Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

50th Annual MSU Billings Powwow

Anniversary event takes place in Alterowitz Gymnasium on April 6-7. Public welcome to attend. Montana State University Billings will host the 50th Annual MSUB Powwow, which will commence with the Grand Entry at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 6 and continues through Saturday, April 7, starting at noon and wrapping up with a Winners Ceremony near midnight. “We are the oldest college powwow in the state of Montana” shared Director of the Native American Achievement Center, Reno Charette. “Our MSUB Powwow is one of the largest student-led American Indian events in the Northwest.” Past powwows have drawn almost 2,800 attendees from Native American nations in Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Canada, as well as all of Montana’s tribal nations. Powwows are held nationwide with the purpose of sharing and renewing the culture and rich heritage of American Indians. The event shines a spotlight on native culture and is open to the public, free of charge. For the 50th celebration, MSUB’s Yellowjacket (Buzz) logo, was restyled. “This anniversary event launches the new ‘Native Buzz’ official logo,” shared Charette. “Everyone is very excited about this logo. We will continue to use it for years to come.” MSUB alumnus Kasey Nicholson, with Aaniiih tribe of Fort Belknap, will emcee the event. Multiple events are planned in conjunction with the 50th Annual MSUB Powwow. Some of these include: • The Grand Entry will include 50 flags representing the U.S.A., Montana, every military branch, all of Montana’s Tribes, 20 international countries, and the five MSUB colleges. The Crow and Northern Cheyenne color guard will present the flags. • The agenda for this year is a social powwow. There will be owl, push, boot and hat, team, chicken, clown, and Veterans’ dances; all of which are competition style dances with cash prizes awarded to the top winners. Typically, about 500 dancers enter the competition. • Friday evening at 7 p.m. in Petro Theatre there will be a concert by Scatter Their Own with opening act, Arterial Drive. Admission to the concert is $10. • Marita Growing Thunder will display her handmade dresses that she created to bring attention to the plight of missing and murdered indigenous women. Her dress-making endeavor began while she was a senior in high school and in one year she made close to 200 dresses. MSUB alumna, Bonny Beth Luhman, is curating the dress exhibit. • An alumni breakfast is being hosted and sponsored by Kelcey Packineau, a long-time supporter of MSUB and the powwow. Packineau, whose Indian name is Bears Heart, is a retired police office and owner of Kill Thunder Inc. He is a member of Blackmouth Society, traditional policing function with Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa tribes; as well as of Prairie Chicken clan of the Mandan. He is a traditional dancer, who wears a dog soldier hat. • A variety of vendors from across the region will be on hand on the main floor with a variety of American Indian items for sale.

• A large-screen presentation of pictures of all of the Native Americans who have attended Eastern Montana College and MSUB. • New this year are audience contests for spectators that will occur on Saturday (longest hair, best earrings, best medallion, best belt buckle, etc.) This recognizes popular styles of contemporary dress among Natives and aims to involve more people in the celebration. • A digital storytelling workshop will be held. It will teach how to incorporate still photography into storyboards, add music, and then enhance with text and transitions. Open to the public, the two-day workshop will be held in MSUB’s Library Room 231. The cost is $75; ten MSUB students can attend for free via scholarships. “The 50th anniversary of the Powwow at MSUB is another great reminder that American Indian students have been and continue to be an important part of our campus community. These students play important roles designing and running this event. To help other students make connections to the Powwow, faculty in a number of disciplines have incorporated Powwow assignments into their curricula,” commented MSU Billings Interim Chancellor Dr. Ron Larsen. “We are proud of these student efforts and to be the host of the 50th Powwow celebration. We encourage the public to come and enjoy this cultural cornerstone event.” Event partners include: St. Vincent Healthcare, Rocky Mountain Tribal Leadership Council, Wells Fargo Bank, First Congregational Church, Little Horn State Bank, Ashley Bear Crane family, Fred and Bernadette Charette, Cheyenne Depot, Riverstone Health, Great Plains Gathering Church, Associated Students of MSUB, Smoke Signals, Billings Public School District Two, Adult Resource Alliance of Yellowstone County, Intertribal Indian Club, Billings School District II – Office of Indian Education, MSUB Foundation, Custer Battlefield Trading Post, and Buffalo Chips.

Drive to the top of the world The Beartooth Highway was the brainchild of Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt, a local doctor who wanted to lure tourists to the Red Lodge area that was financially suffering from a waning coal industry. To obtain federal aid, Siegfriedt teamed up with O.H.P. Shelley, founder of Carbon County News, and Congressman Scott Leavitt. Together, the men successfully lobbied for the passage of the Park Approach Act in 1931. The act allocated funds to build roads to national parks. The pass was opened in 1936. The Beartooth Highway begins in the mountain town of Red Lodge and quickly starts climbing steep switchbacks. After winding 20 miles through 50-60 million-year-old mountains, you come to a pullout that provides excellent panoramas of the Beartooth Plateau. From here you can see the Hell Roaring and Silver Run Plateaus to the north. Glacier Lake is also visible, and if you look hard enough, you might even spot a mountain goat or other wildlife. From here, the road keeps ascending and reveals magnificent canyons carved by the Clark’s Fork River. Thirty miles from Red Lodge, you reach the summit of the pass at 10,974 feet. Shortly after, you come upon the only service area along the entire highway at the tiny settlement of Top of the World. The descent provides views of many mountain lakes. Besides breathtaking landscapes, look for wildflowers and

wildlife. Wildflowers grow below treeline in the summers. Indian Paintbrush, monkeyflower, senecio, buttercups, lupine, arrowleaf, balsamroot, beardstongue, and forget-me-nots are among the wildflowers that carpet the country along the Beartooth Highway. Drive with caution and keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mule deer, black bears, grizzly bears, and moose. When you decide to drive the Beartooth Scenic Highway, take your time. There are many excellent recreational opportunities along the way. There are numerous hiking trails off the road, including some that lead to Island Lake and Beartooth Lake. You can take off for a short day hike or a long multi-day trek. The Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail is an excellent 15- to 20-mile hike that goes past the original site of Camp Sawtooth, formerly an exclusive vacation retreat. Cross country skiing is also possible in early June and July. The pass is closed to cars in the winter but is groomed for snowmobiles. For Friends of the Beartooth All-American Road email: info@beartoothhighway.com Check online road report for spring opening dates.

Emil Carlsen’s Quiet Harmonies • March 22 – July 8, 2018 • Opening reception Thurs., March 22, 2018, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Emil Carlsen (1848-1932) is counted among the diverse group of American Post-Impressionist and realist painters who flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Carlsen’s lush, painterly, and deeply satisfying paintings took French Impressionism and later Tonalists’ work a step further in the direction of serenity and quiet sensory beauty. His work reflects the American tendency to appreciate concrete form and clear meaning in subject matter. American landscape painting. His beautiful oils, which capture every season in every guise, are exceptional examples of contemporary landscape painting in the representational mode. Viewers are often overwhelmed by the beauty and emotional associations of his subject matter, becoming increasingly amazed by the realization upon close viewing that Aspevig’s compelling realities are indeed crafted from paint. About Spare Change for Real Change

The Purple 5K raises funds for Spare Change for Real Change, Downtown's non-profit that works to end the cycles of homelessness, poverty, and addiction in Billings. To date, Spare Change for Real Change has been able to grant over $95,000 to very focused and effective work concerning these issues. The majority of funds from 2017 were dedicated to supporting the Motivated Addiction Alternative Program (MAAP), which specifically addresses the issues of chronic, public intoxication and transiency in Billings. The funds allowed for MAAP to hire a Resource Outreach Coordinator & Licensed Addiction Counselor, Josiah Hugs, to ride along with and assist the two Downtown Resource Officers and offer treatment to at-risk individuals. For more information about MAAP and Spare Change for Real Change please visit downtownbillings.com/4realchange Those interested in Volunteering please sign-up at runsignup. com or contact the race director, Mel Barbour at melb@ downtownbillings.com Special thanks to our Title Presenting Sponsors - Big Dipper Ice Cream, Back Country Family Chiropractic, and Singh Contracting.

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround the valley. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area—catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Whereever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com

Thank you, Montana, for our 38 wonderful years in Billings. Retailing has changed a lot since we opened here in 1980, but one thing has stayed the same: our customers are simply the best. Thanks to your loyalty, 2017 was one of our best years ever. As much as we’d love to keep serving you in Billings, we feel it’s time to slow down and make more time for family, friends, and riding the range. Sincerely, The Taubert Family PHOTO CREDIT: ROSS HECOX
