YAM’s ArtWalk featuring the new exhibitions Yellowstone Art Museum’s ArtWalk will once again begin with an early bird starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 4. Admission to the museum is free during ArtWalk from 4–9 p.m. combined with Jam at the YAM featuring live music by Shane de Leon. View our current exhibitions including two new exhibitions, Earth to Earth: Sediment to Sentiment, and Modernist Intersections: The Tia Collection. Don’t miss this incredible immersive exhibition Archaea: Rosane Volchan O’Conor’s work inspired by the Yellowstone National Park’s micro-biome, which will be closing on August 6th. The Art Collectors’ Corner will feature the work of Barbara Garrett, Steve Haraden, Neil Jussila, Steve Kuennen, Nick Lamb, Jim Poulson, Marc Vischer, Jason and Wendy Jam, and Carol Welch as well as other selected work. Artwork in the Art Collectors’ Corner is available for purchase. A cash bar and light hors d’oeuvres are provided during ArtWalk. First drink is free for new member sign-ups. The YAM also has free parking.

Exhibitions currently on view: Boundless Visions: Selections from the Permanent Collection Exhibition is ongoing Boundless Visions features changing selections from the YAM's permanent collections, including art from the late nineteenth century to the present. This long-term exhibition is the only exhibition in Montana where you can learn the story of art in this region from its beginnings to the present day. Art in Action: Marking Time On view through August 6 NW Projects Gallery Make your own mark at the YAM as we continue with the second in a series of participatory exhibitions, Art in Action, designed to activate and demonstrate museum visitors’ curiosity and creativity. Visitors will leave their marks on the walls of the YAM’s Northwest Projects Gallery, signifying their presence in the world of imagination. Participants may choose to visit over and over in order to interact with the marks left behind by others. Archaea: Rosane Volchan O’Conor On view through August 6 Charles M. Bair Family Gallery Rosane Volchan O’Conor’s unique installation is inspired by the Yellowstone’s history and micro-biome. Using “archaea”— microscopic organisms that survive in extreme environments— as a focal point, the artist’s immersive installation is suggestive of these forms crawling off the walls, hanging crystalized in space, and mutating into clusters across the floor. Using a variety of conventional and unconventional materials, O’Conor has transformed the YAM’s gallery into a miniature universe.

Earth to Earth: Sediment to Sentiment On view through October 15 Murdock Gallery The museum’s continuing relationship with some of the country’s most discerning collectors has led to an exhibition that includes work by one of the grand masters of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, German artist Anselm Kiefer. Three of his most poignant and notable works are joined by selections from the museum’s permanent collection. Modernist Intersections: The Tia Collection July 27 – October 15 Montana Gallery Opening reception Thursday, July 27 This exhibition was drawn from a private collection in Santa Fe, and reveals the multiple intersections between various 20th-century artworks. The connections formed are sometimes obvious, often surprising, and in some cases completely serendipitous in their connection with topical political concerns of the 21st century. The exhibition includes works by regionally, nationally, and internationally known artists such as Bill Schenck, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol, among many others. South Park Line Alive After 5 is an outdoor concert series that takes place over the course of 13 consecutive Thursdays from the beginning of June until the end of August. Hosted at a different venue every week, it combines live music, adult beverages, fresh food, and favorite downtown locations such as restaurants, breweries, cultural venues, and South Park. Jim Gaffigan is a Grammy-nominated comedian, New York Times bestselling author, top touring performer, and multi-platinum-selling father of five. He recently wrapped the first season of his semi-fictitious television show, The Jim Gaffigan Show, which TV Land picked up for a second season and premieres this summer. The series, lauded by The Los Angeles Times as “Fun and Funny,” and People Magazine as “One of Summer TV’s bright spots,” was developed by Peter Tolan along with Gaffigan and his wife, Jeannie, who both also serve as executive producers and showrunners. The Claudettes emerged from their off-the-road winter break with a stark, elegant new recording on Yellow Dog Records. Pull Closer to Me: The Claudettes, Live in the Piano Room, the first released document of the band’s new lineup (pianist/founder Johnny Iguana, singer Berit Ulseth, drummer Matt Torre and bassist/ singer Zach Verdoorn), arrived as an online-exclusive EP in February. The band spent the spring posting a blitz of live-performance videos, beginning with seven filmed in Iguana’s piano room. This “unplugged” session—captured in single live takes using just one vocal mic and one room mic—produced such stirring results that Johnny and Yellow Dog Records agreed to release the audio as an EP. The band then posted a series of videos called “Live from Norman’s Cellar,” filmed at a basement party populated by friends, fans and noted Chicago drag queens, capturing the Claudettes at their fullon electric best. Things We Need to Know about Painting Join the workshop “Things We Need to Know about Painting” with Denney NeVille at the Carbon County Arts Guild, Saturday, August 19 in Red Lodge. This one-day workshop with NeVille is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or advanced painter, this one-day workshop with Wyoming artist Denney NeVille will be a terrific painting experience. The morning will start with a presentation, followed by plenty of time for individual painting, and will end with an informative review. Participants are asked to bring oil or acrylic paint, brushes, odorless thinner (if using oil paint), three panels (8 by 10), pencils, and a sketchbook. In addition, bring one or two samples of art work no larger than 12 by 16 inches. The instructor encourages each student to bring up to six questions about his or her own work or about painting in general. It is preferred that students have a little familiarity in the selected medium. Students ages sixteen years old and up are welcome to participate. The cost to attend the workshop is $75 and registration is requested. Space is limited, so sign up now.

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. ZooMontana highlights burgers, brews and bands in popular event Headliner to be Steve Earle & the Dukes Back by popular demand, Zoofari will take place Friday, August 18th at 5 p.m. with music starting at 6 p.m. The popular event will once again be presented by the Montana Chapter of Safari Club International. Art with “Grit” at the Yellowstone Art Museum Though one often thinks of Montana’s “Big Sky,” the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Montana, presents an exhibition that is grounded in monumental notions about the land in a special exhibition titled Earth to Earth: Sediment to Sentiment. The museum’s continuing relationship with some of the country’s most discerning collectors has led to an exhibition that includes work by one of the grand masters of the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries, German artist Anselm Kiefer. Included in the exhibition, which runs through October 15, 2017, are three of his most poignant and notable works. They are joined by selections from the museum’s permanent collection, bridging two continents and driving home universal and timeless artistic concerns. The exhibited works have “grit.” Some are literally made of the Earth’s sediments. It can be easy to overlook the sublime nature of materials and gestures that artists use to express ideas. In this exhibition, visitors will find emotional qualities expressed in the marks, materials, and scale of the artworks. In these selections emotion is signified through expression, rather than pure representation. Some selections contain literal subject matter; others are more metaphorical or idyllic representations of our relationship to “place”—our position on and in relation to our terrestrial home. The monumental works by German artist Anselm Kiefer, courtesy of an anonymous lender, derive from the artist’s interest in myth, allegory, folklore, and historical events. Rather than directly depicting humanity’s capacity for destruction, he creates visual metaphors that are literally imbued with natural elements. Kiefer creates awareness that the Earth and humanity will not be consumed by greed or power struggles—each will outlast today’s foibles. Yet, he suggests that, without restraint, our actions may return us and all we have accomplished back to our elemental origins: the Earth. Ashes to ashes… A giant among artists of the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries, Kiefer’s influence continues to be widely felt. The Yellowstone Art Museum has combined his work with related art from its permanent collection. Each selected object has something in common with Kiefer’s vision and choice of materials. A human presence is felt in each work, but it is only evident through the artist’s marks—the human figure is ever absent. The exhibition also includes works by Rudy Autio, Deborah Butterfield, Barbara Cooper, Dennis Voss, and Peter Voulkos. This thought-provoking exhibition is sure to spark the imaginations of people of all ages. The museum’s Senior Curator Bob Durden stated, “It is a rare opportunity when one can see the magnitude of three Anselm Kiefers in one place at one time, let alone exhibited here in the rural

West. Kiefer’s allegories are as rich as the materials that sustain them, and we are pleased to exhibit this work in a context with selections from our own permanent collection.” In addition to this special exhibition, museum visitors can glean a broad range of artistic expression that is exemplified in Yellowstone Art Museum’s exhibition Boundless Visions—an ongoing and rotating exhibition of works from its own collection. Three other temporary exhibitions and additional special loans will truly spark the visitor’s curiosity while informing them of the breadth of artistic practice from the nineteenth- through the twenty-first centuries. Custer Battlefield Museum Garryowen (Exit 514, I-90) Custer Battlefield Museum, Exit 514, I-90, is located at one of the most historic sites in Montana and a “must see” for those interested in the Battle of Little Bighorn and the history of the American West, Garryowen, Montana. Adopted in 1867, “Garryowen,” the old Irish tune, is the permanent regimental marching song of the U.S. 7th Cavalry. A historic site, Garryowen, the only town within the Battlefield, is located at I-90 Exit 514 just south of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and Custer National Cemetery. The town is just one hour’s drive from either Billings, Mont. or Sheridan, Wyo. at Exit 514, I-90. The Battle of the Little Bighorn began on the quiet riverbanks of the Little Bighorn when 7th Cavalry troops attacked Sitting Bull’s camp in the first military action of the West’s most famous battle. Major Marcus Reno’s troops attacked Sitting Bull’s camp on the afternoon of June 25, 1876 at Garryowen, Exit 514. Visible from the town of Garryowen are all of the famous locations associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn, including the site where Custer was last seen alive, Major Reno’s hilltop defence site, Weir Point, Last Stand Hill, Medicine Tail Coulee, the Crow’s nest, and Wolf Mountains. The Tomb of the United States Unknown Soldier is the site of one of the first 7th Cavalry casualties. The granite above-ground crypt was dedicated during the Burial of the Hatchet ceremony in 1926 at Garryowen, during the 50th commemoration of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. White Bull, a Sioux, and General Godfrey performed the ceremony with 50,000 in attendance. This town is now privately owned and operated. The Custer Battlefield Museum houses extensive new exhibits including hundreds of Custer Battlefield artifacts from the Battle of

the Little Bighorn and the Plains Indian War period. The institution also boasts a very rare Lewis and Clark book exhibit, which features an original document signed by Captain William Clark. Once inside the museum, patrons can view a remarkable documentary, Contested Ground, which was nominated for a Sundance Film Award in 2016. Produced and narrated by Steve Adelson, a leading oral historian on the Battle, this spectacular film gives an in-depth and powerful explanation of the events leading up to and culminating at what would become known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn or more famously remembered as Custer's Last Stand. This is the largest collection on display of important Indian War period artifacts and manuscripts related to Custer, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and the 7th Cavalry, as well as an acclaimed collection of over 100 important historic photographs by the frontier photographer D.F. Barry. These artifacts and manuscripts are on permanent display in the Museum gallery. A main feature of the Museum’s collection is a display of artifacts specifically related to Sitting Bull, including his death mask, pipe bag, war club, and the contract he signed with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. The contract is the only known document bearing Sitting Bull’s attested signature, witnessed by two Federal Indian Agents. More museum highlights include a lock of Custer’s hair, Captain Tom W Custer’s Kerr revolver, Little Wolf’s battleworn eagle feather war bonnet, weapons, cavalry spurs, war shirts, and a Remington Army revolver dropped on the Reno retreat route- still fully loaded! A significant collection of battle-vintage beaded clothing on exhibit adds to bronzes, paintings, and other memorabilia to create an educational tour through the American frontier.

Hardin Area

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history.

Museum and Visitor Center

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Legends of the Little Bighorn live in Hardin Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. General Custer meets his demise here every year. Hardin, a cattle man from Wyoming who leased tracts of land on the Crow Reservation to range his cattle. Local industry now includes farming and ranching, surface coal mining, fishing and recreational opportunities. You’ll see sugar beets, corn, wheat, and barley in the fields. The raising of beef cattle, sheep, hogs, and quarter horses is part of the livestock economic picture. Just east of Hardin, where the Little Bighorn River joins the Bighorn, is the island site where the Far West sternwheeler boat anchored on June 27, 1876, to evacuate the wounded from the Reno and Benteen battles. It was the Far West that carried survivors with the story of Custer’s defeat to the rest of the world.

Nations, be aware that each has its own unique regulations and law enforcement agencies. The National Park Service maintains jurisdiction at Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Visitors may want to enjoy fishing the Big Horn, Little Big Horn, and Tongue Rivers which wind through this region. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports including boating, water skiing and more. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, at Pryor, contains much history of the Crow Indians. Among the primary attractions within Big Horn County is the Little Bighorn Battlefield, site of the defeat of Lt. Northern-Cheyenne, Busby, Lame Deer and Ashland Loop Busby

Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop.

National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days. In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepee-style church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eighty-five percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the large-beaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head. Attractions include The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the well-known Crow chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. The 99th Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 16-21, 2017 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

THE NORTHERN CHEYENNE

Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system, farming, ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

Drive to the top of the world The Beartooth Highway was the brainchild of Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt, a local doctor who wanted to lure tourists to the Red Lodge area that was financially suffering from a waning coal industry. To obtain federal aid, Siegfriedt teamed up with O.H.P. Shelley, founder of Carbon County News, and Congressman Scott Leavitt. Together, the men successfully lobbied for the passage of the Park Approach Act in 1931. The act allocated funds to build roads to national parks. The pass was opened in 1936. The Beartooth Highway begins in the mountain town of Red Lodge and quickly starts climbing steep switchbacks. After winding 20 miles through 50-60 million-yearold mountains, you come to a pullout that provides excellent panoramas of the Beartooth Plateau. From here you can see the Hell Roaring and Silver Run Plateaus to the north. Glacier Lake is also visible, and if you look hard enough, you might even spot a mountain goat or other wildlife. From here, the road keeps ascending and reveals magnificent canyons carved by the Clark’s Fork River. Thirty miles from Red Lodge, you reach the summit of the pass at 10,974 feet. Shortly after, you come upon the only service area along the entire highway at the tiny settlement of Top of the World. The descent provides views of many mountain lakes. Besides breathtaking landscapes, look for wildflowers and

wildlife. Wildflowers grow below treeline in the summers. Indian Paintbrush, monkeyflower, senecio, buttercups, lupine, arrowleaf, balsamroot, beardstongue, and forget-me-nots are among the wildflowers that carpet the country along the Beartooth Highway. Drive with caution and keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mule deer, black bears, grizzly bears, and moose. When you decide to drive the Beartooth Scenic Highway, take your time. There are many excellent recreational opportunities along the way. There are numerous hiking trails off the road, including some that lead to Island Lake and Beartooth Lake. You can take off for a short day hike or a long multi-day trek. The Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail is an excellent 15- to 20-mile hike that goes past the original site of Camp Sawtooth, formerly an exclusive vacation retreat. Cross country skiing is also possible in early June and July. The pass is closed to cars in the winter but is groomed for snowmobiles. Discovering Montana’s Present In Its Past With so many modern day distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes us Americans, let alone citizens of such a great state as Montana. Yet the seeds to our roots are readily available in sights and activities just down the road. Through visits to these parts of our heritage in southern Montana, we can discover many of the essences that make us unique. LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD (near Garryowen,): General Custer and his men met their demise here in the most famous battle site of the 1870s’ Indian Wars. The U.S. National Park Service offers a museum, gift shop, and guided and selfguided tours with the battle’s notable landmarks clearly marked and interpreted. Not the least of which are the headstones of the troopers who fell here. CUSTER BATTLEFIELD TRADING POST & CAFÉ: Across from the Battlefield entrance, this colorful landmark features exceptional gifts - including beadwork and crafts made by local Crow Indian artisans - plus a hearty menu reflective of the Old West. The mostly Crow staff will enrich your dining and shopping experience in this historic-looking log building that’s fashioned after the 1877 Old Fort Custer Hospital. TOWN OF GARRYOWEN - SITTING BULL’S CAMP: (Exit 514, I-90) The oasis on the Little Big Horn River, the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Custer Battlefield Museum, historical trading post, United States post office, and world-famous Bury the Hatchet BBQ. Don’t miss stopping here! It’s one of the historical, award-winning highlights in the state of Montana. NATIVE AMERICANS: The Battlefield is located in the heart of the Crow Tribe reservation, and nearby is the Lame Deer reservation of the Northern Cheyenne. Both tribes sponsor powwows and native activities throughout the year. Especially popular is the Crow Native Days each June which includes the Ultimate Warrior Contest, a triathlon highlighted by bareback horse relay races!. Crow Fair, with up to 1,000 tipi camps, is also hugely popular. Held in August, it features nightly powwows and daily parades through the camp with participants and horses all decked out in their native best. ROSEBUD BATTLEFIELD STATE PARK (Busby,): Often overlooked, this engagement was every bit as important in shaping subsequent events as the Little Bighorn battle a few days later. Here the balance of power between the army and Indians shifted with a dramatic victory by the Sioux and Cheyenne. Learn why

the Cheyenne refer to this event as The Battle Where The Girl Saved Her Brother.

Custer Battlefield Museum & Theater (Exit 514, I-90): Don’t miss visiting the award-winning museum collection, boasting over 100 historical photographs, firearms, Indian artifacts, and much more from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the largest collection in the world on display. Open daily 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Bighorn County Museum (Hardin,): Rich exhibits demonstrate military and civilian history from when this area was settled in the late 1800s. Pompey’s Pillar (East of Billings): A National Historic Landmark visited by Lewis & Clark and remarkable for the many Indian petroglyphs still evident. Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area (Ft. Smith,): Adjacent to the Yellowtail Dam and Afterbay Lake (very popular with trout fishermen). St. Labre Indian Mission (Ashland,): This private Catholic high school embraces a predominantly Crow and Northern Cheyenne student population. Don’t miss the big annual powwow held each May. Plenty Coups State Park (Pryor,): A museum dedicated to the famous Crow leader Chief Plenty Coups sits adjacent to a small park which is ideal for quiet camping and a home-base for day trips throughout the area.
