MSUB writer-in-residence presents ‘My Miseducation’ MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Billings novelist Craig Lancaster will present a final public lecture at 4:30 p.m., January 26 at Montana State University Billings in Liberal Arts Building Room 205. Lancaster has been the MSUB writer-in-residence, hosted by the Honors Program, and will discuss “My Miseducation,” during the event. His lecture is an extension of his fall seminar, Finding Your Way into Fiction, which combined students and community auditors. "My tenure as visiting writer at MSUB concludes with this public lecture on Jan. 26, and I would be honored indeed if you'd join me there,” Lancaster said. “"I wouldn't say it's going to be a lecture. More like a reflection.” The author of several books, including “600 Hours of Edward,” and “The Summer of Son,” said he enjoyed the time spent working with students at the university and his final lecture, free and open to the public, will include time spent looking back on it.
Craig Lancaster, photos by Casey Page
"I love teachers. I came out of this thing with more respect for them than I'd ever had before, if that's even possible,” he said. “My experience this fall bridged the distance between the incomplete student I once was and the good citizen I've always tried to be.” After a long career in journalism, Lancaster moved to Montana in 2006 and published his first novel in 2009. He is a Montana Honor Book and High Plains Book Award winner, as well as a Utah Book Awards fiction finalist. Additionally, Lancaster is the design director for “The Montana Quarterly.” The magazine has been voted the best in the Pacific Northwest by the Society of Professional Journalists three times. Recently, Lancaster contributed to MSUB’s “Peaks to Plains” magazine, reflecting upon legendary teacher and writer Sue Hart. University Honors Program Director David Craig said, “The Honors Guest Writer in Residence Program is a wonderful opportunity to connect students and community members with accomplished writers. It has been a tremendous success.” Since 2012, the Honors Program has hosted a guest writer. That year, students studied Hemingway with Ernest Hemingway’s last assistant, Valerie Hemingway. Additional guest writers have included contemporary travel author Tim Cahill, a founding editor of Outside magazine, and nature, ecology, and environmental writer Gary Ferguson. For more information about the guest writer program visit its website.

INTRODUCTION TO SQUARE DANCING
If we’re supposed to walk 10,000 steps, shouldn’t they be fun? Well, in an evening of square dancing it’s possible to dance two miles. On average, that’s 4,000 steps. In other words, get almost half of your 10,000 steps while having a whole lot of fun! If you can walk, you can square dance. There is a learning curve, but since when is learning a bad thing? Our caller is an excellent teacher who will have you dancing right away with what you’ve learned so far. Square dancing is fast paced and fun, full of split-second reactions because you’re never sure what call is coming next. You’ll feel exhausted and exhilarated all at the same time and you’ll leave feeling more energized than when you came. Best of all you’ll be amid the most welcoming folks in Billings, people who will cheer you on and who aren’t above getting a little rowdy. Come try it out. The first two sessions, January 12 and 19, are free so you have nothing to lose. There’s even free coffee and snacks. Everyone age 12 and up is welcome; bring your Shape Up Montana team! Wear comfortable clothing and non-marking shoes and come ready to move. Join a square, make a circle of friends! For more information visit www.

They celebrating their five year anniversary in 2016, the band has grown significantly from thanks to a relentless tour schedule and a live show that’s likened to a sonic boom. Artists and festival promoters have caught notice with the band playing Riot Fest, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and over 400 shows with the likes of Jane’s Addiction, the Toadies, Electric 6 and many more. Instead of boasting, Nate Valdez (guitar/vocals) and Eric Riley (drums/vocals) said, “the Chicago Tribune described us best, ‘Stripped down to a simple essence, the band's hardedged fare scampers, thrusts and giddily thrashes...Dirty, fun and caked in garage grime, the songs are unconcerned with trends.’ Ok, we have a show to play.”

NILE Scholarship Application Now Available The Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) Scholarship Program funded by the NILE Foundation, is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year. Since 1990, the NILE has awarded scholarships to deserving FFA and 4-H students that have been actively involved in their respective programs and communities, excelled in the classroom, and participated in NILE events. "Promoting the future of agriculture through the support of youth via scholarships is a long standing tradition of NILE." says Jennifer Boka, General Manager of the NILE. "Educating today's youth to be tomorrows ag proponents is crucial to the entire world and we are NILE are proud to support and embrace the future of agriculture." Similar to previous years, the NILE Scholarship
Committee will be awarding three levels of scholarships. The first level will be the one-time scholarship awarded to high school seniors, similar to what the NILE has always done. The second level of scholarships offered will also be a one-time grant, for students already enrolled in College or a Vo-Tech school. Finally, the third level, which will offer the greatest scholarship amount, will be a rolling scholarship. The rolling scholarships will be offered to a select group of High School Seniors who will have the opportunity to renew the scholarship yearly, up to four years of their secondary education. Recipients of rolling scholarships will be chosen from the pool of applicants that are current seniors in High School. Each year the NILE touches the lives of nearly 10,000 youth through its many programs, events,
"live" animal scholarships, and college scholarships. Every year the NILE provides over $55,000 in cash and live animal scholarships. The NILE Foundation was established in 2009 as a supporting arm of the NILE organization, which is dedicated to the promotion of livestock, agriculture education, and respect for the western culture. Scholarship applications and guidelines can be found on the NILE's website, or by contacting the NILE Office at 406-256-2495. Quilt Shops
BACKDOOR QUILT SHOPPE Famous for its “quilting bee” atmosphere. That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter. Their way of making quilting as fun for you as it is for them includes offering classes (one day or a series), helping you with fabric selections and quilting techniques, and offering open sewing times. Here for an extended stay? Come in and quilt! They have a huge selection of quilting supplies and sell finished quilts, too. They have masculine, Western and other theme favorites also. Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop, Batiks, and Anita Godesign Embroidery Cards. Brother and Nolting Long Arm Dealer, sewing machine repairs and antique sewing machine sales round out their offerings. Open Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. 406-655-1001. Located next to West End Perkins behind King Town Center at 712 Carbon Street. “Come in and let us share our love of quilting with you!” www.backdoorquiltshoppe. com

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were
killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
