Groundbreaking sax and jazz flutist slated for MSUB Jazz Festival MSUB Jazz Festival to culminate with concert featuring guest artist Katisse Buckingham and the MSUB Jazz Band from 7-9 p.m., Jan. 27, at Petro Theater. Cost is $10, or free with valid MSUB ID at the door. MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Back in 2004, the hit movie “Anchorman,” hit the big screen. It includes the scene many Americans still love: where character Ron Burgundy is easily goaded into playing his flute. That clip has become synonymous with “ jazz flute,” but Katisse Buckingham, the Los Angelesbased musician who recorded the track for the movie, didn’t know it at the time. “I thought it was just another recording session,” Buckingham said.

The lesson, he said, is that monumental aspects of being a musician don’t always come when expected. “Some of the most memorable experiences I’ve had I didn’t really think they would be when I was doing it,” he said. Buckingham hopes to impart that lesson on the student musicians he’ll encounter at the upcoming Montana State University Billings Jazz Festival as this year’s guest artist. The festival takes place on January 27 and will feature several college, high school and middle school jazz ensembles from around the state. Buckingham leads his own contemporary ensemble playing with Billy Childs’ jazz quartet, the Zaqinul Legacy project and John DaVersa’s large ensemble. He also spends a lot of time in the recording studio and has been featured in movies like “Minions” and “All is Lost”, among many others. He has also recorded with or performed with artists like Dr. Dre and Prince. His versatile style, influenced by everything from classic rock, hip hop, Afro-Cuban and blue grass and he strives to live by the words of Duke Ellington who said, “There are two kinds of music – good music, and the other kind.” “I’m ears wide open,” he said. “And I’d like to impart with students that there are many different styles of music that are viable and important. With a great jazz foundation that can easily parlay into a wonderful career.” Past festivals have been very successful with guest artists such as Wayne Bergeron, Maynard Ferguson, Bill Watrous and Doc Cheatum, to name a few.

Regardless of size, the ensembles descending on MSUB for the festival will have opportunities for adjudication by a variety of highly experienced clinicians.MSUB Assistant Professor of Low Brass John Roberts said he is excited for this year’s festival. Registration for the clinic for schools is still open. “I’m really excited about Katisse and our lineup of clinicians we have for this year’s festival,” Roberts said. “It’s going to give students a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot and have a great time.” Last year, roughly 900 people came to the festival and Roberts anticipates turn-out to be at least that many. He’s optimistic the concert will sell out as well. The evening show, from 7-9 p.m., January 27, at Petro Theater on the University campus will feature the MSUB Jazz Ensemble and Buckingham. Tickets are $10 and available here. Students, staff and faculty with a valid ID are free. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

Now, a new generation of talented actors/singers/dancers meets a new generation of theatregoers to explore the soaring sounds and pulsating rhythms of this coming-of-age disco fantasy. Based on Nik Cohn’s 1975 New York Magazine article “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night” and Norman Wexler’s hit 1977 film Saturday Night Fever, Saturday Night Fever - The Musical features almost all of the songs from the original movie sound track. The album remained 24 weeks on the top of the US album charts and stayed on the charts until March 1980. In 1979 it won a Grammy as Album of the Year. In 2003 it reached # 131 of Rolling Stone’s “500 best albums of all time.” Saturday Night Fever-The Musical, presented by NorthCore Productions and 2 Luck Concepts LLC, is directed by Marcia Kash with choreography by Marc Kimelman and music direction by Steve Thomas. ABT’s Broadway Series is presented by U.S. Bank. This performance is sponsored by Intermountain Distributing, KULR 8 and MY105.9. Tickets, $50, $45, $35 and $26 for students with valid I.D., are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of 3rd Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406-256-6052 (box office hours are Monday through Saturday, 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m. ) and/or online at www.albertabairtheater.org.

Amy Grant performs at Alberta Bair Theater February 1 at 7:30 p.m.

About 500 tickets remain for multi-Grammy Award Winner Amy Grant’s performance on Wednesday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Alberta Bair Theater. Grant has built a long, successful career on music that matters. Ever since she burst on to the scene as a fresh-faced teenager bringing contemporary Christian music to the forefront of American culture, the Nashville native gained a reputation for creating potent songs that examined life’s complexities with an open heart and keen eye. She became the first artist in Christian music to have a platinum record and went on to become a pop music crossover sensation—her musical gifts transcending genre boundaries to make her a household name. Grant has earned six Grammy Awards and numerous Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, as well as three multi-platinum albums, six platinum albums and four gold albums. She’s achieved 10 Top 40 pop singles and placed 17 hits on the Top 40 Adult Contemporary chart as well as scoring numerous hits on the contemporary Christian charts. NILE scholarship application now available The Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) Scholarship Program funded by the NILE Foundation, is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year. Since 1990, the NILE has awarded scholarships to deserving FFA and 4-H students that have been actively involved in their respective programs and communities, excelled in the classroom, and participated in NILE events. "Promoting the future of agriculture through the support of youth via scholarships is a long standing tradition of NILE." says Jennifer Boka, General Manager of the NILE. "Educating today's youth to be tomorrows ag proponents is crucial to the entire world and we are NILE are proud to support and embrace the future of agriculture." Similar to previous years, the NILE Scholarship

Committee will be awarding three levels of scholarships. The first level will be the one-time scholarship awarded to high school seniors, similar to what the NILE has always done. The second level of scholarships offered will also be a one-time grant, for students already enrolled in College or a Vo-Tech school. Finally, the third level, which will offer the greatest scholarship amount, will be a rolling scholarship. The rolling scholarships will be offered to a select group of High School Seniors who will have the opportunity to renew the scholarship yearly, up to four years of their secondary education. Recipients of rolling scholarships will be chosen from the pool of applicants that are current seniors in High School. Each year the NILE touches the lives of nearly 10,000 youth through its many programs, events,

"live" animal scholarships, and college scholarships. Every year the NILE provides over $55,000 in cash and live animal scholarships. The NILE Foundation was established in 2009 as a supporting arm of the NILE organization, which is dedicated to the promotion of livestock, agriculture education, and respect for the western culture. Scholarship applications and guidelines can be found on the NILE's website, or by contacting the NILE Office at 406-256-2495. Applications must be submitted to the NILE Office by March 1, 2017 at 5 p.m.. Applications incomplete or late will not be considered. Scholarships will be awarded and announced in early April 2017.

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
