Billings, MT-February 25, 2017-Last performed in January 2003- NOVA Center for the Performing Arts and Rimrock Opera Foundation are excited to produce The Magic Flute as their mainstage opera on February 25, 2017 at Alberta Bair Theater.Performed over 100 times its premiere year, The Magic Flute is a tender, heart-warming, and amusing opera that gives center stage to the interwoven relationships between the lead characters. The Rimrock Opera Foundation and NOVA Center for the Performing Arts will take the audience on an adventurous journey, exploring life’s affirming message that love conquers all in Mozart’s last opera. The Magic Flute will be directed by Daniel Helfgot (Don Giovanni 2002), conducted by Barbara Day Turner, and feature

a well-known cast including Ross Coughanour, Kristy Dallas, Kelly Deiling, Marisa Getchell, Lukas Graf, Amy Logan, Kate Meyer, Brooke Moncada, William Mouat, Daren Small, Karla Stricker, Janie Sutton, Mandi Taylor, Justin Ward, as well as a seasoned chorus. Major Exhibition of Native American Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s Art at the YAM (Billings, Montana) – A major exhibition of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s diverse art will open with an evening reception at the Yellowstone Art Museum on Thursday, March 23, 2017. The exhibition will be on view in Billings through July 16, 2017, and will travel subsequently to Missoula, Montana, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jaune Quick-to-See Smith is one of the U.S.’s finest Indigenous talents. This timely and exciting exhibition will be the first solo exhibition of the artist’s work in her native state of Montana in a generation. Smith is a mature, late-career artist with extraordinary aesthetic, intellectual, and curatorial achievements to her credit. She mines her cross-cultural experience and Salish-Kootenai identity, and spans cultures with powerful, idiosyncratic results of high aesthetic caliber. Few Native artists have worked with such grace, inventiveness, and aesthetic success between cultures and art worlds. Smith has an international reputation with a strong, clear body of work; she has earned her leading standing among women artists and Native American artists while simultaneously aligning both of these often still marginalized groups more closely with the mainstream art world. The YAM’s exhibition will examine themes that perennially recur in her work, including conflict, compassion, peace, the cycle of life, irony, and identity. Smith has always operated on a cusp—culturally, temporally, aesthetically, and from a gender perspective—which gives her work an attention-getting vitality, originality, and relevance. Her role in the shift toward deepening respect for Native American contemporary art in its own right has been significant. She describes herself as a “cultural arts worker.” Smith also has credits as a curator, writer, speaker, and leader in the arts. Jaune Quick-to-See Smith has over a hundred solo exhibitions in 28 states to her credit, from California to Florida and from the northern Plains states to Texas. She has also exhibited internationally and in dozens more group exhibitions worldwide. In addition to holdings in museums in Montana (the Yellowstone Art Museum and Missoula Art Museum in particular), her work is held in the permanent collections of such notable institutions as the Albuquerque Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Detroit Institute, Denver Art Museum, Indianapolis Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Walker Art Center. Smith has four honorary Ph.D.s and sixteen major awards, including National Academician, New Mexico Governor’s Award, a lifetime achievement award from the Woodson Foundation, a Wallace Stegner Award, and a Joan Mitchell Foundation award. Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: In the Footsteps of My Ancestors is part of the Yellowstone Art Museum’s multi-year Montana Masters exhibition series. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog with contributions by notable essayists Lowery Stokes Sims and Gail Tremblay. The exhibition includes 44 paintings and works on paper from the artist’s collection, the Yellowstone Art Museum’s permanent collection, and other private collectors. Both exhibition and catalog are supported in part by grants from the Institute of Museum and

Library Services, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, and numerous private sponsors.

Russian National Ballet Theatre dances The Sleeping Beauty BILLINGS, MT — What could be more perfect than a fairytale ending on Valentine’s Day? As part of Alberta Bair Theater’s 2016-17 First Interstate Bank Fox Series, the Russian National Ballet Theatre performs The Sleeping Beauty at ABT on Tuesday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. The Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipa's career, is often considered the finest achievement of Classical ballet. It is a grandiose, refined blending of expressive dance pantomime and ballet choreography in a lavish theatrical setting. Tchaikovsky was delighted to write the music for this ballet based on Charles Perrault's well-known fairy tale about a baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, who is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy when she declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The fairy tale—with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor—lends itself perfectly to the three act ballet that was Petipa's pride.

PLAY. Five southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other lives. Spanning thirty-three years, their lives unfold and these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the challenges that life flings at them. THE TRIBUTE is the “best Beatles tribute on Earth.” Fans and critics alike agree on Mark Benson as John Lennon, Mac Ruffing as Paul McCartney, Tom Work as George Harrison, and Bobby Potter as Ringo Starr has perfected the energy and excitement of a live Beatles performance. Like actors, these musicians cast a spell as they step into character before your very eyes. For over 29 years, this group of performers has successfully recreated every sensation of being at a Beatles concert circa 1964 through 1966—from wardrobe to hairstyle, with Liverpool accents, singing nuances, and vintage instruments. The 5th race of Town Series will take place on Friday, February 10, 2017. After party and awards to be held in downtown Red Lodge at The Bull ‘N Bear Saloon. Party starts at 5 p.m., awards at 6 p.m. Town Series is a Red Lodge Mountain community ski/snowboard racing league that encourages participation from contestants of all ages and skill levels. Each race of the series is followed by an awards party at local restaurant or bar, with prizes going to 1st and 2nd place in each division. The Beer Sponsor, Big Sky Brewing Co., provides one free pitcher of beer to each registrant, and the grand prize – a pair of 2017 Atomic Bent Chetler Powder Skis – are given away to a random contestant at the end of the season. The 1st race of Town Series will take place on Friday, January 13, 2017. MHSA sanctioned one class of wrestling in 1956 for all competing schools. Capitalizing on the initial success of his debut EP, Guthrie recorded and released his second EP “Spirit of the Elk” with producer Stuart Mathis (The Wallflowers, Lucinda Williams). Following his second release, he recruited his longtime friends and musicians John Ogelby (drums), Will Honaker (bass, keys) and John McNally (guitar) to join the band. Their musical pairing has since been compared to something as strong and pure as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The Irish Rovers Final World Tour Makes a Stop at Alberta Bair Theater on Friday, February 17 BILLINGS, MT —About 600 tickets remain for The Irish Rover’s performance, part of their final world tour, at Alberta Bair Theater on Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. Fans can expect their early hits (“Black Velvet Band,” “The Unicorn,” “ Whisky on a Sunday,” and “Wasn't That A Party”), rollicking Jigs and Reels, plus hilarious stories from their years on the road. The Celtic super-band comprised of Irish emigrants was founded in Canada but first became known on American television in the 1960s. As guests on shows like The Tonight Show, The Smothers Brothers Show, Mike Douglas Show, The Virginian, The Dating Game (founder George Millar actually won the date), they gained experience before hosting their first of three international television series, The Irish Rovers Show, for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Over the next 20 years they became staples of the world music scene with two more international TV series and performing at five World Expos. More recently they’ve produced the television specials The Irish Rovers Home in Ireland and The Irish Rovers Christmas, plus they’ve gone viral with Drunken Sailor. The days of long tours are coming to an end for these Irish lads as they complete one last world tour. After this tour, they will rove again only for special events, festivals and longer stays. About The Alex Nauman: Raised in Wyoming's Bighorn Basin, Alex began studying guitar with legendary guitarist Jeff Troxel at a very early age. After graduating from Riverside High School in Basin, he attended Northwest College in Powell, WY where he continued studying guitar and shared the stage with such luminaries as Ronnie Bedford, Chris Vadala, Darren Kramer, the Horn Heads (see Prince), and many others. A grueling three-year stint in the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Studies program yielded Alex his first Bachelor's degree and gave him the chance to perfect his craft. During his stay in Colorado, he won numerous soloist awards at the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival and was awarded the Walt Francis Jazz Award for outstanding graduating senior. In 2014 Alex joined the staff of Rocky Mountain College as professor of guitar. Alex currently teaches guitar, bass, and banjo at Allied Music in Billings, MT as well as maintaining an active performance schedule throughout the West.

NEA Big Read highlight of upcoming MSUB Library Lecture Series Billings to read and celebrate “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” by Carson McCuller during month long event featuring music, films and lecture

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — In partnership with the Montana State University Billings Library, The Writer’s Voice will introduce a new generation of Montanans to the writing of Carson McCullers through a dynamic collaboration among the university faculty and students, Billings Public Library, and area high schools. The program is also supported by Humanities Montana. The Writer’s Voice, received an $11,900 grant to host the NEA Big Read in Billings this spring. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Writer’s Voice is one of only 77 nonprofit organizations to receive a NEA Big Read grant. The NEA Big Read in Billings will focus on Carson McCullers’s book “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” It is hard to believe that “The Heart is Lonely Hunter,” was the first book of a twenty-three-year-old author, said MSUB Library Interim Director Megan Thomas. “This tragic, small-town drama is so ambitious in its scope-presenting five radically different characters whose troubled lives intersect in the Depression-era South. It always seems like the work of a master storyteller,” said Thomas The public is invited to pick up a free copy of the book at the MSUB Library and sign up for a discussion group, sessions begin March 1. Thomas indicated that the NEA Big Read events will be one of two lecture series sponsored by the MSUB Library. The second lecture series will begin in late March and feature four events around Democracy. “The library’s participation with Big Read was made possible by The Writer’s Voice and the grant it received and we are excited to take part,” Thomas said. Managed by Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. The program supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. The Writer’s Voice has been a literary presenter since 1991 and has spent 25 years developing and expanding literary programs for youth and adults. Formerly a program of the Billings Family YMCA, The Writer’s Voice now operates as an independent project of the Billings Cultural Partners.
