Exploration of Montana’s one-room schools In the early 1990s there were nearly 200,000 one-room schoolhouses scattered across the rural United States. Today, fewer than 200 remain. Montana boasts more of these intimate education centers than any other state, with approximately 60. Those schools are the subject of the upcoming exhibition “Chasing Time” at Montana State University Billings Northcutt Steele Gallery. The exhibition opens February 16 and remains on view through March 30. In 2013 and 2014, Missoula photographer Chaput de Saintonge and Associate Professor of Photojournalism at University of Montana Keith Graham teamed up to visit and document all of Montana’s remaining one-room schools. “The result of their labors is a moving, revealing photo-essay,” said Leanne Gilbertson, gallery director. Chasing Time,” is comprised of roughly 30 photographs selected from more than 200 images the duo took during their travels. Each of the thoughtfully composed photographs captures candid, poignant details of Montana’s historic schools. “Alone each is a testament to the uniqueness of each individual teaching and learning in these schools,” said Gilbertson. “Together the photographs suggest common, human themes that might unite the dispersed experiences had in the one-room schools serving remote populations across our state and our nation.” Chaput de Saintonge founded Missoula’s Rocky Mountain School of Photography with his wife Jeanne in 1989. He has been teaching photography for over 40 years. This exhibition is sponsored by the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association and supported in part by the Montana Arts Council, the Coal Tax Trust Fund for Cultural and Aesthetic Projects, and the National Endowment for the Arts. While the show opens February 16, the public is invited to attend
free, special exhibition events in late March. At 5 p.m., March 23 there will be a catered reception for the exhibition, followed by a presentation at 6:30 p.m. that evening by Chaput de Saintonge. The hour-long overview of the photo-essay project takes place in LI148, the lecture hall next to the gallery. At 10:30 a.m., March 24, Chaput de Saintonge will also offer a free presentation on recent trends in digital photographic equipment. It takes place in the lecture hall next to the gallery. The presentation is open to the public and no reservations are necessary. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the University campus and is open Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. The gallery is supported in part by student fees governed by the Associated Students of MSUB. For more information about this exhibition and related activities, visit the gallery on Facebook.

Nonpoint only becomes fiercer with each subsequent album. Their ninth full-length offering and first for Spinefarm Records, The Poison Red, is no exception either. groove, and the vocals rapidly recount stories of pain and perseverance. LUCERO, ESME PATTERSON
You could say we were one of the lucky ones, starting this band in April of ’98 without a clue as to what we were doing. We were getting tired of the steady punk rock and metal diet and we wanted to try our hand at country songs, or do our best Tom Waits/ Pogues impersonation. The trick there was that we couldn’t really play our instruments! I had never played guitar before and Ben Nichols (lead singer, guitar) had only played bass in other bands. Finding

Roy Berry (drummer) and John C. Stubblefield (bassist) solidified the lineup and being hidden away in Memphis allowed us to the woodshed, experiment with different sounds and create one that was ours alone. Eventually, we got out of town and playing 250 shows year not only made us tight as a band but as a family as well. We are still one of the few bands out there with the original line up from almost the beginning, and it shows. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave N., Billings 8 p.m. $24 FEB. 25, 26

Guthrie Brown (Dawes Afterparty)
Guthrie Brown a Nashville transplant by way of “old Montana” began playing the guitar at age six. By the age of seventeen, he journeyed to Nashville to pursue the dream of being a professional songwriter, recording & performing artist. After settling in Music City, he recorded and produced his first self-titled EP, which got the attention of Nashville’s premier independent radio station, WRLT Lightning 100. Capitalizing on the initial success of his debut EP, Guthrie recorded and released his second EP “Spirit of the Elk” with producer Stuart Mathis (The Wallflowers, Lucinda Williams). Following his second release, he recruited his longtime friends and musicians John Ogelby (drums), Will Honaker (bass, keys) and John McNally (guitar) to join the band. Their musical pairing has since been compared to something as strong and pure as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Since the release of “Spirit of the Elk”, Guthrie and his band of brothers, have continued their regiment of non-stop touring including coveted spots opening for Jonny Lang, Willie Nelson, Robert Randolf, and Bears Den and festivals such as Gasparilla, and CMJ Fest, just to name a few. In the summer of 2016, Guthrie signed his first publishing deal with BMG. He will spend the second half of the year touring and recording with multiGrammy Award winning producer,

It was originally a gun/antique show the first couple years. Antiques became the focus and it quickly became Montana’s largest antique show at the Shrine Auditorium in Billings. He also created and promoted other antique shows around Montana and Wyoming. After his passing in 1982 Fran Huff his wife continued with the Billings show at MetraPark until their son Dan Huff took over the family business in 1995 moving into the Montana Pavilion Building at MetraPark. The show is a family affair and the dealers are family as well, some of which have been coming to the show since the beginning. Dan Huff said “It’s like a family reunion when we get together we catch up on life and adventures along with creating
a place for the public to come buy quality antiques and collectables, it’s fun.” Find that treasure from your past or the toy you had as a kid. You can also just browse and visit with the dealers and learn something about history or find that book that you have been searching years for. So come have some fun and make some new friends.
Montana Women’s Run opens registration for May 13 run Montana Women’s Run has opened registration for the 36th annual run in downtown Billings. The 2-mile and 5- mile runs will be held on May 13, 2017. This Montana Women’s Run expects more than 9,000 athletes to participate in the yearly event. To best accommodate the athletes, to ensure the safest experience and to help every woman achieve her own personal goal, start times will be one hour apart. The 5 mile race will start first at 8:00 am, followed by the 2 mile race at 9:00 am. This time difference helps decrease congestion along the course and separate the 5 mile and 2 mile finishers. In addition to the Women’s Run, the Kids’ Run for kids aged 10 and under will be held on Tuesday, May 9 at the Rocky Mountain College. The goal of this event is to encourage active lifestyles for children. Every race time is rewarded and every runner wins! The Kick-Off Dinner and Women’s Health Expo will be May 12 at the Billings Food Bank, located at 2112 4th Avenue North. This evening is for runners, walkers and volunteers to enjoy the Health Expo, a delicious pasta dinner, presentation of the Cape and Tiara award and an inspirational presentation by the guest speaker. The Health Expo features interactive exhibits and presentations from which women can learn more about fitness, nutrition and better health.

The 2016 Montana Women’s Run proudly donated $101,000 to women’s health and fitness programs in the Billings community. Over the years, the Montana Women’s Run has donated over $1,065,523 to local organizations in our community. MSUB Accounting Club hosts free tax filing service Free tax preparation provided 11:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays through April 15 at the Student Union Building Montana State University Billings College of Business students have long provided volunteers to help with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provided by HRDC. This year, however, MSUB is hosting a VITA tax preparation site on the University campus, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays, in the Student Union Building until April 15. HRDC, located at 7 North 31st Street, is also a VITA site providing tax-filing services from noon to 8p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays, and noon to 6p.m. on Fridays, now through April 15. MSUB VITA Site Coordinator Scott Gorman is excited to bring this free service to the school. The program provides free income tax return preparation and electronic filing for individuals and families making less than $52,000 a year. Both state and federal tax returns are prepared by Internal Revenue Service trained and certified volunteers. “For a lot of individuals and households, getting your tax return is sometimes the most important check they’ll get,” Gorman said. “A lot of people use that money for necessities, like rent and food, and stretch their refund throughout the year.” Gorman, who is also the MSUB Accounting Club president, is confident the club will help prepare and file several hundred returns for the Billings community. “We’re hoping that as a club we can have 500 volunteer hours for Service Sting,” he said. Service Sting is a volunteer service sponsored by the MSUB Office for Community Involvement. In addition to working the MSUB VITA site on Saturdays, the club will chip in at the VITA HRDC site. HRDC is a private nonprofit Community Action Agency dedicated to the promotion of self-sufficiency and alleviation of poverty. Mary Beth Shay, VITA HRDC site coordinator, said the organization is grateful for the boost in volunteers. “We prepare a lot of returns and need all the help we can get,” she said. TIPPET RISE ART CENTER ANNOUNCES ITS SECOND CONCERT SEASON, JULY 7 - SEPTEMBER 16, 2017 Tippet Rise Art Center has released the details of its second concert season, July 7 - September 16, 2017. The Art Center, which opened in June 2016, is located on a 10,260-acre working ranch at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains, midway between Billings and Bozeman and north of Yellowstone National Park. Building on a successful inaugural year, Tippet Rise has added two weeks to its season of classical chamber music and recitals by renowned musicians who will travel to Fishtail from around the globe. In the spirit of Tippet Rise’s union of land, art, architecture and music, the season’s nine weeks of concerts will be performed both indoors and outdoors. The 150-seat Olivier Music Barn, the Art Center’s primary music venue, was designed and constructed by Laura Viklund of Gunnstock Timber Frames with acoustical design by Arup and Alban Bassuet and is inspired by the beautifully proportioned performance spaces for which Haydn and Mozart composed their works. Weather permitting, concerts will also take place at the open-air Domo, a 98-foot-long, 16-foot-tall, acoustically rich sculptural structure designed by Ensamble Studio. Pre-concert lectures will take place at the Tiara, a 100-seat acoustic shell without walls Organized under Artistic Advisor Charles Hamlen, the music season features new and returning artists, established soloists and rising stars, presenting works ranging in date from the early 18th century to the present. The full concert schedule is available on the Concert & Events page of the Art Center’s website, www.tippetrise.org. Season highlights include: A world premiere by composer Aaron Jay Kernis. Commissioned by Tippet Rise, it will be performed by pianist Pedja Muzijevic and cellist Matt Haimovitz. • The Tippet Rise debut of pianist Natasha Paremski in a solo performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, later joined by the Escher String Quartet, also making its Tippet Rise debut. • The return of pianist Yevgeny Sudbin. Hailed by England’s Daily Telegraph as “potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century,” Sudbin will perform works by Scriabin, Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Medtner. • Another Tippet Rise alum, the violinist Caroline Goulding, plays several concerts this season, including a three-part performance featuring Enescu’s Impressions from Childhood, Dvorak’s Romantic Pieces and Schumann’s Sonata in D minor No. 2. • Called “one of the great American pianists of her generation,” Anne-Marie McDermott returns to Tippet Rise, performing both as a soloist and with the internationally acclaimed St. Lawrence String Quartet. • Jenny Chen, who delighted Tippet Rise audiences in 2016, also returns, performing an ambitious program of works by Mozart, Chopin, Debussy and Liszt. • Jeffrey Kahane makes his first appearance at Tippet Rise with a diverse recital program as well as Schubert's Piano Quintet, “Trout,” with the Ariel Quartet and Xavier Foley, double bass. All concert tickets are priced at $10, with revenues dedicated to the Art Center’s education programs. Visits to Tippet Rise’s sculptures are free with prior registration. A limited number of tickets for performances go on sale

beginning March 1, 2017, with additional tickets being released for purchase on March 18 and May 26, 2017. “We are delighted to host a new season of classical music programming for our community, for Montana, and for visitors to the region from near and far,” said founders Cathy and Peter Halstead. “We look forward to another season where the land creates cosmic connections with music and from sculpture.” The recordings produced of each concert are as important an asset of Tippet Rise as the live performances. Tippet Rise pairs its extraordinary pianos and the acoustically optimized Olivier Music Barn with state-of-the-art recording technology. Recorded performances are added regularly to the Tippet Rise website and to the Art Center’s official YouTube channel. Tippet Rise Art Center opens to the public in late June, before the start of the music series, for daily visits on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with prior registration. Additions made to the Art Center’s trail system this winter will allow visitors to hike or bike to each of the sculptures on the ranch. Electric shuttles are also offered to guests on a regular schedule to each of the sculpture sites. For concert ticket holders, a barbecue is available for purchase before each evening’s performance, provided by Cordon Bleu-trained chef Nick Goldman and Chef Wendi Reed of Wild Flower Kitchen. Sandwiches, snacks, desserts, and drinks are also available for purchase during regular hours. A new permanent pavilion, also designed by Laura Viklund, is under construction adjacent to the Olivier Music Barn, where guests can enjoy food and refreshments during the 2017 concert and tour season. In addition to its classical music program, Tippet Rise Art Center comprises large-scale sculptures and other works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects. Many are site-specific commissions that aim to weave together the boundaries of art, nature, and architecture. Artworks set within the landscape include several sculptural structures by the innovative Ensamble Studio (Débora Mesa & Antón García-Abril), including Beartooth Portal, composed of two vertical rocklike forms, 29 feet tall, that lean together at the top; the similarly designed 26-foot-tall Inverted Portal; and the 98-foot-long, 16-foot-tall Domo. Tippet Rise is also home to two monumental works by the internationally renowned sculptor Mark di Suvero: Beethoven’s Quartet (2003, steel and stainless steel, 24 9/16 ft. x 30 ft. x 23 1/4 ft.) and Proverb (2002, painted Cor-ten steel, 60 ft x 17 11/16 ft. x 31 1/2 ft.); two site-specific works (Satellite No. 5: Pioneer, by Stephen Talasnik, and Daydreams by Patrick Dougherty); and two works by Alexander Calder on loan from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden: Two Discs (1965) and Stainless Stealer (1966).
Access and Tickets
Tippet Rise is open to visitors from late June to mid-September on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 6pm. Admission is free, but prior registration is required in order to enter the Art Center. Concerts are priced at $10, and are free for guests 18 and under. Tickets will go on sale on March 1, 2017, with additional tickets released for purchase on March 18 and May 26, 2017. For more information, please visit www.tippetrise.org

NEA Big Read highlight of upcoming MSUB Library Lecture Series Billings to read and celebrate “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” by Carson McCuller during month long event featuring music, films and lecture
MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — In partnership with the Montana State University Billings Library, The Writer’s Voice will introduce a new generation of Montanans to the writing of Carson McCullers through a dynamic collaboration among the university faculty and students, Billings Public Library, and area high schools. The program is also supported by Humanities Montana. The Writer’s Voice, received an $11,900 grant to host the NEA Big Read in Billings this spring. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Writer’s Voice is one of only 77 nonprofit organizations to receive a NEA Big Read grant. The NEA Big Read in Billings will focus on Carson McCullers’s book “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” It is hard to believe that “The Heart is Lonely Hunter,” was the first book of a twenty-three-year-old author, said MSUB Library Interim Director Megan Thomas. “This tragic, small-town drama is so ambitious in its scope-presenting five radically different characters whose troubled lives intersect in the Depression-era South. It always seems like the work of a master storyteller,” said Thomas The public is invited to pick up a free copy of the book at the MSUB Library and sign up for a discussion group, sessions begin March 1. Thomas indicated that the NEA Big Read events will be one of two lecture series sponsored by the MSUB Library. The second lecture series will begin in late March and feature four events around Democracy. “The library’s participation with Big Read was made possible by The Writer’s Voice and the grant it received and we are excited to take part,” Thomas said. Managed by Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. The program supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. The Writer’s Voice has been a literary presenter since 1991 and has spent 25 years developing and expanding literary programs for youth and adults. Formerly a program of the Billings Family YMCA, The Writer’s Voice now operates as an independent project of the Billings Cultural Partners. For more information about The Writer’s Voice contact Corby Skinner at 294-2390 or Corby@ skinnerbenoit.com. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Quilt Shops BACKDOOR QUILT SHOPPE Famous for its “quilting bee” atmosphere. That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter. Their way of making quilting as fun for you as it is for them includes offering classes (one day or a series), helping you with fabric selections and quilting techniques, and offering open sewing times. Here for an extended stay? Come in and quilt! They have a huge selection of quilting supplies and sell finished quilts, too. They have masculine, Western and other theme favorites also. Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop, Batiks, and Anita Godesign Embroidery Cards. Brother and Nolting Long Arm Dealer, sewing machine repairs and antique sewing machine sales round out their offerings. Open Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. 406-655-1001. Located next to West End Perkins behind King Town Center at 712 Carbon Street. “Come in and let us share our love of quilting with you!” www.backdoorquiltshoppe. com

Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were
killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.
Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone
River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full
of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the
roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
