NOVA CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS TO PRODUCE MOZART’S THE MAGIC FLUTE! Billings, MT-February 25, 2017-Last performed in January 2003- NOVA Center for the Performing Arts and Rimrock Opera Foundation are excited to produce The Magic Flute as their mainstage opera on February 25, 2017 at Alberta Bair Theater.Performed over 100 times its premiere year, The Magic Flute is a tender, heart-warming, and amusing opera that gives center stage to the interwoven relationships between the lead characters. The Rimrock Opera Foundation and NOVA Center for the Performing Arts will take the audience on an adventurous journey, exploring life’s affirming message that love conquers all in Mozart’s last opera. The Magic Flute will be directed by Daniel Helfgot (Don Giovanni 2002), conducted by Barbara Day Turner, and feature

a well-known cast including Ross Coughanour, Kristy Dallas, Kelly Deiling, Marisa Getchell, Lukas Graf, Amy Logan, Kate Meyer, Brooke Moncada, William Mouat, Daren Small, Karla Stricker, Janie Sutton, Mandi Taylor, Justin Ward, as well as a seasoned chorus. The Magic Flute will be sung in its original German with spoken English dialogue. Exploration of Montana’s one-room schools In the early 1990s there were nearly 200,000 one-room schoolhouses scattered across the rural United States. Today, fewer than 200 remain. Montana boasts more of these intimate education centers than any other state, with approximately 60. Those schools are the subject of the upcoming exhibition “Chasing Time” at Montana State University Billings Northcutt Steele Gallery. The exhibition opens February 16 and remains on view through March 30. In 2013 and 2014, Missoula photographer Chaput de Saintonge and Associate Professor of Photojournalism at University of Montana Keith Graham teamed up to visit and document all of Montana’s remaining one-room schools. “The result of their labors is a moving, revealing photo-essay,” said Leanne Gilbertson, gallery director. Chasing Time,” is comprised of roughly 30 photographs selected from more than 200 images the duo took during their travels. Each of the thoughtfully composed photographs captures candid, poignant details of Montana’s historic schools. “Alone each is a testament to the uniqueness of each individual teaching and learning in these schools,” said Gilbertson. “Together the photographs suggest common, human themes that might unite the dispersed experiences had in the one-room schools serving remote populations across our state and our nation.” Chaput de Saintonge founded Missoula’s Rocky Mountain School of Photography with his wife Jeanne in 1989. He has been teaching photography for over 40 years. This exhibition is sponsored by the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association and supported in part by the Montana Arts Council, the Coal Tax Trust Fund for Cultural and Aesthetic Projects, and the National Endowment for the Arts. While the show opens February 16, the public is invited to attend

free, special exhibition events in late March. At 5 p.m., March 23 there will be a catered reception for the exhibition, followed by a presentation at 6:30 p.m. that evening by Chaput de Saintonge. The hour-long overview of the photo-essay project takes place in LI148, the lecture hall next to the gallery. At 10:30 a.m., March 24, Chaput de Saintonge will also offer a free presentation on recent trends in digital photographic equipment. It takes place in the lecture hall next to the gallery. The presentation is open to the public and no reservations are necessary. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the University campus and is open Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. MATE SHOW, HOME & HEALTH EXPO

The Annual Montana Agri-Trade Exposition (MATE) is the largest agricultural trade show event of the year in Montana. This show is held in conjunction with the Home & Health Expo. With over 125,000 square feet of exhibit space and over 14,000 attendees, the Montana Agri-Trade Exposition (MATE Show) and the Home & Health Expo is the largest agricultural trade show event of the year in Montana. The MATE exhibits include large machinery and seed and fertilizer companies. Cattlemen will find handling equipment. Farmers will find on display a variety of cultivating and planting equipment, tractors, rakes, beet diggers and more. Also located outside in front of the Expo Center a bullpen preview. The Home & Health Expo offers a nice compliment to any farm and ranch operation. These shows take care of your basic household needs as well as your health. RED LODGE MOUNTAIN TOWN SERIES

The 6th and final race of Town Series will take place on Friday, February 17, 2017. After party and awards to be held at the Pizza Co. in downtown Red Lodge. Party starts at 5, awards at 6. Town Series is a Red Lodge Mountain community ski/snowboard racing league that encourages participation from contestants of all ages and skill levels. Each race of the series is followed by an awards party at local restaurant or bar, with prizes going to 1st and 2nd place in each division. The Beer Sponsor, Big Sky Brewing Co., provides one free pitcher of beer to each registrant, and the grand prize – a pair of 2017 Atomic Bent Chetler Powder Skis – are given away to a random contestant at the end of the season. The 1st race of Town Series will take place on Friday, January 13, 2017. The race will be held on Bobcat, and all racers need to take their runs between 10 a.m. and 2. After party and awards to be held in downtown Red Lodge. Party starts at 5, awards at 6.

41st year of the Montana Agri-Trade Exposition populates Billings with the latest in farming and ranching equipment and services Billings, MT - February 16-18, 2017 will be the 41st year of the Montana Agri-Trade Exposition (MATE), the largest Agriculture Trade Show in the region. The three-day event has consistently recorded attendance of over 14,000 people. Over 500 booths display trusted equipment and the latest technology for farming and ranching. Doors open at 10 a.m. every day, closing at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday. Free tickets are available at First Interstate Banks, the NILE office or at any of the vendor's locations. Without a ticket admission costs $7. For the chance to win one of the three grand prizes the back of tickets need to be filled out and then placed in the drawing drums. This year's grand prizes are a zero-turn lawn mower from John Deere, hearing aid set from the Hearing Aid Institute, and one ton of SweetPro tubs from Agri-Best Feeds. MetraPark hosts the MATE, filling the approximate 125,000 square feet of the Montana Pavilion and Expo Center with booths. Booths with products or services related to the home and or health can be found in the Montana Pavilion. Ag products and services fill the Expo Center, as well as outside-weather permitting. Various food vendors are scattered throughout the show. Bulls are on display under the awning of the Expo Center for the MATE Bull Pen Preview. Cattle producers bring in bulls to sell and to promote their upcoming bull sales. More pens than ever before were sold this year, making the Bull Pen Preview a great opportunity to see some high quality livestock. Educational opportunities at the MATE come informally and formally. Attendees can learn lots from vendors as they browse the booths, or they can take notes during formal

presentations in the MATE Theater. Eight different classes are scheduled over the course of Thursday and Friday. Since 1976 the MATE has been held the third week of February. The Irish Rovers Final World Tour Makes a Stop at Alberta Bair Theater on Friday, February 17 BILLINGS, MT —About 600 tickets remain for The Irish Rover’s performance, part of their final world tour, at Alberta Bair Theater on Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. Fans can expect their early hits (“Black Velvet Band,” “The Unicorn,” “ Whisky on a Sunday,” and “Wasn't That A Party”), rollicking Jigs and Reels, plus hilarious stories from their years on the road. The Celtic super-band comprised of Irish emigrants was founded in Canada but first became known on American television in the 1960s. As guests on shows like The Tonight Show, The Smothers Brothers Show, Mike Douglas Show, The Virginian, The Dating Game (founder George Millar actually won the date), they gained experience before hosting their first of three international television series, The Irish Rovers Show, for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. About The Alex Nauman: Raised in Wyoming's Bighorn Basin, Alex began studying guitar with legendary guitarist Jeff Troxel at a very early age. After graduating from Riverside High School in Basin, he attended Northwest College in Powell, WY where he continued studying guitar and shared the stage with such luminaries as Ronnie Bedford, Chris Vadala, Darren Kramer, the Horn Heads (see Prince), and many others. A grueling three-year stint in the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Studies program yielded Alex his first Bachelor's degree and gave him the chance to perfect his craft. During his stay in Colorado, he won numerous soloist awards at the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival and was awarded the Walt Francis Jazz Award for outstanding graduating senior. In 2014 Alex joined the staff of Rocky Mountain College as professor of guitar. Alex currently teaches guitar, bass, and banjo at Allied Music in Billings, MT as well as maintaining an active performance schedule throughout the West.

NEA Big Read highlight of upcoming MSUB Library Lecture Series Billings to read and celebrate “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” by Carson McCuller during month long event featuring music, films and lecture

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — In partnership with the Montana State University Billings Library, The Writer’s Voice will introduce a new generation of Montanans to the writing of Carson McCullers through a dynamic collaboration among the university faculty and students, Billings Public Library, and area high schools. The program is also supported by Humanities Montana. The Writer’s Voice, received an $11,900 grant to host the NEA Big Read in Billings this spring. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Writer’s Voice is one of only 77 nonprofit organizations to receive a NEA Big Read grant. The NEA Big Read in Billings will focus on Carson McCullers’s book “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” It is hard to believe that “The Heart is Lonely Hunter,” was the first book of a twenty-three-year-old author, said MSUB Library Interim Director Megan Thomas. “This tragic, small-town drama is so ambitious in its scope-presenting five radically different characters whose troubled lives intersect in the Depression-era South. It always seems like the work of a master storyteller,” said Thomas The public is invited to pick up a free copy of the book at the MSUB Library and sign up for a discussion group, sessions begin March 1. Thomas indicated that the NEA Big Read events will be one of two lecture series sponsored by the MSUB Library. The second lecture series will begin in late March and feature four events around Democracy. “The library’s participation with Big Read was made possible by The Writer’s Voice and the grant it received and we are excited to take part,” Thomas said. Managed by Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. The program supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. The Writer’s Voice has been a literary presenter since 1991 and has spent 25 years developing and expanding literary programs for youth and adults. Formerly a program of the Billings Family YMCA, The Writer’s Voice now operates as an independent project of the Billings Cultural Partners. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
