4 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

Garrison Keillor’s “Just Passing Through” America’s acclaimed humorist and public radio host Garrison Keillor returns to Billings with his show Just Passing Through at Alberta Bair Theater on Thursday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. About 400 tickets remain. His performance in March 2016 sold out. Keillor went to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969, and on July 6, 1974, he hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul. Today, some four million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations coast to coast and beyond tune in to the show each week. Upon his retirement from A Prairie Home Companion last year, Keillor turned over the show to mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile. Keillor can still be heard on public radio when hosting The Writer’s Almanac. Keillor has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His many books include Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance, and Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny (Viking). He is the host of the daily program The Writer’s Almanac and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, Good Poems: American Places (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman. In 2007, he opened an independent bookstore, Common Good Books, in St. Paul where he lives with his wife and daughter. This appearance is sponsored by ABC6/Fox4 and 730KYYA radio.

THE CLINTONS, ALDER LIGHTS, JOSEPHINE SUNRISE

We got our start in 1999 at a frat party on the upper floor of the Story Mansion in Bozeman, Montana. Since then we’ve played almost 1000 shows which have allowed us to tour around the western half of the US and occasionally share the stage with some pretty cool and respectable bands like Dierks Bentley, Barenaked Ladies, Blackhawk, and the Kentucky Headhunters. Most of our shows are at music venues that hold between 200 and 600 people. We always feel like we know everyone in the room even when lots of people are seeing us for the first time. THE LAST REVEL AND THE CROW AND THE CANYON

21+ From the budding music scene of the Upper Midwest comes the cutting edge Front Porch Americana soundscapes of The Last Revel. This powerfully talented trio of multiinstrumentalists from Minneapolis, Minnesota so naturally blends the genres of Folk, Rockabilly, Old Time String-Band and Rock to create a sound that is as equally original as it is timeless. The Last Revel trio utilizes their multi-instrumental abilities to bring the acoustic guitar, upright bass, fiddle, 5-string banjo, harmonica, kick drum and three-part vocal harmonies together to consistently deliver “Bombastic live performances,” as well as delicate and haunting folk ballads. Although the band has only been playing together since 2014, Crow and the Canyon sound like a band of ageold collaborators and friends. Their heartfelt yet cerebral lyrics, soaring vocals, and impressive instrumentals are endlessly listenable, while also remaining inventive and interesting. Their debut album, Leaving Soon, is a refreshingly contemplative take on high-spirited Americana songwriting which rewards repeated listening and weaves back and forth between precise bluegrass, heartland acoustic folk, and bluesy country. The result is a series of songs that sound just as natural on a front porch in the heat of summer, in a dimly lit basement pub in the dead of winter or rollicking on a big festival stage. Their charismatic, engaging performances have garnered them a beloved reputation that keeps music lovers returning time and time again. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave N. 8 p.m. $10 April 3

Obituary

Upon switching their name from Xecutioner to Obituary, the career of one of the most successful and influential Death Metal bands began. Hailing from Florida and featuring John Tardy (vocals), brother Donald Tardy (drums), Trevor Peres (guitar), Allen West (guitar), and Daniel Tucker (bass), the band signed to Roadracer Records, a now defunct division of

Roadrunner, for the recording of their debut album—the immense and immeasurable heavy “Slowly We Rot” (1989). The album was engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound Studio, which would come to be the most sought after facility for production of albums during 1990’s rise of the Death Metal genre. Unlike much death metal preceding it, the album had a sludgy feel and integrated devastatingly slow passages along with obliterating overtures that reached far beyond any point of mayhem that metal had yet to reach; the result was a carnal pleasure for doom, death and thrash fans alike coupling the adrenaline of a speedball with the slow, degrading measures of a sewer at dusk. Like them or not, Obituary was unlike anything anyone had heard before. WORLD’S FINEST

It’s been a wild and crazy ride for the fellas in World’s Finest, since their modest beginning as an acoustic duo in Portland, OR living rooms in 2011. With a songwriting style rooted in Americana, the band banks on their

ability to transcend genres of all kinds. String-centric and bluegrass-inspired compositions seamlessly transition into 3-Dimensional Psytrance, Funk, and Dub soundscapes, leaving their audience with a full circle experience of emotion and dance. Their appreciation for punk and ska can be found peppered throughout their shows and albums, made evident by up-tempo, high-energy offerings, reminiscent of such classic acts as NOFX and Operation Ivy. Never happy to settle, Chris, Dan, Sean, Evan, and Mike continue to push boundaries and challenge themselves, while hoping to inspire their listeners to expect the most out of what a band in the modern age can be capable of conjuring up. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave N. 9 p.m.

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory. org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

Open House planned for Construction and Carpentry home at City College on March 31

Anthony Sperry

Every year, students of the Construction and Carpentry Program build a modular home. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 31, the program is hosting an open house to celebrate the home’s completion. Students and faculty will be providing tours at the City College location. The public is welcome to attend the open house. Currently, students are putting the final touches on the 1,400 square-foot, three bed, two bath home that boasts tile accents and rolling barn doors. a City College student paints the baseboard in the new modular home“This yearly project really gives students the hands-on experience they need so they are ready to enter the workforce and many go on to run their own contracting business,” said Instructor Terry Madtson. “This group of students has done a beautiful job and I’m really proud of them.” As part of the curriculum, students learn about construction as well as skills to stoke entrepreneurial fires. Classes include project management and lessons in cost analyses, budgeting and return on investment principals. Completion of the two-year program earn an associate of applied science degree. Anthony Sperry, 33, is on the cusp of finishing his first year. After graduation, he plans to run his own contracting business. “I entered the program because I missed out on a promotion at work,” said Sperry. “I want to be my own boss, so I thought I’d learn a new trade. I don’t want my options to be limited.” While painting bathroom walls, Emmitt Reiland, 19, said he’s learned a lot during his first year. He’s looking forward to next year and building another home. “I hope we put a fireplace in it,” Reiland said. In April, the modular home will be sold, Madtson said. “The proceeds from selling these homes help cover the costs of construction and helps keep the program going,” Madtson said.

Art Inspired by Yellowstone National Park at the Yellowstone Art Museum The Yellowstone Art Museum unveils a new installation by a Brazilian-born artist now based in Boulder, Colorado. The installation of Archaea: Rosane Volchan O’Conor is a fusion of the artist’s interests in biology, music, and the visual arts. Educated atv the Escola de Musica Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and the Royal Academy of Music in Brussels, O’Conor moved to Boulder in 2011, drawn by the city’s cultural, educational, and outdoor offerings. Her installation Archaea alludes directly to the unique history of the Yellowstone Caldera’s history and micro-biome. “Archaea” are microscopic organisms that survive in extreme environments. They were first studied in Yellowstone National Park, where they are responsible for the magnificent coloration of the famed Morning Glory hot spring. Rosane Volchan O’Conor, Paracentrotus, 2014, ink on Mylar and monoprint. Photo Courtesy of the artist.O’Conor’s installation draws from the biomorphic forms of this branch of scientific inquiry as well as the intense coloration of the geyser basins. Her immersive installation is suggestive of biological forms crawling off the walls, hanging crystalized in space, and mutating into clusters across the floor. Using welded metal wire, torch-bent glass and neon, acrylic, paper, Mylar, porcelain, and other conventional and unconventional materials, O’Conor creates a miniature universe. To stand within this installation is to discover a bustling, interconnected world of micro-organisms existing independent of the laws of scientific reality. The environment is at once chaotic and harmonious, expansive, and intricate. Rosane O’Conor’s prints, which underscore her Brazilian heritage, will also be featured. These works not only clarify the artist’s sculptural vision, but draw from a long tradition of decorative forms that are imbued with intense color and bold compositions and design. The prints align the descriptive aspects of scientific drawing with the spirit of twentyfirst century curiosity. O’Conor is not the first and will not be the last artist to be inspired by the profound beauty of Yellowstone National Park. However, her unique visual, musical, and scientific interests blend into a visual symphony that is enigmatic, intriguing, and beautiful to behold. As an adjunct to the exhibition, the museum is privileged to exhibit three historic watercolors by Thomas Moran that stem from the Hayden Expedition of 1871. These works are on loan courtesy of the National Park Service. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to compare the differing approaches that these artists have taken when interpreting the subject of one of the nation’s best loved parks. The English artist Thomas Moran (1837-1926) was the first professionally trained artist to paint extensively in what would become Yellowstone National Park. Moran signed on as expedition artist with Ferdinand Hayden’s U.S.

Geological Survey. Photographer William Henry Jackson also accompanied this expedition, and the two of them created the first and some of the most lasting images of Yellowstone. Moran’s intensely colored paintings and sketches were greeted in the East with skepticism, but eventually his work is credited with helping to persuade the federal government to create the world’s first national park in 1872. O’Connor’s installation and Thomas Moran’s watercolors will be on view from March 23, 2017 through August 6, 2017. A public reception will take place 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 23rd. The museum is free to museum members, and the general public is welcome for a modest admission fee. For more information about this and other current exhibitions, visit the museum’s website www.artmuseum.org, or call 406-256-6804.

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
