The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale presents Northern Lights, featuring international violinist, Simone Porter. BILLINGS - The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale’s (BSO&C) fourth season concert, Northern Lights is Saturday, February 4th at the Alberta Bair Theater. Doors open at 6:30 pm with Concert Cues beginning at 6:45 pm. The BSO&C welcomes international violinist, Simone Porter, who will play Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. The show begins at 7:30 pm. simoneporterViolinist Simone Porter has been recognized as an emerging artist of impassioned energy, musical integrity, and vibrant sound. After performing last season with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the LA Times declared Ms. Porter “on the cusp of a major career.” Elsewhere her performances have been described as “Bold” (Seattle Times), and “virtuosic” (London Times). At 19 years of age, Ms. Porter has already appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Huston Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Ms. Porter made her professional solo debut at age 10 with the Seattle Symphony and her international debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra age 13. Ms. Porter will be holding a Master Class for area violin students Friday, February 3rd at the Alberta Bair Theater. The students participating are: Ana Strong, playing Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saens, Claire Griffin, playing a Mendelssohn piece, Sophia Barthel, playing Dmitri Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto (1st Movement), and Mary Botz, playing Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto (1st Movement). Master Classes are open to the public to watch. Please use the side entrance at the ABT if you plan to attend. The BSO&C will feature three outstanding pieces by three equally influential composers: Russell Peck, Felix Mendelssohn, and Jean Sibelius. Written by Detroit born composer, Russell Peck (1945-2009), Don’t Tread on Me is a rock-influenced piece that focuses on the strings, blending his love of Mozart and Motown. This is the first performance of Don’t Tread on Me by the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale. Mendelssohn’s (1809-1847) Violin Concerto is arguably the most popular and widely played violin concerto. There is a history of child prodigies performing the piece. It was written for his childhood friend, Ferdinand David. It took 5 years to complete. In 1845 it made its debut performance in Leipzig, Germany with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. It has since become a must have in any young violinist repertoire. Mendelssohn passed away 2 years after completing the Violin Concerto, making this his last Orchestra composition. He was 38 years old. This is the fourth performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto by the BSO&C. The last performance was in 1998. Sibelius’ Second Symphony was written during the turn of the 19th and 20th Century, during turbulent political times in Finland. It was first performed in Helsinki, Finland by the Helsinki Philharmonic Society on March 8, 1902. It is not clear if Sibelius had a nationalistic agenda for writing this piece. When asked, he would only say it is “a struggle between death and salvation.” This is the third performance of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 by the BSO&C. The last was in 2004. Northern Lights is brought to you by: Rockwood Brown, Scott & Deb Brown, and MorningStar Senior Living. Guest Artist is brought to you by, David & Cindy Hummel. The 2016-2017 season is proudly sponsored by The Oakland Company. Tickets for Northern Lights are available at the Billings Symphony Box Office by calling 252-3610, or online at billingssymphony.org. THE MAGIC BEANS, CYCLES

The Magic Beans are a band with a passion for music that is as infectious as their songs, both of which have gained them national notoriety in a short time. Much like the tastes of modern music lovers, the band’s sound isn’t confined to one-genre. The Beans strive to be as inclusive as possible by skirting the lines between many genres within their unique sound. The band’s infectious stage chemistry is very inclusive of the audience, resulting in a close knit fanbase around the group dubbed, “Team Bean.” The group uses no pre-recorded tracks or samples in favor of a more traditional approach to music; original songwriting and continually pushing the envelope are what have set this group apart. Whether you like ballads or bangers, the Beans have something you will enjoy. Seamlessly combining clever songwriting with modern dance music, The Magic Beans strive to be original and expressive in a world where everything’s been done. The Magic Beans have shared bills and stages with diverse acts like Umphrey’s Mcgee, Disco Biscuits, STS9, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, The New Mastersounds, The New Deal, Particle, Eliot Lipp, Greensky Bluegrass, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Boombox, Bluetech, EOTO, Split Lip Rayfield, the Motet, GRIZ, Papadosio, Juno What, The Werks to name a few. Montana Repertory Theatre takes pride in producing plays from the great American canon -- stories that reveal the American character and hold a mirror to our mutual longings, dreams, defeats, and victories. In this vein, Montana Rep has produced the works of Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Wendy Wasserstein, and Harper Lee, among others. Over the years Montana Rep has presented four plays by America’s master of comedy, Neil Simon: The Sunshine Boys, Broadway Bound, Biloxi Blues, and Lost in Yonkers, all with great success. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that for their fiftieth anniversary season they once again turn to Mr. Simon and produce the play that put him on the map over fifty years ago: Barefoot in the Park. This hilarious, poignant story features Corie and Paul Bratter, a newlywed couple. For their first home, they live in an apartment on the top floor of a walk-up brownstone in New York City. NEA Big Read highlight of upcoming MSUB Library Lecture Series Billings to read and celebrate “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” by Carson McCuller during month long event featuring music, films and lecture

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — In partnership with the Montana State University Billings Library, The Writer’s Voice will introduce a new generation of Montanans to the writing of Carson McCullers through a dynamic collaboration among the university faculty and students, Billings Public Library, and area high schools. The program is also supported by Humanities Montana. The Writer’s Voice, received an $11,900 grant to host the NEA Big Read in Billings this spring. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Writer’s Voice is one of only 77 nonprofit organizations to receive a NEA Big Read grant. The NEA Big Read in Billings will focus on Carson McCullers’s book “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” It is hard to believe that “The Heart is Lonely Hunter,” was the first book of a twenty-three-year-old author, said MSUB Library Interim Director Megan Thomas. “This tragic, small-town drama is so ambitious in its scope-presenting five radically different characters whose troubled lives intersect in the Depression-era South. It always seems like the work of a master storyteller,” said Thomas The public is invited to pick up a free copy of the book at the MSUB Library and sign up for a discussion group, sessions begin March 1. Thomas indicated that the NEA Big Read events will be one of two lecture series sponsored by the MSUB Library. The second lecture series will begin in late March and feature four events around Democracy. “The library’s participation with Big Read was made possible by The Writer’s Voice and the grant it received and we are excited to take part,” Thomas said. Managed by Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. The program supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. The Writer’s Voice has been a literary presenter since 1991 and has spent 25 years developing and expanding literary programs for youth and adults. Formerly a program of the Billings Family YMCA, The Writer’s Voice now operates as an independent project of the Billings Cultural Partners. For more information about The Writer’s Voice contact Corby Skinner at 294-2390 or Corby@ skinnerbenoit.com. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Quilt Shops BACKDOOR QUILT SHOPPE Famous for its “quilting bee” atmosphere. That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter. Their way of making quilting as fun for you as it is for them includes offering classes (one day or a series), helping you with fabric selections and quilting techniques, and offering open sewing times. Here for an extended stay? Come in and quilt! They have a huge selection of quilting supplies and sell finished quilts, too. They have masculine, Western and other theme favorites also. Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop, Batiks, and Anita Godesign Embroidery Cards. Brother and Nolting Long Arm Dealer, sewing machine repairs and antique sewing machine sales round out their offerings. Open Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. 406-655-1001. Located next to West End Perkins behind King Town Center at 712 Carbon Street. “Come in and let us share our love of quilting with you!” www.backdoorquiltshoppe. com

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center. Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
