YAM hosts information session for artists about copyright law and intellectual property The Yellowstone Art Museum will host an informative session on the essentials of protecting copyright and intellectual property rights. The session is designed for artists, writers, and other creative professionals, but all are welcome. “Know Your Rights: Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights for Artists” will be presented by attorneys Bob Griffin, Shalise Zobel, and Isaac Potter from Crowley Fleck PLLP and Billings attorney Jennifer L. Webber of WEBBERpllc. Digital technologies have made it easier than ever before for forgers and plagiarists to steal creative work. It is

also important for artists who use other artists’ work in their own to know the limitations and definitions. Learn what you need to know at this important session. The presentation and Q&A will take place in the YAM’s Murdock Gallery on Thursday, April 20, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Montana. The program is free of charge and will include free admission to the YAM’s galleries beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Award winning pianist to perform at MSUB Tanner Jorden, 14, and a Connections Student at Montana State University Billings, will perform his solo debut recital at 7:30 p.m., April 7th in Cisel Recital Hall, on the University campus. In 2015, Jorden received honorable mention at a local competition. Shortly after, he attended the Utah State University Music Clinic and returned to study with MSUB Professor Dorothea Cromley. In November, Jorden won the state level of the Music Teachers National Association Competition and received honorable mention at the regionals in Washington. He also competed in the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition in November. Recently, Jorden received first place at the Montana Association of Symphony Orchestras Competition. Jorden will perform a solo with symphony orchestras throughout Montana. He had his orchestral debut with the Great Falls Symphony, where he received a standing ovation, and was called back to the stage several times until he played an encore. The Billings native has been invited to perform with the Billings and Glacier symphonies in 2018. His recital at MSUB is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Little Bighorn Battlefield spring hours and free days Effective Saturday, April 1st, 2017, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. These spring hours will be in effect until summer hours begin on May 30, 2017. This includes Custer National Cemetery, the Indian Memorial and Seventh Cavalry Monument, and the Visitor Center/Museum. The self–guiding Deep Ravine Trail and tour road to the RenoBenteen Battlefield will be open from 8:00 a.m. -5:30 p.m. daily. Entrance fees are $20.00 per private vehicle. Interagency, Senior, Military and Access passes are also available. Entrance fees will be waived at Little Bighorn Battlefield and other National Park Service sites during the week of April 1624th to recognize National Park Week. National Park Week is an opportunity to engage families and communities in America’s great outdoors, reconnecting them with nature and creating close to home opportunities for people to get outside, be active, and have fun. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument interprets and protects the site of one of the most famous battles in American history, the Battle of the Little Bighorn. GAME NIGHT AT THIS HOUSE OF BOOKS

Every Thursday night is Game Night at This House of Books! Every week on Thursday night, we clear the tables and break out the tabletop games, and we invite you to join us! Take this opportunity to play with fellow gamers, both young and old, seasoned experts and newbies alike. We’re happy to engage you in an intense game or sit back and teach you how to play. We get all types, and you’re sure to find your match! Not seasoned on the newest games? No problem! Not only can we teach you the ways, but we’re also happy to sit down and play a game of chess, go, backgammon, boggle, whatever classic no matter how far back you like. Be adventurous, try out the newest stuff; our staff is always happy to help teach, as are the customers we draw in. Already have a gaming group, but you’re curious about using us as a base of operations? We’re happy to host! Bring by your party and delve your dungeons, raise your cities, solve your mysteries, whatever game you like to host! Be a part of the group here at This House of Books and try a game! Again, this happens every Thursday, so don’t lament if you miss a week; we’d love to see you the next one. The event is free and open to all ages. 224 N Broadway, Billings 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. April 6

AUTHOR READING: THE LILY GOOD PATH BOOKS FOR CHILDREN

Lily Good Path, a Crow Indian girl, is the heroine of a series of stories that introduce children to tribal storytelling traditions while teaching respect for native cultures and the need to care for the Earth. Her adventures are based on folk stories of specific North American tribes. Independent Publisher Online identifies the awardwinning Lily Good Path series as “groundbreaking.” We think the Lily Good Path books will make excellent gifts for Easter. Accompanying the series is a charming set of character dolls that we can show at the reading. The books meet Office of Public Instruction criteria for use in schools and are currently being taught at the elementary school level. Lesson plans for the Lily series are being presented at the Montana Indian Education Association Conference in April. The authors -- Bessie Crooked Arm, Sabrina Half, Violet Birdinground, and the series illustrator, A.J. Otjen -- will be at This House of Books to give us readings from Lily Good Path. Find out more at their website, www. bakaate.com, then bring your children to meet the authors at This House of Books. This House of Books, 224 N. Broadway 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. Free April 8

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory. org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

COLT FORD

“I won’t back up/I won’t back down/I’ve been raised up to stand my ground” “Answer to No One” Colt Ford’s story is so improbable, it could well be the subject for one of his songs, and indeed his autobiography is laced through his music on the five albums he’s released on his Average Joes Entertainment label over the past, from his 2008 debut, Ride Through the Country, to 2010’s Chicken & Biscuits, 2011’s Every Chance I Get, 2012’s Declaration of Independence and last year’sThanks for Listening. Answer to No One: The Colt Ford Classics collects 13 tracks from those five – and one from the 2010 Mud Digger compilation – for a complete collection yet of his revolutionary mash-up of good old boy country and the rhythms of hip-hop, a groundbreaking combination. An Evening with Neltje A Five City Tour of Public Readings And Book Signings North of Crazy: A Memoir by Neltje • Livingston, Thursday, April 27, 7 p.m., Elk River Books • Missoula, Friday, April 28, 7 p.m., Shakespeare & Co. • Butte, Saturday, April 29, 7 p.m., Clark Chateau Art Center • Bozeman, Tuesday, May 2, 7 p.m., Country BookShelf • Billings, Friday, May 5, 3 p.m., Billings Public Library

All events are free and open to the public. "An epic and very personal memoir of riches to rags to spiritual and artistic triumph. Neltje's life story is profoundly moving-and instructive. A classic, honest, and beautifully written memoir." – Bill Henderson, editor, Pushcart Prize She was born Neltje Doubleday, yet for years she has used no last name and goes solely by Neltje. Her grandfather started Doubleday Page, which over the years became Doubleday Publishing. Her father Nelson, Doubleday, expanded the company and hoped his son Nelson would follow his father’s passion. At eighteen Neltje married John Sargent, Sr. who would go on to become the President and Chief Executive of Doubleday. Years later her brother Nelson Doubleday took the company helm. The life she recounts in her memoir NORTH OF CRAZY (St. Martin’s Press, 2016, $25.99) is one of great passion, sadness, determination, and courage. "A rich and often mercurial story of a rich and often mercurial life. Neltje's voice is fresh, original, entirely unaffected. Whether she writes of child abuse, abusive alcoholics, cheats, crazy poets, new love, ruined love, painting, or marching to Selma, Alabama, she does it straight from the heart. Hers is a frank history, an adventure, hard-earned, not at all pretty, and fascinating. Here is the story of a woman who had to fight just about everyone along her way to get what she wanted and needed, especially love and independence. And in the end, in her own way, she succeeds." – Brad Watson, author of Miss Jane: A Novel Neltje was brought up in a moneyed world of cultural prestige with the expectation that she would become a socially-gifted wife and mother. Her childhood was marred by her parent's

abandonment and alcoholism; their focus was only on her brother. At age nine the family friend who took her riding sexually abused her. This secret was to haunt Neltje. Marriage to Sargent seemed to offer an escape, and for a while it did. Their life together was filled with travel, parties and martinifueled evenings entertaining the literati. Theodore Roethke slept in their bathtub and once, during a manic bender, held a knife to Neltje's throat. W. Somerset Maugham offered advice on sex in marriage. Other writers, artists and friends included Daphne du Maurier (who made a pass at Neltje's mother), Raoul Fleishman (co-founder of the New Yorker), Gertrude Lawrence, Oskar Kokoschka (a painter who was a contemporary of Picasso) Bertrand Russell, Georges Simenon, and Bennett Cerf. When her children were aged five and seven, the marriage fell apart. John Sargent’s philandering and her family's power struggles over money had taken their toll. After two years of soul searching Neltje obtained a divorce, put her life together, met a writer /painter from London whom she eventually married and moved her family to Wyoming where her children went to a two room school house. Years later, Neltje led a long battle to have Doubleday Publishing go public. Her mother, brother and Sargent fought back and won partially, but so did Neltje. The tale of how she established herself with two small children in the middle of nowhere includes a second marriage to a man who eventually swindled her out of money and almost wrested away a beloved Picasso. Her story also showcases her extraordinary attachment to the natural world, “My cabin here at the base of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming fronts on the rising sun yet allows me to watch light fall behind the granite peaks each evening from my living room chair.” Neltje is an abstract expressionist painter having exhibited throughout the Rockies to the sands of Florida. Her latest interest has been in painting huge canvases, ten foot high by thirty feet long evoking her emotional response to the natural world. She's now 82 and plans to go on 108. Neltje spends her weekends on the Little North Fork of Crazy Woman Creek in Wyoming. NORTH OF CRAZY is a memoir as unconventional and courageous as its author. 49th annual MSU Billings Powwow starts April 7 ‘Blessing the Heartbeat’ takes place in Alterowitz Gymnasium on April 7-8. Public invited to this free event.

Children at the 2014 annual MSU Billings Powwow

Colorful pageantry and lively music will once again fill the Alterowitz Gym at Montana State University Billings next weekend. The university will host the 49th Annual MSUB Powwow, which will commence with the Grand Entry at 6p.m., Friday, April 7 and continues through Saturday, April 8. Director of American Indian Outreach Reno Charette said powwows are held across the country and strive to renew the culture and rich heritage of American Indians. “Students, faculty and staff join together to help put this event on,” Charette said. “Our MSU Billings powwow is one of the biggest student-led American Indian events in the Northwest.” The powwow will draw some 3,000 people to the two-day event. Weekend highlights include dance competitions for all ages and with multiple categories. Typically, about 500 dancers enter the competition, which gives cash prizes for the top winners. Native American nations from Wyoming, North Dakota and Canada, to name a few, will participate and all of Montana’s tribal nations attend. While the event shines a spotlight on native culture, the powwow is open to the public. Entrance is free and a variety of vendors from across the region will be on hand in the main floor with a menagerie of American Indian items for sale. The Grand Entry emcee is JD Old Mouse, with the Turtle Mountain Chippewa/Norther Cheyenne tribe. Saturday events begin at noon and wraps up with an 11:30 p.m. Winners Ceremony.

Trio of music recitals announced by MSUB Concerts take place at 3p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., April 8, in the Cisel Recital Hall on the University Campus. All three are free and open to the public. Mady Johnson will be presenting her senior clarinet recital at 3 p.m., April 8, at Cisel Recital Hall on the campus of Montana State University Billings. Mady is a 2013 graduate of Shepherd High School in Shepherd, Montana. She is working toward a Bachelor of Arts, Music Performance Option, with a minor in Art. Mady is highly involved in the music community of Billings. She has been involved in the MSUB Symphonic Band, pep band, jazz ensemble, the Billings Community Band, the Al Beedo Shrine Dance Band, Magic City Big Band, Billings Studio Theater, and the Billings Symphony Orchestra. Mady recently played in the pit orchestra of BST’s musical production of “Sugar.” Her program will feature compositions by Mendelssohn, Bernstein, Arnold, and Muczynski. Mady is a student of Dr. Gary Behm. Belle Horman, horn, will be presenting her junior recital at 5 p.m., April 8, in the Cisel Recital Hall. Belle is a 2012 graduate of Billings Senior High School. She is majoring in both Music Education and Music Performance at MSUB. Belle performs in the MSUB Symphonic and Pep bands and is also a member of the Billings Community Band, the High Plains Brass Quintet, and her ensemble Triohhhh. She is a student of Mark Fenderson. The final performance that evening will be by Josh Zeeck. Josh will perform his senior recital at 7:30 p.m., in the Cisel Recital Hall. Josh grew up in Billings, Montana and graduated from Billings Senior High school in 2012. He is studying Musical Performance and plans to use his degree to begin composing music. He is studying under John Roberts for both euphonium and trombone. Josh currently plays trombone in the MSU Billings Pep Band, as well as the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. Guest artists in Josh’s recital will include Danielle Branson and John Roberts, and Josh’s accompanist is Tim Schoessler. The pieces being performed will include selections by Guilmant, Handel, Reiche, Telemann, Blazhevich, Rollins and Sanders. All three concerts are free and open to the public.

PBR’S MAGIC CITY

Big Sky Country Home to PBR’s Longest Running Event For the PBR (Professional Bull Riders), Billings, Montana, also known as the Magic City, has proven to be just that and more for America’s original extreme sport. PBR’s annual Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) visit to Billings is the longest-running event for the organization. PBR makes its 22nd consecutive stop in the city this year at Rimrock Auto Arena on April 7-9 with the Stanley Performance In Action Invitational presented by Cooper Tires. Since the first event in 1996, loyal Billings fans have witnessed many historical performances. They’ve seen past, present and future World Champions take home the event title, with PBR awarding more than $2.5 million in prize money to the 20 different cowboys who have won in Billings. One of those historical moments played out on the dirt last year in front of more than 20,000 fans attending the three-day event, an attendance feat also reached at PBR’s 20th anniversary in the city in 2015. Billings-born and 2004 World Champion Mike Lee entered the three-day event with 499 qualified rides, poised to join Brazilian Guilherme Marchi as the only other rider in BFTS history to log 500 qualified rides. In Round 2 of the event, Lee etched his name in the history books when he rode Rockin I Rodeo’s Tahonta’s Magic for 86.75 points, his 500th qualified ride. That same weekend, Jess Lockwood showed bull riding and Montana fans everywhere his name was one to remember. In just his third BFTS event, the then 18-year-old high school student used back-to-back round wins for his first event victory at PBR’s elite level. He won Round Three after riding Jeff Robinson/TNT Bucking Bulls’ Alligator Arms for 89.5 points, but it was his Championship Round ride that was career defining for the rookie. In his final out of the event, Lockwood rode Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/ Ken Barnhard’s Modified Clyde for 90.5 points, the teen’s first career 90-point BFTS ride and highest scored ride of the event. Lockwood would go on to earn six additional Top 5 finishes, 12 Top 10 finishes and two 90-point rides en route to winning the 2016 PBR Rookie of the Year title. To date, six World Champions have emerged the event winner in the more than 20 stops PBR has made in Billings. 1995 World Champion Tuff Hedeman won in 1996, followed by two-time winner and 1998 World Champion Troy Dun (1999 and 2000), 1999 World Champion Cody Hart (1997), and two-time World Champions Chris Shivers (2001) and Justin McBride (2005). Two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney was the last to win in Montana, taking the title in 2007, fresh of his Rookie of the Year performance in 2006. PBR’s ties to the state of Montana, however, aren’t limited to its annual stop in Billings. Four of PBR’s top riders hail from the Big Sky state; Lee and reigning Rookie of the Year Lockwood, of Volborg, lead the Montana contingent. Other Montanan cowboys include Matt Triplett of Columbia Falls and Nevada Newman of Melstone, who is currently on the sidelines after undergoing shoulder surgery earlier in the 2017 season. Montanan’s can also look no further than PBR’s official entertainer Flint Rasmussen for a fellow statesman who resides in Choteau. The World’s Top 35 bull riders and rankest bucking bulls in the country will bring their high-adrenaline action back to Billings April 7-9 at Rimrock Auto Arena where they will vie for their piece of the $140,000 payout. The stars of the PBR will face one bull each in Rounds 1 through 3. Immediately following Round 3 on Sunday, the riders’ individual scores will be totaled, and the Top 15 will advance to the Built Ford Tough Championship Round for one more ride and a chance at the $30,000 event title. Billings is the 12th stop on the 2017 BFTS schedule. The season began in New York City at the world famous Madison Square Garden on Jan. 6-8, 2017 and will conclude with the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Nov. 1-5, 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Tickets for the Stanley Performance In Action Invitational presented by Cooper Tires are on sale now and start at $17. They can be purchased at the MetraPark Arena Box Office, all MetraPark outlets, online at metrapark.com or by phone at 406-256-2400. For more information on the PBR, go to PBR.com, or follow on Facebook at Facebook. com/PBR, Twitter at Twitter.com/PBR, and YouTube at YouTube.com/PBR.

22 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
