Jay Owenhouse the Authentic Illusionist presents ‘Family Magic’ Jay’s new show voted “best touring family show in Asia” here Sept. 16 Jay Owenhouse, legendary escape artist and one of the most awarded illusionists in history, returns to Billings on September 16 with his latest show “Family Magic,” a performance of grand illusions. Show times are at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Alberta Bair Theater. He has invented magic effects and designed illusions not only for his show, but, in the spirit of “giving it away to keep it,” for other magicians of world renown. Musing on Nature with Oil and Steel by Dorci Newman-Tremblay and David in Red Lodge The Carbon County Arts Guild is honored to present the exhibition Musing on Nature with Oil and Steel by Dorci Newman-Tremblay and David McMasters in the Depot Gallery, August 2 through 29, 2017. Dorci NewmanTremblay is an oil painter who works in her Red Lodge studio and en plein air. The work for this show includes many new landscape and wildlife paintings. Newman-Tremblay paints with confidence and in an intuitive manner. The painting style is enhanced by her command of composition, color, texture, and dynamic movement. With each painting, Newman-Tremblay connects the viewer to the scene of the story, its place and emotion. The artist is passionate about Western landscapes and the abundance of wildlife Big Sky country has to offer. David McMasters is very well known for his welded steel sculptures. Most of the pieces in this show are freestanding, bold, and unique. Each piece is

enhanced by the color and texture of the steel segments as they form a cohesive whole. The viewer feels a need to walk around these pieces and experience the power of each sculpture. McMaster’s works are widely collected and respected both here and afar for their size and connection to the environment. The Carbon County Arts Guild is honored to also present the exhibition Artography, by Phil Bell in the North Gallery, August 2 through 29, 2017. Phil Bell’s work starts out as a photograph. Using Photoshop, he creates plug-in filters to make visually stunning works of art. Many of Bell’s photographs in this exhibition will show straight traditional photography that captures the beauty of the landscape. His work relies on classic art principles of composition and design with a little creative edge to add impact. Bell has printed all these pieces on canvas using archival pigment inks.

MontanaFair announces multiple Grammy Award® winners Pat Benatar and Melissa Etheridge will co-headline a show at the Rimrock Auto Arena on Friday, August 11th. During the 1980s, Benatar’s Top 10 hits, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong” and “Invincible,” made her one of the most heavily played artists on MTV. She is acknowledged as the leading female rock vocalist of her time, not only winning Grammy® Awards, but also three American Music Awards. Benatar’s longtime musical director, Neil Giraldo, will join her for her MontanaFair appearance. Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Her success continued in 1993 with massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. PARAMORE AT MONTANAFAIR

Paramore is a band that formed in 2003 in a quiet town that is now known as Nashville, Tenn. Still in junior high, music made up 100% of their extracurricular time. Until eventually, they all left for a tour in the middle of a school year and thank heaven music would eventually work out for them. No one understood how a band so un-country could be from this strange little town called Nashville, nor how a bunch of kids so small could play their angst-filled songs so proudly. Much time has passed since those innocent days. Paramore still resides in their beloved home of Nashville, Tenn, which these days looks a lot more like a construction site than a well-kept secret. They spend most their days and nights sitting on the porch together laughing or crying... reminiscing, daydreaming, or trying desperately to just stay present. Comedian Bill Engvall will bring his signs and family friendly comedy to the Pepsi Entertainment Series at MontanaFair on August 13. Bill starred in and executive produced his own self-titled sitcom, The Bill Engvall Show, for TBS, which ran for three seasons. He was one of the stars of the sketch comedy show, Blue Collar Comedy TV, on the WB network. Alongside Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White, Bill Engvall was part of the enormously successful Blue Collar Comedy Tour concert films, which have sold more than 9 million units and are some of the most watched movies and specials in Comedy Central history. The soundtrack for Blue Collar Comedy Tour, One For The Road, (Warner Bros./Jack Records) was also nominated for a Grammy Award. Open call for artists’ submissions The Yellowstone Art Museum announces an open call for submissions from Montana artists for consideration to be included in the exhibition Montana Triennial 2018. The Montana Triennial was first organized and presented as a juried exhibition by the Missoula Art Museum in 2009 with subsequent exhibitions in 2012 and 2015. These exhibitions have served to demonstrate the diverse and excellent array of artistic practice in the nation’s fourth largest state. The Yellowstone Art Museum, at the invitation of the Missoula Art Museum, has agreed to organize and present the fourth Triennial at the YAM, involving Nicole Herden, Curator of Art at the Boise Art Museum, as an independent juror who will select works from artists’ submissions for inclusion in the exhibition. Given her tenure at the BAM and her position in the region, Ms. Herden is uniquely qualified to serve as the exhibition juror. Noting the growth of artists’ and visitors’ interest in and responses to past Triennials, the YAM’s presentation will

occur in its largest gallery and adjacent corridors July 26 – October 14, 2018, providing an optimal experience for a broad spectrum of Montana’s rich cultural activity to be viewed. The range of visual expression will run the gamut from traditional oil paintings to purely conceptuallybased artworks, in keeping with the YAM’s commitment to exhibiting quality regional art of any sort. All Montana visual artists eighteen and older are invited to submit an application to this juried exhibition. Artists may submit up to four images for consideration. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Ultimate Paintball

This year the Heritage Building will be transformed into a gritty battlefield. Your skill and cunning will be tested as you enter the realm of Ultimate Paintball at MontanaFair, provided by Diamond Paintball of Billings. There are courses for all ages and even an opportunity for a little target practice. You can choose from the inflatable zone with unique objects protecting you from the paintball projectiles. Or try the Urban Adventure where you work through a make shift urban landscape hunting your prey. When you play Ultimate Paintball, you will receive a semi auto gun, mask and 100 paintballs to start your journey in the courses. The great part about this game is the non staining paint. Entertainment at MT Fair Coyote Wild

Coyote Wild performs an eclectic mix of both classic and current rock and country. With their blend of talent and creativity, this band has a professional sound without losing the energy that audiences would expect from a performing rock band. Built around strong vocals and great harmonies, their set list is a diverse mix of classic rock and contemporary country, meaning there’s something for everyone. The show is high-energy, fast-paced, but most of all, FUN and is sure to inspire dancing, singing along, and simply having a good time. Lady Houdini®, the name given to Kristen Johnson by an Inside Edition producer at CBS Studios in New York has definitely stuck. She has broken the immortal Harry Houdini’s record for the most Water Torture Cell escapes ever performed, which historians and magic aficionados worldwide estimate to be just over 1,000. She broke Houdini’s record in 2012 as she successfully performed her 1,001st public escape during the Georgia State Fair at the Atlanta Speedway. She is currently over 1,700 attempts and counting. There have been three occasions where Lady Houdini failed to escape the Water Torture Cell and had to be rescued. Two of the occasions resulted in her blacking out from hypoxic seizures. With over a decade of experience performing on traditional “echasse” peg stilts, teaching workshops, and fabricating wooden stilts for performers, ACC continues to inspire with their audacious designs and inimitable presence. Born and raised in rural Montana, the three brothers, John, Joe,and Marty have found a desire to revive all the aspects of Traditional Western Music from its heyday. They evoke silver screen cowboys like Roy Rogers, Western harmony groups like Sons of the Pioneers, and country music icons like Marty Robbins. The High Country Cowboys, members of the Western Music Association, have released several albums. In 2015 and ‘16, their lead singer Marty, was awarded as the WMA’s Yodeler of the Year. In 2016, they were nominated for the WMA Crescendo Award, and their album “Songs of the High Country Cowboys” was among the Top 5 nominees for the 2016 WMA Western Album of the Year. In 2016 they were also recognized by the AWA, (Academy of Western Artists), being nominated for Western Group of the Year, Western Song of the Year, and Western Album of the Year! Since their start at the local Pollard Hotel in Redlodge, in 2014, they have performed at numerous fundraisers, fairs, outdoor concerts and theaters. In April of 2016, they debuted at the Alberta Bair Theater in Billings Mont., before a crowd of 500. Later that year they played for a crowd of 2,000 at St. Johns Summer Concert Series, also in Billings. Returning to MontanaFair and taking the Timesquare Furniture Community Stage for one day only, Monday, August 14, is Marty Davis. Marty Davis brings to the stage the color, excitement, and harmony of the stars of the Silver Screen and the singing cowboy era. Marty will be joined this year by Loretta Brank MacKeever. Lorette played in Marty’s band for a couple of years in the early 1980s. Since then, she’s played with Deana Carter of Strawberry Wine fame for three years, with Patty Loveless, Sara Evans, and Mindy McCready among others. Loretta has also performed on The Opry, the CMA and ACM Awards shows, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, The Today Show, and Good Morning America. Rodeo at the Fair Yellowstone River Roundup PRCA Rodeo August 17, 18, and 19 The 2016 Yellowstone River Roundup at MontanaFair had the largest purse in the rodeo’s history and more than 600 competitors. The YRR is expected to eclipse that in 2017. The fair is scheduled to have over 500 cowboys and a total purse of over $110,000 making it one of the top 40 rodeos in the United States. Final numbers aren’t available until the entries and draw is complete, but the YRR remains one of the top pro rodeo stops in Montana. The Yellowstone River Roundup in the Northern Hotel Grandstands is sponsored by Shipton’s Big R. There are three night performances August 17, 18, and 19. Each performance begins at 7 p.m. For real rodeo fans, slack is always a big draw. Slack occurs when there are too many participants to give every performer a time slot in the night time performances. Slack will also be in the Northern Hotel Grandstands each day.

The rodeo has grown consistently since it moved to the Grandstands and its affiliation with PRCA in 2011. Sankey Rodeo Company of Joliet will provide the stock and assist in producing the fair rodeo again in 2017. The top cowboys in the world will take their place in this year’s rodeo. Custer Battlefield Museum, Exit 514, I-90, is located at one of the most historic sites in Montana and a “must see” for those interested in the Battle of Little Bighorn and the history of the American West, Garryowen, Montana. Adopted in 1867, “Garryowen,” the old Irish tune, is the permanent regimental marching song of the U.S. 7th Cavalry. A historic site, Garryowen, the only town within the Battlefield, is located at I-90 Exit 514 just south of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and Custer National Cemetery. The town is just one hour’s drive from either Billings, Mont. or Sheridan, Wyo. at Exit 514, I-90. The Battle of the Little Bighorn began on the quiet riverbanks of the Little Bighorn when 7th Cavalry troops attacked Sitting Bull’s camp in the first military action of the West’s most famous battle. Major Marcus Reno’s troops attacked Sitting Bull’s camp on the afternoon of June 25, 1876 at Garryowen, Exit 514. Visible from the town of Garryowen are all of the famous locations associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn, including the site where Custer was last seen alive, Major Reno’s hilltop defence site, Weir Point, Last Stand Hill, Medicine Tail Coulee, the Crow’s nest, and Wolf Mountains. The Tomb of the United States Unknown Soldier is the site of one of the first 7th Cavalry casualties. The granite above-ground crypt was dedicated during the Burial of the Hatchet ceremony in 1926 at Garryowen, during the 50th commemoration of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. White Bull, a Sioux, and General Godfrey performed the ceremony with 50,000 in attendance. This town is now privately owned and operated. The Custer Battlefield Museum houses extensive new exhibits including hundreds of Custer Battlefield artifacts from the Battle of

the Little Bighorn and the Plains Indian War period. The institution also boasts a very rare Lewis and Clark book exhibit, which features an original document signed by Captain William Clark. Once inside the museum, patrons can view a remarkable documentary, Contested Ground, which was nominated for a Sundance Film Award in 2016. Produced and narrated by Steve Adelson, a leading oral historian on the Battle, this spectacular film gives an in-depth and powerful explanation of the events leading up to and culminating at what would become known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn or more famously remembered as Custer's Last Stand. This is the largest collection on display of important Indian War period artifacts and manuscripts related to Custer, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and the 7th Cavalry, as well as an acclaimed collection of over 100 important historic photographs by the frontier photographer D.F. Barry. These artifacts and manuscripts are on permanent display in the Museum gallery. A main feature of the Museum’s collection is a display of artifacts specifically related to Sitting Bull, including his death mask, pipe bag, war club, and the contract he signed with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. The contract is the only known document bearing Sitting Bull’s attested signature, witnessed by two Federal Indian Agents. More museum highlights include a lock of Custer’s hair, Captain Tom W Custer’s Kerr revolver, Little Wolf’s battleworn eagle feather war bonnet, weapons, cavalry spurs, war shirts, and a Remington Army revolver dropped on the Reno retreat route- still fully loaded! A significant collection of battle-vintage beaded clothing on exhibit adds to bronzes, paintings, and other memorabilia to create an educational tour through the American frontier.

Hardin Area

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history.

Museum and Visitor Center

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Hardin, a cattle man from Wyoming who leased tracts of land on the Crow Reservation to range his cattle. Local industry now includes farming and ranching, surface coal mining, fishing and recreational opportunities. You’ll see sugar beets, corn, wheat, and barley in the fields. The raising of beef cattle, sheep, hogs, and quarter horses is part of the livestock economic picture. Just east of Hardin, where the Little Bighorn River joins the Bighorn, is the island site where the Far West sternwheeler boat anchored on June 27, 1876, to evacuate the wounded from the Reno and Benteen battles. It was the Far West that carried survivors with the story of Custer’s defeat to the rest of the world.

Big Horn County

Big Horn County is a land made up of varying jurisdictions. As you drive across the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Nations, be aware that each has its own unique regulations and law enforcement agencies. The National Park Service maintains jurisdiction at Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Visitors may want to enjoy fishing the Big Horn, Little Big Horn, and Tongue Rivers which wind through this region. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports including boating, water skiing and more. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, at Pryor, contains much history of the Crow Indians. Among the primary attractions within Big Horn County is the Little Bighorn Battlefield, site of the defeat of Lt. Colonel George Custer and the 7th Calvary by a combined force of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors in 1876. Annual re-enactments of the battle occur each June. In August, Crow Agency, capital of the Crow Nation, hosts Crow Fair when the landscape is transformed by the addition of over 1,000 pitched teepees and thousands of people gathering for traditional dances, drumming and other events. Big Horn County is rich in culture and time-honored traditions.

Northern-Cheyenne, Busby, Lame Deer and Ashland Loop Busby

Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days. In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepee-style church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eighty-five percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the large-beaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head. Attractions include The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the well-known Crow chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. The 99th Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 16-21, 2017 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

THE NORTHERN CHEYENNE

Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system, farming, ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. The Pow Wow and Rodeo is held the 4th of July weekend.

Drive to the top of the world The Beartooth Highway was the brainchild of Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt, a local doctor who wanted to lure tourists to the Red Lodge area that was financially suffering from a waning coal industry. To obtain federal aid, Siegfriedt teamed up with O.H.P. Shelley, founder of Carbon County News, and Congressman Scott Leavitt. Together, the men successfully lobbied for the passage of the Park Approach Act in 1931. The act allocated funds to build roads to national parks. The pass was opened in 1936. The Beartooth Highway begins in the mountain town of Red Lodge and quickly starts climbing steep switchbacks. After winding 20 miles through 50-60 million-yearold mountains, you come to a pullout that provides excellent panoramas of the Beartooth Plateau. From here you can see the Hell Roaring and Silver Run Plateaus to the north. Glacier Lake is also visible, and if you look hard enough, you might even spot a mountain goat or other wildlife. From here, the road keeps ascending and reveals magnificent canyons carved by the Clark’s Fork River. Thirty miles from Red Lodge, you reach the summit of the pass at 10,974 feet. Shortly after, you come upon the only service area along the entire highway at the tiny settlement of Top of the World. The descent provides views of many mountain lakes. Besides breathtaking landscapes, look for wildflowers and

wildlife. Wildflowers grow below treeline in the summers. Indian Paintbrush, monkeyflower, senecio, buttercups, lupine, arrowleaf, balsamroot, beardstongue, and forget-me-nots are among the wildflowers that carpet the country along the Beartooth Highway. Drive with caution and keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mule deer, black bears, grizzly bears, and moose. When you decide to drive the Beartooth Scenic Highway, take your time. There are many excellent recreational opportunities along the way. There are numerous hiking trails off the road, including some that lead to Island Lake and Beartooth Lake. You can take off for a short day hike or a long multi-day trek. The Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail is an excellent 15- to 20-mile hike that goes past the original site of Camp Sawtooth, formerly an exclusive vacation retreat. Cross country skiing is also possible in early June and July. The pass is closed to cars in the winter but is groomed for snowmobiles. Discovering Montana’s present in its past With so many modern day distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes us Americans, let alone citizens of such a great state as Montana. Yet the seeds to our roots are readily available in sights and activities just down the road. Through visits to these parts of our heritage in southern Montana, we can discover many of the essences that make us unique. LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD (near Garryowen): General Custer and his men met their demise here in the most famous battle site of the 1870s’ Indian Wars. The U.S. National Park Service offers a museum, gift shop, and guided and selfguided tours with the battle’s notable landmarks clearly marked and interpreted. Not the least of which are the headstones of the troopers who fell here. CUSTER BATTLEFIELD TRADING POST & CAFÉ: Across from the Battlefield entrance, this colorful landmark features exceptional gifts - including beadwork and crafts made by local Crow Indian artisans - plus a hearty menu reflective of the Old West. The mostly Crow staff will enrich your dining and shopping experience in this historic-looking log building that’s fashioned after the 1877 Old Fort Custer Hospital. TOWN OF GARRYOWEN - SITTING BULL’S CAMP: (Exit 514, I-90) The oasis on the Little Big Horn River, the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Custer Battlefield Museum, historical trading post, United States post office, and world-famous Bury the Hatchet BBQ. Don’t miss stopping here! It’s one of the historical, award-winning highlights in the state of Montana. NATIVE AMERICANS: The Battlefield is located in the heart of the Crow Tribe reservation, and nearby is the Lame Deer reservation of the Northern Cheyenne. Both tribes sponsor powwows and native activities throughout the year. Especially popular is the Crow Native Days each June which includes the Ultimate Warrior Contest, a triathlon highlighted by bareback horse relay races!. Crow Fair, with up to 1,000 tipi camps, is also hugely popular. Held in August, it features nightly powwows and daily parades through the camp with participants and horses all decked out in their native best. ROSEBUD BATTLEFIELD STATE PARK (Busby): Often overlooked, this engagement was every bit as important in shaping subsequent events as the Little Bighorn battle a few days later. Here the balance of power between the army and Indians shifted with a dramatic victory by the Sioux and Cheyenne. Learn why

Custer Battlefield Museum & Theater (Exit 514, I-90): Don’t miss visiting the award-winning museum collection, boasting over 100 historical photographs, firearms, Indian artifacts, and much more from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the largest collection in the world on display. Open daily 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Bighorn County Museum (Hardin): Rich exhibits demonstrate military and civilian history from when this area was settled in the late 1800s. Pompey’s Pillar (East of Billings): A National Historic Landmark visited by Lewis & Clark and remarkable for the many Indian petroglyphs still evident. Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area (Ft. Smith,): Adjacent to the Yellowtail Dam and Afterbay Lake (very popular with trout fishermen). St. Labre Indian Mission (Ashland): This private Catholic high school embraces a predominantly Crow and Northern Cheyenne student population. Don’t miss the big annual powwow held each May. Plenty Coups State Park (Pryor): A museum dedicated to the famous Crow leader Chief Plenty Coups sits adjacent to a small park which is ideal for quiet camping and a home-base for day trips throughout the area.
