NOVA Center for the Performing Arts announces 2017-2018 season!
NOVA Center for the Performing Arts’ artistic committee and managing producer Dodie Rife have announced its 201718 season! NOVA has picked productions that will fit this year’s theme of, “Around the World!” The season will have 10 productions including 4 mainstage theater productions (Mouse Trap, Quilters, Celtic Christmas, and The Complete History of America (Abridged)), 4 youth shows (Madeline, Brundibar, Gulliver’s Travels, and School House Rock), and 2 operas ( Festival of One-Act Operas, and Pirates of Penzance), NOVA’s youth conservatory first travels to Germany in October 2017 with Brundibár, the youth opera about children banding together to save their sick mother. In January, audiences will travel to fantastic places such as Lilliput and Laguda with Gulliver’s Travels. NOVA will leave the land of fantasy to visit Paris with Madeline in April. Finally, the youth conservatory will end the season with Schoolhouse Rock in July. NOVA’s mainstage productions begin in America with a production of The Complete History of America (Abridged) in September. These very talented actors of the Reduced Shakespeare Company tackle such controversial questions as: Who really discovered America? Why did Abe Lincoln free the slaves? How many Democrats does it take to screw in a lightbulb? History is normally written by the winners… now it’s the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s turn. Then NOVA audience members take a trip across the pond with Agatha Christie’s “whodunnit” Mousetrap in November followed by the world premiere of Celtic Christmas in December. NOVA will return back to the States in February with the Rankin File Production of The Quilters. NOVA Center for the Performing Arts musical and opera schedule will include The Festival of One-Act Operas (Bon Appetit, The Telephone, and The Lantern Marriage) in October, and the mainstage production of Pirates of Penzance in March. The NOVA Center for the Performing Arts season will also include fundraisers: Reds, White, & Brews (September 7), Auction of Arias (October 22), Love of the heArts (February 17), and Opera Fest (March 17). With Danielle Egnew. You are born with specific gifts for a reason – it’s time to embrace those gifts! With so much energetic change during this ascension, people are recognizing that their “careers” may not be a “fit” for their own personal design. What happens when we realize the career we’ve dedicated 10, 20, or even 30 years toward – is no longer emotionally or socially fulfilling? Perhaps it never has been, yet we’ve needed something to “pay the bills”. Barton’s Books, 223 N. 29th St. Billings (406) 252-4398

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.
American Indian Collection
A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.
Landmarks Gallery
This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory. org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

The Lil’ Smokies
With their roots submerged in the thick buttery mud of traditional bluegrass, The Lil’ Smokies have sonically blossomed into a leading player in the progressive acoustic sphere, creating a new and wholly unique, melody driven sound of their own. The quintet, from Missoula, Mont, has been hard at work, writing, touring and playing to an ever-growing fan base for the past 6 years. The fruits of their labor recently culminating with wins at the 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Momentum Award for Best Band and at the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass festival band competition. In 2013 the band also won The Northwest String Summit Band Competition. With a unique blend of traditional bluegrass, newgrass, innumerable unique originals, sheer raw energy, and exquisite musicianship, The Lil’ Smokies weave seamlessly through genres, leaving behind melodies you’ll be singing to yourself for days and a jaw you’ll have to pick up off the floor. This five-piece bluegrass ensemble features Andy Dunnigan (dobro), Scott Parker (upright bass), Matt Cornette (banjo), Jake Simpson (fiddle) and Matt Rieger (guitar). Bonnie Raitt Dig in Deep Tour on September 6
Grammy-Awarded recording artist Bonnie Raitt kicks off Alberta Bair Theater’s 2017-18 Season on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets, $101.50, $79.50, go on sale Friday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the ABT Box office, located at 2801 Third Avenue North, and by phone at (406) 256-6052 and online at www.albertabairtheater.org. “We’re incredibly excited to be co-promoting this performance of Bonnie Raitt’s Dig in Deep 2017 tour with CMoore Live and opening our 30th Season with such a powerhouse performer,” said Jody Grant, programming director of Alberta Bair Theater. With Dig In Deep, her twentieth album, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bonnie Raitt comes out swinging. The follow-up to 2012's triumphant Slipstream , the Grammy-winning, Top Ten-charting first release on her own Redwing Records label, the new album illustrates the delicate balance of consistency and risk-taking that has defined Raitt's remarkable career for more than 45 years. Notably, Raitt has writing credits on five of the album's songs, the most original compositions she has contributed to a record since 1998's Fundamental. "I was really inspired to come up with some songs that went with grooves that I missed playing in my live show, and to dig deeper into some topics I hadn't yet mined,” she said. "I don't write easily and can get distracted, but remembering how satisfying it was to come up with something new of my own, and writing with guys I love — like my longtime bandmates George Marinelli and Jon Cleary — I found that once the wheels started turning, the music came pouring out." Continuing a long-standing tradition in conjunction with The Guacamole Fund, Bonnie will donate one dollar from every ticket purchased to grassroots local, regional, and national organizations whose work focuses on safe and sustainable energy, social justice and human rights, environmental protection, and blues/music education. Alberta Bair Theater’s full 2017-18 Season, its 30th, will be announced on May 25.

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
