Audubon Center celebrates 24Th Annual International Migratory Bird Day “Helping Birds Along the Way” is the theme for this year’s International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), the only international education program that celebrates the migration of nearly 350 bird species between their nesting habitats in North America and wintering grounds in Latin America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This year IMBD will celebrate the importance of stopover sites, crucial refuges where migratory birds rest and refuel before continuing their remarkable journeys. Because these flights can stretch thousands of kilometers across continents and oceans, the birds depend upon a handful of resource-rich and strategically located habitats to acquire the energy-rich fat stores they need to survive. This will be the second year that the Center has offered birdrelated programming on this weekend. This year’s event, from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 13th, features bird-themed crafts and activities, guided introductory bird walks on our 54acre site and nearby Norm’s Island, and a Natural History garage sale. Event is free, and families are welcome. “We are excited to offer this event on a weekend of so much celebration in the Billings area,” says Carolyn Sevier, Director at the Montana Audubon Center. “Games, crafts, and outdoor activities are all great ways to spend time with family outdoors… and to learn something about birds, as well!” From coastal estuaries and marshes to forests and grasslands, stopover sites support millions of migratory shorebirds, waterfowl, and songbirds. “Stopover habitats are critical to the survival of birds that travel long distances,” says Greg Butcher, Migratory Bird Program Coordinator for the U.S. Forest Service’s Office of International Programs. “Providing healthy habitats during migration is essential to migratory birds.” The Yellowstone River corridor is a perfect example of this habitat. In fact, while riparian areas make up less than four percent of Montana’s landscape, they provide habitat for 85 percent of its wildlife, including 371 of the state’s 422 bird species. Each year IMBD explores a different aspect of migratory birds. In 2017, participants at more than 700 locations from Argentina to Canada will learn how protecting and restoring stopover sites can benefit migratory birds, the symbolic harbingers of the seasons. “Through International Migratory Bird Day, we work to engage people of all ages to make their homes and communities safe places for birds,” says Susan Bonfield1, Executive Director of Environment for the Americas, the coordinator of the international event. “There are many small actions that people can take to help protect migratory birds.” One way that people can help birds along their way, says Bonfield, is to transform their backyards into safe stopover sites by planting native vegetation, providing fresh water, and keeping cats indoors. Although IMBD is traditionally celebrated in Canada and the U.S. on the second Saturday in May, in reality every day is bird day, and programs, festivals, and other events occur throughout the year, whenever it works best for organizers—and the birds. “Ultimately, the goal of IMBD is to connect people to nature through birds,” says Laura Koloski, Program Coordinator for Environment for the Americas.
MSUB announces new Drone Program Drones for Dummies takes place May 20 and Droneography held July 8 Montana State University Billings Extended Campus is launching a new drone program this spring. Director of the Extended Campus Kevin Nemeth says the first class, Drones for Dummies, will be for beginners, giving them a chance to get educated on the basics of drone techniques and related laws. A second class, Droneography, will be a more advanced class and is slated for summer. “People in our community are already using drones for recreational and business purposes and Extended Campus’ goal is to provide this enthusiastic community with the necessary tools to succeed,” Nemeth said. Drones for Dummies will introduce individuals to the basics of safely operating drones. Through demonstration and hands-on practice, participants will leave with a better understanding and more confidence working with a drone. Each class member will receive a drone equipped with a built-in camera. After successfully taking the class, participants will be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration as a certified hobbyist. The instructor, Aaron Wilson, is the founder of Aaron’s Drones of Montana and is a seasoned drone operator, video editor, and is knowledgeable about the legalities of drone usage. Drones for Dummies will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 20, 2017, in Alterowitz Gym on the University Campus. Cost is $189 and registration is now open. A second, more advanced class,
Droneography, focusing on shooting photos and videos with drones is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., July 8. Cost is $149 and registration is now open. The class will begin in Liberal Arts room 121 on the University Campus and proceed to Riverfront Park for the flying portion. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. “We’re excited to offer this program series to a wide variety of individuals interested in drones,” said Nemeth. “Drones are increasing in popularity and the number of them shipped annually is expected to reach 67.9 million by 2021. They will create new opportunities within our community and we want to take an active part in making that happened.” Droneography is for those interested in learning how to use a drone to take photos and videos. This class will help individuals produce a better final product through basic techniques and editing. The instructor, Theodore Hampton, is an independent filmmaker and photographer, involved in projects ranging from family and business photos, to commercial work, wedding films and design. For more information about the suggested equipment needed for the class, click here. Nemeth shared they are hoping to add additional classes for more advanced and professional users in the future. Those interested in learning more about these programs can visit www. msubillings.edu/extendedcampus or email ECINFO@msubillings.edu.

Ever since winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, Trout Steak Revival has quickly become the quintessential Colorado string band. The band won an Emmy Award for a soundtrack they contributed to a Rocky Mountain PBS. They have collaborated with school children in mentoring programs in both Denver and the mountain communities. Their music is featured on Bank of Colorado’s radio and television advertisements. Most recently, Westword named them Denver’s Best Bluegrass Band and they were nominated as a Momentum Band of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Defined more by expressive songwriting and heartfelt harmonies rather than any one genre, Trout Steak Revival crosses over and blends the bounds of folk, indie, bluegrass, and roots evoking its own style of Americana. With five band members
Pinky and the Floyd calls Montana home, but has recently been called the Northwestʼs Hottest Pink Floyd Tribute Band! Pinky was founded in 2007 and has seen very few personnel changes over the years. Instead, this grass-roots effort has exploded in popularity, selling out shows across the state. They put on an amazing live show thatʼs both note-for-note and improvisational but itʼs their superb musicianship that sets them apart from other Tribute Bands. The energy and stage presence is unprecedented! All Pinky members are professional working musicians, assembled from genres across the board, calling their expertise to produce what has clearly proven to be a successful musical venture. All told, there are over 20 bands that the members of Pinky and the Floyd are part of, spanning genres from Americana & Vintage Swing to Hip Hop, Jazz,

The Lil’ Smokies
With their roots submerged in the thick buttery mud of traditional bluegrass, The Lil’ Smokies have sonically blossomed into a leading player in the progressive acoustic sphere, creating a new and wholly unique, melody driven sound of their own. The quintet, from Missoula, Mont, has been hard at work, writing, touring and playing to an ever-growing fan base for the past 6 years. The fruits of their labor recently culminating with wins at the 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Momentum Award for Best Band and at the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass festival band competition. In 2013 the band also won The Northwest String Summit Band Competition. With a unique blend of traditional bluegrass, newgrass, innumerable unique originals, sheer raw energy, and exquisite musicianship, The Lil’ Smokies weave seamlessly through genres, leaving behind melodies you’ll be singing to yourself for days and a jaw you’ll have to pick up off the floor. This five-piece bluegrass ensemble features Andy Dunnigan (dobro), Scott Parker (upright bass), Matt Cornette (banjo), Jake Simpson (fiddle) and Matt Rieger (guitar). Partners with Preservation Society to Collect & Display Baseball History Baseball enthusiasts in Montana will soon have a new place to enjoy the national pastime. The Billings Baseball Preservation Society and Yellowstone County Museum have come together to collect, house, and exhibit relics of Yellowstone County’s baseball past. Collecting is already underway, and the opening of a new display at Yellowstone County Museum is set to coincide with the Billings American Legion Hall of Fame Induction and Banquet on Saturday, April 29th. The display will showcase a Billings jersey and signed baseball cap from the 2011 Little League World Series, memorabilia from Dave McNally’s inspiring career as a Billings American Legion player and major league Baltimore Orioles star, and, of course, the man who mentored so many Billings baseball players, Coach Ed Bayne. A Billings native, McNally was named Montana’s Athlete of the Century by Sports Illustrated in 1999. In the course of his
remarkable career, he led Billings to two of its four appearances in the American Legion World Series before playing 14 major league seasons. “The rich history of baseball, depicting the thousands of ball players who have passed through our community, is something that should be memorialized for generations to come,” says Sam Studiner, Secretary of the Billings Baseball Preservation Society. Yellowstone County Museum and the BBPS are dedicated to preserving those memories. From the little league to the majors, there will be something for all museum visitors to enjoy. “Billings is a baseball town,” says YCM curator, Kathy Barton. “It’s such a large part of our culture, it’s about time we recognize and celebrate it in a museum space of its own!” The display at Yellowstone County Museum is open now and will remain through the end of summer, when it will be expanded into a full exhibit.
Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.
American Indian Collection
A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Their shared love of Walt Disney sound tracks and Amadeus Mozart makes its way into every performance. ABT’s Orser Outstanding Performances Series is presented by Eileen Orser and this performance by Well-Strung is sponsored by Arts Without Boundaries, by the generosity of The Fortin Foundation, and Yellowstone Public Radio. Tickets, $30 and $16 for students with valid I.D., are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of 3rd Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406-256-6052 (box office hours are Monday through Saturday, 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m. ) and/or online at www.albertabairtheater.org.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: In the Footsteps of My Ancestors
March 23–July 16, 2017 • Montana Gallery This is the first major solo exhibition of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s work in her native state of Montana in over a generation. In keeping with the YAM’s Montana Masters series goals, Smith is a mature, late-career artist with extraordinary aesthetic, intellectual, and curatorial achievements to her credit. The evolution of her lifelong investigations is a cornerstone of this exhibition. TITLE SPONSORS: Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Arts, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
Art in Action: Marking Time
March 23–August 6, 2017 • NW Projects Gallery Make your own mark at the YAM as we continue with the second in a series of participatory exhibitions, Art in Action, designed to activate and demonstrate museum visitors’ curiosity and creativity. Visitors will leave their marks on the walls of the YAM’s Northwest Projects Gallery, signifying their presence in the world of imagination. Participants may choose to visit over and over in order to interact with the marks left behind by others. CONTRIBUTING SPONSORS: Anonymous, Wells Fargo
Archaea: Rosane Volchan O’Conor
March 23–August 6, 2017 • Charles M. Bair Family Gallery Rosane Volchan O’Conor’s unique installation is inspired by the Yellowstone’s history and micro-biome. Using “archaea”—microscopic organisms that survive in extreme environments—as a focal point, the artist’s immersive installation is suggestive of these forms crawling off the walls, hanging crystalized in space, and mutating into clusters across the floor. Using a variety of conventional and unconventional materials, O’Conor has transformed the YAM’s gallery into a miniature universe. TITLE SPONSORS: Anonymous, Dr. Donald and Carol Roberts

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
