A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

Pinky and the Floyd calls Montana home, but has recently been called the Northwestʼs Hottest Pink Floyd Tribute Band! Pinky was founded in 2007 and has seen very few personnel changes over the years. Instead, this grass-roots effort has exploded in popularity, selling out shows across the state. They put on an amazing live show thatʼs both note-for-note and improvisational, but itʼs their superb musicianship that sets them apart from other Tribute Bands. This Wild Life have only been around since 2010 but they’ve already had multiple lives. The duo of Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso met as outcast drummers in their hometown of Long Beach, California, and eventually formed a well-received punk act. However, they eventually started to notice that their fans seemed to gravitate toward the duo’s acoustic material, which inspired them to form This Wild Life six years ago. Correspondingly if 2014’s Epitaph Records debut album Clouded saw them transitioning from stage dives to sing-alongs, their new album Low Tides shows the duo taking their songwriting to the next level by fleshing out these ten tracks with expanded arrangements and inventive instrumentation. In other words, it isn’t as much a reinvention as it is a progression and one that’s as memorable as they come.

MSUB’s Extended Campus offers selection of youth winter camps Looking for a different and exciting holiday present for the youth in your life? Or looking for ways to engage them over the winter school break? Cure winter-break boredom by signing them up for a fun and educational Winter Program, sponsored by Montana State University Billings Extended Campus. Extended Campus is offering a variety of youth winter camps geared for fourth through ninth-graders. The first set of winter youth camps is a trio of camps geared around award-winning robots. Children can take one, two, or all three of the camps during the week; a discounted rate of $380 applies if all three camps are taken. The cost for each camp includes instruction and the robot, so children can continue learning and playing at home! All of the robotics camps are taught by Darla Williams, K-12 extended studies educator and take place at the College of Education on the University Campus. For the first day-long camp on Dec. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (cost of $115), campers will be introduced to Ozobot. This robot teaches children the basics of coding in a fun and interactive way. An Ozobot has two “skins” to change appearance and markers to create challenging obstacle courses. The Meet Edison day-long camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 and costs $100. The Edison features a free, online programmable software that students will use to learn how to program their robot on their own. This robot can be changed up with LEGO bricks, so kids can keep the fun and learning going at home for hours and hours! The final camp, (a two-day camp), is the Arduino Gamer Camp, $205, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 and 30th. Here, students will receive the Arduino Gamer Kit, a basic circuit board that can be programmed to play games like Tetris and Snake! Attendees should be sure to bring a snack, lunch and water bottle for these day-long camps.
To register for one or all three camps, go online. Remember, sign up for all three camps and save $40! The second option is the I THINK Raspberry Pi Intermediate Camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., December 27- December 29, at City College room TECH B056. The cost of this camp is $165 and picks up where the Raspberry Pi Beginner camp left off last summer. Youth interested in this camp must have either taken the Beginner camp in 2015 or 2016 or get permission from the instructor. Instructing this exciting camp is Bruce Brumley, computer systems technology instructor at City College. The camp will focus on delving into more programming, both traditional and using SCRATCH, as well as also using the device as an external controller with electronic automation and to build and control electronic projects and motor controls. Attendees of this camp should note that equipment is NOT provided and students will need to bring their Raspberry Pi from the Beginning camp, all cables/materials, headphones, snack, water bottle and lunch. You can register online for this camp.

TIPPET RISE ART CENTER ANNOUNCES HIGHLIGHTS OF ITS SECOND SEASON IN SUMMER 2017 Tippet Rise Art Center has announced the dates and selected highlights of its next concert season, July 7 through September 17, 2017. The Art Center, which opened in June 2016, is located on a 10,260-acre working ranch in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains and celebrates the union of land, art, architecture and music, presenting concerts by world-renowned musicians and large-scale contemporary sculpture. Building on a successful inaugural year, and responding to demand from both the local public and visitors from around the world, Tippet Rise has added another four weekends to the season and several Sunday performances. A limited number of tickets for performances will go on sale online beginning March 1, 2017, with additional tickets being released for purchase throughout the spring. The schedule will feature a mix of new and returning artists, including the Tippet Rise debut of pianist Natasha Paremski in a solo recital including Chopin’s Mazurkas and Chopin’s 4th Scherzo as well as a performance with the Escher String Quartet, also in their Tippet Rise debut. Returning artists include pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, performing Medtner’s Sonata tragica, as well as Liszt’s Harmonies du Soir, and violinist Caroline Goulding, who will play several concerts including a three-part performance featuring Enescu’s Impressions from Childhood, Dvorak’s romantic pieces and Schumann’s Sonata in D minor no. 2. The season will also include a new work by Aaron Jay Kernis to be performed by Pedja Muzijevic, as the first premiere to result from a three-year commissioning program. (Subsequent Kernis premieres will be a work for the Borromeo Quartet, in 2018, and a piece for small chamber ensemble and voice, in 2019.) Performances will take place both indoors and out. The 150-seat Olivier Music Barn, inspired by the powerful performance spaces where Haydn and Mozart imagined their works would be performed, serves as Tippet Rise’s primary concert venue. Pre-concert lectures will take place at the Tiara, a 100-seat acoustic shell without walls. Outdoor performances at sculptural structures and sculptures (Domo by Ensamble Studio and Satellite No. 5:
Pioneer by Stephen Talasnik) will provide audiences with an unparalleled opportunity to experience music with 360° views of the rolling hills. To expand public access to its artistic program, Tippet Rise has now released several specially produced short films and concerts from its inaugural season on the Tippet Rise website, with additional videos to be made available in the coming weeks. Videos include Tchaikovsky Piano Competition Laureate George Li performing Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2; an artist spotlight interview with pianist Jenny Chen; short documentary films of artists Patrick Dougherty and Stephen Talasnik, who created site-specific works for the center; and two videos highlighting the artwork at Tippet Rise, including one featuring the sculpture Stainless Stealer by Alexander Calder, on loan from the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, with an original score by the young French composer, Julien Brocal. Tippet Rise Art Center is closed for the winter season, though it is playing host to several community events and screenings, among them a performance of Hamlet by Montana Shakespeare in the Schools that took place in early December. The Adrian Brinkerhoff Foundation will sponsor poetry throughout the summer season, inserted in the everyday life of the Art Center, with specific readings by actors and poets to be announced in the spring. Tippet Rise Art Center will reopen to the public in late June, before the start of the summer music series, for daily visits on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with prior registration. Visitors can explore the ranch via 3.5 miles of hiking and biking trails, with an additional 3.5 miles being added this winter and spring. Electric shuttles are also offered to guests on a regular schedule to each of the sculpture sites.

Cost is $10, or free with valid MSUB ID at the door. MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Back in 2004, the hit movie “Anchorman,” hit the big screen. It includes the scene many Americans still love: where character Ron Burgundy is easily goaded into playing his flute. That clip has become synonymous with “ jazz flute,” but Katisse Buckingham, the Los Angelesbased musician who recorded the track for the movie, didn’t know it at the time. “I thought it was just another recording session,” Buckingham said.
The lesson, he said, is that monumental aspects of being a musician don’t always come when expected. “Some of the most memorable experiences I’ve had I didn’t really think they would be when I was doing it,” he said. katisse hi rez grafittiBuckingham hopes to impart that lesson on the student musicians he’ll encounter at the upcoming Montana State University Billings Jazz Festival as this year’s guest artist. The festival takes place on January 27 and will feature several college, high school and middle school jazz ensembles from around the state. Buckingham leads his own contemporary ensemble playing with Billy Childs’ jazz quartet, the Zaqinul Legacy project and John DaVersa’s large ensemble. He also spends a lot of time in the recording studio and has been featured in movies like “Minions” and “All is Lost”, among many others. He has also recorded with or performed with artists like Dr. Dre and Prince. His versatile style, influenced by everything from classic rock, hip hop, Afro-Cuban and blue grass and he strives to live by the words of Duke Ellington who said, “There are two kinds of music – good music, and the other kind.” “I’m ears wide open,” he said. “And I’d like to impart with students that there are many different styles of music that are viable and important. With a great jazz foundation that can easily parlay into a wonderful career.” Past festivals have been very successful with guest artists such as Wayne Bergeron, Maynard Ferguson,
Bill Watrous and Doc Cheatum, to name a few. Regardless of size, the ensembles descending on MSUB for the festival will have opportunities for adjudication by a variety of highly experienced clinicians.MSUB Assistant Professor of Low Brass John Roberts said he is excited for this year’s festival. Registration for the clinic for schools is still open. “I’m really excited about Katisse and our lineup of clinicians we have for this year’s festival,” Roberts said. “It’s going to give students a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot and have a great time.” Last year, roughly 900 people came to the festival and Roberts anticipates turn-out to be at least that many. He’s optimistic the concert will sellout as well. The evening show, from 7-9 p.m., January 27, at Petro Theater on the University campus will feature the MSUB Jazz Ensemble and Buckingham. Tickets are $10 and available here. Students, staff and faculty with a valid ID are free. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-90. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something as tasty For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleryies Yellowstone Art Gallery. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were
killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
