Audubon Center celebrates 24Th Annual International Migratory Bird Day “Helping Birds Along the Way” is the theme for this year’s International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), the only international education program that celebrates the migration of nearly 350 bird species between their nesting habitats in North America and wintering grounds in Latin America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This year IMBD will celebrate the importance of stopover sites, crucial refuges where migratory birds rest and refuel before continuing their remarkable journeys. Because these flights can stretch thousands of kilometers across continents and oceans, the birds depend upon a handful of resource-rich and strategically located habitats to acquire the energy-rich fat stores they need to survive. This will be the second year that the Center has offered birdrelated programming on this weekend. This year’s event, from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 13th, features bird-themed crafts and activities, guided introductory bird walks on our 54acre site and nearby Norm’s Island, and a Natural History garage sale. Event is free, and families are welcome. “We are excited to offer this event on a weekend of so much celebration in the Billings area,” says Carolyn Sevier, Director at the Montana Audubon Center. “Games, crafts, and outdoor activities are all great ways to spend time with family outdoors… and to learn something about birds, as well!” From coastal estuaries and marshes to forests and grasslands, stopover sites support millions of migratory shorebirds, waterfowl, and songbirds. “Stopover habitats are critical to the survival of birds that travel long distances,” says Greg Butcher, Migratory Bird Program Coordinator for the U.S. Forest Service’s Office of International Programs. “Providing healthy habitats during migration is essential to migratory birds.” The Yellowstone River corridor is a perfect example of this habitat. In fact, while riparian areas make up less than four percent of Montana’s landscape, they provide habitat for 85 percent of its wildlife, including 371 of the state’s 422 bird species. Each year IMBD explores a different aspect of migratory birds. In 2017, participants at more than 700 locations from Argentina to Canada will learn how protecting and restoring stopover sites can benefit migratory birds, the symbolic harbingers of the seasons. “Through International Migratory Bird Day, we work to engage people of all ages to make their homes and communities safe places for birds,” says Susan Bonfield1, Executive Director of Environment for the Americas, the coordinator of the international event. “There are many small actions that people can take to help protect migratory birds.” One way that people can help birds along their way, says Bonfield, is to transform their backyards into safe stopover sites by planting native vegetation, providing fresh water, and keeping cats indoors. Although IMBD is traditionally celebrated in Canada and the U.S. on the second Saturday in May, in reality every day is bird day, and programs, festivals, and other events occur throughout the year, whenever it works best for organizers—and the birds. “Ultimately, the goal of IMBD is to connect people to nature through birds,” says Laura Koloski, Program Coordinator for Environment for the Americas.

MSUB announces new Drone Program Drones for Dummies takes place May 20 and Droneography held July 8 Montana State University Billings Extended Campus is launching a new drone program this spring. Director of the Extended Campus Kevin Nemeth says the first class, Drones for Dummies, will be for beginners, giving them a chance to get educated on the basics of drone techniques and related laws. A second class, Droneography, will be a more advanced class and is slated for summer. “People in our community are already using drones for recreational and business purposes and Extended Campus’ goal is to provide this enthusiastic community with the necessary tools to succeed,” Nemeth said. Drones for Dummies will introduce individuals to the basics of safely operating drones. Through demonstration and hands-on practice, participants will leave with a better understanding and more confidence working with a drone. Each class member will receive a drone equipped with a built-in camera. After successfully taking the class, participants will be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration as a certified hobbyist. The instructor, Aaron Wilson, is the founder of Aaron’s Drones of Montana and is a seasoned drone operator, video editor, and is knowledgeable about the legalities of drone usage. Drones for Dummies will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 20, 2017, in Alterowitz Gym on the University Campus. Cost is $189 and registration is now open. A second, more advanced class,

Droneography, focusing on shooting photos and videos with drones is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., July 8. Cost is $149 and registration is now open. The class will begin in Liberal Arts room 121 on the University Campus and proceed to Riverfront Park for the flying portion. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. “We’re excited to offer this program series to a wide variety of individuals interested in drones,” said Nemeth. “Drones are increasing in popularity and the number of them shipped annually is expected to reach 67.9 million by 2021. They will create new opportunities within our community and we want to take an active part in making that happened.” Droneography is for those interested in learning how to use a drone to take photos and videos. This class will help individuals produce a better final product through basic techniques and editing. The instructor, Theodore Hampton, is an independent filmmaker and photographer, involved in projects ranging from family and business photos, to commercial work, wedding films and design. For more information about the suggested equipment needed for the class, click here. Nemeth shared they are hoping to add additional classes for more advanced and professional users in the future. Those interested in learning more about these programs can visit www. msubillings.edu/extendedcampus or email ECINFO@msubillings.edu.

Ever since winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, Trout Steak Revival has quickly become the quintessential Colorado string band. The band won an Emmy Award for a soundtrack they contributed to a Rocky Mountain PBS. They have collaborated with school children in mentoring programs in both Denver and the mountain communities. Their music is featured on Bank of Colorado’s radio and television advertisements. Most recently, Westword named them Denver’s Best Bluegrass Band and they were nominated as a Momentum Band of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Defined more by expressive songwriting and heartfelt harmonies rather than any one genre, Trout Steak Revival crosses over and blends the bounds of folk, indie, bluegrass, and roots evoking its own style of Americana. With five band members all contributing unique lyrics, lead vocals, acoustic instrumentation, and harmonies, Trout Steak Revival delivers memorable tunes to an energetic fanbase that grows hand-inhand with the band. Partners with Preservation Society to Collect & Display Baseball History Baseball enthusiasts in Montana will soon have a new place to enjoy the national pastime. The Billings Baseball Preservation Society and Yellowstone County Museum have come together to collect, house, and exhibit relics of Yellowstone County’s baseball past. Collecting is already underway, and the opening of a new display at Yellowstone County Museum is set to coincide with the Billings American Legion Hall of Fame Induction and Banquet on Saturday, April 29th. The display will showcase a Billings jersey and signed baseball cap from the 2011 Little League World Series, memorabilia from Dave McNally’s inspiring career as a Billings American Legion player and major league Baltimore Orioles star, and, of course, the man who mentored so many Billings baseball players, Coach Ed Bayne. A Billings native, McNally was named Montana’s Athlete of the Century by Sports Illustrated in 1999. In the course of his

remarkable career, he led Billings to two of its four appearances in the American Legion World Series before playing 14 major league seasons. “The rich history of baseball, depicting the thousands of ball players who have passed through our community, is something that should be memorialized for generations to come,” says Sam Studiner, Secretary of the Billings Baseball Preservation Society. Yellowstone County Museum and the BBPS are dedicated to preserving those memories. From the little league to the majors, there will be something for all museum visitors to enjoy. “Billings is a baseball town,” says YCM curator, Kathy Barton. “It’s such a large part of our culture, it’s about time we recognize and celebrate it in a museum space of its own!” The display at Yellowstone County Museum is open now and will remain through the end of summer, when it will be expanded into a full exhibit.

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique

two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory. org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

Everclear: So Much for the Afterglow 20th Anniversary Tour It’s been 20 years since Everclear released their 1997 multiplatinum smash So Much For The Afterglow, yet the album remains a beloved fan favorite, and continues to inspire new generations of musicians & fans today. Bolstered by the record’s enduring popularity, Everclear are about to embark on a highly anticipated tour celebrating its milestone anniversary, with plans to perform the album front to back, including some tracks the band has never played live. As the band’s third full-length, So Much For The Afterglow built upon the momentum of 1995’s Sparkle And Fade, with a slew of unforgettable songs that permeated MTV and alternative rock radio. The album—which remains Everclear’s best-selling release to date—quickly won over listeners with its trademark combination of melody, rhythmic energy, evocative lyrics and thundering guitar crunch. “It makes me feel really good when I read a lot of what people still think about the album, and how many bands have been influenced by it—how much impact it had on them—and I think about how much impact it had on me, in a different way of course,” says singer-guitarist Art Alexakis. “It’s still a thing; it’s still relevant and real 20 years later.” Formed by Alexakis in 1991 in Portland, Oregon, Everclear has enjoyed a lengthy career spanning 10 studio releases, numerous videos, thousands of shows and accolades that include a 1998 Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental, for the Afterglow track “El Distorto de Melodica.” Like a true survivor, Alexakis has soldiered on through multiple lineup changes over the years: During the Afterglow era, the band also included Craig Montoya on bass and Greg Eklund on drums; the forthcoming anniversary tour features current Everclear members Davey French (guitar), Freddy Herrera (bass) and drummer Jake Margolis. In recent years Alexakis also created and runs the annual Summerland Tour, which features a package of popular ’90s alt rock bands. Amid all of Everclear’s accomplishments, the Afterglow period remains a pivotal moment. After enjoying a taste of success with Sparkle And Fade and its still-prevalent hit single “Santa Monica,” Everclear returned to the studio in 1996 more determined than ever to perfect their sound. By the end of the year the band had already completed an album, tentatively titled Pure White Evil, but after one particularly blunt conversation with an A&R executive, the singer/ guitarist/songwriter Alexakis knew there was more work still ahead. “He told me, ‘It’s an ok record, but it’s not going to do what you want it to do, and it’s not the best record you can make’,” Alexakis recalls. “He said that, and I just knew he was right. I knew I wasn’t digging deep enough.” Alexakis spent roughly the next week living in a New York City hotel, contemplating his next move. He walked the city streets and went to multiple showings of the film Jerry Maguire. Inspired, he went back to his hotel room and started anew, while taking close stock of the existing Pure White Evil material. With the band and label on board with the new plan, Everclear continued to write and refine the new material over the spring of 1997 until Evil morphed into what eventually became So Much For The Afterglow. “Looking back, I remember just how balls-out and brash I was,” Alexakis says. “I just had a vision and after Sparkle I was desperate not to have a sophomore slump and be a one-hit wonder. I was just going forward with my vision and dragging my guys behind me. We just believed that we were on a mission to make a great record. To this day, it’s probably my favorite Everclear album.” Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Afterglow is its visceral, infinitely relatable lyrics, some of which are autobiographical. Although, according to Alexakis, many people think the majority of his songs are. ”I like storytelling…writing from the first person perspective,” says Alexakis. “’Father of Mine’ (the hit single which expresses the singer’s feelings of estrangement and abandonment by his father) and a couple of others are stories from my life.” While other tracks, meanwhile, offer the singer’s wry observations on the world around him. The common thread, and the message that’s most powerful amid all of Alexakis’ lyrical soul baring, is that no matter how hard things get, there can always be better days ahead. “From my perspective, the album told stories of an American life that had gone through ups and downs and still wasn’t 100 percent,” Alexakis says. “I still had to deal with issues like parental abandonment, poverty, abuse and drugs. But even though those things are there, there’s still a light at the end of the tunnel, though it’s hard to see sometimes, and even though the record’s dark

and heavy at times, it convey’s a sense of hope, which is probably why it seemed to connect with a lot of young people at the time, because even though it sucks being a teenager, or in your early 20s…you want to know there’s a chance. I’m an optimist; There’s always an upside somewhere.” Since the album’s release, the songs have taken on a life of their own through the interpretations of listeners, who’ve made their unique personal connections with record. However some of the tracks still remain deeply personal to Alexakis, and there will likely be emotional onstage moments during the upcoming tour. For this reason, some Afterglow tracks will be performed live for the first time in years, if not ever. “There are still songs on this record that I have a hard time singing, because I get so emotional,” says Alexakis. “We don’t play them a lot, ever, but we will on this tour; we’re playing all the songs. ‘Why I Don’t Believe in God,’ is an especially hard one to sing. That’s a song about my mom.” Other tracks promise to be great fun. The kinetic energy of So Much For The Afterglow makes much of it ideal for concert stages, and Alexakis is eager to share and experience the material again in a live setting along with fans. On a personal level for Alexakis, who’s a married father of two daughters, it will undoubtedly be a much different tour here in 2017 than when the band was young and hungry and just promoting the album for the first time. But some things—namely the remarkable quality of the songs and the enthusiasm fans have for the record—not only remain steadfast, they’ve even continued to grow and appreciate over time. “’California King’ is a blast to play,” he says. “The harder rock songs, like “One Hit Wonder,” are going to be fun to play. We’ve been breaking that one out in rehearsals over the last couple months; it’s tight and sounds really good. I still like playing the hits, too. I love the way people respond and sing along with the songs. That’s something songwriters never get tired of.” It’s likely that crowds will have plenty to sing about when the So Much For The Afterglow Tour—which also includes ’90s compatriots Fastball and Vertical Horizon—hits a nearby venue later this year. Alexakis says that the roughly 90-minute set will also include other favorites from Everclear’s back catalogue, but will feature So Much For The Afterglow in its glorious entirety, performed with the loving respect it deserves. Beyond his own gratification, Alexakis says the forthcoming Afterglow tour is very much a gift—and a thank you—to fans of the album. “A lot of people really identified with the songs off this record and it meant something important to them,” Alexakis says. “That means a lot to me, that I’ve had a positive impact in someone’s life. As a dad, and a person who’s constantly trying to do the right thing, that’s big. It just makes me feel really good that people connected to what we were doing, and that it still means something to them. What more can a guy in a rock and roll band ask for?”

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
