more of, too) were his big passions before his hobby of making rap songs turned into a paying gig that turned into an accidental, 20-year long career, taking him from making beats in his bedroom to playing for crowds thousands deep. Going back to them just shy of 40-years old isn’t some kind of regressive midlife crisis move, though. It’s more like a way to help process everything that’s happened in his life over the past couple decades, and maybe to figure out the person he’s become. That’s also what he’s trying to do with his seventh solo album, The Impossible Kid. Rap’s supposed to be a young man’s game, but Aesop’s only been improving as he’s gotten closer to middle age. He’s tackling different subject matter, going deep on topics like depression, his sometimes rocky relationships with his family, and the turbulent handful of years that culminated in Aesop leaving his adopted home of San Francisco to live in a barn out in the woods, where he recorded the foundations of The Impossible Kid. Those years have been productive, though. Since his last solo album, 2012’s Skelethon, Aesop has released collaborative albums with Kimya Dawson (The Uncluded’s Hokey Fright in 2013), with Rob Sonic (Hail Mary Mallon’s Bestiary in 2014, which was tracked in the same barn in the woods), and with Homeboy Sandman (LICE’s self-titled EP in 2015). He’s also been actively crafting beats. Recent projects include producing the 32+ minute instrumental mix, The Blob, working together

with Nike to provide the music for a series of their skateboarding videos, and producing the soundtrack for the upcoming film Bushwick, starring Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow. Now comes The Impossible Kid, which finds Aesop still finding new ways to improve on the skills that have made him one of the kings of indie hip-hop. Part of the new creative process he brought to it includes a willingness to embrace the funny side that he kept quiet, when being taken as a serious lyricist was more of a priority. Combined with another newfound willingness to open up about his personal life, the bits of humor spiked throughout the album create a potent emotional cocktail. “Lotta Years” uses two short vignettes to meditate on outgrowing your corner of the culture while chuckling admiringly over the audacity of youth. “Blood Sandwich” recalls a couple of very weird scenes from his childhood starring his two brothers, told with the same combination of surreal comedy and genuine tenderness as a George Saunders story. At the same time, this is the most purely Aesop Rock record of his career. Like Skelethon, Aesop exercised complete creative control over the whole thing, from the production (which he handled himself, with instrumental help from Philly’s Grimace Foundation) to conceptualizing the cover art by his friend Alex Pardee. As you might have guessed, The Impossible Kid is a reference to Aesop himself, a person who’s spent his life doing things that seemed unthinkable before he just went and did them, blazing a visionary trail all his own. Two decades in, he’s still out there

(Hed)p.e.

The quest to uncover the truth has given California-based hardcore pioneers (Hed)p.e. new life. While the band has weathered the stormy waters of the music business for over a decade and enjoyed a slew of successful albums, it’s their quest for answers that has given them purpose. I believe (Hed)p.e’s longevity is due to the fact that our records are more than just music,” concludes Jahred. “Some of the greatest artists have used their music for social commentary. Bands like Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, Sex Pistols, and The Clash, have all empowered their fans to rise up to fight injustice. Since we’ve got involved with The Truth Movement, I’ve heard from thousands of fans who are excited that we’re using our music to explore things other than girl and boy problems. The best bands use their music for more than dancing and getting wasted.” (Hed)p.e. has their sights firmly set on the New World Order and they are using their brand of hardcore to bring it down.

Barefoot in the Park

Montana Repertory Theatre takes pride in producing plays from the great American canon -- stories that reveal the American character and hold a mirror to our mutual longings, dreams, defeats, and victories. In this vein, Montana Rep has produced the works of Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Wendy Wasserstein, and Harper Lee, among others. Over the years Montana Rep has presented four plays by America’s master of comedy, Neil Simon: The Sunshine Boys, Broadway Bound, Biloxi Blues, and Lost in Yonkers, all with great success. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that for their fiftieth anniversary season they once again turn to Mr. Simon and produce the play that put him on the map over fifty years ago: Barefoot in the Park. This hilarious, poignant story features Corie and Paul Bratter, a newlywed couple. For their first home, they live in an apartment on the top floor of a walk-up brownstone in New York City. During the course of four days, the couple learns to live together while facing the usual daily ups-and-downs. The Sleeping Beauty

The Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipa’s career, is often considered the finest achievement of Classical ballet. It is a grandiose, refined blending of traditional mime, expressive pas d’action and spectacular divertissements in a lavish theatrical setting. Tchaikovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perrault’s well-known fairy tale. A baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor, lent itself perfectly to the full evening ballet that was Petipa’s pride. The band found mainstream success with their Interscope debut, Meantime, which debuted at number 68 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hits “Unsung” and “In the Meantime.” In 1994, Helmet explored new sonic territories with the fan favorite and critically acclaimed Betty, which incorporated elements of jazz and blues into their “thinking man’s metal.” Following an additional album, Helmet broke up in 1998, while Hamilton explored other projects, including various collaborations and film scores. In 2004, Hamilton reformed Helmet with a new lineup, releasing the album Size Matters that same year. In 2006, they released Monochrome on Warcone records and then released

Friday, December 9 their most recent album, Seeing Eye Dog, via Work Song in 2010. Since the 2004 revival, Helmet has toured extensively all over the world. In 2012, they toured Europe in light of the 20th anniversary of Meantime and, most recently, embarked on a similar tour for the 20th anniversary of Betty.

MSUB’s Extended Campus offers selection of youth winter camps Looking for a different and exciting holiday present for the youth in your life? Or looking for ways to engage them over the winter school break? Cure winter-break boredom by signing them up for a fun and educational Winter Program, sponsored by Montana State University Billings Extended Campus. Extended Campus is offering a variety of youth winter camps geared for fourth through ninth-graders. The first set of winter youth camps is a trio of camps geared around award-winning robots. Children can take one, two, or all three of the camps during the week; a discounted rate of $380 applies if all three camps are taken. The cost for each camp includes instruction and the robot, so children can continue learning and playing at home! All of the robotics camps are taught by Darla Williams, K-12 extended studies educator and take place at the College of Education on the University Campus. For the first day-long camp on Dec. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (cost of $115), campers will be introduced to Ozobot. This robot teaches children the basics of coding in a fun and interactive way. An Ozobot has two “skins” to change appearance and markers to create challenging obstacle courses. The Meet Edison day-long camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 and costs $100. The Edison features a free, online programmable software that students will use to learn how to program their robot on their own. This robot can be changed up with LEGO bricks, so kids can keep the fun and learning going at home for hours and hours! The final camp, (a two-day camp), is the Arduino Gamer Camp, $205, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 and 30th. Here, students will receive the Arduino Gamer Kit, a basic circuit board that can be programmed to play games like Tetris and Snake! Attendees should be sure to bring a snack, lunch and water bottle for these day-long camps.

To register for one or all three camps, go online. Remember, sign up for all three camps and save $40! The second option is the I THINK Raspberry Pi Intermediate Camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., December 27December 29, at City College room TECH B056. The cost of this camp is $165 and picks up where the Raspberry Pi Beginner camp left off last summer. Youth interested in this camp must have either taken the Beginner camp in 2015 or 2016 or get permission from the instructor. Instructing this exciting camp is Bruce Brumley, computer systems technology instructor at City College. The camp will focus on delving into more programming, both traditional and using SCRATCH, as well as also using the device as an external controller with electronic automation and to build and control electronic projects and motor controls. Attendees of this camp should note that equipment is NOT provided and students will need to bring their Raspberry Pi from the Beginning camp, all cables/materials, headphones, snack, water bottle and lunch. You can register online for this camp..

The Billings Symphony’s Holiday Tour of Homes The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale (BSO&C) celebrates the spirit of the holidays with the 12th annual Holiday Tour of Homes on Saturday, December 10, 2016 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Local families open their beautifully decorated homes for this self-guided tour. The tour features five festively decorated homes. Most stops will feature music by Billings Symphony musicians. Symphony Holiday Tea will be served at Bistecca at the Granary from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale. Billings Symphony Board members Cheryl Bentley and Past President, Robin Hanel, chair the Holiday Tour of Homes with help from BSO&C President John Stewart. “Please join the Billings Symphony and Chorale’s Holiday Tour of Homes. Come see some of Billings’ most beautiful homes at their holiday best. This is not only a festive prelude to your Christmas season, but is a great way to support symphonic music for southeast Montana.” Board President John Stewart

Featured Homes on the Tour this year are: Olson / Jones Home: 3134 Lloyd Mangrum Lane

This architect-designed custom-built, mid-century home has stunning views of Yellowstone Country Club and the western Rimrocks. Originally created by architect Wayne Gusafston for Maury and Zella Nemer, it was acquired in 2003 by architect Ed Jones and interior stylist Merry Lee Olson, who recreated it with respect for its original design while infusing a more contemporary flair that reflects the California life style the couple enjoyed before returning to Montana. Warm, light filled interiors, 2 fireplaces, and world artifacts create a quiet retreat.

Peete Home: 2711 S. Gregory Drive

This beautiful 1966 Colonial style home, nestled in the Cameron Park area off Rimrock Road is sure to impress and brighten your holiday spirits. The Peete’s’ love for the holidays shows in every ornament and every decoration. Longtime friends of the Billings Symphony, the Peete’s are excited to have you over for the holidays.

Klein Home: 1836 Mulberry Drive

Built in 1971, this alluring home is set directly below the Rims, surrounded by mature trees and impeccable landscaping. Carrie Klein is excited to invite you into her home. Klein is one of Billings’

top interior designers and has worked on many Holiday Tour of Homes. Come in and share her love of the holidays and design. This home boasts three different themes that run throughout the house.

Edgerton / Kosovich Home: 1140 N. 32nd Street

The Belle of the Ball, this breathtaking 1930 Cotswold Tudor home is located on the back side of Pioneer Park. The Edgerton’s have remodeled this home, keeping its lush history in tact, and are ready to show off its holiday dazzle. This home will be filled with six different themes to match the room it’s in. Don’t miss the family heirloom photo tree.

Nook Home: 2516 Normal Avenue

The Montana State University Billings Chancellor House will be adorned with two intertwining themes in decor this year. Jolly Ole St. Nicholas will be showcased throughout with Santas a plenty. The “crème de la crème” will be the iconic display of Santa in the Nook’s Coca Cola tree. You won’t be able to take your eyes off this one and won’t want to miss this home nor this tree!

Bistecca at the Granary: 1500 Poly Drive

Built in 1935, the building was originally the milling department for Billings Polytechnic Institute, now Rocky Mountain College. It came from Carter County, once known as the Ekalaka Flour Mill. It was torn down, shipped and rebuilt in its current location. The Granary opened up as a restaurant in 1976, changed to Bistecca at the Granary in 2014, and has maintained its original architecture and charm. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 the day of the Tour. Tickets may be purchased at the Billings Symphony Box Office, 2721 2nd Ave. N. Suite 350, by calling 406-252-3610 or online at billingssymphony. org. They are also available at all three Gainan’s Flower and Garden Centers in Billings, The Base Camp, First Montana Title, Neecee’s, Wetzel’s Quality Cleaners, and Berkshire Hathaway Home Services /Floberg Real Estate. The twelfth annual Holiday Tour of Homes is generously sponsored by: Berkshire Hathaway Home Services/Floberg Real Estate, Wetzel’s Quality Cleaners, First Montana Title, First Interstate Bank, Gainan’s Flower and Garden Center, Phillips 66 Billings Refinery, Billings Hardware, and First Federal Bank. The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale’s 2016-2017 season is presented by The Oakland Companies.

22 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center. Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
