The Oak Ridge Boys Celebrate Christmas

For 30 years, Country Music Hall of Fame members The Oak Ridge Boys have been a part of their fans’ holiday seasons with their annual Christmas tour. This year, the Grammy Awardwinning group will play to sold out venues across America during the 2018 Celebrate Christmas tour, which takes the group to more than two dozen cities in 18 states throughout the U.S., November 14 through December 22. A mixture of traditional and contemporary songs—including religious, romantic and fun holiday tunes—makes up the set list, which includes songs from the Oaks’ six bestselling Christmas CDs. A highlight of the evening is the muchloved ‘rocking chair’ segment where each BOY rocks by the fireplace and shares personal thoughts about Christmas. “Christmas is my favorite time of year,” says Oaks’ lead singer, Duane

Allen. “I love the positive things about the season.... the joy, happiness, giving, sharing, time with family, and gifts, the beautiful lights and decorations, Christmas music, special food, and most of all the true meaning, which, of course, is celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

MSU Billings art department presents

Lucht’s senior capstone exhibition

Exhibit open Nov. 30 through Dec. 7 Maci Lucht, a senior art student at MSU Billings, will host her solo capstone exhibit Reaping What You Sow beginning Nov. 30 through Dec. 7 in the student gallery, located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building. Reaping What You Sow- Within ranching, there is value in the simplicity of life. The idea of reaping what you sow is very important in this line of work. Ranching is very hands on. For a rancher, the main tool that they use is their hands. Working, persevering, studying, and sacrifice are all part of a rancher’s everyday life. “I want to render the essence of tactility and how the rancher uses their callused hands each day to complete different tasks,” shared Lucht. “The tangible aspects are what I find most intriguing and the deep connection that the rancher has to working with their hands.” Lucht is a contemporary artist working with various drawing and painting media but mostly focuses on watercolor. Her ranching background gives her an insight and close personal relationship with the idea of reaping what you sow. She is currently a senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in Art at MSUB. An artist reception will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6. The show and reception are free and open to the public. For more information contact Mark Earnhardt, assistant professor of Art, 657-2148 or mark.earnhart@msubillings. edu, or the artist, Maci Lucht at 307-272-6733 or maci_may_ kh_05@yahoo.com.

Boender has sung in Billings with the Rimrock Opera in Aïda and The Crucible and sings in the University Chorus, as well as the Chamber Singers. He has sung at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church for 11 years and cantors for several other churches as well. In addition, he was a Senator in the MSUB Student Government. Boender’s recital will be accompanied by pianist Tim Schoessler, and will include vocalists Emerald Hart, Hanna Jandro, Kieran Beebe, and Madyson Feuerstein. The evening’s program will include works by Mozart, Sondheim, Schubert, and Caccini. The daughter of Jody Getchell and Joan Ferguson, Getchell graduated from Billings Central High School in Billings, and has studied voice with Professor Nagel since 2014. She has been an active participant in the MSU Billings Chamber Singers & University Choir and has also been in many community productions including A Little Night Music, The Magic Flute, and The Lantern Marriage. A Child’s Christmas The Polar Express Increases to 10 shows In Wales at NOVA NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, 6 p.m., December 9th,

The Polar Express is a family-favorite event based off the award-winning book and movie. This magical production for children of all ages begins when the kids arrive dressed in their pajamas. The kids receive hot chocolate and cookies, then eagerly snuggle up on a large red rug surrounding the stage where local actors reenact scenes from the story. At the appropriate point in the story, Santa arrives at the Depot on a train headed for the North Pole! Santa will come in to sing songs and take a photo with the children. Each child will receive a Christmas book to take home and share with the family. Kids will also have an opportunity to participate in a number of crafts, listen to a story, and take a ride around the Depot on our miniature train. Recommended ages for Polar Express are 3 to 8 years of age but of course, any child is welcome to participate. Due to the speed at which the last event sold out, the Billings Depot has added two more shows to let even more children enjoy the event. The Polar Express will begin on Thursday, November 29 and run through Sunday, December 9. The price of tickets will be $26 per child, $18 per adult and $5 per infant under one year. This price includes all crafts, hot cocoa, cookies, Santa photo and book for each child. Tickets go on sale Monday, November 5 on the Billings Depot website: BillingsDepot.org. Show Dates & Times: Doors open 45 minutes before showtime. • Thursday, November 29: 6 p.m. • Friday, November 30: 6 p.m. • Saturday, December 1: Noon and 4 p.m. • Sunday, December 2: 1 p.m. • Thursday, December 6: 6 p.m. • Friday, December 7: 6 p.m. • Saturday, December 8: Noon and 4 p.m. • Sunday, December 9: 1 p.m.

For over 60 years, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, a family recollection written by Dylan Thomas, one of the best known and loved poets of the 20th Century, has been as much a part of the Christmas pageant of stories and films as A Christmas Carol and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, both published in the early 19th Century. Aside from the biblical story of the Nativity, few holiday-related works of literature can claim the distinction of being so universally loved and enjoyed, as well as embody the fundamental ideals the holiday represents. A Child’s Christmas in Wales is a joyful, memoir of Welsh traditions and family quirks, the humor and pathos of life in an ordinary community with extraordinary characters and charm. Like Under Milkwood, Dylan Thomas’s tale is a classic because, like its predecessors, including the story of the lowly birth the holiday celebrates, it encompasses and revels in the reality of the human condition. This delightful story is presented by NOVA, read by Welshman, and recently arrived Montana resident, Dulais Rhys, and includes a five minute, non-optional, compulsory, Welsh language lesson. Dulais has the unique experience of A Child’s Christmas in Wales reminding him of his own childhood and the audience is invited to join in the riotous fun. The presentation includes events in Dylan Thomas’s life and visits to the U.S., his work, as well as audio examples of the poet’s unique reading voice.

The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

How to Stretch Your Holiday Budget by Saving on Mobile Devices (StatePoint) With this year’s holiday spending expected to rise over last year, according to the National Retail Federation estimates, you may be planning to spend more on décor, giftgiving and travel. If your seasonal plans also include upgrading mobile devices for yourself or for loved ones, keep in mind that you can make room in your budget for those other holiday expenditures by not paying the price for a brand-new model. The alternative? A refurbished device. Experts say the idea that all refurbished devices were broken or had problems in a past life is a misconception. “Whether you’re bargain hunting or you’re looking to go green and reduce electronic waste, you’re in luck,” says David Conti, senior director of eCommerce at MyWit. “In today’s market it is very easy to find affordable, high-quality refurbished devices.” Indeed, many mobile phones, tablets and accessories that come from trade-in and upgrade programs were perfectly good devices that owners traded in for newer models. With so many consumers out there reliably seeking the latest, such trade-

ins and sales are becoming more popular, making it easier to navigate the market for a previously owned device. If you do go this route this holiday season, be sure to stick with reputable sources where you can trust the device to be in fully functional condition and opt for the longest guarantee available, at least 90 days. For example, those from MyWit undergo an extensive 65+ point inspection of cosmetics, functionality and connectivity to ensure optimal performance. Tests verify every function that a customer can use (camera, audio, SIM, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) is in 100 percent working order and connectivity tests ensure wireless devices deliver a consistent quality of connection and do not drop available signals. When it comes to mobile upgrades, replacements and tech gifts, you can make this holiday season merrier and more affordable with refurbished devices.

The Nutcracker Billings MT- The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale (BSO&C) presents The Nutcracker in three performances: Saturday, November 24 at 2 pm and 7 pm, and Sunday, November 25 at 2 pm at the Alberta Bair Theater. Tickets range from $28.50 to $53.50. The Nutcracker is performed by the San Diego Ballet under the artistic direction of Robin Morgan. Returning guest conductor Ming Luke along with more than 100 local child singers and dancers, take the stage for this charming Thanksgiving weekend tradition. With its signature theatrics and beloved choreography, the San Diego Ballet delivers a light-hearted interpretation of this holiday classic that is expressive and dramatic. Principal dancers are seasoned professionals who bring strong brilliant technique, expressive artistry and high energy to this wellloved ballet. Audiences easily connect with their inspired performances to Peter Tchaikovsky’s beloved score performed live by the Billings Symphony Orchestra in the pit below the stage. Roles such as the Sugar Babes, Candy Canes, Gingersnaps, and the Boys & Girls Party Scene will be filled by local dancers under the direction of Betty Loos and Julia Marble of the Montana Dance Center. Lila Virostko, Madelynn Hust, and Macey Groener will dance the role of Clara. Brynn Soggard and Layli Virstko will dance as Fritz. In addition to local dancers cast in the ballet, vibrant young vocalists with the ROCK Children’s Choir under the direction of Janie Sutton will sing during the snow scene. Families will delight in the classic version of this Billings

Thanksgiving weekend tradition of more than 30 years. “Must –see” simply doesn’t capture the live music, high energy of the talented cast, and special stage effects. This annual event would not be possible without the generous support of Stockman Bank. The Nutcracker is also supported with funds from the Montana Cultural Trust, the Montana Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Billings Symphony’s 2018-2019 season is presented by the Oakland Companies. Tickets are available by at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office by calling 256-6052 or online at albertabairtheater.org. This fall in Southeast Montana As fall moves into full swing, Visit Southeast Montana tourism suggests a throwback activity; Sunday afternoon drives.

“While fall in the mountains is spectacular, the prairies, buttes and breaks of Southeast Montana have their own beauty,” said marketing manager Brenda Maas. “Look to river valleys for the golden splendor of massive cottonwoods, but remember that the leaves on prairie grasses change, too. The mauve colors are amazing.”

Yard Office Rd.

Maas suggests daybreak and dusk as ideal times for prairie “colors,” especially as they pertain to photography and wildlife watching. She offers the following sample routes for travelers and locals alike. Prairie Tour Montana Highway 7 from Wibaux to Baker to Ekalaka cuts across the rolling prairies of Southeast Montana. Be sure to stop at Medicine Rocks State Park for a closer look at the pictographs and petroglyphs from past centuries. See http://www.southeastmontana.com/medicine-rocks for more information. Prairie Tour 2 The Warrior Trail, or what is locally known as the “212 Cut-off,” crosses both the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations and exemplifies the autumn beauty of Southeast Montana’s prairies. Just east of Ashland, the Custer National Forest surprises visitors with more jagged terrain, dotted with pines. For more details on recreation areas, see the Ashland Ranger District’s map at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ custergallatin/recarea/?recid=60823 Musselshell River Tour Follow MT Highway 12 from Ryegate to Roundup to Melstone, Ingomar and Forsyth. Stop at the RiverWalk in Roundup for a closer look and to stretch your legs. From Forsyth, follow the Yellowstone River tour but don’t forget to stop at a local shop for a bite to eat. Yellowstone River Middle Tour Montana Old Highway 10, which skirts between the Yellowstone River and I-90, features golden cottonwood colors and several stops along the Trail to the Little Bighorn, a series of 19 roadside markers that highlight the U.S.7th Cavalry’s activities leading up to and immediately following the Battle of Little Bighorn. Download a detailed map at: http://www. southeastmontana.com/files/little-bighorn-trail-map.pdf. Traveling west from Forsyth, take Old Highway 10, which becomes Montana Highway 311, continue through Hysham (stop for a selfie with the statues at the Yucca Theater) on 311, and veer right when 311 turns to become Myers Road/ Highway 311. Cross the Yellowstone River on Myers Bridge – stop on the north side for a brief walk-about at Howrey Island Recreation Area – continue on Myers Road, which becomes Pease Bottom Road to Musselshell Trail Road south to I-90 in

Custer. To view Bighorn River Valley colors, backtrack east and take Highway 47 south to Hardin to I-90 or continue up the valley to Fort Smith and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Battlefield Tour The five-mile ridgetop drive from Last Stand Hill to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument reveals more fall-flaming 437 Exitundulating, prairies with the Wolf and Bighorn Mountain ranges in the distance. For a more enriched experience, continue east on highway 212 and turn south on Montana 314 to the Rosebud Battlefield State Park.

Fall does not mean closed

Several attractions continue with seasonal hours, and Pompeys Pillar National Monument is another great option for fall colors. Climb the 202 steps to the top of the pillar for an uninhibited 360-degree view of fall splendor along the Yellowstone River. With extended seasonal hours until Oct. 31, the Pompeys Pillar experience includes a short introductory video, interactive exhibits, dugout canoes that kids can climb into and William Clark’s signature carved into the rock in 1806 – the only remaining visible, physical evidence that the Corps of Discovery traversed this area. Several other region museums are open year-round,

Huntley Museum

including Big Horn County Museum, WaterWorks Art Museum, Range Riders Museum, Huntley Museum of Irrigated Agriculture, Carter County Museum, St. Labre Indian School Museum, O’Fallon Historical Museum and numerous Billings-area museums. Several others, like Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery will open by appointment. Visit Southeast Montana, one of the state’s tourism regions, strives to increase visitation by increasing awareness of the region, showcasing cultural heritage, developing memorable experiences and educating residents about the economic benefits of tourism. Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. Christmas time is coming! For some it may be way too soon, for others it can’t come soon enough. No matter how you feel about the timing of the Christmas holiday, there are things that ring true for most of us. NOVA Center for the Performing Arts presents a classic yuletide tradition….A Christmas Carol. This classic Dickens tale opens the weekend of December 7th and continues the weekend of December 14th. Even if one is familiar with the “Bah Humbug!” of Ebenezer Scrooge, the Spirits of Christmas’ Past, Present and Yet to Come, the warmth of the Cratchit family, or the cheerful blessing of Tiny Tim, it is a journey from greedy self-absorption to the warmth and hope recognized in every human heart, that is well worth the time. A poignant reminder for all that each of us has the power to see what’s best in ourselves and others. With an outstanding cast of seasoned actors and budding young thespians, this is a gift to give yourself as you prepare for the hectic Christmas time ahead. Directed by Gary Treglown, A Christmas Carol, comes alive on the main stage at NOVA with pathos, humor, music and holiday joy.

A Christmas Carol at NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, 2317 Montana Avenue. December 7-9 and 14-16, 7:30pm Fridays and Saturdays, 2:00pm on Sundays. Tickets are $21 for adults, $16 for seniors and military, $10 for students, available online at www. novabillings.org, at the box office Tuesday-Friday from noon-6pm, or by calling 406-591-9535.

3 Easy Ways to Illuminate Your Home for the Holidays (StatePoint) ‘Tis the season of friends, family and entertaining! If you’re planning on hosting guests -- whether for an entire week of family fun or a one-night celebration -- now’s the time to get your home in the holiday spirit. “Preparing a home for the holidays doesn’t have to require adding extensive decorations or undergoing a total remodel to update favorite spaces,” says Jennifer Kis, director of marketing communications for Progress Lighting. “Small changes through lighting can create a festive and comfortable environment with minimal effort and investment.”

Here are three easy tips to try:

Update Entryways and Foyers. Your entryway is your opportunity to make an exceptional first impression and set the tone for the rest of the interior. Add drama to your foyer with a grouping of striking, oversized pendant lights in lieu of a traditional chandelier. Pay Attention to Shared Spaces. Popular spaces where friends and family are likely to gather most during the holidays include great rooms, living rooms and dining areas. A large statement chandelier in a common living space creates a focal point and also ensures there is enough illumination for card games, movies and coffee and cocoa by the fireside. Illuminate Walkways to Enhance Curb Appeal. Simple outdoor lighting techniques can improve a home’s appearance and also offer functional features during the holidays and beyond. Added illumination will improve safety and enhance security, while bringing a new bold look to the front of your home. To create instant curb appeal, hang a large lantern on either side of your front door, or install a post lantern at the front of your walkway. For more design inspiration and to view on-trend lighting collections, visit progresslighting.com. In a few easy steps, you can light up your home for a warm and welcoming holiday season.

Quilt Shops *BACKDOOR QUILT SHOPPE: Famous for its “quilting bee” atmosphere. That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter.
