Montana Women’s Run opens registration Montana Women’s Run has opened registration for the 37th annual run in downtown Billings. The 2-mile and 5-mile runs will be held on May 12, 2017. This Montana Women’s Run expects more than 9,000 athletes to participate in the yearly event. The 5 mile race will start first at 8 am, followed by the 2 mile race at 9 am. In addition to the Women’s Run, the Kids’ Run for kids aged 10 and under will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at the Rocky Mountain College. The goal of this event is to encourage active lifestyles for children. Every race time is rewarded and every runner wins! Specially designed t-shirts will be given to all participants. The Kick-Off Dinner and Women’s Health Expo will be May 11 at a new location, the First Interstate Bank Operations Center, located at 1800 6th Ave. N., across from North Park. This evening is for runners, walkers and volunteers to enjoy the Health Expo, a delicious pasta dinner, presentation of the Pat Jaffray Inspiration Award and an motivational presentation by the guest speaker. The Health Expo features interactive exhibits and presentations from which women can learn more about fitness, nutrition and better health. Getting Started Clinics will be held on Monday evenings beginning on March 19 to help get in shape with instructor-led exercise and stretching techniques. These clinics are free and will take place at the Rocky Mountain College outdoor track and the Lockwood School track, beginning at 5:30 p.m. each Monday before the run. The 2017 Montana Women’s Run proudly donated $92,000 to women’s health and fitness programs in the Billings community. Over the years, the Montana Women’s Run has donated over $1,159,000 to local organizations in our community. Recipients of the funds are the YWCA, Billings Clinic’s Women’s Wellness program, the YMCA, and Women’s Cross-Country and Track scholarship programs at MSU-B and Rocky Mountain College. The headquarters for Montana Women’s Run is located at 213 N. 29th St. in the heart of downtown Billings. The headquarters will be open May 9-11, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For announcements, updates and discussion about the many Women’s Run events, please visit the Montana Women’s Run Facebook page or the Montana Women’s Run website. This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. Hamlet by Aquila Theatre

at Alberta Bair Theater 7:30 p.m. Hamlet is arguably Shakespeare’s greatest play. Written in 1602, it is one of the most complete portrayals of the human psyche that exists in Western Literature. A compelling tale of familial discord, personal ambition, love and revenge, Hamlet has enthralled audiences for 400 years. Mortality and madness are two of the most pronounced themes of Shakespeare’s epic and the characters; Hamlet, Ophelia, Gertrude, and Claudius inhabit a rich landscape replete with deceit, mistrust, and schemes. Four centuries after its premiere, Hamlet continues as one of the classics of the world stage. The YAM celebrates the grit of rural living As life begins to bloom in Montana after the spring equinox, the Yellowstone Art Museum celebrates the beauty of nature and rural life in three new exhibitions that open with a public reception 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2018. Nature’s Cadence: Paintings by Clyde Aspevig will be complemented by Emil Carlsen’s Quiet Harmonies. These two exhibitions inform each other, respectively offering a twenty-first and nineteenth- to twentieth-century view of natural scenes that range from the sublime to the extraordinary. For a lifetime, Clyde Aspevig has been listening to the cadence of nature … its crashes and whispers, its grand symphonies and its single sonorous notes. In every season, he is literally and physically “in” his subject matter. Subtle, intimate views draw him as surely as do heart-stopping, dramatic vistas. Born and raised in Montana, Aspevig is a world traveler; however, he returns to his wellspring of inspiration—the northern Plains and northern Rockies—with the sureness of the migrating Sandhill cranes. Through the filters of his intense curiosity and his wide-ranging familiarity with the history of art, Aspevig has approached the craft of painting with both intellect and emotion. His work brings the art historical past into the present while simultaneously representing his unique hand, so clearly distinguishable from the work of other contemporary landscapists. The YAM’s exhibition will include 37 paintings on loan from the artist, museum and private collections from across the nation. The exhibition is the fifth installment in the museum’s Montana Masters series, which focuses on the work of mature artists who have not only created a profound body of work, but who have influenced artistic practice in the region. Clyde Aspevig expresses a reverence for the craft of painting through his own mastery of it. His respect is also evident in the influences he acknowledges from such painter-teachers as the Danish-American painter Emil Carlsen (1848-1932). Nature’s Cadence has been coordinated in tandem with an exhibition of Carlsen’s work to permit the viewer to study how the work of an artist from the past can be reshaped and made visible once again in the present. Emil Carlsen is counted among a diverse group of American PostImpressionist and realist painters who flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Carlsen, a master colorist, possessed a sophisticated sense of design and an ability to find subtle beauty in the everyday subject. As a young man, Carlsen emigrated from Denmark, and he brought

European academic training to his new life in the U.S. Carlsen’s livelihood depended much on teaching, with benefits to American art history that he may never have set out to attain. This exhibition emphasizes the critical importance of artists such as Carlsen, who influenced generations of artists not only through their own work but through their effective teaching philosophies and methods. Carlsen is known within the history of American art for his masterful still-life paintings, but this exhibition will be the first since the 1970s to focus on Carlsen’s equally compelling landscapes and seascapes. The exhibition’s curator and former executive director of the YAM Robyn G. Peterson notes, “All of these exquisite works reveal a technical facility and assured composition that deeply impress the viewer. Carlsen is remembered for his still-lifes, yet the landscapes and seascapes—a majority of them executed during the prime of his artistic life—are a true joy to experience.” Emil Carlsen’s Quiet Harmonies includes 40 paintings and works on paper from 20 museums and private collectors in the U.S. and Canada. The third exhibition in the spring cycle is Rough and Tumble, Smoke and Rope, a videographic and photographic look at contemporary ranch life in eastern Montana. The exhibition includes 31 works by photographers Mark Chapman and Harry Sandler and a video montage produced by Mark Chapman. The content of the video and photographs documents the daily activities on Cabin Creek Ranch between 2014 and 2017. The exhibition, which was inspired and driven by photographer Harry Sandler and ranch owner Rob Andy, avoids a sentimental view of agricultural life, offering instead a sincere portrayal of the activities that borrow from traditional ranching philosophies while instilling twenty-first-century technology and medicine into the mix. It conveys the individual commitment from ranch hands and seasonal labor from neighboring ranchers that are required to raise healthy stock while building a sense of community between neighbors, a sense of pride, discipline, and accomplishment in all who live this life. All three exhibitions are family friendly and are certain to inspire visitors and pique the imaginations of anyone who loves painting and has an appreciation for or interest in rural lifestyles. Nature’s Cadence: Paintings by Clyde Aspevig and Emil Carlsen’s Quiet Harmonies remain on view until July 8th. Rough and Tumble, Smoke and Rope remains on view until August 5th. He is currently the Creative/Music Director at Faith Chapel, where he can be found singing and playing the piano on weekends. He has released four independent albums under the name C.R. Smith as to not be confused with other Chris Smiths. Two of Chris’ albums are piano instrumentals and two are vocal albums. In 2012, he won a HGTV theme song contest for their hit show International House Hunters. Chris has performed with the Billings Studio Theatre, Battle Creek Symphony and the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale. He is also the lead singer of the Midlife Chryslers. Kristy Montgomery has been singing all her life, but perfected her style while attending Oral Roberts University in Tulsa Oklahoma. She lived in Billings for 8 years.
