YAM's Masquerade Party

The Yellowstone Art Museum is proud to host the 3rd Annual Masquerade Party on Saturday, October 28th beginning at 7 p.m. once again featuring Billings AlternaCirque performances and aerial wine pouring, and DJ Benefit. The evening features a costume contest with prizes and free souvenir photos for each guest, tarot card readers and other mystics, hors d'oeuvres, local draft beer, dancing, drinks, and more. Get your tickets early and join the party. Ages 21 and up, doors open at 7 p.m. Presale for YAM members begins Thursday, August 24th at 5:30 p.m. during the opening of our new exhibition My Hero! Contemporary Art and Superhero Action. Open ticket sales begin September 1st. Early bird tickets start at $25 each, so get your tickets before the price increases or they sell out. Tickets are available at the Yellowstone Art Museum or online at http://www.artmuseum.org/special-events/masquerade-party. Learn about the YAM’s haunted past as the Yellowstone County Jail in a one-hour guided tour on Friday, October 20th or 27th starting at 7 p.m. These tours are free for members and High 5 Pass cardholders or with paid museum admission. 2018 Traffic Signal Box Program: Call for Artists Dec 1, 2017: Is the deadline for next season's Traffic Signal Box Program in Downtown Billings. Artists may apply for the 2018 TSB Program by printing the application from the Downtown Billings Alliance website: www.downtownbillings. com. Artists may submit portfolio work of any 2-dimensional medium and the selected artists will design new art for this project. Their artwork will be digitally transferred to a special vinyl overlay which will be professionally wrapped around traffic signal boxes in downtown Billings. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel organized by the DBA Public Art Committee and the artist selections will be announced in January. Artists will receive a stipend for their work.

Dr. Kevin Ayesh to Perform Piano Concert at Rocky Mountain College

Virtuoso concert pianist Dr. Kevin Ayesh will perform the music of Mozart, Chopin and Gershwin at Rocky Mountain College on October 27 at 7p.m., in Losekamp Hall’s Taylor Auditorium. The concert event is free and open to the public. Ayesh has performed concerts and presented master classes throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Germany, and Hong Kong. Ayesh has been the head of the Music Department at Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock, North Carolina since 1992. As a North Carolina Visiting Artist for four years, he appeared before thousands across that state, performing as many as 50 recitals in a season. In addition, Ayesh is the recipient of many prizes, including the Naftzger Piano Award, Baltimore Music Club Award, and Winner of both the JCC Baltimore Piano Competition and the Maryland State Music Teachers' Elizabeth R. Davis Memorial Piano Competition. He has been a finalist in several national and international competitions, was awarded Second Prize at the Wideman International Piano Competition, and won both Third Prize and Composer's Prize at the New Orleans International Piano Competition. He has appeared as concerto soloist with a number of orchestras. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Ayesh holds degrees from the University of Texas and the University of Maryland. He studied under Elinor Aiken, William Race, and Nelita True.

6th Annual YRRC Student Research Forum October 26 The 6th Annual Yellowstone River Research Center Student Research Forum will be held at Rocky Mountain College on October 26, 2017, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Losekamp Hall’s Taylor Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. “Having the opportunity to conduct research as an undergraduate is rare and I'm extremely grateful that I get to participate,” said Andrhea Massey, who will present her research project at the forum. “The support from the YRRC and the connections I've made have inspired me to go to graduate school and continue my research. When you're in the field, as you gather data and accumulate experience, you begin to find more questions with each answer.” YRRC/RMC students will present findings from their summer 2017 research projects. Student presentations will be 10 minutes each, followed by a 5-minute question-and-answer session. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Forum Presenters / Research Projects Gabriel Aponte, who is studying environmental management and policy, as well as environmental science, will present his project, “Analysis of Spiny Softshell Turtle (Apalone spinifera) Population Structures in Five River Systems in Eastern Montana.” His faculty advisor for this research is Kayhan Ostovar. Kelsey Crona, who is studying biology, as well as environmental science, will present her project, “Pretreatment Monitoring for North Hebgen Lake Whitebark Pine Restoration.” Her faculty advisors for this research are Megan Poulette and Luke Ward. Jade Gjerde, who is studying environmental science, as well as environmental studies, will present her project, “Lichen Assessment on the Beartooth Plateau, Wyoming.” Her faculty advisor for this research is Megan Poulette.

Andrhea Massey, who is studying environmental management & policy, as well as environmental science, will present her project, “Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) Populations and Movements on Tributaries of the Yellowstone River.” Her faculty advisor for this research is Kayhan Ostovar. Monika Rock, who is studying environmental management & policy will present her project, “A Comparison of Two Remotely Sensed Models of Blister-Rust and Pine Beetle Infestation Disturbances in Whitebark Pine Stands in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.” Her faculty advisor for this research is Luke Ward. Cameron Woods, who is studying environmental management & policy will present, “Stakeholder Perspectives on Approaches for Improving Public Access to Yellowstone River Islands.” His faculty advisor for this research is Luke Ward. The YRRC is a multidisciplinary research institute comprised of geologists, ecologists, wildlife biologists, geographers and social scientists at Rocky Mountain College. The center is positioned in an area that is a microcosm of the northern Rocky Mountain region, where some of the nation’s most pristine environments coincide with ongoing processes of resource extraction, agriculture, industrial activity and increasing human settlement. A unique feature of the YRRC is the strong emphasis placed on involving undergraduate students in research projects to better understand these dynamics. The Environmental Program at RMC offers majors in environmental science, environmental management & policy, and environmental studies. 16th Annual Downtown Trick-or-Treat The Downtown Billings Alliance is hosting the 16th annual Downtown Trick-or-Treat on Tuesday, October 31st, from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. This free community event offers trick-ortreating for children at participating businesses as a safe and family-friendly Halloween celebration. The DBA office at 2815 2nd Ave. N. will provide maps of participating locations and trick-or-treat bags for children. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way. American Indian Collection A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. Tenor Trio GENTRI performs at ABT As part of Alberta Bair Theater’s Orser Outstanding Performances Series, tenor trio GENTRI performs on Friday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m. A local string quartet led by David Heinzen, principal cellist of the Billings Symphony, will join GENTRI on stage. Established in 2014, GENTRI: The Gentlemen Trio is comprised of three highly trained tenors: Brad Robins, Casey Elliott and Bradley Quinn Lever. Pioneering a signature sound best described as “Cinematic Pop,” the music of GENTRI is transfused with lush, epic orchestrations and rich, dynamic three-part harmonies all composed by the group’s producer Stephen Nelson. GENTRI’s self-titled debut EP was released in 2015. The record spent ten consecutive weeks in the Top 10 on two different Billboard charts, including three weeks at No. 2 on both the Classical and Classical Crossover charts. Pictograph Cave State Park Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and

45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

Discovering Montana’s present in its past With so many modern day distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes us Americans, let alone citizens of such a great state as Montana. Yet the seeds to our roots are readily available in sights and activities just down the road. Through visits to these parts of our heritage in southern Montana, we can discover many of the essences that make us unique. LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD (near Garryowen): General Custer and his men met their demise here in the most famous battle site of the 1870s’ Indian Wars. The U.S. National Park Service offers a museum, gift shop, and guided and selfguided tours with the battle’s notable landmarks clearly marked and interpreted. Not the least of which are the headstones of the troopers who fell here. CUSTER BATTLEFIELD TRADING POST & CAFÉ: Across from the Battlefield entrance, this colorful landmark features exceptional gifts - including beadwork and crafts made by local Crow Indian artisans - plus a hearty menu reflective of the Old West. The mostly Crow staff will enrich your dining and shopping experience in this historic-looking log building that’s fashioned after the 1877 Old Fort Custer Hospital. TOWN OF GARRYOWEN - SITTING BULL’S CAMP: (Exit 514, I-90) The oasis on the Little Big Horn River, the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Custer Battlefield Museum, historical trading post, United States post office, and world-famous Bury the Hatchet BBQ. Don’t miss stopping here! It’s one of the historical, award-winning highlights in the state of Montana. NATIVE AMERICANS: The Battlefield is located in the heart of the Crow Tribe Reservation, and nearby is Lame Deer on the reservation of the Northern Cheyenne. Both tribes sponsor powwows and native activities throughout the year. Especially popular is the Crow Native Days each June which includes the Ultimate Warrior Contest, a triathlon highlighted by bareback horse relay races!. Crow Fair, with up to 1,000 tipi camps, is also hugely popular. Held in August, it features nightly powwows and daily parades through the camp with participants and horses all decked out in their native best. ROSEBUD BATTLEFIELD STATE PARK (Busby): Often overlooked, this engagement was every bit as important in shaping subsequent events as the Little Bighorn battle a few days later. Here the balance of power between the army and Indians shifted with a dramatic victory by the Sioux and Cheyenne. Learn why

the Cheyenne refer to this event as The Battle Where The Girl Saved Her Brother.

Custer Battlefield Museum & Theater (Exit 514, I-90): Don’t miss visiting the award-winning museum collection, boasting over 100 historical photographs, firearms, Indian artifacts, and much more from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the largest collection in the world on display. Open daily 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Bighorn County Museum (Hardin): Rich exhibits demonstrate military and civilian history from when this area was settled in the late 1800s. Pompey’s Pillar (East of Billings): A National Historic Landmark visited by Lewis & Clark and remarkable for the many Indian petroglyphs still evident. Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area (Ft. Smith,): Adjacent to the Yellowtail Dam and Afterbay Lake (very popular with trout fishermen). St. Labre Indian Mission (Ashland): This private Catholic high school embraces a predominantly Crow and Northern Cheyenne student population. Don’t miss the big annual powwow held each May. Plenty Coups State Park (Pryor): A museum dedicated to the famous Crow leader Chief Plenty Coups sits adjacent to a small park which is ideal for quiet camping and a home-base for day trips throughout the area.
