Junior Piano Recital Announced at MSUB

Event takes place at 7:30 p.m., March 31 in Cisel Recital Hall on the University campus. The public is invited to this free event. The daughter of Dana and Jeffrey Dietz, Dietz graduated from Billings West High School and has studied piano with Professor Dorothea Cromley since 2014. She has been participating in piano lessons and activities since she was about seven years old, starting in Musikgarten with Karen Hough, and then taking lessons with Sherlon Orth. Dietz currently has a piano studio and teaches children from the ages of four to sixteen either in home or at the college campus. Dietz is both an English and Music Major at Montana State University in Billings. Her program will consist of works by Haydn, Beethoven, Khachaturian, Chopin, Granados, and Ponce.

Garrison Keillor’s “Just Passing Through” America’s acclaimed humorist and public radio host Garrison Keillor returns to Billings with his show Just Passing Through at Alberta Bair Theater on Thursday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. About 400 tickets remain. His performance in March 2016 sold out. Keillor went to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969, and on July 6, 1974, he hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul. Today, some four million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations coast to coast and beyond tune in to the show each week. Upon his retirement from A Prairie Home Companion last year, Keillor turned over the show to mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile. Keillor can still be heard on public radio when hosting The Writer’s Almanac. Keillor has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His many books include Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance, and Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny (Viking). He is the host of the daily program The Writer’s Almanac and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, Good Poems: American Places (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman. In 2007, he opened an independent bookstore, Common Good Books, in St. Paul where he lives with his wife and daughter. This appearance is sponsored by ABC6/Fox4 and 730KYYA radio.

In 2010, the five Wisconsinites that make up Horseshoes & Hand Grenades found themselves in a living room in the college town of Stevens Point, WI, holding acoustic instruments and enjoying a hodgepodge of fermented beverages. Music and revelry ensued that evening and, while many of the party guests eventually bid their goodbye well into the morning hours, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades wasn’t ready to let the get-together fade. Greensky Bluegrass

Greensky Bluegrass is Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass) and Paul Hoffman (mandolin). Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. Downtown 5K to raise funds for at-risk population Spare Change for Real Change is pleased to announce the 8th Annual Purple 5K on Sunday, April 2, 2017. The race will begin at 9 a.m. at Grandview Park, proceed through Pioneer Park, and tour the historic district of Downtown Billings, from the campus of MSU Billings, through the hospital corridor, ending under Sky Point. Immediately following will be an award ceremony, giveaways, music, drinks, and food provided by Big Guy Barbecue. Participants can register at runsignup.com Late registration and packet pick-up will be on Friday, March 31, at the Downtown Billings office (2815 2nd Ave N) from 7:00am - 7:00 pm. Registration and packet pick-up for the race will also be available on the morning of the race, Sunday, April 2, from 7:30am-8:50am at Grandview Park. Packets for those who register on the day of the event can be picked up under SkyPoint after they finish the race. Public is invited to the 2017 Billings Clinic Science Expo The 29th Anniversary of the Billings Clinic Science Expo will take place on March 24 and 25, 2017 on the campus of Montana State University- Billings. This year, 355 students from 59 schools have entered 305 science and engineering projects for judging at the event. This year’s Expo theme is “In the Path of the Solar Eclipse.” Guest speaker, Dr. Angela Des Jardins, Director of the Montana Space Grant Consortium, will present about the solar eclipse on Friday, March 24 in the Petro Theater at Montana State University Billings. If you are curious to know what we will experience here in Billings during this special event in August of this year, come hear her talk. Her presentation is free and open to the public. Judging of science projects will follow Dr. Des Jardins’s presentation. Projects are primarily judged on how well students use and understand the scientific method and the engineering design process; but projects are also judged for their creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic merit with over $20,000 in prizes to be won. The Science Expo is a stepping stone to national and international competition for many of our student scientists. While the judging portion is not open to the public, everyone is invited to visit the science fair projects and to participate in the interactive exhibits from local science-minded organizations on Saturday, March 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the MSU-B Physical Education Building. Two interactive presentations will also take place throughout Saturday: The Space Public Outreach Team’s presentation on “Total Solar Eclipse: Preparing for the Great American Eclipse” in Room 52-54 in the PE building from 11 am – noon. BILLINGS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS SET FOR APRIL 23rd

2017-2018 Season Opens September 23, 2017 Billings, MT - The Billings Symphony will hold orchestra auditions on Sunday, April 23, 2017 on the campus of Montana State UniversityBillings. While there are specific positions vacant, auditions will be held to populate the substitute musician list for all sections of the orchestra. Current vacancies include: Principal Flute, Principal Bassoon, Principal Tuba, Principal Timpani, Principal Percussion, Principal Harp, Section Flute/Piccolo, Section Trumpet, Section Strings, and substitutes for all instruments. Individuals interested in auditioning should contact Candy Holzer at the Billings Symphony Office at (406) 252-3610 to sign up for an audition. Audition sign up closes on Friday, April 14th. No walk-on auditions will be available. A travel stipend of 35¢/mile up to $250/concert or airfare reimbursement up to $250 is also provided. Lodging (usually homestay) is also provided for out of town musicians. No Per diem is provided. The Billings Symphony Orchestra is a professional orchestra, and all musicians must successfully complete a double-blind audition prior to engagement. Double-blind auditions are held with the candidate performing behind a screen where s/he cannot see the audition committee and in the same fashion, the audition committee does not know her/his identity. “The Billings Symphony Orchestra is an extraordinary professional orchestra, filled with passionate, talented musicians,” says Anne Harrigan, music director and conductor of the BSO&C. “We strongly encourage musicians from around the region who are interested in playing at this level to audition. “Auditions for internship positions with the orchestra will also be held on April 23rd and are open to students through high school level. Written by the notable sister duo Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally) and Delia Ephron (You’ve Got Mail) Love, Loss, and What I Wore is a play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes and memories covering all the important subjects--mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses, and why we only wear black. Based on the best selling book by Ilene Beckerman. Love, Loss and What I Wore, will be directed by Mary Ann Connors. Billings - The Downtown Billings Public Art Committee invites artists to apply for the 2017 Traffic Signal Box Program. Applications can be found on www.downtownbillings.com. The application deadline is March 31, 2017. Artists may submit 2-dimensional work of any medium and the selected art will be digitally transferred to a special vinyl overlay that will be professionally wrapped around the traffic signal box. All submissions will be reviewed by a selection panel comprised of local artists, gallery owners, business owners, and members of the Billings Cultural Partners. Artists chosen will receive compensation. The vinyl wrap is weather resistant, graffiti resistant, and can last up to 5 years. John Roberts Y Pan Blanco Present Afrofunk and Latin Jazz for Faculty Recital Just months ago, Montana State University Billings Assistant Professor of Low Brass John Roberts released his new album Soul Y Pimienta. On March 26, you can enjoy the mix of Afrofunk, Latin Jazz and other world music during Roberts’ Faculty Recital. The recital, featuring his band John Roberts Y Pan Blanco, takes place at 2 p.m. in Cisel Hall on the University campus. The very danceable album includes seven tracks influenced by Cuban Son, Congolese Soukous, sounds from Mexico, American soul, jazz and more. Roberts said the music is a direct result of the experiences he has had playing around the world with a vast array of musicians. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Montana State – Billings and received his Master of Fine Arts in Western Orchestral Trombone Performance from California Institute of the Arts. He also conducts the Jazz ensembles and teaches World Music. Feeling equally comfortable in orchestral and commercial music realms, for the past 17 years Roberts has been touring, recording, and performing in Los Angeles, around the U.S. and around the world, including Mexico, India, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and Africa. Hip Hop Meets Classically Trained String Musicians with Black Violin As part of Alberta Bair Theater’s 2016-17 First Interstate Bank Fox Series, Black Violin brings their critically acclaimed performance style and message of positivity to ABT on Thursday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. “Black Violin upends cultural and musical stereotypes,” says The Miami Herald. “[They’re] an unexpected blend of classically trained musicianship and hip-hop beats and inventiveness.” Black Violin’s UNITY Tour, which kicked off last Fall, continues with more than 30 cities included in 2017. Black Violin uses music to break down barriers and stereotypes that frequently form due to differences in race, economic status, religion, and more.
