“We’re in a real exciting part of our career right now,” says co-founder Todd Park Mohr. “We’re a viable band with a great audience and we’re able to work at a very high level. It’s a career that’s getting more and more interesting, rather than less, which is remarkable,” he says, chuckling at the unlikelihood of anyone being this cheerfully all-in, this far in. “I mean, 30 years into it, I really feel like: Wow, this is getting fun. I’m learning more about music and about my instrument, and it’s just really engaging in every way. We also dovetail well with the times, I think; I feel like we have something to say.”

Strangeways
7:30 a.m. • $15 Kiss cover band from Billings MT Hogan’s Goat Named after a tale from Scottish folklore, the band initially formed in late 2014. As the story goes, a farmer (Hogan) owned a goat rumored to have an odor said to travel miles away. The goat’s been described as having patchy fur, an eye out of the socket, and flies abound. For the band, this perfectly symbolized their unorthodox style, that which is anything but unnoticeable. Their first show (at SXSW, on the rooftop of The Blind Pig) was part of an all Nashville (non-country) showcase. Soon after, HG returned to Nashville, competed in BMI’s “Road To Bonnaroo” (winning the fan vote) and played many other shows around the Nashville area. In March of 2016, Hogan’s Goat began recording their first LP, “Hogan’s Goat” which is set to release July 18th, 2017. The band looks to tour regionally, nationally, and globally. The show will be at The Pub Station Ballroom. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave. N www.1111presents.com Dec. 2

Fishtail Fishtail is a wonderful little town, nestled in the middle of the Beartooth Mountains, with shops that will keep you busy all day long. Stop for coffee at the rock shop. Grab a sack lunch at one of the oldest general stores in Montana. Shop for unique items or an afternoon of crafts for you and the kids at the Muddy Lamb. Then, grab dinner on your way out at the bar and supper club. Fishtail is 7 miles southwest of Absarokee. Named for the nearby butte, the community of Fishtail was established in 1892 on John Maner’s homestead, when the area was opened to homesteading following the ceding of this part of the Crow Indian Reservation in 1892. Chrome and platinum mining in the nearby Stillwater Complex attracted residents from the 1940s to the present. A post office was established in 1901 providing service to new homesteaders of the Fiddler, Fishtail, and Rock Creek areas. Stressley Tunnell opened a store and a livery barn completed the business section of town. Fishtail is in the foothills of the dramatic Beartooth Mountains. This area offers opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, and a variety of other outdoor activities. Rosebud Isle is a state fishing access site on Fishtail Creek.

Historic Cobblestone School Absarokee’s Cobblestone School celebrates its 99th birthday this year, now serving as an inviting community center. When the Cobblestone Preservation Committee got a lease on the building that was targeted to
be demolished, they put in a new boiler and updated wiring. They replaced boarded-up windows, purchased furniture, and eventually installed new carpets. In recent years, members of the Cobblestone Committee completed a restroom remodel and installed energy-efficient windows recreated in the style of the originals. Annually, about 5,000 visitors use the old schoolhouse for activities such as community theater, a farmers’ market and family reunions.

Absarokee Absarokee is a scenic, small community which is a gateway to fishing, hiking, camping and outdoor exploration along the Stillwater River and the nearby Absarokee-Beartooth Wilderness. Absarokee is 14 miles south of Columbus. The town and the Absaroka Mountains bear an Indian name by which the Crows were originally known. The Crows are of Siouxan origin and were once part of the Hidatsa tribe around the Great Lakes. A corruption of Apsaalooke, the name Absarokee refers to the Crows, or “children of the largebeaked bird.” It is pronounced “Ab-SOR-kee.” For a time, Crow Agency was located about 3 miles south of here, but when the agency moved to a site near Hardin in 1882 and the federal government opened this area to homesteading, Absarokee grew into a thriving supply and service community. The town’s spelling differs from that of the nearby Absaroka Mountain Range supposedly because the poor penmanship of an early settler resulted in the final “a” being mistaken for “ee.” Recreation abounds near Absarokee. The Stillwater River has several fishing access sites along its entire route after it emerges from the Beartooth Wilderness Area. From Absarokee, there are many access routes into the Beartooths with trails that wind high into alpine country that is full of mountain lakes teeming with fish. For an adventurous drive, head for Red Lodge from Absarokee. The mountain scenery is stunning.

Legacy of the railroad welcomes visitors to Laurel When construction began on the Laurel High School Sports Complex in 2009, the school district offered the purple and gold caboose that had been at the football field to the Laurel Chamber of Commerce. Laurel Alive, a committee made up of community business people, had been working on a project to create a Welcome to Laurel sign for the community. Initial efforts to find a location near I-90 were thwarted. Working with Montana Department of Transportation personnel, Laurel Alive co-chairs Dean Rankin and Linda Frickel came up with idea of using a location near the underpass at First Avenue and Railroad Street. At a joint meeting of chamber and Laurel Alive members, Rankin’s and Frickel’s idea to use the caboose for the Welcome to Laurel sign was approved. It took another 16 months to iron out liability insurance issues and to negotiate a lease with Montana Rail Link. Ultimately, the railroad agreed to an affordable lease amount in support of the effort. Laurel Alive members asked for cash and in-kind donations to bring the project to its current state. Rob Schessler of
Schessler Ready-Mix leveled the site and Chuck Krug of Krug and sons provided the needed backfill gravel. P & H Concrete poured the slab and Jack Gabrian at MRL got the caboose moved to its current location on the slab. Dick Fritzler, a Laurel native and former city councilman, painted the caboose and Dylan Robertus and Paul Stutterheim cut, powder-coated and welded the words onto the caboose. Jay Craig, owner of TFR Construction donated landscaping rock and Dennis Greenwalt helped create the terrace in front of the caboose and along the underpass. Fritzler painted the caboose Northern Pacific red. The significance of the red and black theme is that Northern Pacific Railroad was one of Laurel’s founding railroad companies. Although the company is no longer in business, it still holds a place of prominence in Laurel’s history, Laurel Alive member Dirk Frickel said. Dirk Frickel said the project has been a positive activity to show community pride in Laurel to visitors. “That’s what Laurel Alive is about — putting ‘unity’ back in community,” he said.
Historic locations in Billings? There’s an app for that History buffs can go back to the future the next time they want to tour historic downtown Billings. Employing 21st century technology for a better understanding of the past, a free app of a tour of historic downtown Billings has been created through a partnership between the Yellowstone Historic Preservation Board and Western Heritage Center. An app is a software application used on smartphone or other mobile devices such as iPads and iPods. Western Heritage Center Community Historian Kevin Kooistra said the walking tour of downtown Billings needed to be updated and the historic preservation board decided to go with an app. www.walkhistoricbillings.com/ After downloading the app onto a mobile device, a person can launch a map of downtown Billings with teardrop-shaped icons marking older buildings. Touch an icon and up pops the history of the building and description of the architectural style, as well as factoids and quotes from period publications. Kooistra writes in his description of the Montana Power Building at 113 North Broadway, “The Montana Power Company five-story landmark, completed in 1916, was the tallest building on the Billings’ skyline for years. The Billings Gazette commented, in 1916, ‘from the standpoint of electrical illumination [the Montana Power Building is] one of the most striking buildings in the country.’ The building cost a staggering $250,000 and became a centerpiece of North Broadway.” Kooistra also dug up gems from Billings’ brush with celebrity. In the description for the Babcock Theatre, 2808 Second
Avenue North, Kooistra writes, “Political VIPs Theodore Roosevelt, Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan all spoke from the Babcock stage, while Ethel Barrymore and David Warfield and many others performed in theater productions.” Other building biographies show the local impact of national issues. In the description of the Carlin Hotel, 2501 Montana Avenue, Kooistra tells of a prohibition drama worthy of its own episode on HBO. “The Carlin Hotel was the site of a federal sting operation that netted Billings’ Mayor Arthur Trenerry and Mrs. A.M. Leach, the lessee, for violating Prohibition laws. The hotel had a reputation as a place for handling liquor. Trenerry was accused of providing drinks and promising police protection for an illegal bootlegging operation. At their trial, the Mayor claimed he was set up. After 17 hours of deliberation, with the defense making the case that federal officers framed the Mayor to satisfy a personal grudge, the jury found Trenerry and Leach innocent of the charge of conspiring to violate the prohibition law.” According to Kooistra’s research, the metropolis that sprang up at the foot of the rimrocks was a beautiful — and tough — city. “I’m working on adding 12 more downtown Billings properties in the next few months,” said Kooistra. As the project develops, Kooistra said it may expand to include surrounding communities. Kooistra included references that he consulted in his research so app users can find more information about the buildings. Kooistra welcomes comments or additional information. The app project was paid for by a $2,000 state historic preservation grant.

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround the valley. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area—catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Whereever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Discovering Montana’s present in its past With so many modern day distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes us Americans, let alone citizens of such a great state as Montana. Yet the seeds to our roots are readily available in sights and activities just down the road. Through visits to these parts of our heritage in southern Montana, we can discover many of the essences that make us unique. LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD (near Garryowen): General Custer and his men met their demise here in the most famous battle site of the 1870s’ Indian Wars. The U.S. National Park Service offers a museum, gift shop, and guided and selfguided tours with the battle’s notable landmarks clearly marked and interpreted. Not the least of which are the headstones of the troopers who fell here. CUSTER BATTLEFIELD TRADING POST & CAFÉ: Across from the Battlefield entrance, this colorful landmark features exceptional gifts - including beadwork and crafts made by local Crow Indian artisans - plus a hearty menu reflective of the Old West. The mostly Crow staff will enrich your dining and shopping experience in this historic-looking log building that’s fashioned after the 1877 Old Fort Custer Hospital. TOWN OF GARRYOWEN - SITTING BULL’S CAMP: (Exit 514, I-90) The oasis on the Little Big Horn River, the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Custer Battlefield Museum, historical trading post, United States post office, and world-famous Bury the Hatchet BBQ. Don’t miss stopping here! It’s one of the historical, award-winning highlights in the state of Montana. NATIVE AMERICANS: The Battlefield is located in the heart of the Crow Tribe Reservation, and nearby is Lame Deer on the reservation of the Northern Cheyenne. Both tribes sponsor powwows and native activities throughout the year. Especially popular is the Crow Native Days each June which includes the Ultimate Warrior Contest, a triathlon highlighted by bareback horse relay races!. Crow Fair, with up to 1,000 tipi camps, is also hugely popular. Held in August, it features nightly powwows and daily parades through the camp with participants and horses all decked out in their native best. ROSEBUD BATTLEFIELD STATE PARK (Busby): Often overlooked, this engagement was every bit as important in shaping subsequent events as the Little Bighorn battle a few days later. Here the balance of power between the army and Indians shifted with a dramatic victory by the Sioux and Cheyenne. Learn why
the Cheyenne refer to this event as The Battle Where The Girl Saved Her Brother.
Other Sites Of Note:
Custer Battlefield Museum & Theater (Exit 514, I-90): Don’t miss visiting the award-winning museum collection, boasting over 100 historical photographs, firearms, Indian artifacts, and much more from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the largest collection in the world on display. Open daily 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Bighorn County Museum (Hardin): Rich exhibits demonstrate military and civilian history from when this area was settled in the late 1800s. Pompey’s Pillar (East of Billings): A National Historic Landmark visited by Lewis & Clark and remarkable for the many Indian petroglyphs still evident. Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area (Ft. Smith,): Adjacent to the Yellowtail Dam and Afterbay Lake (very popular with trout fishermen). St. Labre Indian Mission (Ashland): This private Catholic high school embraces a predominantly Crow and Northern Cheyenne student population. Don’t miss the big annual powwow held each May. Plenty Coups State Park (Pryor): A museum dedicated to the famous Crow leader Chief Plenty Coups sits adjacent to a small park which is ideal for quiet camping and a home-base for day trips throughout the area.
