Groundbreaking sax and jazz flutist slated for MSUB Jazz Festival MSUB Jazz Festival to culminate with concert featuring guest artist Katisse Buckingham and the MSUB Jazz Band from 7-9 p.m., Jan. 27, at Petro Theater. Cost is $10, or free with valid MSUB ID at the door. MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Back in 2004, the hit movie “Anchorman,” hit the big screen. It includes the scene many Americans still love: where character Ron Burgundy is easily goaded into playing his flute. That clip has become synonymous with “ jazz flute,” but Katisse Buckingham, the Los Angelesbased musician who recorded the track for the movie, didn’t know it at the time. “I thought it was just another recording session,” Buckingham said.
The lesson, he said, is that monumental aspects of being a musician don’t always come when expected. “Some of the most memorable experiences I’ve had I didn’t really think they would be when I was doing it,” he said. Buckingham hopes to impart that lesson on the student musicians he’ll encounter at the upcoming Montana State University Billings Jazz Festival as this year’s guest artist. The festival takes place on January 27 and will feature several college, high school and middle school jazz ensembles from around the state. Buckingham leads his own contemporary ensemble playing with Billy Childs’ jazz quartet, the Zaqinul Legacy project and John DaVersa’s large ensemble. He also spends a lot of time in the recording studio and has been featured in movies like “Minions” and “All is Lost”, among many others. He has also recorded with or performed with artists like Dr. Dre and Prince. His versatile style, influenced by everything from classic rock, hip hop, Afro-Cuban and blue grass and he strives to live by the words of Duke Ellington who said, “There are two kinds of music – good music, and the other kind.” “I’m ears wide open,” he said. “And I’d like to impart with students that there are many different styles of music that are viable and important. With a great jazz foundation that can easily parlay into a wonderful career.” Past festivals have been very successful with guest
artists such as Wayne Bergeron, Maynard Ferguson, Bill Watrous and Doc Cheatum, to name a few. Regardless of size, the ensembles descending on MSUB for the festival will have opportunities for adjudication by a variety of highly experienced clinicians.MSUB Assistant Professor of Low Brass John Roberts said he is excited for this year’s festival. Registration for the clinic for schools is still open. “I’m really excited about Katisse and our lineup of clinicians we have for this year’s festival,” Roberts said. “It’s going to give students a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot and have a great time.” Last year, roughly 900 people came to the festival and Roberts anticipates turn-out to be at least that many. He’s optimistic the concert will sell out as well. The evening show, from 7-9 p.m., January 27, at Petro Theater on the University campus will feature the MSUB Jazz Ensemble and Buckingham.

CONTRADANCE BILLINGS WITH SASSAFRAS STOMP
We are so lucky here in Billings, MT! Sparkling snow, blue skies and contradance! Yes, an awesome contradance community has taken shape on the lovely wooden floor of Cedar Hall in MetraPark. Contradance Billings is excited to announce that Sassafras Stomp, a nationally known folk duo consisting of Johanna Davis and Adam Nordell, will be serving up some lively tunes for our January 6th dance so we can kick up our heels and take a spin around the floor. Adam plays guitar, sings, stamps his feet in syncopated rhythms, and plays the banjo. He also performs as a songwriter. He grew up in the hills south of Helena, MT, but discovered high octane, traditional fiddle music at the contradance in Trenton, ME. Johanna sings and plays fiddle and sometimes banjo. She grew up in a thriving community of dancers and contradance musicians in Round Pond, ME. Amy Letson will again teach and call an assortment of very doable contradances. Come join us in Cedar Hall at MetraPark! Over the past 46 years Dunham and his world famous characters have garnered numerous accolades; from being named Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list of Most Powerful Entertainers, as well as setting the Guinness World Records for the “Most Tickets Sold for a Stand-Up Comedy Tour,” to setting the record for viewership on Comedy Central. He has sold more than 7 million DVDs worldwide and has nearly a billion views on YouTube. Dunham hand-crafts each character personally from conception to the final coat of paint then brings them to life on stage. His beloved troupe of sidekicks are: Walter the Grumpy Retiree, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, the beer-fueled redneck Bubba J, the manic purple creature Peanut, the spicy pepper from south of the border Jose Jalapeno and Little Jeff, a miniversion of the ringmaster himself. Dunham has carved a unique corner in the comedy world that’s as funny as it is popular. This Wild Life, Royal Teeth, Oyster Kids
This Wild Life have only been around since 2010 but they’ve already had multiple lives. The duo of Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso met as outcast drummers in their hometown of Long Beach, California, and eventually formed a well-received punk act. However, they eventually started to notice that their fans seemed to gravitate toward the duo’s acoustic material, which inspired them to form This Wild Life six years ago. Correspondingly if 2014’s Epitaph Records debut album Clouded saw them transitioning from stage dives to sing-alongs, their new album Low Tides shows the duo taking their songwriting to the next level by fleshing out these ten tracks with expanded arrangements and inventive instrumentation. In other words, it isn’t as much a reinvention as it is a progression and one that’s as memorable as they come. New Shanghai Circus Performs at ABT January 8-9 After a residency in Branson, Missouri, the multi award winning Chinese acrobats of New Shanghai Circus bring their national tour to Alberta Bair Theater on Sunday, January 8 at 3:00 p.m. Founded in 1951 as the Shanghai Acrobatic Theatre, The New Shanghai Circus has won more Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in domestic and international circus competitions to date than any other Chinese acrobatic company. "In acts that often trace their origins to the harvest festivals of more than 2,000 years ago,” says The New York Times, “this youthful, handsome and graceful company spends a swift two hours in a range of demanding performances, most of them typifying Chinese circus and constituting a refreshing alternative to the Western tradition. Under direction of Zhao Lizhi, the artistry, individually and collectively, attains levels that make it seem almost unfair to single out any act.” The art of Chinese acrobatics developed out of the Lunar New Year harvest celebrations, where the village’s peasants and craftsmen would hold a kind of Chinese Thanksgiving. Acrobats used household tools and common items found around the farm and workshop as part of their exciting feats. Performers passed their skills down from generation to generation and great acrobatic families of China entertained everyone from city rulers to village people, performing at ceremonial carnivals and public theaters across the country.
Today only a few descendants of the old and famous acrobatics families remain. These individuals have organized China’s traditional entertainers into professional acrobatic troupes with formal academies for training young, promising entertainers and internationally renowned companies. MSUB Library sponsors Indigenous Writer category for popular High Plains Book Awards New award an opportunity to highlight indigenous contributions to High Plains literature MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES - The Montana State University Billings’ Library is proud to announce it is sponsoring a new award category for the High Plains Book Awards: Indigenous Author. The Library has been involved with the HPBA committee in some capacity since the award’s inception in 2006. However, the Library jumped at the chance to spotlight indigenous authors from the High Plains regions, including Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. “The High Plains Book Awards has a decade long history of celebrating literature of the high plains region, but there was an opportunity to recognize a previously under-represented segment of the area’s literary tradition,” said MSUB Library Interim Director Megan Thomas. “While indigenous authors have received awards in the past, this award will highlight their contributions to literature.” The award has grown from just three categories from when the first were given in 2007, said High Plains Book Awards Chairwoman Shari Nault.
“Adding this award category has been discussed for quite a few years,” Nault said. “This is extremely exciting for us because there is a lot of new contemporary work by native writers and we want to showcase and give a voice to it.” She added that just as the number of entrants into the book awards increases overall year-to-year, so does the quantity of those penned by indigenous authors. “The mission is to celebrate literature on the High Plains and this new award is especially appropriate,” Nault said. Although the MSUB Foundation sponsors the First Book Award, one of 13 award categories slated for 2017, the Library award is the only award sponsored by a University department. Other High Plains Book Award categories include: Medicine and Science, Children’s, Fiction, Nonfiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry, Woman Writer, Art & Photography, Short Stories, Culinary and Young Adult. Nominated books must be published for the first time in 2016 and winners will receive a $500 prize and be invited to participate in the annual High Plains BookFest in October. Nominations will be open mid-January to mid-March and criteria will be posted at that time.

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were
killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
