Ever since their inception in 2005, Portland’s RED FANG have strived to write heavy, catchy music underlaid with subtle complexities. Founded by David Sullivan, Maurice Bryan Giles, Aaron Beam, and John Sherman, the band had a distinctive and fullyformed sound right from the start: a mix of compelling rock songwriting and party-hard metal euphoria that speaks to the headbanger, the hesher, and the music student alike. The band’s two-pronged vocal attack and knack for finding the sharpest hooks made sure that the music world caught on right away. Within just one year of RED FANG‘s first show, they were opening for genre stalwarts Big Business and The Melvins and soon began appearing at festivals including FYF, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Sasquatch Fest, and more. another by word of mouth. Folktales are also often used to teach a moral or lesson to children. There are several types of folktales: myths, legends, fairy tales, and marchens. Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters is an example of a marchen. Its characteristics include a magical Land or fantasy setting and involve an “underdog” who, with the help of magic, obtains a birthright. Generally, this underdog character is asked to complete impossible tasks, but through the help of magic, things end up as “happily ever after.” Recommended for grades K-6. Dirtwire
Dirtwire sits on the back porch of Americana’s future, conjuring up a whirlwind of sound using traditional instrumentation, world percussion, and electronic rhythms. Comprised of David Satori (Beats Antique), Evan Fraser (Hamsa Lila, Stellamara) and Mark Reveley ( Jed and Lucia), each performance brings both band and audience to a sonic crossroads of beats, bass, soundscapes, blues, bluegrass, country, African, Asian, Middle Eastern, South and Central American traditions. The result is a rebirth of Americana and a post-millennial psychedelic journey to down-home goodness. Horseshoes and Hand Grenades
In 2010, the five Wisconsinites that make up Horseshoes & Hand Grenades found themselves in a living room in the college town of Stevens Point, WI, holding acoustic instruments and enjoying a hodgepodge of fermented beverages. Music and revelry ensued that evening and, while many of the party guests eventually bid their goodbye well into the morning hours, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades wasn’t ready to let the get-together fade. Many years later, the music still hasn’t stopped and the party is still going strong, from the mountain west to the river towns of the Midwest that the quintet calls home, and all across America. Montana Women’s Run opens registration for May 13 run Montana Women’s Run has opened registration for the 36th annual run in downtown Billings. This evening is for runners, walkers and volunteers to enjoy the Health Expo, a delicious pasta dinner, presentation of the Cape and Tiara award and an inspirational presentation by the guest speaker. The Health Expo features interactive exhibits and presentations from which women can learn more about fitness, nutrition and better health.
Getting Started Clinics will be held on Monday evenings beginning on March 20 to help get in shape with instructor-led exercise and stretching techniques. These clinics are free and will take place at the Rocky Mountain College outdoor track and the Lockwood School track, beginning at 5:30 each Monday before the run. The 2016 Montana Women’s Run proudly donated $101,000 to women’s health and fitness programs in the Billings community. Over the years, the Montana Women’s Run has donated over $1,065,523 to local organizations in our community. Coming Home: The Northern Cheyenne Odyssey
March 1 – June 10 This exhibit focused on two bands of the Cheyenne, the Little Wolf Band and the Dull Knife Band and focuses on only a small piece of the Northern Cheyenne history. It begins in 1876 and continues through present day with the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. The exhibition is rare and unprecedented. It examines a most difficult and courageous time for the Northern Cheyenne people, the period from 1876 to 1884, and does so from the perspective of members of the Northern Cheyenne Nation. This exhibit is presented in loving memory of Northern Cheyenne historian, filmmaker, and exhibit curator, Rubie Sooktis.
The Art of Dick Ellis
March 1 - May 6 Wildlife and landscape artwork by artist Dick Ellis, retired Region 5 Supervisor, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. The showing presents a broad spectrum of subject matter and techniques, focusing primarily on landscapes and wildlife pieces with a smattering of portraiture and still-life paintings. The art is rendered in soft pastel, pencil, and pen-and-ink, with a number of pieces being bronze sculptures. An early interest in the outdoors, western history, and wildlife led the artist to a career with the Montanan Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks where he retired as Regional Supervisor in 1999. During his time with FWP, art remained a serious sideline and association with Montana’s outstanding wildlife resources, and abundant historic sites in the State Parks System, provided constant artistic inspiration. Following retirement, art became a primary focus and has resulted in an extensive collection which is now being shared with the public for the first time.

fair and will be meeting with MSUB chefs on March 16 to learn how to create their specific menu items. Members will be in the kitchen and serving their culinary creations the day of the fair. Neil Beyer, OIS international marketing and outreach specialist, said food served this year will be, “more street food in style.” “We want the theme carried throughout the fair of street foods you would find commonplace, a lot of what the locals eat,” Beyer said. Additionally, students will also share more of their respective cultures through language, writing, fashion and music. “The great thing about this event is that the local community gets exposed to our varied student groups,” Beyer said. “I think, especially in this particular time it’s important to meet face to face with diverse numbers of people.” OIS Director Dr. Paul Foster added, “You don’t need to know the language or have studied culture to enjoy and appreciate food or music.” The public is invited to the food fair, which costs $12 per person. Dead Presleys
Dead Presleys are set to release their debut record “Muses” in late Spring 2017. To accompany the record, they launched a brand new website that will chronicle the creative process, offering a no holds barred, honest and transparent look at of making “Muses”. Each member will offer their own take every step of the way via individual blogs within the website. All of the good and all of the bad. www.deadpresleys.com Dead Presleys simply want to play groove rock n’ roll music that gets people moving. Drawing from blues, punk rock, r&b, jazz, 80’s hair metal and pretty much everything else, Dead Presleys’ music keeps you tapping your toes and banging your head as they hit you with a blistering fuzz-rocker one minute and follow it up with a slow soul ballad the next. Kerry Sherman (Vocals/Guitar), Colton Gabel (Drums), Zach Reiter (Bass) and Tyler Cook (Guitar) plan to kick things into overdrive with the release of “Muses” and bring their brand of groove rock to as many people as possible.
This hilarious musical parody set to classic tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s has been a worldwide hit for 14 years. The story centers around four women at a lingerie sale who have nothing in common but a black lace bra and memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex and more. New theatre group forms, bringing locally-made professional theatre to Billings and our region
An ensemble of local actors and directors has announced the formation of Yellowstone Repertory Theatre (YRT), a new professional theatre company. The group’s mission is to bring “professional theatre to Billings and the surrounding region by creating a committed ensemble that dares the artist while captivating and inspiring the audience.” YRT’s founders include Artistic Director Craig Huisenga, Managing Director Dina Brophy, and Marketing Director Caitlin Hart. Sarah Butts will serve as Artistic Associate. While YRT members commend the skill and talents of other local theatre groups, the group is committed to differentiating itself by compensating actors for their efforts. “Payment for skill, refined craft, and time commitment was important to us,” Huisenga said. “As Yellowstone Rep grows, we hope to attract professional talent from across the region— maybe even the country.” YRT will focus on classics and contemporary plays destined to become classics. Plays by women playwrights will also be a priority as the company plans its seasons. Three Pulitzer Prize winners will highlight YRT’s first season. The group plans a soft opening this spring with a production of Doubt, a Parable by John Patrick Shanley, which will perform April 21-May 6 at 2905 Montana Avenue. Huisenga will direct Brophy and Hart in Doubt, a Parable, and the production will also feature Shane Patrick McClurg and Wanda Morales. Pending rights approval, YRT will officially launch in the fall of 2017 with a production of Arthur Miller’s classic, Death of a Salesman followed by Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart in the spring of 2018. Performance spaces will vary according to the needs of each play.
Huisenga, Brophy, and Hart were all recently featured together in Sacrifice Cliff Theatre Company’s production of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, directed by Sarah Butts. Ensemble members have been active in local community theatre for years and have worked together in different combinations in some of Billings’ best productions. Huisenga has directed at NOVA Center for the Performing Arts (formerly Venture Theatre), Billings Studio Theatre, and Sacrifice Cliff Theatre Company. Productions he has directed in Billings include August: Osage County, The History Boys, Communicating Doors, Vanya & Sonya & Masha & Spike, and Gidion’s Knot, all of which included other ensemble members in the cast, several with Dina Brophy. He also directed productions of Is He Dead?, Don’t Dress for Dinner, and The Dixie Swim Club at BST. Brophy has been performing on Billings’ stages for more than 15 years, most recent appearances include Sacrifice Cliff Theatre Company’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Gidion’s Knot, Steel Magnolias at Billings Studio Theatre, as well as Vanya & Sonya & Masha & Spike and August: Osage County at NOVA. She studied theatre at Simpson College in Iowa, served as Operations Manager for Venture Theatre from 2004 to 2010 and has worked in health care administration for more than 25 years. Caitlin Hart has become a leading player at Billings theatres after national tours of Doubt, a Parable and The Miracle Worker with Montana Repertory Theatre. Local theatregoers will remember her performances in Mary Poppins at Billings Studio Theatre and Sweet Charity at NOVA, among others. Sarah Butts, who just completed an MFA Directing degree from UC Irvine, directed a number of shows at Venture Theatre, including In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play, (with Huisenga in the cast), and Violet, the Musical, among others. She has also directed several shows at Grandstreet Theatre in Helena. Huisenga said, “We believe Billings deserves a professional theatre that supports local theatre artists. There are many actors in Billings who have worked professionally in other places who should be able to do the same here. We think Billings is ready to support high-quality, professional theatre that pays its actors.” To stay updated with YRT, like their page at www.facebook. com/yellowstonerep/

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
