The Veer Union
2016 marked the 10 year span between The Veer Unions’ first album “Time To Break The Spell” released in 2006 and their brand NEW upcoming release appropriately titled “DECADE” slated to be released on January 29, 2016. This is the first full length album release since their 2012 release “Divide The Blackened Sky”. This marks 10 years of THE VEER UNION and their struggles of overcoming adversity. Crispin began his journey singing, songwriting and producing songs for “The Veer Union” as a solo project in 2001, at this time the project was called “Everything After”. Crispin wrote and produced over 15 demos in 2001 before the first incarnation of the band which later would come to be known as “The Veer Union.” Two of those demos from 2001 “Watch You Lose” & “Make Believe” got Tommy Lees’ attention from Motley Crue and in 2005 were used on Tommy Lee’s solo record “TommyLand.” Crispin felt that the new album DECADE seemed like the perfect opportunity to take these two songs along with 3 other songs which were written before the first incarnation of The Veer Union 10 years ago, and bring them back to life. 5 BRAND NEW songs were also written for this new album bridging the span of over a DECADE proving that THE VEER UNION can stand the test of time.

Crispin has struggled with depression over the years. Despite his internal battle he continues to persevere through life and his musical journey, which is what the leadoff single lyrically signifies titled, “Defying Gravity.” THE VEER UNION is excited about releasing the NEW album “DECADE” which is self produced by Crispin. It has taken “The Veer Union” 4 years to rebuild and form a NEW UNION with NEW members Ryan Ramsdell on Rhythm Guitars, Dan Sittler on Lead Guitar/Vocal Harmonies, Touring Drummer Tyler Reimer and Amal Wijayanayake on Bass Guitar/ Scream Vocals. The Veer Union is now ready to take 2016 by storm with the help of their new labels Pavement Entertainment and Rock Shop Entertainment and longtime friend and manager Erik Baker from Streetsmart Management. Look for The Veer Unions NEW LP “Decade” that released in January 2016.

Business Lessons From The Battle of The Bulge By Chad Storlie December 2016 will mark the 72nd commemoration of the Battle of The Bulge. The Battle of the Bulge was a ferocious and devastating attack by the Nazi Germans on primarily American troops that began on December 16, 1944 across Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. The battle was a desperate attempt by the Germans to rapidly and decisively turn the Allied advance into a retreat to the Atlantic. While unsuccessful, the surprising Nazi German offensive and the uncoordinated initial Allied response offers several critical business lessons during this time of unprecedented political change and tepid economic growth. In late 1944, the Nazi German’s were in full retreat in Eastern Europe against the advancing Soviet Union (Russia) and the Allies (United States, United Kingdom, and Canada) in the West. The Nazi strategic answer to this “vise” of attacks was an unexpected, but sharp and powerful attack in the West to drive the Allies back to the D-Day invasion beaches so the Nazi’s could turn their armies on the Soviet Union. The results of these attacks were a fleeting success in the West that lasted a few weeks, not months as the Nazi’s hoped, and did nothing to forestall the eventual success of the Allies and the Soviet Union By May of 1945. Still, the initial Nazi tactical success in this offensive contains elements of critical learnings that can be directly applied to today’s business environment. Battle of the Bulge Business Lesson #1 – The Best Intelligence Comes From the Front. The predominant intelligence message of the American higher headquarters in early December 1944 was that the Nazi Germans were in static defensive positions and were expected to be that way for months. Contrary to the opinion of generals and headquarters staffs, frontline combat units heard from local people that German units were preparing for an attack. American units also captured several junior ranking German soldiers who also told of preparations for a major attack. No one in the higher American headquarters accepted and put together the consistent story that the Germans were preparing for a major attack. The business lesson is executive teams must constantly be open to listening and hearing things that may go against their own beliefs and experiences. Listening to the front lines and then assembling those messages into a consistent story often times leads to the best competitive insight.
Battle of the Bulge Business Lesson #2 – Assume The Competition Will Take The Most Dangerous Course. Higher American commander’s dismissed the local ground intelligence that pointed to a different conclusion on the Nazi German actions than what they thought likely. American commander has also dismissed the combat skills, tactics, strategy, and morale of the German forces. “How can the German’s fight back,” American Commander’s asked, “when they have been in full retreat?” The business lesson is that you must never underestimate the skills, passion, and commitment of your competition. Indeed, the safe approach to the competition is to expect them to do what will become the most damaging to your position. In this way, planning and expecting your competition to take the most dangerous path will ensure that you anticipate and plan how to defeat the competition at their most dangerous. Competitors are planning just like you. When you plan for the competition to be at their best, you will rarely be surprised. Battle of the Bulge Business Lesson #3 – Logistics, Not Tactics, Is The Key To Success. Logistics drives military success in battle. For both the Nazi Germans and the Allies, it was the logistics of fuel, ammunition, spare parts, food, water, and medical supplies that ultimately decided that military actions on the battlefield. The German attackers quickly lost their military advantage when the weather cleared to allow for Allied attacks on the vulnerable German logistical supplies. For the Allies, the African-American logistical unit, the Red Ball Express, played a key role to supply Patton’s counter attacking tank units with fuel and ammunition – the two most vital military supplies. Ultimately, the Allies were able to overpower the Germans with logistics and unequaled combat power from both the ground and the air to defeat the German attack. The business lesson is that you can have great products and great strategy, but those need to be fully supported with quality manufacturing, great customer service, and the ability to fix and repair critical customer issues. Battle of the Bulge Business Lesson #4 – Leadership Humor & Humility In The Face of Adversity Wins Morale. In the early days after the devastating destruction and retreat following the German surprise attack, grim faced Allied commanders met to discuss the situation and next steps. Patton, alone among the senior commanders,
expressed his passion and aggressive leadership that they should aggressively attack, not just defend. After American forces in Bastogne were surrounded and cut off by the Germans, they requested the American Commander’s surrender. The American Commander responded with, “Nuts!” which both confused and infuriated the German attackers. Throughout the Battle, American leaders from Sergeants to Generals used combinations of humor, humility, initiative, bravery, and leadership by example to calm, inspire, and direct their forces from determined defense to a determined counterattack and eventual victory. The business lesson is that humor and humility are incredible tools of leadership to inspire teams when morale is low and the situation dire. Indeed, the worse the business situation, the greater importance of leadership humor and humility. Battle of the Bulge Business Lesson #5 – Superior Technology With Inferior Strategy Will Not Carry The Day. When the Nazi Germans attacked they revealed some of their latest weapons. They possessed new tanks, new infantry weapons, and new tactics to make tanks and infantry attack faster. Even with these great new weapons, they were unable to create a victory in the battle even though they had initial success because their overall concept was deeply flawed and lacked sufficient logistical support. The business lesson is that even if you have one great product, but your company strategy does not reflect the needs of customers, the strength of your competition, then it is unlikely to succeed in the marketplace. Understanding that great intelligence comes from those closest to the battle, assuming your competitor can chose a dangerous course of action, knowing that supporting your product is as importance as designing it, realizing the vital importance of humble leadership, and knowing superior technology alone is unlikely to win the day are the critical business lessons from the Battle of the Bulge. Remembering the sacrifice of the soldiers who turned around a desperate battlefield situation and won during a cold and snowy period in late 1944 is a great way to remember the military veterans of World War II. A better way to remember is to learn the lessons of the Battle of the Bulge and apply those lessons to your business.

MSUB’s Extended Campus offers selection of youth winter camps Looking for a different and exciting holiday present for the youth in your life? Or looking for ways to engage them over the winter school break? Cure winter-break boredom by signing them up for a fun and educational Winter Program, sponsored by Montana State University Billings Extended Campus. Extended Campus is offering a variety of youth winter camps geared for fourth through ninth-graders. The first set of winter youth camps is a trio of camps geared around award-winning robots. Children can take one, two, or all three of the camps during the week; a discounted rate of $380 applies if all three camps are taken. The cost for each camp includes instruction and the robot, so children can continue learning and playing at home! All of the robotics camps are taught by Darla Williams, K-12 extended studies educator and take place at the College of Education on the University Campus. For the first day-long camp on Dec. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (cost of $115), campers will be introduced to Ozobot. This robot teaches children the basics of coding in a fun and interactive way. An Ozobot has two “skins” to change appearance and markers to create challenging obstacle courses. The Meet Edison day-long camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 and costs $100. The Edison features a free, online programmable software that students will use to learn how to program their robot on their own. This robot can be changed up with LEGO bricks, so kids can keep the fun and learning going at home for hours and hours! The final camp, (a two-day camp), is the Arduino Gamer Camp, $205, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 and 30th. Here, students will receive the Arduino Gamer Kit, a basic circuit board that can be programmed to play games like Tetris and Snake! Attendees should be sure to bring a snack, lunch and water bottle for these day-long camps.
To register for one or all three camps, go online. Remember, sign up for all three camps and save $40! The second option is the I THINK Raspberry Pi Intermediate Camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., December 27- December 29, at City College room TECH B056. The cost of this camp is $165 and picks up where the Raspberry Pi Beginner camp left off last summer. Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop, Batiks, and Anita Godesign Embroidery Cards. Brother and Nolting Long Arm Dealer, sewing machine repairs and antique sewing machine sales round out their offerings. The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were
killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
