Experience a traditional horse-drawn wagon ride through the back of ZooMontana – an area rumored to be haunted and frequented by the Headless Horseman! Listen to the animated story narration of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow while the wagon winds its way through a variety of scenery and spooky sites. It is an eerie adventure yet appropriate for all ages. However, the later it gets in the evening, the more haunted it will become with the darkness. Horror Theater: Asylum. Commit Yourself.

6:30 p.m. Located inside the Moss with 14-person tours starting at 6:30 p.m. Come early to book your tour as they sell out quickly! Tickets available event nights only $18 per person Lose your mind at the Moss! Horror Theater: Asylum and Haunted Maze: Labyrinth Midnight Edition Horror Theater: Asylum October 20 and 27 only Reservations Required and can be purchased online or by calling 2565100. Six shows available these nights starting at 11:30 p.m. $25 per person It’s all fun and screams until someone can’t find their way out of the Labyrinth at the Moss Mansion starting Friday, October 19th. “We’re

particularly excited for this Halloween season”, says Jenna Peete, Executive Director, “because not only are we introducing Asylum, our new Horror Theater experience, but this is the first year our volunteers have built a labyrinth on the grounds. So, prepare to hit a few dead ends as you make your way through the spook-filled maze.” Visitors will also be welcomed into the Moss Mansion for a tour of an asylum inspired by institutions that were considered cutting edge in the early 1900’s. Join a colorful cast of doctors and patients, played by some very talented local actors, as they go about their daily lives. And, for the true night owls out there, the Moss is also offering a special midnight showing of Asylum with bonus scenes…because who doesn’t want to venture up a dark and twisty staircase to the third floor of an old home after everyone else has gone home? And wait, there’s more! A Food Truck will be featured each night along with other treats. Whether you’re in the mood for a snack after being lured in by delicious smelling kettle corn or you’d like a more substantial meal, we have you covered! All proceeds benefit the Moss Mansion, a National Historic Home, local non-profit museum and cultural center. Straight No Chaser

If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither straitlaced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense... and with a sense of humor. On the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act. The upcoming tour coincides with the 10th Anniversary of Straight No Chaser signing with Atlantic Records and the release of their debut album, HOLIDAY SPIRITS after a video of the group performing “12 Days of Christmas” went viral on YouTube and became the most viewed video of 2007. Upon the release of HOLIDAY SPIRITS in 2008, The New York Times predicted: “this may be the year’s most unlikely major label story.” Now, ten years later with six fulllength albums and four EPs under their belt, the group will hit the road to

Combining technical precision, power and passion, Complexions Contemporary Ballet transcends tradition with a groundbreaking mix of styles from ballet to hip hop. Founded by former members of Alvin Ailey, Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden, the company has been featured several times on the hit show So You Think You Can Dance. “We are delighted and excited to share with the audiences in Billings the energy, passion and spirit that Complexions Contemporary Ballet delivers,” said Richardson. “Touring to new cities and interacting with new communities reinforces our aim of bringing our groundbreaking mix of methods, styles, and cultures to all parts of the world…especially the United States. The first half of the show Bach 25 premiered in Arata, California in April 2018. The opening reception will take place in the gallery on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. During the reception, you can enjoy appetizers, view artwork created by Rocky students, and meet the artists. “It’s a truly unique, special feeling to work so hard on a piece and then learn that it will be displayed in a professional gallery,” said Marina Eshelman, an RMC junior art and business dual major whose work has been featured in past RMC Art Student Shows. “It’s exhilarating to have this opportunity to share our work.” A student jury will select artwork based on critical thinking, craftsmanship, composition, aesthetics, and finishing techniques. Each juror will also select a Juror’s Choice award that will be announced during the Oct. 25 opening reception. First, second, and third place overall winners will be announced at the opening reception. “We encourage everyone in the Billings community to come out and support our RMC Art Student Show,” said RMC art professor Mark Moak. “This year, we’ll feature photography, drawing, painting, jewelry, and metalworking. While the image of a witch riding her broomstick across a full moon is one of the more indelible images associated with Halloween, the likelihood of witnessing a full moon on Halloween is pretty slim. According to Moongiant.com, a full moon on Halloween happens an average of just once every 18 or 19 years. That means Halloween celebrants will likely only witness a full moon on Halloween five times every century. In fact, the last time trick-or-treaters went on the prowl for Halloween candy beneath a full moon was October 31, 2001. And Halloween lovers will have to wait just a little bit longer to dodge evil spirits in the light of a full moon, as Moongiant notes the next time a full moon is slated to appear on October 31 is not until 2020.

The Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) is hosting the 17th annual Downtown Trick-or-Treat on Wednesday, October 31st, from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. This free community event offers trick-or-treating for children at participating downtown businesses as a safe and family-friendly Halloween celebration. The DBA office at 2815 2nd Ave. N. will provide maps of participating locations and trick-or-treat bags for children. For more information, go to www.downtownbillings.com. The DBA asks the public to be mindful of traffic and pedestrian patterns downtown in consideration of this children’s event.

Local food pantries across the state are preparing to receive donations from the Hunters Against Hunger program. The program, a partnership between FWP and the Montana Food Bank Network, allows hunters to donate a portion or all of their legally harvested big game animals to be processed free of charge. The meat is then provided directly to a local food pantry in the area. Since its inception in 2014, over 130,000 pounds of meat has been donated through the program and distributed to Montanans struggling with food insecurity through 29 local food pantry sites. Meat is extremely expensive for food pantries to provide, yet a highly nutritious resource for their clients. “We have never in my time here had this much game. Truly a huge gift,” said Jill Holder, operations manager at Gallatin Valley Food Bank, about the impact of the program. Participation by local meat processors and hunters are the keys to success for this growing program. Big game donations (deer, elk, antelope, moose and wild buffalo) can only be accepted as part of the program by authorized participating meat processors set up around the state. Only legally harvested or confiscated big game animals can be donated. No road kill can be donated. A full list of authorized processors can be found at the Montana Food Bank Network website at mf bn. org/hunters-against-hunger To offset the cost of processing, hunters purchasing a Montana hunting license are given the opportunity to make a monetary donation to this program. Additional donations to the program are being accepted by the Montana Food Bank Network.

This fall in Southeast Montana

Yard Office Rd.

As fall moves into full swing, Visit Southeast Montana tourism suggests a throwback activity; Sunday afternoon drives. “While fall in the mountains is spectacular, the prairies, buttes and breaks of Southeast Montana have their own beauty,” said marketing manager Brenda Maas. “Look to river valleys for the golden splendor of massive cottonwoods, but remember that the leaves on prairie grasses change, too. The mauve colors are amazing.” Maas suggests daybreak and dusk as ideal times for prairie “colors,” especially as they pertain to photography and wildlife watching. She offers the following sample routes for travelers and locals alike. Prairie Tour Montana Highway 7 from Wibaux to Baker to Ekalaka cuts across the rolling prairies of Southeast Montana. Be sure to stop at Medicine Rocks State Park for a closer look at the pictographs and petroglyphs from past centuries. See http://www.southeastmontana.com/medicine-rocks for more information.

Prairie Tour 2 The Warrior Trail, or what is locally known as the “212 Cutoff,” crosses both the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations and exemplifies the autumn beauty of Southeast Montana’s prairies. Just east of Ashland, the Custer National Forest surprises visitors with more jagged terrain, dotted with pines. For more details on recreation areas, see the Ashland Ranger District’s map at: https://www.fs.usda. gov/recarea/custergallatin/recarea/?recid=60823 Musselshell River Tour Follow MT Highway 12 from Ryegate to Roundup to Melstone, Ingomar and Forsyth. Stop at the RiverWalk in Roundup for a closer look and to stretch your legs. From Forsyth, follow the Yellowstone River tour but don’t forget to stop at a local shop for a bite to eat. Yellowstone River Middle Tour Montana Old Highway 10, which skirts between the Yellowstone River and I-90, features golden cottonwood colors and several stops along the Trail to the Little Bighorn, a series of 19 roadside markers that highlight the U.S.7th Cavalry’s activities leading up to and immediately following the Battle of Little Bighorn. Download a detailed map at: http://www. southeastmontana.com/files/little-bighorn-trail-map.pdf. Traveling west from Forsyth, take Old Highway 10, which becomes Montana Highway 311, continue through Hysham (stop for a selfie with the statues at the Yucca Theater) on 311, and veer right when 311 turns to become Myers Road/ Highway 311. Cross the Yellowstone River on Myers Bridge – stop on the north side for a brief walk-about at Howrey Island Recreation Area – continue on Myers Road, which becomes Pease Bottom Road to Musselshell Trail Road south to I-90 in

Custer. To view Bighorn River Valley colors, backtrack east and take Highway 47 south to Hardin to I-90 or continue up the valley to Fort Smith and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Battlefield Tour The five-mile ridgetop drive from Last Stand Hill to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument reveals more fall-flaming 437 Exitundulating, prairies with the Wolf and Bighorn Mountain ranges in the distance. For a more enriched experience, continue east on highway 212 and turn south on Montana 314 to the Rosebud Battlefield State Park.

Fall does not mean closed

Several attractions continue with seasonal hours, and Pompeys Pillar National Monument is another great option for fall colors. Climb the 202 steps to the top of the pillar for an uninhibited 360-degree view of fall splendor along the Yellowstone River. With extended seasonal hours until Oct. 31, the Pompeys Pillar experience includes a short introductory video, interactive exhibits, dugout canoes that kids can climb into and William Clark’s signature carved into the rock in 1806 – the only remaining visible, physical evidence that the Corps of Discovery traversed this area.

Huntley Museum

Several other region museums are open year-round, including Big Horn County Museum, WaterWorks Art Museum, Range Riders Museum, Huntley Museum of Irrigated Agriculture, Carter County Museum, St. Labre Indian School Museum, O’Fallon Historical Museum and numerous Billings-area museums. Several others, like Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery will open by appointment. Visit Southeast Montana, one of the state’s tourism regions, strives to increase visitation by increasing awareness of the region, showcasing cultural heritage, developing memorable experiences and educating residents about the economic benefits of tourism. Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would

become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Pictograph Cave State Park

Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three

main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and 45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

NOVA Center For The Performing Arts’ Youth Conservatory presents

THE MIKADO (sort of )

The Mikado (Sort of) will be performed November 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $16 for adults, $10 for students, seniors and military. The Mikado (Sort of) is based on the Gilbert and Sullivan production of the same name. This reimagining takes place in a galaxy far, far, away. Nanki-Who, son of the potentate of Mars-apan, The Mikado, fled his father’s imperial court to escape a forced marriage with Katisha, a not-so-attractive, elderly robot. Nanki-Who met and fell in love with Hum-Hum, a lovely young woman with two protective sisters. Hum-Hum, however, was already betrothed to her overlord, which forced Nanki-Who to contemplate leaving ZuZu-Who, once again, in despair.
