NOVA Center for the Performing Arts presents The Norwegians! NOVA Center for the Performing Arts is excited to present The Norwegians! Directed by Backyard Theater owner Amanda Megyesi McCave and assistant directed by Kievan McCave. The Norwegians is the story of two badly scorned women, who hire two hitmen to take care of their boyfriends. However, the Norwegian hitmen aren’t exactly what the girls had in mind. This comedy is guaranteed to make you laugh and say, “Uff da!” The Norwegians features: Christopher Greensweight, Matt McCave, Kate Restad, and Hailey Heitz. Ticket prices are $21 for adults, $16 for seniors (65+)/military,

and $10 for students. The Norwegians is sponsored by Sons of Norway, Robyn Peterson, and Kathy O’Brien. MSUB community spreads holiday cheer Sometimes, the best gift is the one given instead of received. The Montana State University Billings community made a huge impact this holiday season by making more than 100 Christmas’s brighter by donating toys to the The Salvation Army- Billings Angel Tree program. The toy drive received toys from staff, faculty, students, administrators, sports teams and community members, said Office for Community Involvement Volunteer Engagement Coordinator Shayla Fox. Not only does the annual event help area families during the holidays, the toy drive builds comradery on campus. “Every year the MSU Billing campus community comes together to make Christmas a brighter place for children in the community,” Fox said. “We see students, faculty, staff, athletic teams, and community members donate each year.”

Last year, 20,000 children were served by the Angel Tree program in the Salvation Army’s Intermountain Region which includes; Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. According to the organization’s website it wanted to help at least 25,000 children this holiday season. Additionally, this year the OCI partnered with TriO, through Student Support Services, and expanded the campus’ Angel Tree efforts to include efforts to help student-parents. The generosity on campus provided gifts for 47 children whose parents attend MSUB. The Accounting Club also got involved by adopting ten angels and providing wrapping supplies for the gifts provided. SSS TRIO provides support for students seeking academic development, and assists students with basic college requirements by motivating students toward successful completion of their college careers.

Groundbreaking sax and jazz flutist slated for MSUB Jazz Festival MSUB Jazz Festival to culminate with concert featuring guest artist Katisse Buckingham and the MSUB Jazz Band from 7-9 p.m., Jan. 27, at Petro Theater. Cost is $10, or free with valid MSUB ID at the door. MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Back in 2004, the hit movie “Anchorman,” hit the big screen. It includes the scene many Americans still love: where character Ron Burgundy is easily goaded into playing his flute. That clip has become synonymous with “ jazz flute,” but Katisse Buckingham, the Los Angelesbased musician who recorded the track for the movie, didn’t know it at the time. “I thought it was just another recording session,” Buckingham said.

The lesson, he said, is that monumental aspects of being a musician don’t always come when expected. “Some of the most memorable experiences I’ve had I didn’t really think they would be when I was doing it,” he said. Buckingham hopes to impart that lesson on the student musicians he’ll encounter at the upcoming Montana State University Billings Jazz Festival as this year’s guest artist. The festival takes place on January 27 and will feature several college, high school and middle school jazz ensembles from around the state. Buckingham leads his own contemporary ensemble playing with Billy Childs’ jazz quartet, the Zaqinul Legacy project and John DaVersa’s large ensemble. He also spends a lot of time in the recording studio and has been featured in movies like “Minions” and “All is Lost”, among many others. He has also recorded with or performed with artists like Dr. Dre and Prince. His versatile style, influenced by everything from classic rock, hip hop, Afro-Cuban and blue grass and he strives to live by the words of Duke Ellington who said, “There are two kinds of music – good music, and the other kind.” “I’m ears wide open,” he said. “And I’d like to impart with students that there are many different styles of music that are viable and important. With a great jazz foundation that can easily parlay into a wonderful career.” Past festivals have been very successful with guest

artists such as Wayne Bergeron, Maynard Ferguson, Bill Watrous and Doc Cheatum, to name a few. Regardless of size, the ensembles descending on MSUB for the festival will have opportunities for adjudication by a variety of highly experienced clinicians.MSUB Assistant Professor of Low Brass John Roberts said he is excited for this year’s festival. Registration for the clinic for schools is still open. “I’m really excited about Katisse and our lineup of clinicians we have for this year’s festival,” Roberts said. “It’s going to give students a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot and have a great time.” Last year, roughly 900 people came to the festival and Roberts anticipates turn-out to be at least that many. He’s optimistic the concert will sell out as well. The evening show, from 7-9 p.m., January 27, at Petro Theater on the University campus will feature the MSUB Jazz Ensemble and Buckingham.

We are so lucky here in Billings, MT! Sparkling snow, blue skies and contradance! Yes, an awesome contradance community has taken shape on the lovely wooden floor of Cedar Hall in MetraPark. Contradance Billings is excited to announce that Sassafras Stomp, a nationally known folk duo consisting of Johanna Davis and Adam Nordell, will be serving up some lively tunes for our January 6th dance so we can kick up our heels and take a spin around the floor. Adam plays guitar, sings, stamps his feet in syncopated rhythms, and plays the banjo. He also performs as a songwriter. He grew up in the hills south of Helena, MT, but discovered high octane, traditional fiddle music at the contradance in Trenton, ME. Johanna sings and plays fiddle and sometimes banjo. NOVA Center for the Performing Arts presents season 15 of Funky Bunch! Funky Bunch is NOVA’s high school improv troupe. They are every bit as funny as the adult troupe-just not as old. This year’s members include Emmy Hart, Issa McKnight, Kesley Larson, Kievan McCave, Maisy Jam, Skyler Brauneis, Will Goodridge, and Daniel Amato. Funky Bunch is led by Catherine Langlas Bergman and Tiffany Melia. Catherine has been around theater most of her life. She started with Venture Theatre in high school and moved to Los Angeles at 17. She has acted in television, commercials, film, and print work and is an active member of the Screen Actors Guild. She also studied improv at the Groundlings. Now back home, she is the leader of the Funky Bunch, a member of the Venture Improv troupe, and has performed at Venture/NOVA

in the shows In The Next Room (or the Vibrator Play), August: Osage County and Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Tiffany Melia grew up doing improv with Funky Bunch and is now a member of Venture Improv. ZooMontana Set to Ring in the “Zoo” Year ZooMontana will hold its 3rd annual Noon Year’s Eve Celebration to welcome in the “Zoo” year on Saturday, December 31st from 11am to 2pm. The celebration will be held in the new EEC ZooPavilion. The structure will be enclosed and heated, although winter clothing is still recommended. Mountain Mudd will be on site selling hot coffee and other refreshments. The event will include crafts and activities for kids with a ball dropping and celebration toast (apple juice) at Noon. Guests can visit with the animals and, if there is snow, are welcome to bring sleds and enjoy some snow-filled fun on the hills of the Bison Field near the Zoo’s Homestead House. “This event just keeps growing, so we are excited to move it into the new pavilion,” said Jeff Ewelt, executive director of ZooMontana. “It is so much fun watching the kids enjoy the ball dropping, something many of them don’t stay awake to see at

Midnight!” The zoo will be open regular hours, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., allowing guests to come early and stay after the event to enjoy the Zoo. Regular Zoo admission applies while ZooMembers are FREE. New Shanghai Circus Performs at ABT January 8 at 3 p.m. After a residency in Branson, Missouri, the multi award winning Chinese acrobats of New Shanghai Circus bring their national tour to Alberta Bair Theater on Sunday, January 8 at 3:00 p.m. Founded in 1951 as the Shanghai Acrobatic Theatre, The New Shanghai Circus has won more Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in domestic and international circus competitions to date than any other Chinese acrobatic company. "In acts that often trace their origins to the harvest festivals of more than 2,000 years ago,” says The New York Times, “this youthful, handsome and graceful company spends a swift two hours in a range of demanding performances, most of them typifying Chinese circus and constituting a refreshing alternative to the Western tradition. Under direction of Zhao Lizhi, the artistry, individually and collectively, attains levels that make it seem almost unfair to single out any act.” The art of Chinese acrobatics developed out of the Lunar New Year harvest celebrations, where the village’s peasants and craftsmen would hold a kind of Chinese Thanksgiving. Acrobats used household tools and common items found around the farm and workshop as part of their exciting feats. Performers

passed their skills down from generation to generation and great acrobatic families of China entertained everyone from city rulers to village people, performing at ceremonial carnivals and public theaters across the country. Today only a few descendants of the old and famous acrobatics families remain. These individuals have organized China’s traditional entertainers into professional acrobatic troupes with formal academies for training young, promising entertainers and internationally renowned companies. Modern-day Chinese acrobatics reflect the industry, resourcefulness and courage of the Chinese people. Currently, there are over 120 professional acrobatic troupes across China, and more than 12,000 performers. This performance of New Shanghai Circus is sponsored by Bill and Anne Cole and hibu. About the Bucky Beaver Ground Grippers The Bucky Beaver Ground Grippers, named after a golf shoe invented in the early 1940s, was originated by Joe Link and George Devries while playing a round of golf at Pryor Creek Golf Club in 1992. The Five original members are: Joe Link (lead guitar), George Devries (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Kirk Brumfield (bass), Rich Lutton (vocals), and John Link (drums). John Link was later replaced by Jason Foster. The band has entertained thousands over the years, including the Prince of Monaco. They have opened for such acts as McBride and the Ride, Montgomery Gentry, Little Texas, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Restless Heart and Diamond Rio, just to name a few. They play a wide variety of music ranging from George Strait to Led Zepplin, from funk to blues. The Bucky Beaver Ground Grippers are a fun group, who enjoy helping people have a great time! About the MidLife Chryslers In 1997, a small group of physicians began gathering regularly to play music and relax away from the pressures of their vocation. Bob Snider, Mac McClave, and Doug Ezell would play and sing old folk tunes and rock standards. It was pretty ragged at first. After a while though, they were sounding pretty good and added two more doctors: Hal Forseth and Jim Epler. They had a great time and began to sound almost good. Paula McClave joined. Then for Christmas 1999, their shifty wives booked them a gig! It was to be the following April at the Club Carlin. They Panicked! They practiced! A Lot!! They came up with a name. The MidLife Chryslers were born! Playing for a few friends and loved ones went pretty well, and a few more gigs were added. A few more electric guitars and

amps were added too, and they began to sound more and more like a real rock band. Epler retired from the band and late in 2000, Mark Moak joined as drummer. Just as they were getting going, the death of Bob Snider in March 2001 dealt them a major setback. After a few months off however, the music and the spirit of Bob called them back and the Chryslers reformed. With the additions of Russ Harvey and Cathy Hansen Brown, the MidLife Chryslers took another form. In 2006, Mac and Paula left the band; Hal moved over to bass and Scott Millikan came on to share lead guitar with Russ. Then Cathy departed and in April 2007, Holly Malloy Hanson joined the Chryslers as lead female vocalist. In 2008, four horn players joined the band, adding a new sound to the Chryslers: Laurel Linde on saxophone, Steve Patton on trombone, along with Laury Sealy and Kevin Mc Bride on trumpets. About Ellen & the Old School In 2011, Ellen Moak was asked by the Alberta Bair Theater to perform in their Wild West Soiree. Ellen, a nursing student at MSU, who also holds a degree in vocal performance from Rocky Mountain College, didn’t have a band to sing with. She called her dad, drummer for the MidLife Chryslers and Art professor at Rocky Mountain College, Mark Moak. Together with Scot Ninnemann (The Innocents Abroad,) on vocals and guitar, and Sam Hamm on bass- Ellen & the Old School were formed.Brendan Fox took over for Sam Hamm when he moved to Seattle in the summer of 2014. Fox is a music graduate from Rocky Mountain College and plays with the RMC Jazz band. Ellen & the Old School currently play for various local fundraisers in the Billings area. They also play for events like the St John’s Summer Concert Series, the Billings Clinic Classic and the Beartooth Ball in Red Lodge. Ellen also won the 2015 Billings Symphony’s Country Idol contest and performed with the orchestra in March 2015’s concert Gone Country.
