MSUB "Setting the Community Table” for Power of One Week MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Although Ken Nwadike didn’t qualify for the 2014 Boston Marathon (failing by a mere 23 seconds!), after witnessing the devastation of the bombing the year before, was determined to participate in some fashion. Nwadike attended the race and gave free hugs as encouragement along the route, boosting spirits and making headlines as well. That simple act of providing a little light and love years ago has blossomed into Nwadike’s Free Hugs Project, which he is bringing to Montana State University Billings during Power of One Week. The annual event, steeped in the tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., takes place January 16 through the 21. This year’s theme, “Setting the Community Table,” is about opening a dialogue and raising awareness about poverty and homelessness. MSU Billings presents the Free Hugs Project at 7p.m., January 18 in Petro Theatre. The event is free and open to the public. “Ken has a huge online presence as the ‘Free Hugs Guy,” but he also overcame obstacles in his own life, like being a homeless student athlete,” said Interim Student Engagement Coordinator Cassie Solberg. “We’re excited to have him come to campus and share his experiences.” Of course, as one can tell by viewing Nwadike’s many online videos, the Free Hugs Project will be uplifting and positive. Many of his videos have been viewed tens of millions of times! Solberg said Nwadike will also be on campus that day visiting with students. MSUB has been commemorating Dr. King’s life for over 20 years with a bell ringing ceremony and this year will be no different. Power of One Week will begin with this somber ceremony, which symbolizes the quest for peace, justice, human rights and social and economic progress for all people, at 9:45a.m., January 16, at Peaks to Plains Park. Keynote speaker is Dr. Ginny Lee Mermel, BackPack Meals and Teen Pantry Programs coordinator for Billings Schools District Two. Shayla Fox, student engagement coordinator with the Office for Community Involvement, said Mermel was a big help in getting the Yellowstone Emergency Pantry up and running. A grand opening for the pantry will be held from 3-5p.m., January 19. “When we conducted a survey about food insecurity on campus we were surprised to find out that it was more than we thought,” Fox said.
Fox hopes this year’s Power of One Week helps reduce the stigma around poverty and homelessness, not just on campus but around the community as well. “There is a stereotype people have about homelessness, but it could be your neighbor or friend,” Fox said. “And a lot of people who live in Billings work paycheck to paycheck. They are just a couple of weeks from poverty or homelessness and so we want to eliminate the ‘them and us,’ from our language. It could be anyone.” A complete description of events for Power of One Week can be found online.
MSUB Power of One Week Schedule: January 16 9:45 a.m., Bell Ringing Ceremony & Speaker, Peaks to Plains/ SUB Atrium January 17 7 p.m., Grocery BINOG, SUB Atrium January 18 5 p.m., “Pack a Care Kit” SUB Atrium 7 p.m., Ken Nwadike: Free Hugs Project, Petro Theatre January 19, 3-5 p.m., Yellowjacket Emergency Pantry Grand Opening, SUB Room 222 5 p.m., Hunger Banquet, SUB Upper Galleria January 20, 12:30 p.m., Panel/Lunch & Learn, Beartooth January 21 9:30 a.m., Service Saturday, SUB Atrium, All events free and open to the public.

Throughout the Ennis Sisters’ childhood, if their parents weren’t making music, it was coming through the radio. particularly the Irish Newfoundland radio shows, which aired on Saturday and Sunday mornings. “There was just no escaping the Irish Newfoundland, Traditional music growing up,” says Karen. “When we first began singing for an audience, these were the songs we sang. THIS WILD LIFE, ROYAL TEETH, OYSTER KIDS
This Wild Life have only been around since 2010 but they’ve already had multiple lives. The duo of Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso met as outcast drummers in their hometown of Long Beach, California, and eventually formed a well-received punk act. However, they eventually started to notice that their fans seemed to gravitate toward the duo’s acoustic material, which inspired them to form This Wild Life six years ago. Correspondingly if 2014’s Epitaph Records debut album Clouded saw them transitioning from stage dives to sing-alongs, their new album Low Tides shows the duo taking their songwriting to the next level by fleshing out these ten tracks with expanded arrangements and inventive instrumentation. In other words, it isn’t as much a reinvention as it is a progression and one that’s as memorable as they come. When you consider the way the songs on Low Tides themselves to like performances it seems inevitable that this is the moment that takes This Wild Life out of the background and propels them into the spotlight. “For the first time in our career I think we have the production and the live show to take our performances to the next level and the songs on this album really embody that leap forward as well,” Jordan summarizes. But don’t take our word for it, check out This Wild Life when they come through your city and witness their power and beauty firsthand. NAPPY ROOTS
21+ Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Nappyness: In an economically recessed climate, Nappy Roots has joined the rest of the nation in trying to understand and work through financial and emotional struggles. No stranger to challenges, this four-man collective from Kentucky tackled their obstacles and, in the process, their self-honest work emerged in form of 5 studio albums and 10 mixtapes. As usual, Nappy Roots examine our alienable rights, reason, and truth through lyrical originality and voyage. Since Nappy Roots entered the music scene in 1998, they have remained real, humble, talented guys with inherent, undeniable southern swagger. After the international success of Watermelon, Chicken, & Grits, selling over 3 million albums, the members of Nappy Roots were flying high while still acutely aware of how far it could be to the bottom should they fall. It is that practical and genuine presence of mind that helped them sustain touring as a group these last ten years. Building a vastly loyal fan-base nationwide, fans and friends can be used interchangeably when referring to their army of followers. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave N 9 p.m. $15 JAN. 18

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were
killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
