YAM hosts information session for artists about copyright law and intellectual property The Yellowstone Art Museum will host an informative session on the essentials of protecting copyright and intellectual property rights. The session is designed for artists, writers, and other creative professionals, but all are welcome. “Know Your Rights: Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights for Artists” will be presented by attorneys Bob Griffin, Shalise Zobel, and Isaac Potter from Crowley Fleck PLLP and Billings attorney Jennifer L. Webber of WEBBERpllc. Digital technologies have made it easier than ever before for forgers and plagiarists to steal creative work. It is

also important for artists who use other artists’ work in their own to know the limitations and definitions. Learn what you need to know at this important session. The presentation and Q&A will take place in the YAM’s Murdock Gallery on Thursday, April 20, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Montana. The program is free of charge and will include free admission to the YAM’s galleries beginning at 6:00 p.m.

An Evening with Neltje A Five City Tour of Public Readings And Book Signings North of Crazy: A Memoir by Neltje • Livingston, Thursday, April 27, 7 p.m., Elk River Books • Missoula, Friday, April 28, 7 p.m., Shakespeare & Co. • Butte, Saturday, April 29, 7 p.m., Clark Chateau Art Center • Bozeman, Tuesday, May 2, 7 p.m., Country BookShelf • Billings, Friday, May 5, 3 p.m., Billings Public Library

All events are free and open to the public. "An epic and very personal memoir of riches to rags to spiritual and artistic triumph. Neltje's life story is profoundly moving-and instructive. A classic, honest, and beautifully written memoir." – Bill Henderson, editor, Pushcart Prize She was born Neltje Doubleday, yet for years she has used no last name and goes solely by Neltje. Her grandfather started Doubleday Page, which over the years became Doubleday Publishing. Her father Nelson, Doubleday, expanded the company and hoped his son Nelson would follow his father’s passion. At eighteen Neltje married John Sargent, Sr. who would go on to become the President and Chief Executive of Doubleday. Years later her brother Nelson Doubleday took the company helm. The life she recounts in her memoir NORTH OF CRAZY (St. Martin’s Press, 2016, $25.99) is one of great passion, sadness, determination, and courage. "A rich and often mercurial story of a rich and often mercurial life. Neltje's voice is fresh, original, entirely unaffected. Whether she writes of child abuse, abusive alcoholics, cheats, crazy poets, new love, ruined love, painting, or marching to Selma, Alabama, she does it straight from the heart. Hers is a frank history, an adventure, hard-earned, not at all pretty, and fascinating. Here is the story of a woman who had to fight just about everyone along her way to get what she wanted and needed, especially love and independence. And in the end, in her own way, she succeeds." – Brad Watson, author of Miss Jane: A Novel Neltje was brought up in a moneyed world of cultural prestige with the expectation that she would become a socially-gifted wife and mother. Her childhood was marred by her parent's abandonment and alcoholism; their focus was only on her brother. At age nine the family friend who took her riding

sexually abused her. This secret was to haunt Neltje. Marriage to Sargent seemed to offer an escape, and for a while it did. Their life together was filled with travel, parties and martinifueled evenings entertaining the literati. Theodore Roethke slept in their bathtub and once, during a manic bender, held a knife to Neltje's throat. W. Somerset Maugham offered advice on sex in marriage. Other writers, artists and friends included Daphne du Maurier (who made a pass at Neltje's mother), Raoul Fleishman (co-founder of the New Yorker), Gertrude Lawrence, Oskar Kokoschka (a painter who was a contemporary of Picasso) Bertrand Russell, Georges Simenon, and Bennett Cerf. When her children were aged five and seven, the marriage fell apart. John Sargent’s philandering and her family's power struggles over money had taken their toll. After two years of soul searching Neltje obtained a divorce, put her life together, met a writer /painter from London whom she eventually married and moved her family to Wyoming where her children went to a two room school house. Years later, Neltje led a long battle to have Doubleday Publishing go public. Her mother, brother and Sargent fought back and won partially, but so did Neltje. The tale of how she established herself with two small children in the middle of nowhere includes a second marriage to a man who eventually swindled her out of money and almost wrested away a beloved Picasso. Her story also showcases her extraordinary attachment to the natural world, “My cabin here at the base of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming fronts on the rising sun yet allows me to watch light fall behind the granite peaks each evening from my living room chair.” Neltje is an abstract expressionist painter having exhibited throughout the Rockies to the sands of Florida. Her latest interest has been in painting huge canvases, ten foot high by thirty feet long evoking her emotional response to the natural world. She's now 82 and plans to go on 108. Neltje spends her weekends on the Little North Fork of Crazy Woman Creek in Wyoming. NORTH OF CRAZY is a memoir as unconventional and courageous as its author. Every Thursday night is Game Night at This House of Books! Every week on Thursday night, we clear the tables and break out the tabletop games, and we invite you to join us! Take this opportunity to play with fellow gamers, both young and old, seasoned experts and newbies alike. We’re happy to engage you in an intense game or sit back and teach you how to play. We get all types, and you’re sure to find your match! Not seasoned on the newest games? No problem! Not only can we teach you the ways, but we’re also happy to sit down and play a game of chess, go, backgammon, boggle, whatever classic no matter how far back you like. Be adventurous, try out the newest stuff; our staff is always happy to help teach, as are the customers we draw in. Already have a gaming group, but you’re curious about using us as a base of operations? We’re happy to host! Bring to your party and delve your dungeons, raise your cities, solve your mysteries, whatever game you like to host!

COLT FORD

“I won’t back up/I won’t back down/I’ve been raised up to stand my ground” “Answer to No One” Colt Ford’s story is so improbable, it could well be the subject for one of his songs, and indeed his autobiography is laced through his music on the five albums he’s released on his Average Joes Entertainment label over the past, from his 2008 debut, Ride Through the Country, to 2010’s Chicken & Biscuits, 2011’s Every Chance I Get, 2012’s Declaration of Independence and last year’sThanks for Listening. Answer to No One: The Colt Ford Classics collects 13 tracks from those five – and one from the 2010 Mud Digger compilation – for a complete collection yet of his revolutionary mash-up of good old boy country and the rhythms of hip-hop, a groundbreaking combination. Gregory Alan Isakov

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and calling Colorado home, Gregory Alan Isakov has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. His song-craft lends to deep lyrical masterpieces, with hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen. He has been described as “strong, subtle, a lyrical genius.” Isakov’s most recent album is a collaboration with the Colorado Symphony. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory. org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

11:11 Presents of Montreal Innocence Reaches begins with a query. “How do you identify?” coos a robotic voice over a strikingly modern mix of bright synthpop and surging rave. The question too feels very of its time—as outdated ideas about gender and attraction are being overturned—but it’s also a fair ask whenever of Montreal debuts an album. The project’s 14th LP follows two full decades of mercurial creative mania: swallowing up ‘60s psych-pop, Prince-ly funk, and glammy prog in turn; morphing freely between full-band affair and cloistered confessional booth; comprising lyrics both painfully personal and absurdly fantastical; and recently drawing site-specific inspiration from culture capitals like San Francisco or New York City. The thread that runs through it all is Athens, GA’s Kevin Barnes, and Innocence Reaches finds him at his most light-hearted in years, working a Parisian stint, Top 40 sounds, and his newfound single status into the kaleidoscopic swirl. Even as he continues to sift the sonic and emotional detritus of his past, Barnes sums up his current mood in the opener’s title: “let’s relate.” The most immediate surprise is the sound. Innocence Reaches is touched by contemporary electronica, indie pop, and EDM. For the first time in his career, Barnes tuned into now. “Forever I’ve been detached from current music,” he says. “I got into this bubble of only being in some other time period. I came up picking apart the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and symphonic pieces. But last year, I was hearing Jack Ü, Chairlift, Arca, and others, thinking about low end and sound collage. It was an extra layer to geek out on.” Paris helped with that. Barnes lived in a friend’s studio for two weeks. It was in an apartment complex and, as he prefers to work at night, he couldn’t thrash loud instruments for fear of noise complaints from the neighbors. But the in-house arsenal of vintage synthesizers and drum machines was fair game—check the skittering beats of “a sport and a pastime” and thick hum of “chap pilot.” By day, Barnes wandered Père Lachaise Cemetery, sat at cafés and wrote poems, read Jeans Ganet and Cocteau, or eavesdropped on conversations he couldn’t translate. “Being in that place where no one looks at me twice and I can’t even understand the language was like entering a parallel universe,” recalls Barnes. “It was cathartic and inspiring to amputate myself from my normal life and feel like an individual outside of all the baggage and memories.” Enjoying anonymity, he sorted through the inner wreckage left by his divorce two years prior, and took stock of the briefer relationships since. “my fair lady” bids adieu to a familiar figure over sax-streaked disco-funk, but we soon meet Sarah from Detroit on darkwave dream “ambassador bridge,” and Gabrielle the Athenian Beach Goth amid the trappy spaceglitch of “trashed Exes.” In “les chants de maldoror,” our hero cooly declares, “We only act nicely when we’re ruining hotel beds/I greeted you in a hundred doorways.”

Pub Station • April 19 Innocence Reaches continues of Montreal’s recent autobiographical streak, which finds Barnes “fetishizing reality,” as he puts it. But he’s concerned with a broader reality as well. “it’s different for girls” is an exploration of the “dilemme féminin”. Combining Daft Punk’s aptitude for groove with LCD Soundsystem’s wit—an endlessly quotable track that has Barnes outlining the dangers inherent in binary gendering: “It’s different for girls, from when they are children they’re depersonalized, aggressively objectified...” and later Barnes sings “It’s different for girls, they are mercurial creatures, not a masculine dissonance or sexual currency”. The song is less feminine anthem and more pop exegesis of societal codes. “though some women are demons all of them are God”. Indeed. Apropos, Innocence Reaches’ cover design was an attempt by a new firsttime father—Kevin’s brother David—to express his “wonderment for the female anatomy.” And the aforementioned “let’s relate” was indeed inspired by trans issues, a subject dear to Barnes’ heart. “I have a history of gender-bending in performances, but that’s also always been a part of my identity as a human,” he says. “I’m thankful to have an outlet for that, to express that and not get chased out of town or beat up. I think we’re moving in the right direction now.” The song is a call to find common ground in simply being human: “I like that you like you/I think that you’re great/I want to relate,” he sings cheerily. Innocence Reaches features darker moments to be sure—isolation, anger, indifference, and the feeling that, like a Truffaut film, madness lurks just outside the frame—but as Barnes explains, “Epiphany comes from breakdown. If you can stay open and vulnerable, the nebulous becomes transparent. That’s one of the magical aspects of writing from personal life.” Sometimes you’ve gotta intentionally court a little chaos in order to make one of the best, weirdest, brightest, catchiest, and most inventive albums in your already incredible catalog.

Two Bit Franks in concert at Harper & Madison Acoustic Bluegrass/Americana four-piece band will be performing at Harper & Madison on Friday, April 21. John Lowell (guitar & vocals), Tom Murphy (mandolin & vocals), Jeff Shouse (banjo) and special guest Wes Horton (standup bass) present a relaxed set of original, traditional and obscure music that changes each night. The members of the Two Bit Franks have collectively and individually traveled the world playing their music. The band has performed at the Targhee Bluegrass Festival in Alta, Wyoming, the River Roots Festival in Missoula, has been a constant favorite at the Big Grass festival in Big Sky, and numerous shows all over the region. Lowell has toured and taught music extensively throughout the US, UK, Canada and Europe, and Murphy often joins him in Europe as a member of the John Lowell Band. Wes Horton will be sitting in on bass for this special night of music and laughter. Horton is nearing the end of his second contract in Billings with Phillips 66, which makes this night even more special. Having been in the Billings music scene for the last two years, he leaves to return to Nashville in June. “I’ve known these guys for a long time, and I’m excited about playing

with them on the 21st. It’s going to be a great show!,” said Horton. “There’s nothing like playing with a bunch of good musicians who also are your friends,” said Lowell from his home in Livingston. “We always play each song a little bit differently than the last time we played it, and have a great time doing it.” “John is the primary songwriter and singer, but I write instrumental tunes that challenge the band. You never know what these guys are going to do on any one of them,” mandolinist Tom Murphy added. “It keeps things fresh.” Harper & Madison is located at 3115 10th Avenue North. The evening starts with a cocktail hour with a no-host bar at 6:00 pm, with wine, beer, and handcrafted cocktails from the Edgar Bar. The music of the Two Bit Franks starts at 7:00 and will go until 9:00 or so. Seating is limited to 50 seats. Tickets are $25 at the door, or can be reserved by calling Harper & Madison at 406-281-8550. 11:11 Presents Carter Winter

Fitting every bit the part of the man in black, Carter Winter is country music’s modern traditionalist. Singing heartfelt and relatable songs landscaping heartbreak and the American dream poured over ice, the singer/songwriter from rural Ohio has seen firsthand the effects of connecting with an audience through a fresh sound that like Carter himself, is surprisingly familiar, yet raw and honest. From behind his guitar and sleeves of tattoos, Carter began playing local bars around his hometown and quickly grew an incredible fan base of loyal listeners from California to the Carolinas. First well-known for his cover songs of artists that inspired him early on (Garth Brooks, George Strait), Carter’s ability to take three chords and his own truth and deliver a compelling live performance has contributed to the incredible success of Some Kind of Fire, his first independent six-song release.

Pub Station • April 15 With his rich, traditional country vocal and compelling live performance, Carter has gained recognition from some of the biggest names in country music and shared the stage with artists such as Sam Hunt, Chase Rice and Travis Tritt. Recently completing his second studio album with multi Grammy Awardwinning producer Chad Carlson (Taylor Swift, Chase Rice, Cole Swindell) and producer Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts), Carter Winter’s sophomore release The Whiskey In Me makes a solid entry into country music that firmly establishes his bad boy brand as a natural force in country music.

22 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
