THE ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN FILM FESTIVAL TIPPET RISE ART CENTER, SEPTEMBER 22 AND 23, 2017 SCHEDULE
Friday, September 22 at 4:30 p.m. at the Olivier Music Barn
Saturday, September 23 at 12:45 p.m. in the Olivier Music Barn
Director: Elissa Brown, 46 min / 2016 / USA The Oyler House: Richard Neutra's Desert Retreat Director: Mike Dorsey, 46 min / 2012 / USA Windshield: A Vanished Vision is an intimate portrait of a patrician couple; Richard Neutra, a leading modern architect; and the ill-fated house they struggled to create. The Oyler House: Richard Neutra's Desert Retreat tells the story of a humble government employee in the tiny desert town of Lone Pine, California, who in 1959 asked Richard Neutra, by then world-famous, to design his modest family home.
Directors: Katherine Knight & Marcia Connolly, 54 min / 2014 / Canada Sun Streaming Director: Kathy Kasic, 5 min / 2016 / USA Strange and Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island captures a bold architecture project on Fogo Island, Newfoundland, that embraces the excitement of living on the edge, both in relation to nature and to contemporary design. Sun Streaming is a poetic film about the stunning setting of Tippet Rise Art Center, where large-scale sculptures reach up to the stars, and where music captures light from our own sun, sending it across the landscape and back out into the universe.
Friday, September 22 at 7 p.m. at the Olivier Music Barn
Saturday, September 23 at 2:15 p.m. at Tiara
Director: Thomas Riedelsheimer, 93 min / 2017 / Scotland & Germany Pioneer | Stephen Talasnik Director: Taylor Fraser, 6 min / 2016 / USA Sixteen years after the release of his groundbreaking film Rivers and Tides – Andy Goldsworthy, director Thomas Riedelsheimer returns to work with the artist. This new film follows the artist as he explores the impact of the years on himself and his art, which has become more fragile and personal and yet at the same time sterner and tougher, sometimes demanding the use of massive machinery and crews. Pioneer is a site-specific, large-scale wooden sculpture commissioned by Tippet Rise Art Center from artist Stephen Talasnik. This documentary examines the sculpture's journey from inspiration to completion, including problem solving, fabrication, and installation.
KCRW DnA: Design and Architecture host Frances Anderton in conversation with Tippet Rise co-founder Peter Halstead and artist Stephen Talasnik about the creation of site-specific works for Tippet Rise.

MSUB announces new Drone Program Drones for Dummies takes place May 20 and Droneography held July 8 Montana State University Billings Extended Campus is launching a new drone program this spring. Director of the Extended Campus Kevin Nemeth says the first class, Drones for Dummies, will be for beginners, giving them a chance to get educated on the basics of drone techniques and related laws. A second class, Droneography, will be a more advanced class and is slated for summer. “People in our community are already using drones for recreational and business purposes and Extended Campus’ goal is to provide this enthusiastic community with the necessary tools to succeed,” Nemeth said. Drones for Dummies will introduce individuals to the basics of safely operating drones. Through demonstration and hands-on practice, participants will leave with a better understanding and more confidence working with a drone. Each class member will receive a drone equipped with a built-in camera. After successfully taking the class, participants will be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration as a certified hobbyist. The instructor, Aaron Wilson, is the founder of Aaron’s Drones of Montana and is a seasoned drone operator, video editor, and is knowledgeable about the legalities of drone usage. Drones for Dummies will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 20, 2017, in Alterowitz Gym on the University Campus. Cost is $189 and registration is now open.
A second, more advanced class, Droneography, focusing on shooting photos and videos with drones is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., July 8. Cost is $149 and registration is now open. The class will begin in Liberal Arts room 121 on the University Campus and proceed to Riverfront Park for the flying portion. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. “We’re excited to offer this program series to a wide variety of individuals interested in drones,” said Nemeth. “Drones are increasing in popularity and the number of them shipped annually is expected to reach 67.9 million by 2021. They will create new opportunities within our community and we want to take an active part in making that happened.” Droneography is for those interested in learning how to use a drone to take photos and videos. This class will help individuals produce a better final product through basic techniques and editing. The instructor, Theodore Hampton, is an independent filmmaker and photographer, involved in projects ranging from family and business photos, to commercial work, wedding films and design. For more information about the suggested equipment needed for the class, click here. Nemeth shared they are hoping to add additional classes for more advanced and professional users in the future. Those interested in learning more about these programs can visit www. msubillings.edu/extendedcampus or email ECINFO@msubillings.edu.

Trout Steak Revival
Ever since winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, Trout Steak Revival has quickly become the quintessential Colorado string band. The band won an Emmy Award for a soundtrack they contributed to a Rocky Mountain PBS. They have collaborated with school children in mentoring programs in both Denver and the mountain communities. Their music is featured on Bank of Colorado’s radio and television advertisements. Most recently, Westword named them Denver’s Best Bluegrass Band and they were nominated as a Momentum Band of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Defined more by expressive songwriting and heartfelt harmonies rather than any one genre, Trout Steak Revival crosses over and blends the bounds of folk, indie, bluegrass, and roots evoking its own style of Americana. With five band members all contributing unique lyrics, lead vocals, acoustic instrumentation, and harmonies, Trout Steak Revival delivers memorable tunes to an energetic fanbase that grows hand-inhand with the band. Alive After 5 w/ Pinky at the Floyd
Pinky and the Floyd calls Montana home, but has recently been called the Northwestʼs Hottest Pink Floyd Tribute Band! Pinky was founded in 2007 and has seen very few personnel changes over the years. Instead, this grass-roots effort has exploded in popularity, selling out shows across the state. They put on an amazing live show thatʼs both note-for-note and improvisational but itʼs their superb musicianship that sets them apart from other Tribute Bands. The energy
and stage presence is unprecedented! All Pinky members are professional working musicians, assembled from genres across the board, calling their expertise to produce what has clearly proven to be a successful musical venture. All told, there are over 20 bands that the members of Pinky and the Floyd are part of, spanning genres from Americana & Vintage Swing to Hip Hop, Jazz, Country, Salsa, Funk, Rock, Blues and on and on… They see their varied backgrounds as strength in diversity, knowing that each member “…unconsciously affects the overall sound. As players, musicians & artists, whatever youʼve got comes with you…” And between the 10 of them, they have a lot! Pinky and the Floyd has a big sound and is an experience not soon forgotten. You can expect albums in their entirety, and a little something from every Floyd genre- from Syd Barrett to Division Bell, and everything in between! Tell your friends, itʼs a party! The Lil’ Smokies
With their roots submerged in the thick buttery mud of traditional bluegrass, The Lil’ Smokies have sonically blossomed into a leading player in the progressive acoustic sphere, creating a new and wholly unique, melody driven sound of their own. The
quintet, from Missoula, Mont, has been hard at work, writing, touring and playing to an ever-growing fan base for the past 6 years. The fruits of their labor recently culminating with wins at the 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Momentum Award for Best Band and at the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass festival band competition. In 2013 the band also won The Northwest String Summit Band Competition. With a unique blend of traditional bluegrass, newgrass, innumerable unique originals, sheer raw energy, and exquisite musicianship, The Lil’ Smokies weave seamlessly through genres, leaving behind melodies you’ll be singing to yourself for days and a jaw you’ll have to pick up off the floor. This five-piece bluegrass ensemble features Andy Dunnigan (dobro), Scott Parker (upright bass), Matt Cornette (banjo), Jake Simpson (fiddle) and Matt Rieger (guitar). The Two Tracks
Formed in 2014, The Two Tracks are based out of Sheridan, Wyoming, at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains. From rock’n roll to country, from bluegrass to folk, the music is expertly crafted, addictive Americana. Their harmony rich songs are often cello-infused with a high energy groove. Throw in life on the high plains and a penchant for lost love story telling. The group's first album (self-titled) was voted #1 Album in Wyoming by WyNPR. It features original tracks by Julie Szewc on guitar/vocals. Joining her are David Huebner on cello, electric guitar, and vocals, Fred Serna on drums/ percussion, and Russell Smith on upright bass. Guests on the album include legendary Nashville pedal steel guitarist Bruce Bouton (Garth Brooks). "Their eponymous debut album finds them creating an instant connection... the sprightly, spunky “Old Victrola,” the good natured “Bird’s Eye View” and the lively take on the traditional standard “Wayfaring Stranger” finds them accelerating the energy...in truth there’s not a single offering here that doesn’t engage the listener practically from the get go." - No Depression They have spent many a day on the road since the debut album release in Spring 2016, and were recently back in the studio to record their second album with producer Will Kimbrough at The Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville. Look for the new album Spring 2017! "The Two Tracks record rural warmth... infusing their tunes with a feel for the open spaces of The West.” - The Alternate Root

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.
American Indian Collection
A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.
Landmarks Gallery
This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique
two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory. org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

On view through August 6, 2017 Charles M. Bair Family Gallery Rosane Volchan O’Conor’s unique installation is inspired by the Yellowstone’s history and microbiome. Using “archaea”—microscopic organisms that survive in extreme environments—as a focal point, the artist’s immersive installation is suggestive of these forms crawling off the walls, hanging crystalized in space, and mutating into clusters across the floor. Using a variety of conventional and unconventional materials, O’Conor has transformed the YAM’s gallery into a miniature universe. TITLE SPONSORS: Anonymous, Dr. Donald and Carol Roberts

Pictograph Cave State Park
Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and 45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of
the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

May 18 • 7:30 p.m. $35, $25, $16 Alberta Bair Theater
Artrageous at the Alberta Bair Theater A long time ago (1980’s) in a land far away (Vancouver, Canada) a troupe of misfits decided they wanted to see the world. Together they started the “All and Everything Theater”, a nonprofit Children’s Theater focusing on Children’s Entertainment, Street Theater and Lifesized Bunraku Puppetry. In the late 80’s on Christmas Day, their theater building with all their props and puppets burnt to the ground. Instead of packing it in, they started down a new road. This time taking to the streets and The Pink Flamingos (the flame colored bird, standing solidly on one leg and rising from the ashes) Their musical troupe has performed for the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Steve Forbes, General Colin Powell… and in venues and events all over the world from India to Thailand, Paris to Austria. Their journey has lead them far and wide around the world and back again. Performing at over 2000+ events in their History. As people who live and breathe the Arts, Creativity, Community, and Inspiration, they have decided to go back to their roots and share their passion with the world as Artrageous. A Show that focuses on all the things they believe in and everything that got them to this place. Art, Music, Theater, Puppetry, Singing, Dancing, Comedy… All on one stage. All done as a team of friends that have seen the world together and share a love of the Arts. Imagine witnessing the creativity of an artist creating a
masterpiece before your eyes in mere moments. Combined with captivating vocals, intricate choreography and exciting music, Artrageous takes you on a visual journey and a high energy ride of inspiration, creativity, and engagement. Our troupe of artist, musicians, singers and dancers pay tribute to a variety of art forms, icons and musical genres throughout the evening. The result ~ A uniquely entertaining, Masterpiece show culminating in a gallery of fabulous finished paintings. A signature of the Artrageous Troupe, from the very beginning of their long history, is interaction and engagement… so be prepared to be a part of the show. Each show is as unique as each audience and we can’t do it without you!

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
