Battlefield Changes Entrance Fee The National Park Service announced today Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument will modify its entrance fees to provide additional funding for infrastructure and maintenance needs to enhance the visitor experience. Effective June 1st, 2018 the entrance fees to the park will be $25 per vehicle and $20 per motorcycle. An annual park pass will cost $80. Revenue from entrance fees remains in the National Park Service and helps ensure a quality experience for all who visit. At Little Bighorn Battlefield NM, at least 80 percent of entrance fees stay in the park and are devoted to spending that supports the visitor experience. We share the other 20 percent of the entry fee income with other national parks for their projects. In response to public comments on a fee proposal released in October 2017, there will be a modest increase for all parks charging an entrance fee, rather than the increased-season fees initially proposed for the 17 highly-visited national parks. Superintendent of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Wayne Challoner, said, “The National Park Service is committed to a quality experience for the visiting public” he went on to add “at Little Bighorn Battlefield recent projects from fees include, preservation and treatment of headstones, corrective foundation repair of the Reno-Benteen Battlefield obelisk and the completed deferred maintenance of the parks entrance road kiosk.” National parks have experienced record breaking visitation, with more than 1.5 billion visitors in the last five years. Throughout the country, the combination of an aging infrastructure and increased visitation has put a strain on park roads, bridges, campgrounds, waterlines, bathrooms, and other visitor services and led to a $11.6 billion deferred maintenance backlog nationwide. Entrance fees collected by the National Park Service totaled $199.9 million in Fiscal Year 2016. The NPS estimates that once fully implemented, the new fee structure will increase annual entrance fee revenue by about $60 million.

Daniel Kosel at Alberta Bair Theater

Crues music is a passionate blend of country, rock, and blues. Born in Seattle and raised in Montana, Kosel began creating poetry and music in the years following the death of his mother to find peace with the challenges born of grief and lost love. His hearty appreciation for artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chet Atkins, Dwight Yoakam, Aretha Franklin, Buddy Holly, George Jones, John Fogerty, Merle Hattard and ZZ Top are evident as strong influences in his style of singing and playing guitar. NOLS Wilderness First Aid at MSUB PE Building

7:45 a.m. – 5 p.m. The NOLS Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will help you prepare for the unexpected with a fun, handson introduction to wilderness medical care. This course is great for people of all ages and experiences, best-suited for those who recreate outdoors where EMS response is expected in a timely manner (< 8 hours). Students who may benefit from a WFA include those who: take short trips relatively close to help, work at wilderness camps, enjoy weekend family outdoor activities, and/or participate in local outdoor recreation. Advanced Barrel Aged Whiskey Blends and Cocktails at MSUB College of Education

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Are you interested in taking barrel aging blended Whiskeys and Whiskey Cocktails to the next level? In this two-part class, you’ll receive advanced recipes for aging your creations at “Cask strength”, learn how to proof your creations before and after barrel aging and then return them to a “standard 80 proof” beverage if desired. At the first class, you will learn some theory behind the cask strength aging, the techniques to create your own and you will have an opportunity to taste different recipes. At the end of this session, you will blend spirits to 122 proof and fill your barrel. Each week at home, you will taste a small sample from your barrel and replace the “Angel’s share” (liquid evaporates from the barrel either water or alcohol depending on temperature and humidity) with some of your original mixture or with the addition of select components of the original recipe. After 3 weeks a second class will be held to return your creation to 80 proof, bottle them and then evaluate participant recipes (small tastes 1/2 oz. or less) by the group. You will be able to take home oak barrels, a spirit hydrometer, graduated cylinder and five to seven, 375 ml bottles of your finished product at the proof you desire between 80-122 proof which make ideal gifts. Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center Open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer beginning on April 28th.

Open Hours

April 28th – Sept. 30th: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Oct. - April 2019: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Walk-ins from the front gate are always welcome after operating hours. $7 per vehicle. Interagency passes are honored and can be purchased at the fee station.

Famous Engraving

A boardwalk leads to Captain Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar for a great view of the surrounding landscape. There are stationary binoculars on top for better viewing. Trails lead visitors past interpretive signs, a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes, and a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. These several miles of hiking trails are a great place for bird and wildlife viewing. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts a Signature Event on July 25th commemorating the day Clark visited and signed the Pillar.

Riverwalk

The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretive center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path include quotes from Clark’s journals and tell the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15th, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 3rd.

Interpretive Center

The interpretive center offers various types of educational resources such as interactive displays and a movie theater. A junior ranger program is also provided by the Bureau of Land Management.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1989 to support Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. Their mission is to preserve and protect the monument by educating visitors through interpretation, special projects, and support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its management of the site. The efforts of the Friends group was a driving force to get the site into the public lands domain, which resulted in the purchase of the historical land from the Foote family by the BLM in 1991. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends group successfully accomplishes this mission.
