Reception & Artist Talk at MSUB Thursday, February 8, 5 - 8 p.m. Artist Talk Begins at 6:30 p.m. in LI148 (next to gallery) *Catered, Free, and Open to the Public*
Randi O'Brien’s exhibition Orangery remains on view through February 8 at the Northcutt Steele Gallery on the 1st floor of the Liberal Arts Building on MSUB campus. On the evening of Thursday, February 8 a public reception for the artist will be held at the gallery beginning at 5 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. in LI148 (the lecture hall next to the gallery) O'Brien will offer an artist talk. Orangery offers a collection of functional pottery, figurative ceramic sculptures, and a clay-animation digital video exploring O'Brien's ongoing interest in fables. According to the artist: "The narrative intention of a fable is the moral fiber of my work. I cherish the cycles of yearning and atonement which reveal a character’s personal discovery. It is within this cycle that an audience can see a character’s ability to navigate her internal struggles. Orangery is about cultivating essentia; gardening, harvesting, and protecting the essence of oneself." Randi O’Brien is a ceramic artist, historian, writer, and educator from the Rocky Mountains. O’Brien’s work is a reflection of her upbringing in Colorado, and current life in Montana where she is Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Montana State University Billings. She received an MFA in Ceramics and MA in Art History from The University of Montana. For more information about the artist, visit: http:// www.randiobrien.com/. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the 1st floor of the Liberal Arts Building on MSUB campus and is sponsored in part by funds from ASMSUB (Associated Students of Montana State University Billings). The gallery is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., and by appointment. The gallery is closed on university holidays. Parking on MSUB campus is free after 5 p.m.

Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 5
Tippet Rise present its 3rd concert season July 6 through September 8, 2018
Tippet Rise Art Center, located against the backdrop of Montana’s Beartooth Mountains, has announced the dates and highlights for its third concert season, July 6 through September 8. The art center, which celebrates the union of land, art, architecture, and music, will present eight weeks of concerts featuring an impressive list of performers, some making their debuts at Tippet Rise and others returning as audience favorites. Complete details will be announced in early 2018.
Returning Artists
Stellar performers returning to Tippet Rise include pianists Anne-Marie McDermott, Pedja Muzijevic, and Jeffrey Kahane, who astounded us in 2017 with his deeply moving improvisation on “America the Beautiful,” as well as violinist Caroline Goulding. We also welcome back two wonderful string quartets: the Escher String Quartet and the Dover Quartet. Returning performers also include Russian concert pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, whose Scarlatti recording made it into Forbes's Top 10 Best Classical Recordings of 2016. In addition, also returning for her third season at Tippet Rise, is Taiwan native Jenny Chen, a concert pianist with numerous international music competition awards. Chen said she is anxious to return to Montana: “First time I came here with honor, the second time a delight, and the third time will be precious. Tippet Rise Festival made me unforgettable memories, and I am so excited to get back to their embrace!”
Commissioning New Work
Tippet Rise is committed to commissioning work by important contemporary composers. In this spirit, Season Three will include a new work by Aaron Jay Kernis—the second to be composed through a threeyear commissioning program—performed by the Borromeo String Quartet. Kernis’s first commission for Tippet Rise, “First CLUB Date,” a work for piano and cello, was given its premiere in August 2017. In 2020, Kernis will premiere the third commissioned work, a piece for small chamber ensemble and voice.
Debut Artists
Among the artists making their Tippet Rise debuts are pianist Ingrid Fliter performing the complete Chopin nocturnes. St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, drawn from New York City-based Orchestra of St. Luke’s, will perform works by Brahms and Robert and Clara Schumann. The Calidore String Quartet will be joined by Tara Helen O’Connor to highlight gems of the chamber music repertoire that feature flute, and will also partner with violinists Daniel Phillips and Aaron Boyd and pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, in Bach concertos for piano and 7 strings.
It’s a Family Affair
Tippet Rise always encourages families to visit the art center and next season that extends to musicians. Season Three includes cellist David Finckel and his wife, pianist Wu Han, both world-class performers as well the Artistic Directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Music@Menlo, and other enterprises that have earned them a reputation as “chamber music’s power couple” (The Wall Street Journal). Also returning to Tippet Rise next season is Jeffery Kahane, concert pianist and immediate past conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, performing with his son, Gabriel Kahane, a dynamic young singer-songwriter whose music blends classical and rock.
Performance Venues
Performances will take place both indoors and out. The 150-seat Olivier Music Barn, inspired by the intimate performance spaces where Haydn’s and Mozart’s works were performed, is Tippet Rise’s primary concert venue. Preconcert lectures will take place at the Tiara, a 100-seat outdoor acoustic shell. Weather permitting, select concerts will also take place at the open-air Domo, a 98 -foot-long, 16-foot-tall, acoustically rich sculptural structure designed by Ensamble Studio. Two family concerts, designed to enlighten, entertain, and educate Tippet Rise’s younger audiences, will also be presented.
Winter at Tippet Rise Art Center
While the art center will be closed to the public over the winter, concert footage from several performances from the 2016 and 2017 concert seasons can be viewed online. New videos include Yevgeny Sudbin playing Medtner’s “Sonata Tragica” in C minor, Op. 39, No. 5, from “Forgotten Melodies”; Jenny Chen playing Chopin’s Étude Op. 10, No. 3; and Jeffrey Kahane’s deeply moving improvisation on Samuel A. Ward’s “America the Beautiful.” Tippet Rise is home to state-of-the-art recording facilities and is hosting
several artists this fall and winter for special studio sessions. Violinist Caroline Goulding recently recorded Ysaye’s Sonata no. 5, Bartok Solo Sonata and Telemann Sonata in A major and pianist Alessandro Deljavan will be recording at Tippet Rise later this month. Both albums will be released in 2018.As a testament to the art center’s growing reputation as a cultural oasis, Tippet Rise recently received a 2017 Leading Culture Destination Award from the UK’s LCD Magazine and travel channel. The awards ceremony was held in London at the Trafalgar Saint James Hotel on Friday, September 29. Other winners include the British Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum. Tippet Rise will reopen to the public on Friday, June 29, one week before the start of the summer music series, for tours of its monumental outdoor sculptures on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with prior registration. Visitors can explore the ranch and its sculptures via nine miles of hiking and biking trails, or by electric shuttle bus.
About Tippet Rise Art Center
Tippet Rise Art Center is located in Fishtail, Montana against the backdrop of the Beartooth Mountains, roughly midway between Billings and Bozeman and just north of Yellowstone National Park. Set on a 10,260-working sheep and cattle ranch, Tippet Rise hosts classical music performances and exhibits monumental outdoor sculptures. Tippet Rise is anchored in the belief that art, music, architecture, and nature are inextricably linked in the human experience, each making the others more powerful. The art center features musical performance spaces indoors and out, with programs that seek to create memorable experiences for performers and audience members alike. The 2017 summer concert season featured new and returning artists, established soloists, and rising stars, who presented works ranging in date from the early 18th century through today. Tippet Rise also collaborated in 2017 with the Architecture & Design Film Festival to screen a specially curated schedule of films. Tippet Rise Art Center has a growing collection of large-scale sculptures and other works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects. Many are site-specific compositions, aiming to transcend the boundaries of art, nature, and architecture. Artworks set within the landscape include several sculptural structures by the innovative Ensamble Studio, including the 25-foot-tall Beartooth Portal, composed of two vertical rocklike forms that stand approximately 25 feet apart at ground level and lean together at the top; the similarly designed 26-foot-tall Inverted Portal, and the 98 -foot-long, 16-foot-tall Domo. Tippet Rise is also home to two monumental works by the internationally renowned sculptor Mark di Suvero: Beethoven’s Quartet, a massive stainless-steel work, and Proverb which stands 60 feet tall, two site-specific works including Satellite # 5: Pioneer, by Stephen Talasnik and Daydreams by Patrick Dougherty; and two works by Alexander Calder on loan from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden: Two Discs (1965) and Stainless Stealer (1966). Two paintings by Isabelle Johnson, an original owner of part of the land on which Tippet Rise Art Center is situated, and Montana’s first Modernist painter, have been acquired by Tippet Rise and hang in the Olivier Music Barn. As an institution founded to serve its neighbors in Montana as much as visiting musicians, artists, and audiences, Tippet Rise develops and supports year-round education programs in schools at the K-12 level, local colleges and universities, and other organizations.
Getting to Tippet Rise Art Center
Located in Stillwater County, Tippet Rise is approximately one hour southwest of Billings, two hours southeast of Bozeman, and two-and-a-half hours north of Yellowstone National Park. It is served by two major airports – Billings Logan International Airport and Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport.
Access and Tickets
Tippet Rise is open to visitors from June 29 to mid-September on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4pm with prior registration. Tickets will be available in early 2018. For the latest information on ticketing, please sign up for the Tippet Rise e-newsletter. For more information about Tippet Rise, please visit www.tippetrise.org

literally thousands of productions this extraordinary play has received over the years. Something deep and profound resonates through the events that unfold in this American masterpiece brilliantly penned by Ernest Thompson. Beguilingly simple, this tale of a single family and how they pull apart and then find each other has been touching audiences for decades and generations. We at Montana Rep feel it is time to reintroduce this quintessentially American play to our audiences. This play has endured because it deals with a family in crisis in a humane, poetic, and often very funny way. It continues to resonate because we all have mothers and fathers, we all cope with aging, and we have all experienced being lost and hopefully found. It is this dynamic, this finding of family and the love therein, that keeps On Golden Pond forever relevant. Don’t miss this stunning event at the Alberta Bair Theater! Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way. American Indian Collection A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story
The international tour of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story makes a stop at Alberta Bair Theater on Friday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this theatrical production are $50 and $35. A phenomenally multi-talented cast performs more than two hours of music with more than 20 of Buddy Holly’s greatest hits, including the timeless classics “That’ll Be The Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy” and “Rave On.” With the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace” and Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” completing a stellar musical line-up, Buddy is a not to be missed evening of feel-good family entertainment. Loved by critics and audiences alike, Buddy tells the enduring tale of the musical icon’s meteoric rise to fame and his final legendary performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, before his tragic and untimely death at the age of 22. In 18 short months, the Texas-born boy revolutionized the face of contemporary music influencing everyone from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen. “When we opened the show we never imagined Buddy’s music and story would still be rocking stages and entertaining audiences around the world week-in week-out over 25 years later.” Says Buddy’s widow, Maria Elena Holly. “I believe this is testament to a great show – the
first of its kind – and to the enduring appeal of Buddy Holly and what he represents; a youthful energy, huge talent, and creativity, combined with a determination to make a lasting impression in this world.” Seen by more than 22 million music fans since it opened in London’s West End in 1989, Buddy continues to have audiences from 8 to 80 rockin’ in the aisles across the globe and inspired a generation of multi-million selling juke-box musicals including Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, Million Dollar Quartet, and We Will Rock You. Winter ArtWalk 2018, the end of ArtWalk Downtown Billings’ 23rd Season, will be a celebration of cool art, cold weather, merriment, music and more. Winter ArtWalk takes place on Friday, February 2, 2018 from 5 - 9 p.m. Each participating Winter ArtWalk location has a separate gallery page on ArtWalk’s mobile-friendly website, www.artwalkbillings.com. There, visitors can find images from current and past ArtWalk events, gallery notes, directions and contact information. ArtWalk is free, family friendly and weather resistant. On-street metered parking is free; rates vary at city parking garages. ArtWalk maps can be downloaded from www.artwalkbillings.com and www.billings365.com. Printed maps can be found at all ArtWalk locations and in the Billings Visitor’s Guide. Images and gallery notes are posted at Facebook.com/billingsartwalk. ArtWalk began in the early 1990s with a handful of artists and Montana Avenue galleries who agreed to be open five nights each year. Since then, the endeavor has expanded across downtown and grown many times over. In late 2017, ArtWalk’s Season Membership voted to expand the number of events to six, up from the traditional five. “We hope the new schedule is easier to remember,” said ArtWalk Director, Virginia Bryan. “Plus the new schedule adds another event during the summer.” ArtWalk’s 24th Season begins on April 6. Additional events are on June 1, August 4, October 5, and December 7 and February 1, 2019. All dates are first Fridays of the months noted. “Come From Far” Winter Tour Featuring New Kingston w/ special guests Yellowstoned and The Late Ones New Kingston is a Progressive Reggae group whose members combine their Jamaican heritage with the urban sounds of their New York home, New Kingston are a family band consisting of brothers Tahir, Courtney Jr., and Stephen along with their father, Courtney Panton, Sr. A first-generation JamaicanAmerican, Courtney the elder was active in New York's reggae scene before turning his sons on to the music of their island heritage. Born out of jam sessions in the family's Brooklyn basement, the brothers began their career playing Bob Marley and Earth, Wind & Fire covers at parties and gatherings around the neighborhood. By 2010, they'd become focused on their own writing, which fused R&B, hip-hop, and dancehall with traditional reggae sounds. With each brother writing and offering vocals, Courtney Sr. filled in on bass. Following their self-released debut, In the Streets, New Kingston went on a European tour with rising reggae star Collie Buddz, playing a number of prominent festivals. Their sophomore LP, 2013's Kingston University, earned them a deal with New York label Easy Star Records, which issued their third LP, Kingston City, in early 2015. Boasting an increased production value and guest spots by the Tribal Seeds, The Wailing Souls, Sister Carol, and Sugar Minott, Kingston City raised the band's visibility considerably, topping Billboard's reggae chart upon its release. An EP, Kingston Fyah, arrived in the summer of 2016.

The Greater Billings Area
Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround the valley. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area—catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Whereever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Discovering Montana’s present in its past With so many modern day distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes us Americans, let alone citizens of such a great state as Montana. Yet the seeds to our roots are readily available in sights and activities just down the road. Through visits to these parts of our heritage in southern Montana, we can discover many of the essences that make us unique. LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD (near Garryowen): General Custer and his men met their demise here in the most famous battle site of the 1870s’ Indian Wars. The U.S. National Park Service offers a museum, gift shop, and guided and selfguided tours with the battle’s notable landmarks clearly marked and interpreted. Not the least of which are the headstones of the troopers who fell here. CUSTER BATTLEFIELD TRADING POST & CAFÉ: Across from the Battlefield entrance, this colorful landmark features exceptional gifts - including beadwork and crafts made by local Crow Indian artisans - plus a hearty menu reflective of the Old West. The mostly Crow staff will enrich your dining and shopping experience in this historic-looking log building that’s fashioned after the 1877 Old Fort Custer Hospital. TOWN OF GARRYOWEN - SITTING BULL’S CAMP: (Exit 514, I-90) The oasis on the Little Big Horn River, the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Custer Battlefield Museum, historical trading post, United States post office, and world-famous Bury the Hatchet BBQ. Don’t miss stopping here! It’s one of the historical, award-winning highlights in the state of Montana. NATIVE AMERICANS: The Battlefield is located in the heart of the Crow Tribe Reservation, and nearby is Lame Deer on the reservation of the Northern Cheyenne. Both tribes sponsor powwows and native activities throughout the year. Especially popular is the Crow Native Days each June which includes the Ultimate Warrior Contest, a triathlon highlighted by bareback horse relay races!. Crow Fair, with up to 1,000 tipi camps, is also hugely popular. Held in August, it features nightly powwows and daily parades through the camp with participants and horses all decked out in their native best. ROSEBUD BATTLEFIELD STATE PARK (Busby): Often overlooked, this engagement was every bit as important in shaping subsequent events as the Little Bighorn battle a few days later. Here the balance of power between the army and Indians shifted with a dramatic victory by the Sioux and Cheyenne. Learn why
the Cheyenne refer to this event as The Battle Where The Girl Saved Her Brother.
