Find a Hotel to Fit Your Travel Needs (Family Features) When most people plan a trip, the focus is on the purpose of the journey, whether it’s a work-related jaunt or a vacation with loved ones. Researching and organizing travel for an upcoming trip is important, but so is finding the perfect place to make your journey easier, more productive and successful. Proximity will almost always be a factor in selecting the right hotel, but the travel experts at Hyatt Place recommend paying special attention to a few essential details that can make an impact on your overall travel and hotel experience. Guest-centered accommodations. It’s often the little things that make the biggest impact when you’re traveling far from home. Keep the core purpose of your trip in mind as you explore hotel accommodations, and look for those that are most thoughtfully designed around your needs. Seek out hotel options that can make it easier for guests to blur the lines between business and leisure travel with dedicated spaces to work, sleep and play and features like comfy sectional sofas, separate sleeping and living areas and contemporary bathrooms. Better basics. Waking well rested after a long night is a start, but an exceptional breakfast experience can make your day even better. As part of its upgraded breakfast buffet, Hyatt Place hotels across the U.S. now feature regional recipes. For example, hotels in the South feature a turkey sausage and pimento biscuit sandwich, and hotels in the Atlantic region feature cinnamon French toast with apple butter. In addition to five regional offerings, hotel guests will find an expanded breakfast buffet featuring cage-free scrambled and hard-boiled eggs, all-natural bacon and sausage, Greek yogurt, fresh-cut fruit, steel-cut oatmeal, a rosemary-garlic potato medley and artisanal breads. Lifestyle options. Whether you want to relax with your morning paper or mix and mingle following a day’s work, it can be liberating to know you have options outside your hotel room. No matter the time of day, public areas, like a spacious lobby and lounge, 24-hour fitness center or indoor or outdoor pool, can provide a chance to enjoy new scenery. Convenient amenities. Many hotels offer the basics, but with an option like Hyatt Place hotels, amenities are purposeful, making your trip as productive and seamless as possible. From free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and guestrooms to a business center with remote printing and freshly prepared food offerings available throughout the day, guests’ travel and dining needs are covered. Thoughtful service. It goes without saying that quality customer care is an expectation for any stay, but there are some hotels that take service to an extra level. The front desk staff is often the best trained, but it’s pretty simple to spot a hotel that puts a real emphasis on the guest experience. Checking in feels more like a welcome than a process with hosts offering a friendly smile, a greeting in the hallway or a friendly conversation. If you’re traveling to a new city, try reading reviews to get a sense for a hotel’s approach to guest services. Start planning your next trip at hyattplace.com and discover why you’ll never have to settle.

Jon Lodge Exhibition at MSU-Billings

MATRIXXMODULATION The masterful work of Jon Lodge, a Montana native, is more than a piece of art on the wall, it is a conceptual exercise of pattern recognition and a journey into universal principals. He exhibits the extensive and studied byproduct of processes extracted from the world of planned randomness and science. This is the randomness we experience on a daily basis and yet have no idea of the gravitational coordination controlling it. The diverse, interactive and yet minimalistic approach to the work creates a subtext of awareness for the elements and puzzling realities harbored beneath fabrication, surface tension and random sequences. From work with light, to sound, to 3-D installations this collection will inspire you to relish the very air around you and encourage you to engage with the work in a fun and immersive way. Lodge’s exhibition emphasizes the interplay of process and material—utilizing as a starting point, planned systems of randomness (stochastic process) and including interactive, evolving elements to engage visitors as creative partners. Methodologies of music composition and print media/ image reproduction merge to generate artworks that exhibit components of and connections among these disparate sources.

composition inspired him to develop systems within which to manipulate these non-traditional materials into artworks. Lodge states, “My work is related to one central concept, that of stochastic process—an organized system that produces FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 28TH random results. Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 11 The Irish Rovers, from left: Fred Graham, Sean O’Driscoll, Davey Walker, Morris Crum, Gerry O’Connor, George Millar, Ian Millar, Geoffrey Kelly.

The Irish Rovers farewell tour The Irish Rovers return to Alberta Bair Theater with The Farewell Continues tour on Thursday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. to support The Scottish Album, their latest album that reflects the Scottish influence on their Northern Irish roots. Last year, to celebrate the Gold Anniversary of their breakout hit from their second album The Unicorn, The Irish Rovers released The Unicorn, the Continuing Story and gave us the long-awaited sequel to their famed Unicorn song and answered the question of what happened to the unicorns when the ark left them stranded on the shore. The Unicorn, a“lucky little ditty” of a title track written by Shel Silverstein, took The Rovers from folk clubs of America to concert halls and television sets worldwide. For more than 50 years “these international ambassadors of Irish music have maintained their timeless ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance of good cheer—one that will soon have you singing and clapping along,” says the Belfast Telegraph. “Their songs have become anthems of revelry and joy among generation after generation of fans.” The Rovers have recently been officially honored as one of Ireland’s greatest émigrés by EPIC, Ireland’s newest and most state of the art museum. “The Irish Rovers are iconic, world class and with very a long career,” says Mervyn Greene, Dublin’s EPIC Ireland Museum Director. “As it happens, The Unicorn album is part of EPIC’s Irish Rovers installation.”

Since the 60s, the Celtic super-group travelled the world as musical ambassadors taking them as far as the Arctic Circle, Japan, and Germany, with regular tours to Australia, New Zealand, and the US. The Rovers first became known in the 60s on shows like The Tonight Show, The Smothers Brothers, Mike Douglas Show, The Dating Game (George Millar actually won the date), and even starring in The Virginian. In the 70s they hosted their first of three international television series, The Irish Rovers Show, and throughout the next 20 years their weekly television shows brought Ireland into living rooms of America. More recently, their 2012 Drunken Sailor album went viral on YouTube, made news headlines back home in Belfast and put them back on radio across North America. The 2015 50 Years triple CD broke tour sales records, while the lads returned to the small screen with three North American television specials, The Irish Rovers Home In Ireland, The Irish Rovers Christmas, The Irish Rovers LIVE on St. Patrick’s Day / 50th Anniversary Special, all produced in the last few years. Tickets, $50, $37, and $20 for students with valid I.D. are on sale at the ABT Box office, located at 2801 Third Avenue North, and by phone at (406) 256-6052 and online at www. albertabairtheater.org.

New Curator Joins the Yellowstone Art Museum The Yellowstone Art Museum has announced that Susan Barnett of Erie, Pennsylvania, has accepted the position of Curator. Bryan W. Knicely, Executive Director stated, “We are pleased to hire Susan after a lengthy national search, and we are happy to announce that this is a homecoming for her.” Although she spent the past 16 years in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, Montana is still the place she calls home. Barnett discovered her passion for curatorial work as a student at Montana State University in Bozeman. After earning her BA in Fine Art–Printmaking, she was hired as Director and Curator of Anaconda’s Copper Village Museum and Art Center. She founded and managed a gallery in Butte for 14 years and then moved to Wisconsin. There, she served as Executive Director and Curator for the Cedarburg Cultural Center, managed a private art collection, and worked on an exhibition and publication commemorating 40 years of the Kohler Arts/ Industry program. Since 2017, as Curator of the Erie Art Museum in Erie, Pennsylvania, she has organized more than 20 exhibitions and cared for a collection of 8,000 objects. Barnett earned an MA in Art History and a Certificate in Museum Studies from UW-Milwaukee. Her research areas include contemporary art, studio craft, American art and history, and non-Western art. “The mission of the Yellowstone Art Museum resonates with my appreciation of art both as a historic document that reflects a community and the social glue that binds it,” Barnett stated. “The Yellowstone Art Museum not only ‘exhibits, interprets, collects, and preserves art’ but strives to achieve ‘enrichment, education, inspiration, and enjoyment’ for all. This requires a commitment to welcoming people of all backgrounds, connecting programming with curriculum and funding, engaging people who don’t think art is for them, breaking down perceptions of elitism, and making exhibitions both scholarly and fun. I look forward to the challenge.” An avocational cellist and photographer, Barnett has performed in numerous symphonies, sung with choral groups, and served on the boards of various arts organizations. She has also juried art exhibitions and served on grants review panels. YAM’s Board President Paul Cox stated, “We are delighted that Susan will lead the curatorial team as we continue to plan the future of the museum. Her background and knowledge of artists, will be an asset going forward.” Barnett will be introduced to the public at two events, the YAM’s Art Auction 51 on March 9, as well as the Artists’ Reception the evening before on March 8, and will fill her post shortly thereafter.

LOCHWOOD BLUEGRASS BAND

Lochwood Bluegrass Band, Saturday, March 9, at 8:00 PM at Cisel Hall, MSU-B Campus. Sponsored by Yellowstone Public Radio, Yellowstone Bluegrass Association, Hansen Music, and Kirk Violins. Admission $20. Doors open at 7:30. Lochwood, Montana’s most traditional Bluegrass band! Coming together in 2014, the goal of this band has always been playing the music the “right” way in the tradition of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and the Stanley Bros. Featuring 3-part harmonies, hard driving rhythms and exciting solos. The band members come from all over the country but the common theme is the rural Mountain values found in western Montana. Richie Reinholdt, was born in Japan and grew up in San Diego, CA. Richie has been a major player in the acoustic scene (and some of that Rock and Roll music) of western Montana area for many years, performing with the regionally successful Live Wire Choir from 1976 through 1979 and has performed on stages world wide during his long music career. Richie keeps us on the right path with his knowledge of Bluegrass tradition & solid guitar work. Richie also adds lead and harmony vocals as well as songwriting to the band. John Parker, from Burlington, NJ, has been leading bands in the Western MT area since the mid 1970s. His band Finley Creek was a mainstay in the area for many years. We’re happy to have his skills on bass and vocals with Lochwood. Steve Taft, from Jamestown, ND, cut his bluegrass teeth in the Seattle BG scene playing solid banjo in many well-known bands, most recently Brothers Keeper. He’s also appeared regularly with Rural Delivery and was a founding member of Lonesome Road. Chad Fadely, from Hot Springs, AR, has been the go-to mandolin player in Western Montana for more than 20 years. Usually active in multiple bands, Chad keeps busy playing that Bluegrass style he loves and when he’s not playing mandolins or guitars, he’s selling them at Music Villa in Bozeman, MT. Taylor Buckley, a MT native from Roundup, is the newest member of the band the youngest! Taylor grew up playing Bluegrass fiddle with his family band, The Buckley’s. After an extended stay on the east coast, Taylor is now back in his home state of Montana and was recruited to the before his bags were unpacked! We’re so very happy to have Taylor in the band playing Fiddle and adding to the 3-part harmonies.

Events will include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Celtic Fair, and a street party hosted by Hooligan’s Sports Bar. The St. Patrick’s Day Street Party

Hooligan’s Sports Bar’s St.Patrick’s Day Street Party includes an outdoor stage with live music performed by local Billings’ band Kicking Karma. Sportsball will have a game of “hammerlachen” happening on 2nd Ave North in front of Rock Creek Coffee Roasters. Samuel Hensler, Creator of Sportsball said: “The game we choose is typically called ‘hammerschlagen’ which is a very German name, so for St.Patrick’s day purposes we named it something that sounded

more Irish. We try to play obscure and fun sports in Sportball; something you may have played in a backyard or a version of the typical league sport but with a twist.” Hensler, and the Sportsball group invite the public to stop by in the afternoon to watch a round of ‘hammerlachen’ or participate for a small donation.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Traveling Frankenstein exhibit at MSU Billings Library Open through March 17 The Montana State University Billings Library is featuring a traveling exhibit Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature, on display through March 17. The six-banner traveling exhibit explores the Birth of Frankenstein, the life of author Mary Shelley, the scientific search for the principle of life, and the transformation of the “monster” in popular culture. Hours: • Monday-Thursday: 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. • Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Sunday: 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature is produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) which works in touring the exhibit to American Libraries. Their goal is to create exciting and informative exhibits that increase awareness and appreciation for the health information resources of the NLM. “We are very excited to be hosting another exhibit from the NLM; we enjoy seeing students come into the library to check out the display,” said reference librarian Eileen Wright,

“We are very happy that we get to be a part of this national exhibition tour once again.” On a dark and stormy night in 1816, Mary Shelley began writing a story that posed profound questions about individual and societal responsibility for other people. To make her point, the young novelist used the scientific advances of her era and the controversies surrounding them as a metaphor for issues of unchecked power and self-serving ambition, and their effect on the human community. Since that time, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, has become one of the Western world’s most enduring myths. The story provides a framework for discussions of medical advances that challenge our traditional understanding of what it means to be human. A lecture highlighting this exhibit will be presented by Tom Nurmi on March 12 at 6:30 p.m. to begin the Library’s spring lecture series. His lecture, The Prometheus Paradox: How Monsters Make Us Human, is based on Frankenstein and the display by the NLM. Those who attend the lecture are encouraged to check out the exhibit as they visit the library. For more information and to learn more about this exhibit, contact reference librarian Eileen Wright at ewright@ msubillings.edu or (406) 657-1656.

18 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

Pirogue Island State Park This week's focus takes us to just a mile north of Miles City, a little more than two hours from Billings by way of Interstate 94, on the north side of a bend in the Yellowstone River, to Pirogue Island State Park. In addition to extensive hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing, the island is a documented site where Lewis and Clark camped in 1806 on the return voyage of their famous expedition. An isolated, cottonwood-covered island located on the Yellowstone River, Pirogue Island State Park is an excellent location for enjoying the natural beauty of Montana. While wading through channels of the Yellowstone River is the most popular way to get to Pirogue Island, others stop by as they float down the river. Did you know? Pirogue Island State Park is 500 miles from where the Yellowstone River begins and 170 miles from where it ends. No camping at Pirogue Island, but you can go: • Bird Watching or Wildlife Viewing • Boating • Fishing • Hunting • Picnicking • Plus so much more! A local treasure with a wide variety of bird species including passerines, belted kingfishers, shorebirds, waterfowl, and bald eagles as well as both whitetail and mule deer, the island is an excellent location for wildlife viewing. The island also boasts prominent plant life with more than 140 species of plants including a healthy population of cottonwood trees, peach-leaf willow, green ash and red-osier dogwood. For visitors who enjoy hiking, Pirogue Island features 2.8 miles of designated hiking trails with interpretive signs offering insights on the history and wildlife of the island. Looking for more than 2.8 miles? You’re in luck! As a very level site, visitors will find an easy walk throughout the 269 acres and when the water isn’t flowing, visitors can take a walk along the tree-shaded side channels and wade through the pools of water that form during hot weather.

DID YOU KNOW? Enjoy a treasure hunt? Pirogue Island is a great location to search for moss agates. Moss agates are a unique agate that is often found with a lime coloring and gets its name for its resemblance of the color of moss, which was given to it prior to its scientific name and has stuck. Curious what other visitors had to say? • "Good spot for hunting and fishing." • "Growing up in this area I never discovered this until I went back and visited. There is a great trail (about 6 miles) that takes you all around the park and next to the river." • "I love the walking trail and having the chance to see wildlife." • "This state park is in a very interesting setting. It is an island in the Yellowstone River outside of Miles City, MT. There are picnic tables and restrooms and interesting trails to walk beside walking over to the island when the water is low. This is a great place to go with a family when the weather is nice. Springtime would not be good, the water would be too high to reach the island."
