Wonderlandscape: A Cultural History of Yellowstone National Park
12 p.m. – 1 p.m. • FREE By John Clayton Yellowstone is America’s premier national park. Today is often a byword for conservation, natural beauty, and a way for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors. But it was not always this way. Wonderlandscape presents a new perspective on Yellowstone, the emotions various natural wonders and attractions evoke, and how this explains the park’s relationship to America as a whole.
Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 13
Whether it is artists or naturalists, entrepreneurs or pop-culture icons, each character in the story of Yellowstone ends up reflecting and redefining the park for the values of its era. For example, when Ernest Thompson Seton wanted to observe bears in 1897, his adventures highlighted the way the park transformed from a set of geological oddities to a wildlife sanctuary, reflecting a nation was concerned about disappearing populations of bison and other species. Subsequent eras added Rooseveltian masculinity, democratic patriotism, ecosystem science, and artistic inspiration as core Yellowstone hallmarks. As the National Park system enters its second century, Wonderlandscape allows us to reflect on the values and heritage that Yellowstone alone has come to represent―how it will shape the America’s relationship with her land for generations to come. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.
American Indian Collection
A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.
Landmarks Gallery
This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique
two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Custer Battlefield Museum Garryowen (Exit 514, I-90)
Rated one of America’s Top Military Museums by Fox News
Custer Battlefield Museum, Exit 514, I-90, is located at one of the most historic sites in Montana and a “must see” for those interested in the Battle of Little Bighorn and the history of the American West, Garryowen, Montana. Adopted in 1867, “Garryowen,” the old Irish tune, is the permanent regimental marching song of the U.S. 7th Cavalry. A historic site, Garryowen, the only town within the Battlefield, is located at I-90 Exit 514 just south of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and Custer National Cemetery. The town is just one hour’s drive from either Billings, Mont. or Sheridan, Wyo. at Exit 514, I-90. The Battle of the Little Bighorn began on the quiet riverbanks of the Little Bighorn when 7th Cavalry troops attacked Sitting Bull’s camp in the first military action of the West’s most famous battle. Major Marcus Reno’s troops attacked Sitting Bull’s camp on the afternoon of June 25, 1876 at Garryowen, Exit 514. Visible from the town of Garryowen are all of the famous locations associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn, including the site where Custer was last seen alive, Major Reno’s hilltop defence site, Weir Point, Last Stand Hill, Medicine Tail Coulee, the Crow’s nest, and Wolf Mountains. The Tomb of the United States Unknown Soldier is the site of one of the first 7th Cavalry casualties. The granite above-ground crypt was dedicated during the Burial of the Hatchet ceremony in 1926 at Garryowen, during the 50th commemoration of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. White Bull, a Sioux, and General Godfrey performed the ceremony with 50,000 in attendance. This town is now privately owned and operated. The Custer Battlefield Museum houses extensive new exhibits including hundreds of Custer Battlefield artifacts from the Battle of
the Little Bighorn and the Plains Indian War period. The institution also boasts a very rare Lewis and Clark book exhibit, which features an original document signed by Captain William Clark. Once inside the museum, patrons can view a remarkable documentary, Contested Ground, which was nominated for a Sundance Film Award in 2016. Produced and narrated by Steve Adelson, a leading oral historian on the Battle, this spectacular film gives an in-depth and powerful explanation of the events leading up to and culminating at what would become known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn or more famously remembered as Custer's Last Stand. This is the largest collection on display of important Indian War period artifacts and manuscripts related to Custer, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and the 7th Cavalry, as well as an acclaimed collection of over 100 important historic photographs by the frontier photographer D.F. Barry. These artifacts and manuscripts are on permanent display in the Museum gallery. A main feature of the Museum’s collection is a display of artifacts specifically related to Sitting Bull, including his death mask, pipe bag, war club, and the contract he signed with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. The contract is the only known document bearing Sitting Bull’s attested signature, witnessed by two Federal Indian Agents. More museum highlights include a lock of Custer’s hair, Captain Tom W Custer’s Kerr revolver, Little Wolf’s battleworn eagle feather war bonnet, weapons, cavalry spurs, war shirts, and a Remington Army revolver dropped on the Reno retreat route- still fully loaded! A significant collection of battle-vintage beaded clothing on exhibit adds to bronzes, paintings, and other memorabilia to create an educational tour through the American frontier.

Farstad Oil Ranch Rodeo Finals at the NILE The 2017 Farstad Oil Ranch Rodeo Finals at the NILE is Saturday, October 14 at 7 p.m. in the Rimrock Auto Arena. The ranch rodeo has been a part of the NILE since 2007, making this year its tenth anniversary. 2017 is also the 50th anniversary of the NILE stock show and rodeo. Teams are competing for thousands of dollars in prize money, as well as buckles from Montana Silversmiths. The winning team also earns a spot at the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association (WSRRA) Finals in Winnemuca, Nevada. Contestants are also vying for custom made spurs for riding the Top Horse, and a saddle made by Connolly Saddlery for the Top Hand. Twelve teams qualified over the summer to compete at the NILE. It’s the best versus the best. The toughest competition in the Montana and surrounding states region. The sanctioned rodeos were the Neal Hermanson Memorial Ranch Rodeo in Sidney, Montana; the Custer Ranch Rodeo in Custer, Montana; the Bozeman Roundup Ranch Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana; the Eastern Wyoming Ranch Rodeo in Lusk, Wyoming; the Big Sky Roundup Ranch Rodeo in Great Falls, Montana; the Phillips County Saddle Club Ranch Rodeo in Dodson, Montana; the Wyoming State Fair in Douglas, Wyoming; the Ingomar Ranch Rodeo in Ingomar, Montana.
Grand entry begins at 7 p.m. followed by bronc riding. The rules say “flamboyance and creativeness are encouraged,” which means the riders whoop and holler, throw their hats, and who knows what else! Last year a bronc rider’s wife was expecting a baby, so the team tossed pink colored flour in the air as a baby gender reveal. After the bronc riding is the team trailering. Three yearlings have to be sorted out from a herd and loaded up into a trailer. Fastest time wins. Watch excellent horsemanship and teamwork for a speedy task completion. Cattle can be unpredictable so it’s always a wild guess as to what will happen. Following is the team branding. Two teams are in the arena at the same time. A contestant is horse back and must rope a calf, bring it to the “fire” (bucket of flour) for the other teammates to flank and brand with flour. The team that can rope and brand two calves the fastest wins. The team doctoring event is next, again the fastest time wins. The team must head and heel two steers, lay them on their sides and then mark their heads with a neon chalk marker. Cowboys and cowgirls show off skills they’ve honed on the ranch. The final event is the Wild Cow Milking. Appropriately named, this event is wild. The team must rope a cow, milk her, and run the bottle to the judge. The judge will tip the bottle and must at least get a few drops out to be a qualified run. Ranch rodeos are a different kind of rodeo and provide unique entertainment. Purchase tickets at the Metra Park Box Office call (406) 256-2400 or metrapark.com After the awards ceremony is the Dance in the Dirt. A brand new event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the NILE and the tenth anniversary of the Ranch Rodeo. Kyle Shobe and the Walk ‘Em Boys will play a lively concert right on the arena floor. Concert entrance is included with a ranch rodeo ticket purchase. Keep the entertainment going after the cattle and horses clear out, dance the night away and make memories to last a lifetime. Find the teams on page 22.

Youngest, Wildest Pony Riders at the 2017 NILE Rodeo PRCA Rodeos October 19-21 at 7 p.m. Only the toughest kid cowboys and cowgirls in the West compete in Wild Pony Racing during the NILE PRCA rodeos October 19-21, at MetraPark’s Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings, MT! Teams of three kids must hold on, get on, and stay on a wild pony for a maximum of two seconds. Which may sound easy, but it’s not! The team that does it the fastest wins! The anchor holds the end of the lead rope, the mugger holds the pony, and the rider has to get on and stay on the pony. Five teams compete during each rodeo on both Thursday, October 19 and Friday, October 20--the top two teams from each night return for the final round Saturday night, October 21. It’s fast and it’s furious, but it has even the most seasoned rodeo goers on the edges of their seats! There is no other entertainment quite like the Wild Pony Rides! Three kids 12 and under and weighing less than 150 pounds combined form a team. Teams must be turned into office with all three team members’ forms completed and signed before teams are considered entered. Teams must also pay in full at time of entry to be considered officially entered and entries close Friday, October 13th. Teams will be drawn but can indicate at entry time whether they have a preference of Thursday or Friday night. Teams will be notified of their draw Tuesday, October 17th. Parents must sign liability release and pay $60 entry fee per team. Ponies provided by Lazy 3S Rodeo Co. For more information go to thenile.org

Pictograph Cave State Park
Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and 45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of
the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Discovering Montana’s present in its past With so many modern day distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes us Americans, let alone citizens of such a great state as Montana. Yet the seeds to our roots are readily available in sights and activities just down the road. Through visits to these parts of our heritage in southern Montana, we can discover many of the essences that make us unique. LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD (near Garryowen): General Custer and his men met their demise here in the most famous battle site of the 1870s’ Indian Wars. The U.S. National Park Service offers a museum, gift shop, and guided and selfguided tours with the battle’s notable landmarks clearly marked and interpreted. Not the least of which are the headstones of the troopers who fell here. CUSTER BATTLEFIELD TRADING POST & CAFÉ: Across from the Battlefield entrance, this colorful landmark features exceptional gifts - including beadwork and crafts made by local Crow Indian artisans - plus a hearty menu reflective of the Old West. The mostly Crow staff will enrich your dining and shopping experience in this historic-looking log building that’s fashioned after the 1877 Old Fort Custer Hospital. TOWN OF GARRYOWEN - SITTING BULL’S CAMP: (Exit 514, I-90) The oasis on the Little Big Horn River, the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Custer Battlefield Museum, historical trading post, United States post office, and world-famous Bury the Hatchet BBQ. Don’t miss stopping here! It’s one of the historical, award-winning highlights in the state of Montana. NATIVE AMERICANS: The Battlefield is located in the heart of the Crow Tribe Reservation, and nearby is Lame Deer on the reservation of the Northern Cheyenne. Both tribes sponsor powwows and native activities throughout the year. Especially popular is the Crow Native Days each June which includes the Ultimate Warrior Contest, a triathlon highlighted by bareback horse relay races!. Crow Fair, with up to 1,000 tipi camps, is also hugely popular. Held in August, it features nightly powwows and daily parades through the camp with participants and horses all decked out in their native best. ROSEBUD BATTLEFIELD STATE PARK (Busby): Often overlooked, this engagement was every bit as important in shaping subsequent events as the Little Bighorn battle a few days later. Here the balance of power between the army and Indians shifted with a dramatic victory by the Sioux and Cheyenne. Learn why
the Cheyenne refer to this event as The Battle Where The Girl Saved Her Brother.
Other Sites Of Note –
Custer Battlefield Museum & Theater (Exit 514, I-90): Don’t miss visiting the award-winning museum collection, boasting over 100 historical photographs, firearms, Indian artifacts, and much more from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the largest collection in the world on display. Open daily 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Bighorn County Museum (Hardin): Rich exhibits demonstrate military and civilian history from when this area was settled in the late 1800s. Pompey’s Pillar (East of Billings): A National Historic Landmark visited by Lewis & Clark and remarkable for the many Indian petroglyphs still evident. Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area (Ft. Smith,): Adjacent to the Yellowtail Dam and Afterbay Lake (very popular with trout fishermen). St. Labre Indian Mission (Ashland): This private Catholic high school embraces a predominantly Crow and Northern Cheyenne student population. Don’t miss the big annual powwow held each May. Plenty Coups State Park (Pryor): A museum dedicated to the famous Crow leader Chief Plenty Coups sits adjacent to a small park which is ideal for quiet camping and a home-base for day trips throughout the area.
