Successful AS/NZS ISO 3834 Audit at A&B Welding
Welder
Tullawong High School
It is with great sadness that I inform all Weld Australia members that our great friend and colleague, Paolo Corronca has returned home to Sardinia.
Paolo had only recently joined Weld Australia (then the WTIA) from Italy, and was acting as company photographer, when I took on the role of CEO at Weld Australia in 2014.
Paolo had recently arrived in Australia from Italy with a Masters Degree in Engineering and a newly minted International Welding Engineer (IWE) qualification. Prior to joining Weld Australia, Paolo had been a Mechanical Engineer at Remosa SpA in Italy—a manufacturer of valves and actuating systems for the oil and gas market. In this role, Paolo
had managed over 100 international projects and supervised over 40 turnarounds and shut-downs.
It didn’t take me long to work out that his talents were being under-utilised as a photographer.
So, Paolo was initially promoted into the role of Manager for Industry Networks, in which he was responsible for the Power Generation, Defence and Infrastructure Groups. After 18 months in that role, he expressed an interest to join the Engineering team, to which I was happy to accede.
In this role, he relocated to Adelaide for a time, taking on the position of South Australian State Manager. He did very well in Adelaide, and passed an MBA with a high distinction while he was there.
On Paolo’s return to New South Wales, he was promoted again to become the head of our Qualification and Certification team. This was a role in which Paolo excelled.
He played a key role in growing AS/NZS ISO 3834 Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials, EN 15085 Railway applications — welding of railway vehicles and components, and AS/NZS ISO 9606-1 Qualification test of welders — Fusion welding in Australia.
For the last two years, Paolo was our National Manager, Engineering. He oversaw all our engineering services, as well as our qualification and certification capabilities.
Paolo has a tremendously positive attitude towards life. His sense of humour and enthusiasm infected not only the entire company, but everyone who came into contact with him. His generosity made him popular with members and staff alike.
Every week, Paolo would come to me with a new idea or initiative that he wanted permission to implement. After about the fourth or fifth time, I told him just to go for it, and let me know if it had worked—inevitably, it always did. Paolo’s hard work and dedication made sure it did.
We recently held a farewell morning for Paolo at which our Chair, David Lake, presented Paolo with an Honorary Weld Australia Life Membership.
We were also pleased to announce that the IIW had approved our request to create the Paolo Corronca Scholarship. This will fund an Italian welding engineer to work in Australia on an exchange program.
Paolo is highly respected by the Weld Australia team, our members and the broader Australian welding industry. He was an absolute pleasure to work with. Paolo is an all together lovely bloke who will be sadly missed.
On behalf of the Weld Australia team, Board and all our members, I wish Paolo well for the future.
Crittenden CEO, Weld Australia

A THANK YOU TO PAOLO CORRONCA FROM THE WELD AUSTRALIA TEAM
Bruce Cannon (Technical Publications Manager)
Paolo and I have had some great technical discussions on many issues over the years. I could never ask him a question without one coming back in return serve!
His insight into the background behind issues was amazing, as was his understanding of the application of AS/NZS ISO 3834.
I have greatly appreciated working with Paolo and benefitted from his dedication, enthusiasm and sense of humour, and have learnt much from him. He will be sorely missed.
Michael Pitt (National Manager Education & Training)
Paolo was an asset to Weld Australia. He had a real business mind and helped bring all the different parts of the business together to work collaboratively. He was extremely capable, flexible and just an excellent person to work with—a really good guy. It was a true pleasure to work with Paolo.
Michelle Bignold (National Manager, Sales and Marketing)
I had the pleasure of working with Paolo for three years. He was a wealth of knowledge on all our members, which really assisted me in my role. Paolo has had a big impact not only on our organisation, the people in it, and everyone that he has encountered along the way. A true inspirational leader of the industry.
Julie Fidler (Commercial Manager)
I miss Paolo so much! Great company and a valued colleague - ever ebullient, loud and funny but you couldn’t find a smarter guy and a harder worker. I wish him joy in every moment.
Guy Brooks (Training Manager)
Paolo was the first person to welcome me into the Weld Australia team. I am forever grateful for the support and advice he has offered me, and the friendship we have made. In addition to an amazing work ethic, Paolo is generous, helpful and questionably hilarious. On behalf of the Training team, we wish Paolo all the best on his adventures in Italy.

I had the pleasure of working with Paolo in the Qualification and Certification Department for four years. During those years, I found Paolo not only an amazing colleague, but also a person who is always willing to help others voluntarily.
Paolo’s great sense of humour helped us to carry on during the tough period of the pandemic and his creativity always helped the business unit. I wish him the best of luck in his new chapter of life.
Laya Pourabdi (Qualification and Certification Coordinator)
Paolo is the best manager I’ve ever worked with. I was so lucky to have him as my manager. His positive energy, bright ideas, laughter, and the smell of the cafes he made every single day made work so much more enjoyable! Paolo may not be present in the office anymore, but his energy will continue to inspire us every day.

QUICKSTEP TO MANUFACTURE F-35 COMPONENTS FOR NORTHROP GRUMMAN
Northrop Grumman has signed a six-year contract with Quickstep Holdings for the delivery of Australian-made components for the F-35 aerospace program. Work will be performed in Quickstep’s headquarters in Sydney, New South Wales. Northrop manufactures the centre fuselage section for all three F-35 variants.
In 2012, Quickstep joined Northrop Grumman’s global supply chain for the F-35 and has since become the global aerospace company’s largest Australian supplier for the program.
“Northrop Grumman has an unwavering commitment to help grow Australia’s sovereign defence industry,” Christine Zeitz, general manager for Northrop Grumman Asia Pacific. “Quickstep Holdings is a long-time member
of our global supply chain, providing critical capability into one of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) most important programs, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration over the coming years,” Zeitz added.
More than 50 directly-contracted Australian businesses have made significant contributions to the design and development phases of the program.
Northrop Grumman works with Lockheed Martin to design, develop, manufacture, and maintain F-35 multirole fighters for the United States and its allies. February 2022 saw the 900th delivery of Northrop Grumman’s fuselage for the program.
Quickstep is the largest private aerospace composite component manufacturer in Australia and operates in Sydney, Geelong, Melbourne, and Dallas. The company employs over 280 people.
BAE Systems Australia recently contracted AML3D to investigate the feasibility and prototyping of components to support their contract to design and build nine Hunter class frigates. The prototype components intend to offer higher strength properties while providing an alternative to traditionally cast items for future builds.
As the world’s first large-scale 3D metal printing company to be accredited by Lloyd’s Register and to secure Additive Manufacturing Facility Accreditation from DNV, AML3D is a leader in providing certified highstrength components to the Marine Industry.
The contract for prototype Hunter class components follows a commercial validation testing program, initiated in October 2020. The validation testing demonstrates AML3D’s WAM® technology is a cost-effective manufacturing solution with the potential to minimise lead-times and meet BAE Systems Australia’s internal standards for additive manufactured components.
The prototype parts are slated for delivery in the last quarter of 2022.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT PROSTATE CANCER?
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in men in Australia and the third most common cause of cancer death.
Prostate cancer happens when abnormal cells develop and grow in the prostate. These abnormal cells can continue to multiply and sometimes spread. In most men, prostate cancer is a slow growing disease. If it stays inside the prostate gland and grows slowly, it may never cause a problem. However, in some men the cancer may grow more quickly and can cause problems that can impact on their life expectancy.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) recently released the latest figures on prostate cancer incidence, mortality, and survival in Australia.
The latest forecast predicts that for 2022, Australia will record the highest number of prostate cancer cases ever recorded, with 24,217 cases expected to be diagnosed.
One in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85.
Prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates of all cancers, with 95% of men likely to survive five years or more. About 220,000 Australian men are alive today after a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Should I have a PSA test?
Men over age 50, or 40 with a family history of prostate cancer, should talk to their doctor about testing for prostate cancer using the PSA test as part of their regular health check-up.
Men should make an informed decision about testing based on the latest available evidence on the benefits and potential harms of testing and subsequent treatment for prostate cancer.

A Year in Review
While 2022 presented challenges such as supply chain issues and skilled labour shortages, Australia’s welding industry has continued to go from strength to strength. In fact, our 2022 Member Survey indicated that most fabrication businesses have a very strong pipeline of work, capacity for additional work, and rate the prospects of their business as strong.
Weld Australia members continue to lead the way in innovation, environmental sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and health and safety. We are extremely proud to be your peak body.
We’ve been busy behind the scenes at Weld Australia too. Our advocacy work paid dividends this year. Focused on issues such skill shortages, onshoring and local content procurement, renewable energy and adherence to quality standards, we generated significant media coverage and political interest.
As we acclimatised to the ‘new normal’ in a postCOVID world, our calendar of in-person events returned across the country. We also hosted a very successful and much expanded program of Welding Excellence Awards.
Our training department went from strength to strength, with over 600 students completing courses this year. Our work on the MEM2.0 project with the National TAFE Consortium continued, with pilot programs run in Western Australia. We expanded our Advanced Manufacturing School Outreach Program in New South Wales significantly, with over 80 welding simulators installed in more than 40 schools.
Finally, our VET Centre of Excellence program with Corrections Victoria at HM Prison Langi Kal Kal commenced and is already returning great results.
It’s the ongoing support from members that allows us to continue advocating for the welding industry in Australia, and we wholeheartedly thank you for your role in that this year. We hope you continue your support in 2023.
Weld Australia membership is an investment in the success of your career or your business. We will help you increase your income, decrease your costs and give you a competitive advantage over non-members.

GET INVOLVED IN THE CORRECTIONS
VICTORIA VET CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE PROGRAM
In 2022, Corrections Victoria expanded the VET Centre of Excellence model to deliver Fusion Welding to ISO 9606 certification standard to complement the Metal Fabrication industry at Langi Kal Kal prison. Federation University delivers the training program with the support of Weld Australia and on-site prison industry staff.
As part of the program, augmented reality (AR) training was introduced to expand the welding skills of the prisoner learners to meet international standards. A welding workshop sits alongside the AR training room so that participants can work on projects to use and practice their welding skills in the physical as well as virtual environments.
To participate in the program, prisoners are invited to submit an Expression of Interest and then selected through an interview process. Up to eight participants can be accommodated in the intensive 14-week program.
The VET Centre of Excellence model links participating prisoners with prospective employers and pre- and post-release support service providers. These connections provide prisoners with sustainable pathways to employment and support to reintegrate to society post- release.
One of students said: “I wanted to take part in this course to not only further my knowledge and experience of welding but to be able to give myself the ability to provide a positive, reliable, and sustainable future for my family.”
“When I am released I am keen to find as much work as possible in the engineering trade working in the railways, or similar areas that require good welders. I don’t see my life revolving around prison and I want to have real work opportunities in the community when I’m released.”
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Australia is facing a looming shortage of skilled welders—70,000 additional welders will be needed in the next 10 years.
VET training and employment pathways as part of prisoner rehabilitation could help alleviate some of these skills shortages.
The national roll out of the VET Centre of Excellence model will require commitment and collaboration from industry nationally in providing secure employment opportunities for prisoners post-release.
If you’d like to get involved as a prospective employer, click on the link below and complete this quick and easy Expression of Interest form.

SUCCESSFUL AS/NZS ISO 3834 AUDUT AT A & B WELDING IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY
Ross O’Bryan (Engineering Team Manager – East, Weld Australia) recently conducted an AS/NZS ISO 3834 Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials audit at A & B Welding in Darwin.
Established in Darwin in 1986, A & B Welding was the first company in Australia to obtain certification to AS/NZS ISO 3834.2. They remain the only company in the Northern Territory certified to the standard. A & B Welding are specialists in all alloy and carbon steel piping, fabrication and welding, their experience and technical knowledge of even the most complex fabrication and welding applications is extremely impressive.
The company operates from a custom built facility located in East Arm, which features a 2,200m2 undercover workshop and a 5,747m2 hardstand, plus offices and amenities. It is from this facility that A & B Welding delivers a range of superior quality services, including all types of pipe fabrications, from basic straight spools, through to highly complex configurations for low-pressure systems and extremely high-pressure applications.
In addition, A & B Welding has extensive experience dealing with complex specifications and offers specialised services, such as live welding, offshore and remote site work, and hydrostatic testing.
According to Ross, “At A & B Welding, quality is their culture. They live and breathe their quality system. It is really impressive to see, and clear as to why they achieved, and continue to be re-certified in, AS/NZS ISO 3834.2.”
A keen focus on quality has been key to A & B Welding’s success over the last 35 years. According to Grant Ryan (Managing Director, A & B Welding and Chair of Weld Australia’s Northern Territory Committee), “We have built our business based on quality workmanship, integrity and reputation. This is evident by the amount of repeat business A & B Welding enjoys today, signaling our clients’ confidence with our performance.”
“The Northern Territory is often a tough climate, given our remoteness to the rest of the country. By adopting principles that promote superior quality workmanship and accreditations, we’ve proved that it’s not only possible to survive, but to thrive, in the Northern Territory,” said Ryan.

STUDENTS AT ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE TRY THEIR HAND AT WELDING
Students at St Joseph’s Nudgee College also had the opportunity to try their hand at welding this month. Adam Coorey again provided training on Soldamatic augmented reality simulators, in line with ISO 9606-1 Qualification testing of welders—Fusion welding.
Another 30 students had the opportunity to undertake the training, and most performed at levels to be expected of experienced welders within two hours.
AUGMENTED REALITY WELDER TRAINING AT TULLAWONG STATE HIGH SCHOOL
Adam Coorey (Regional Training Coordinator, Weld Australia) spent some time at Tullawong State High School in Caboolture this month.
Over 30 students had the opportunity to try welding for the first time using the Soldamatic augmented reality welding simulators. The students were taught according to ISO 9606-1 Qualification testing of welders—Fusion welding. Students were given a real Weld Procedure Specification (WPS) to read and practice. By the end of the session, most of the students were able to lay virtual welds within the parameters of the WPS.
Terry Young MP, Federal Minister for Longman, visited Tullawong State High School and took up the welding challenge, giving the Soldamatics a try himself.
According to Terry, “Adam from Weld Australia was enthusiastically instructing the students on the virtual welding machine...This is an incredible piece of machinery helps train students with real skills in a safe environment. It was really exciting to see students being interested in trade practices that they may (or may not) take up in the future.”
