The beauty of Leeuwarden! A note from the mayor

As mayor of Leeuwarden I might seem biased, but I did choose the Frisian capital for a reason. Leeuwarden is a dynamic, vibrant city, the engine of the Frisian economy and culture.

Situated in a beautiful green watery area, with numerous touristic destinations. The Frisian capital is a true ‘court city’, with a stunning historical centre, a wealth of monuments, surprising stores and cosy places to have a meal and a drink. At the same time Leeuwarden offers ultra modern facilities for its residants, visitors, students and entrepeneurs. History and innovation connect in harmony and together they create a beautiful collusion.

Leeuwarden keeps working on the future, building on a succesfull year as Culture Capital of Europe. Sustainabililty, water, knowledge and culture are prioritized. At the same time investments are made to improve life quality for residents of all ages. Hundreds of thousands of international visitors, but also the inhabitants from the region, love to be surprised by everything the city has to offer. People realise that we live in the most beautiful part

of the country. Leeuwarden and its gorgeous backyard Friesland earned their spot in the top list of European destinations and Dutch tourists love to visit Leeuwarden on a city trip.

Smûk. Zo beschrijven de Friezen de hoofdstad van Fryslân. Gezellig en mooi. Leeuwarden was niet voor niets de Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa in 2018. Hier komt cultuur, gastvrijheid en gezelligheid samen. Het jaar van Culturele Hoofdstad heeft ons natuurlijk op de kaart gezet, want wie kent nu niet De Reuzen van Royal de Luxe? Leeuwarden is de afgelopen jaren dan ook uitgegroeid van een kleine, onontdekte stad tot een bloeiende toeristenstad. Wat de stad zo leuk maakt, is dat het niet te druk en te groot is qua omvang, maar dat je wel hele leuke, unieke dingen kunt ondernemen. Zo kun je de stad ontdekken vanaf het water. Dan denk je waarschijnlijk al snel aan een bootje, maar suppen is sinds vorig jaar een populaire activiteit geworden voor bezoekers. Zo ontdek je, terwijl je op je supboard staat of zit, al peddelend de stad!

Leeuwarden was European Capital of Culture in 2018 for a good reason, as it’s here where culture, hospitality and warmth meet. The year of being Cultural Capital put Leeuwarden firmly on the map –after all who has not heard of the Royal de Luxe giants? Over the years Leeuwarden has grown from a small, undiscovered city into a flourishing tourist attraction. What makes our city so great is that it’s neither too big nor too crowded and yet offers so much that is interesting and unique. For example, discovering the city from the water. You’ll probably be thinking of a boat, but stand up paddle boarding has recently become a popular activity among tourists, allowing visitors, standing or sitting, to paddle their way through the city.

Ook in 2023 heeft de stad, ondanks corona, veel bezoekers getrokken uit zowel binnen- als buitenland. De stad biedt interessante musea, een mooie historische binnenstad met monumenten en grachten en ook bijzondere moderne architectuur. In het centrum kun je een lekker dagje shoppen; in elk straatje ontdek je wel weer een leuk winkeltje. De diversiteit aan horecagelegenheden heeft voor elke fijnproever een goede hap. Probeer eens het Friese Suikerbrood (Sûkerbôle)! Een typisch Fries product, net zoals Beerenburg en Nagelkaas. Veel (horeca) ondernemers in de stad maken gebruik van streekproducten. Zo zou het zomaar kunnen dat het biertje dat je drinkt hier in de regio gebrouwen is! Naast de gerechten onderscheidt de provincie zich door de taal, het Fries. Deze taal wordt nog steeds onderwezen op de scholen in Friesland.

In 2023, despite Corona, Leeuwarden welcomed many visitors, both from within the Netherlands and abroad. The city offers interesting museums, a beautiful, historic city centre with monuments and canals, and striking modern architecture. Enjoy a day of shopping in the centre, discovering charming little shops in every street, and a rich diversity of eateries ensuring something for every taste. Try some Frisian Sugar Bread (Sûkerbôle), or the typically Frisian Beerenburg liqueur or Clove Cheese (Nagelkaas). Many food establishments deal in local produce, so you could find yourself drinking a beer that was brewed locally! Along with food and drink, the province sets itself apart with its language, Frisian. This widely spoken language is still taught in Frisian schools.

Who are we kidding, of course one day is not enough to discover Leeuwarden. Booked your extra night? Well done, here are some more tips for day two!

10:00 – Meet the city’s tiniest inhabitants: go in search of dozens of Miniature People hidden throughout the city.

12:00 – Found them all? Reward yourself with a good lunch at The Bakery Café, Bowls ’n rolls, Bahns & Boba or Bar Zelle.

14:00 – This afternoon it’s time for the ‘local’ ‘wildlife’: just a stone’s throw from the city you’ll find Aqua Zoo. A unique zoo with wallabies, tigers and mischievous raccoons.

17:00 – Back in the city it’s time for drinks. Toast with a delicious craft beer at De Markies or upgrade you rround of drinks with a game of petanque at BOEL.

19:00 – Devour a tasty pizza at the Burgemeester van Napels, build your own burger at Double B or enjoy a long meal at the Keuken van Ümit.

21:00 – Soak up some culture while you’re here! Enjoy a theatershow at De Harmonie, visit a live concert at Neushoorn or check out the adventurous Podium Explore programme at the Westerkerk.

Een frisse neus halen

ontdek de regio

Van de mooiste fietsroutes tot de knusse elf steden en het werelderfgoed van de Wadden, met Leeuwarden als uitvalsbasis ontdek je de prachtige regio! Ga bijvoorbeeld met een bootje het water op, breng een bezoek aan het prachtige dorp Grou, ontmoet de vrolijke bewoners van AquaZoo, of wandel door het nationaal park de Alde Feanen.

Liever wat actiever? Honderden kilometers aan mooie paden en routes maken van Friesland een echt fietsparadijs. Vanuit Leeuwarden fiets je bijvoorbeeld langs de kabbelende rivier de Dokkumer Ee, rijg je de pittoreske dorpjes aaneen, volg je een staten-en-stinzen-route door het uitgestrekte landschap of maak je de ‘8 van Grou’ vol; een leuke route langs verschillende pontjes in het Alde Feanen-gebied.

Voor de echte ontdekkers is de ultieme uitdaging natuurlijk de Elfstedentocht. Fiets, wandel, rij, sup, vaar, galloppeer of step langs de elf Friese steden en ontdek al het moois dat Friesland te bieden heeft. Aan het eind scoor je – op vertoon van je stempelkaart – een certificaat in het Visitor Center!

Get some fresh air discover the region

From the most beautiful cycling routes to the charming Eleven Cities and the World Heritage site of the Wadden, using Leeuwarden as your home base you can discover the entire region! For example, take a boat out on the water, visit the beautiful village of Grou, meet the cheerful residents of Aqua Zoo, or hike through the Alde Feanen national park.

Prefer something more active? Hundreds of kilometers of beautiful paths and routes make Friesland a true paradise for cycling enthousiasts. From Leeuwarden, you can cycle along the babbling river Dokkumer Ee, string together the picturesque surrounding villages, follow a staten-and-stinzen route through the green landscape or complete the ‘8 van Grou’; a fun route along various ferries in the Alde Feanen area.

For true explorers, the ultimate challenge is of course the Eleven Cities Tour. Cycle, walk, drive, sup, sail, gallop or ride your scooter along the eleven Frisian cities and discover all the beauty that Friesland has to offer. Blokhuispoort – Eeuwenlang zaten hier de zware jongens opgesloten, nu is het een creatieve broedplaats met horeca, winkels, een hostel en nog veel meer!

Experience a summer full of art and culture during Arcadia 2025. From May 17 to August 24, you can enjoy surprising theater performances, inspiring art projects, unique events, and the construction project of the year: Bouwurk. Discover remarkable locations, from the iconic leaning tower Oldehove to hidden gems in the Frisian landscape. Whether you participate or simply take it all in, this summer in Fryslân is one you don’t want to miss.

Beleef een zomer vol onvergetelijke momenten tijdens Arcadia 2025. Van 17 mei tot 24 augustus geniet je van verrassende theaterstukken, inspirerende kunstprojecten, unieke evenementen en het bouwproject van het jaar: Bouwurk. Laat je verrassen en doe mee op unieke locaties, van de iconische scheve toren de Oldehove tot verborgen parels in het Friese landschap. Of je nu meedoet of gewoon geniet: deze zomer in Fryslân wil je niet missen.

BOUWURK

In 2025 verrijst Bouwurk aan de voet van de iconische scheve toren in Leeuwarden: de Oldehove. Bouwurk wordt een innovatief gebouw gemaakt van duurzame materialen en creatieve bouwstenen. Iedereen mag meebouwen en een steentje bijdragen. Eenmaal gebouwd is het een centrum voor iedereen die een plek zoekt om te ontmoeten, te verwonderen en te maken. Dat gebouwd is met plezier, zoals je vroeger als kind vol nieuwsgierigheid en lol een toren wist te knutselen van alles wat je maar tegenkwam.

Het wordt een bouwwerk vol nieuwe ideeën en eerste keren. Met muren die deels bestaan uit bakstenen gemaakt van Friese grond. Met soep gemaakt van duurzame gewassen uit eigen moestuin en met geïsoleerde muren van schapenwol uit de regio. Zo laten we met Bouwurk zien dat het ons samen lukt om iets onvoorstelbaars neer te zetten. Dat we als mens tot enorme dingen in staat zijn, als we maar bereid zijn ons er samen voor in te zetten. Zelfs wanneer het rommelt in onze samenleving.

BOUWURK

In 2025, Bouwurk will rise at the foot of the iconic leaning tower in Leeuwarden: the Oldehove. Bouwurk will be an innovative building made from sustainable materials and creative building blocks. Everyone is invited to help build and contribute. Once completed, it will serve as a center for anyone looking for a place to meet, marvel, and create. It will be built with the same joy you felt as a child, full of curiosity and fun, crafting a tower out of whatever you could find.

It will be a structure filled with new ideas and firsts. With walls partially made from bricks crafted from Frisian soil. With soup made from sustainable crops grown in our own garden, and with insulated walls made from locally sourced sheep wool. With Bouwurk, we show that together, we can achieve the unimaginable. That, as humans, we are capable of tremendous things if we are willing to work together. Even when our society is in turmoil.

Elke drie jaar organiseert Arcadia een groots honderddaags cultureel programma in Fryslân. Tijdens dit evenement komen jong en oud samen om te genieten van indrukwekkende kunst- en cultuurprojecten, en werken we aan een provincie die we met trots door kunnen geven aan volgende generaties.

Misschien ken je ons nog als Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa 2018, toen de reuzen van Royal de Luxe door de straten trokken. Of van Arcadia 2022, met het wandelende bos.

Denk aan Bouwurk, waarbij we met vele handen de iconische scheve toren de Oldehove afbouwen tot een gemeenschapshuis voor iedereen. Samen laten we zien dat we tot geweldige dingen in staat zijn als we onze krachten bundelen.

Every three years, Arcadia hosts a grand hundred-day cultural program in Fryslân. During this event, young and old come together to enjoy impressive art and cultural projects, and we work toward a province we can proudly pass on to future generations.

You might remember us as the European Capital of Culture in 2018, when the giants of Royal de Luxe paraded through the streets. Or from Arcadia 2022, with the walking forest.

DE REUZEN

In 2018 was Leeuwarden Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa. Tienduizenden cultuurliefhebbers laten zich verbazen, verwonderen en ontroeren door de levensechte poppen van theatergezelschap Royal de Luxe (De Reuzen). ‘Magisch’, is dan ook het woord wat de meeste bezoekers van Leeuwarden gebruiken om het bijzondere weekend van 17 tot en met 19 augustus te beschrijven. Een topweekend, met 430.000 bezoekers.

DOMINO DAY

Tot 2009 werd in Leeuwarden Domino Day gehouden, een Guinness Book of Records recordpoging voor het grootst aantal vallende dominostenen. Tot nu toe staat het record nog steeds op naam van de Nederlandse bouwers.

ELFSTEDENTOCHT

Leeuwarden is het begin en eindpunt van de heroïsche Elfstedentocht, de bijna tweehonderd kilometer lange schaatstocht op natuurijs. De tocht brengt zomaar anderhalf tot twee miljoen mensen op de been. De Elfstedentocht voert langs alle Friese steden. Nu maar hopen dat het een keer koud genoeg wordt en ‘De Tocht der Tochten’ nog een keer komt. De laatste keer was in 1997.

LUCHTMACHTDAGEN

Tijdens de Luchtmachtdagen komen 280.000 enthousiastelingen zich vergapen aan straaljagers en vliegdemonstraties. Er zijn dan demonstraties te zien met Nederlandse en buitenlandse toestellen.

THE GIANTS

In 2018 Leeuwarden was the Cultural Capital of Europe. Hundreds of thousands of culture vultures came to be amazed, to admire and be moved by the lifelike puppets of the Royal de Luxe theatre company (the Giants). Described by most of the visitors to Leeuwarden as ‘magical’, the extraordinary weekend of 17-19 August attracted 430,000 visitors.

DOMINO DAY

Until 2009 Domino Day was held in Leeuwarden, a Guinness Book of Records event for the greatest number of falling dominoes. The record is still held by the Dutch contestants.

ELEVEN CITIES RACE

Leeuwarden is the start and finish of the heroic Eleven Cities Race, an almost 200 kilometre skating race on natural ice. The event attracts one and a half to two million spectators and takes you to all the Frisian cities: Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker and Dokkum. Now we’re hoping that it will be cold enough for ‘The Race’ once again.

AIR FORCE EXHIBITION

For the duration of Leeuwarden’s Air Force Exhibition, some 280.000 enthusiasts came to marvel at jet fighters and aerobatics displays. There were demonstrations by both Dutch and foreign aircraft.

Terugblik Leeuwarden

CARABOSSE

In 2020 stond de binnenstad van Leeuwarden drie dagen lang in vuur en vlam door het Franse straattheater Compagnie Carabosse. Op verschillende locaties zijn indrukkende vuurshows te bewonderen die met elkaar verbonden worden door een prachtige wandelroute waar in totaal maar liefst veertigduizend vuurpotten aan te pas komen. Het evenement is een groot succes te noemen met een bezoekersaantal van 120.000.

SERIOUS REQUEST

Tijdens 3FM Serious Request in 2013 werd onze mooie stad overspoeld door een tsunami aan gasten. Allemaal willen ze een blik werpen op de drie dj’s die zich voor het goede doel vrijwillig laten opsluiten in het glazen huis. Met een opbrengst van meer dan twee miljoen euro is de actie een groot succes.

BOSK

Bosk was als kunstproject onderdeel van Arcadia. Honderd dagen lang ‘liepen’ er meer dan duizend bomen door Leeuwarden. Zo’n 150 bakken werden dagelijks verplaatst, waardoor het bos op de ene locatie afnam en op de andere groeide. Het wandelende bos gaf de natuur een stem: wat kunnen we leren van bomen?

TOL THEATER

In april 2022 stond Leeuwarden in het teken van Tolworld. Tijdens deze voorstelling werkten internationale artiesten en Friese kunstenaars samen in de (open)lucht. De voorstelling ging over mensen die graag bij elkaar wilden zijn, maar elkaar niet konden bereiken. En dat werd uitgebeeld met licht, filmbeelden, zang, dans en veel kostuums.

CARABOSSE

For three days in 2020 Leeuwarden’s city centre was set ablaze in fire and flame by the French street theatre company, Carabosse. Stunning displays of fire were to be seen at various locations throughout the centre, linked by a stunning walking route, lined with the dazzling spectacle of more than forty thousand blazing beakers of fire. With a total of 120,000 visitors, this event was considered an enormous success

SERIOUS REQUEST

During the 3FM Serious Request event in 2013, Leeuwarden was flooded by a tsunami of visitors, who had all come to see the three DJ’s who had volunteered to be locked up in the Glass House to raise money for charity. This event was an enormous success, raising an amount of more than 2 million euros.

BOSK

Bosk was part of Arcadia as an art project. For a hundred days, more than a thousand trees “walked” through Leeuwarden. Some 150 bins were moved daily, causing the forest to diminish in one location and grow in another. The walking forest gave nature a voice: what can we learn from trees?

TOL THEATER

In April 2022, Leeuwarden was dedicated to Tolworld. During this performance, international artists and Frisian artists worked together in the (open) air. The performance was about people who wanted to be together, but could not reach each other. It was depicted with light, film images, song, dance and lots of costumes.

In Leeuwarden wonen bijzondere mensen. Nu, maar ook vroeger. Kijk maar naar de manier waarop deze stad is ontstaan. In de negende eeuw lag Leeuwarden aan de Middelzee.

Dat was een strategische plaats, want zo konden we via zee handelen tot in Rusland. Maar we hadden toen nog geen dijken en de eerste bewoners kregen regelmatig natte voeten. Wat we deden? We maakten een heuvel en bouwden daar huizen op (een terp). Probleem opgelost. Toen

de Middelzee in de 13de eeuw dichtslibde stonden de vroege Leeuwarders voor een nieuwe uitdaging. Maar ook nu werd er snel geschakeld: in plaats van handel via zee gingen we gewoon handelen in de regio. Intussen woonden de mensen nog wel op de drie terpen die eerder waren gebouwd. Niet zo handig. Daarom werden de terpen, Oldehove, Nijehove en Minnema in 1435 samengevoegd tot één stad. Hiermee kreeg Leeuwarden, als een van de laatste steden in Friesland, officieel stadsrechten.

In Leeuwarden, remarkable people have always lived, both now and in the past. Just look at how this city came to be. In the ninth century, Leeuwarden was situated along the Middelzee.

This was a strategic location because it allowed trade via the sea as far as Russia. However, there were no dikes yet, and the first inhabitants often found themselves with wet feet. What did they do? They built a hill (a terp) and constructed houses on top of it. Problem solved. When

the Middelzee silted up in the 13th century, the early Leeuwarders faced a new challenge. But once again, they quickly adapted: instead of trading by sea, they began trading within the region. In the meantime, people still lived on the three mounds that had been built earlier. Not very practical. So, in 1435, the mounds of Oldehove, Nijehove, and Minnema were merged into one city. As one of the last cities in Friesland, Leeuwarden was officially granted city rights.

stadspark de Prinsentuin. Leeuwarden werd steeds meer gezien als centrum van de regio en eigenlijk is dat vandaag de dag hetzelfde gebleven. Inwoners van kleinere steden en dorpen in Friesland zoeken regelmatig het centrum van Leeuwarden op voor een leuk dagje uit, een middagje winkelen of een goed restaurant. Hoewel het belang van Leeuwarden in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw voor de regio en provincie toenam, werd de stad vanaf die tijd landelijk gezien minder betekenisvol.

The prosperous city of Leeuwarden had to be protected against enemies. For this reason, the city was surrounded by a moat and a system of fortifications.

The moat around the city still exists today. Many of the canals with trade quays in the city center have also been preserved. However, in the 19th century, the ramparts, ravelins, and city gates became obsolete and were demolished. In the northeast part of the city, a section of the fortifi-

cations was transformed into the city park known as the Prinsentuin. Leeuwarden increasingly became regarded as the region’s center, and this remains true to this day. Residents of smaller towns and villages in Friesland regularly visit Leeuwarden’s center for a fun day out, an afternoon of shopping, or a nice restaurant. While Leeuwarden’s importance for the region and province grew in the second half of the 19th century, its significance at a national level began to decline during this time.

In the first half of the 20th century, Leeuwarden experienced explosive growth.

There was a high demand for workers’ housing, and working-class neighborhoods quickly sprang up in the area between the city canals and the ring road. In the 1960s, the city expanded beyond the ring road. The financial services district, located near the train station, was developed in the 1970s. This area boasts several architectural highlights, including the tallest building in the northern Netherlands: the Achmeatoren. This slender tower

dominates the skyline of Leeuwarden and can be seen from afar in the vast Frisian landscape.

However, Leeuwarden is not only known for its remarkable buildings. Throughout the centuries, the city has produced numerous (world-)famous figures. These include writers Francois Haverschmidt, Simon Vestdijk, and Jan Jacob Slauerhoff, politician and poet Pieter Jelles Troelstra, dancer and spy Mata Hari, and artists Hans Vredeman de Vries and Maurits Cornelis Escher.

Stiens

In het dorp Stiens, net iets ten Noorden van Leeuwarden, staan verschillende bewonderenswaardige molens. Zo wordt De Kleine Molen, ook wel de Binnema Molen genoemd, beschouwd als de kleinste achtkante molen van Nederland! De molens zijn (op afspraak) te bezichtigen. Tussen Leeuwarden en Stiens in, vind je Martenastate, gelegen in het kleine plaatsje Cornjum. Sinds de vijftiende eeuw werd de Martenastate bewoond door verschillende adellijke families, maar tegenwoordig vind je rondom de state een groot park dat zelfs een van de rijkste stinsentuinen van Nederland is!

Grou

Stiens

The town of Stiens, a little north of Leeuwarden, is home to a number of picturesque windmills. De Kleine Molen (little mill), also called the Binnema Molen, is considered to be the smallest eight-sided windmill in the Netherlands! You can visit the mills by appointment. Between Leeuwarden and Stiens is Martenastate, situated in the tiny village of Cornjum. Since the 15th century it has been inhabited by various noble familes, but nowadays a large park surrounds the property, itself one of the richest ‘stinsentuinen’ (a garden rich in trees, bushes and wild plants, usually growing around an old property or ruins) in the Netherlands.

The Princessehof is truely a feast for the eyes

In the heart of Leeuwarden’s historic city centre you find the 18th century town palace of Maria Louise van Hessen-Kassel, Princess of Orange Nassau. The Princessehof is also the birthplace of M.C. Take a moment to realize where the food you eat comes from

Located on the outskirts of Leeuwarden in a beautiful national heritage farmhouse, this site lets you experience how agriculture is intertwined with everything around us, from the design of the landscape to the origins of our food. In 2025, they’ll celebrate their 100th anniversary and open a new exhibition, giving the Friesian horse, a true icon of Friesland, a prominent new place. The story of Frisian agriculture is all around you here.

Elke donderdag is het koopavond en elke vrijdag is er op het Wilhelminaplein een warenmarkt. Ook is het in Leeuwarden iedere zondag koopzondag.

The ‘Nieuwestad’ is the centre’s main street which is divided in two by one of Leeuwarden’s many canals. Every Sunday there are shops open in the centre, but every last Sunday of the month is the official shopping Sunday. Thursday evening is late-night shopping. Don’t forget to look up in the winter evenings. Most trees in the centre are decorated with lights. Every Friday there is a market on the Wilhelminaplein, when the square is full of stalls with good food, beautiful clothes or home accessories. De Kleine Kerkstraat

Leukste winkelstraat!

De Kleine Kerkstraat komt je misschien wat bekend voor. De Kleine Kerkstraat is namelijk tweemaal verkozen tot de leukste winkelstraat van Nederland, dus het is zeker een bezoek waard. Het is niet een hele grote straat, maar dat maakt niet uit! Er zijn genoeg leuke kroegen en authentieke winkels waar je jezelf lekker in kwijt kan. De Kleine Kerkstraat is een zijstraat van de Nieuwestad.

De naam ‘Kerkstraat’ relateert aan de kerk Sint-Vitus, die in de jaren 1595 en 1596 werd afgebroken nadat de kerk door een zware storm in 1570 en 1576 was geraakt, en plannen voor een uitbreiding stillegde. De naam ‘Kleine’ contrasteert met Grote van de Grote Kerkstraat. Maar de Kleine Kerkstraat heette niet altijd zo. Eerst heette de straat Schotstraat. Deze naam werd voor het eerst vermeld in 1425 voordat het in 1540 voorkwam als de Schotstraete. In 1556 werd het in den Cleynen Kerckstraet genoemd.

Loveliest shopping street! Maybe you’ve heard of the Kleine Kerkstraat (Little Church Street). It has been voted the loveliest shopping street in the Netherlands twice, so is definitely worth a visit! It’s not a very long street, but that doesn’t matter. There are enough friendly pubs and original shops for you to lose yourself in. The Kleine Kerkstraat is a side street leading off from De Nieuwestad (the main shopping street).

The name ‘Kerkstraat’ derives from the Sint-Vitus church, which was demolished in 1595 and 1596 after it was hit by storms in 1570 and 1576, which halted plans for an extension. The name ‘Kleine’ (little) contrasts with the ‘Grote’ (great) of De Grote Kerkstraat. However, the Kleine Kerkstraat wasn’t always so named. It was originally called Schotstraat, which it was first named in 1425, after which it was changed to Schotstraete in 1540. In 1556 the name was changed to Den Cleynen Kerckstraet.

Het Gouverneurskwartier

heeft een groot en gevarieerd aanbod wanneer het aankomt op winkels, kledingzaken, en horeca. Dat mag ook wel, want het Gouverneurskwartier omvat welgeteld elf straten, waaronder Gouverneursplein, Grote Hoogstraat, Hofplein, Sint Jacobsstraat, Weerd, Eewal en Wortelhaven. Ook zitten er kunstgalerieën en coffeeshops. Naast het gevarieerde aanbod is er ook veel geschiedenis te zien, met name op het Hofplein en het Gouverneursplein. Op de hoek zit het oudste café van Leeuwarden het Oranje Bierhuis! Dit café werd opgericht in 1770! De tijd lijkt hier wel stil te staan. Even lekker genieten van de sfeer dus.

Stadhouderlijk Hof. Dit was vroeger de verblijfplaats van de Friese stadhouders voordat het een koninklijk paleis werd. Het voormalige paleis was in bezit van de koninklijke familie tot 1971. In 1996 is in het pand het hotel gevestigd, met interieur uit de 18e en 19e eeuw.

De Voorstreek

Een verrassende mix

Op de Voorstreek zijn geen grote winkelketens. Wel zitten hier een aantal speciaalzaken. Je kunt denken aan fietsenzaken, platenzaken en ga zo maar door. Op de Voorstreek staat het pand van de Centraal Apotheek, een rijksmonument. Wat niet te missen is, is de populaire ijssalon La Venezia. Hier staan Friezen maar al te graag in de rij voor lekker Italiaans ijs. Vroeger stond aan de Voorstreek het Camminga-huis dat later het Amelandshuis genoemd werd. Helaas is dit pand verloren gegaan door brandstichting.

Ook stonden in deze straat het voormalige Sint Bonifatius Hospitaal en het Diaconessenhuis. Beide ziekenhuizen werden later samengevoegd tot het Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden. De Voorstreek heeft een oostzijde en een westzijde en kreeg pas de naam Voorstreek in 1845. Aan de hand van de bruggen werden de delen van beide zijden benoemd. Zo kwam aan de oostzijde, als eerst van zuid naar noord de SintFranciscuspijp, genoemd naar het franciscanenklooster.

A surprising mix

De Voorstreek has no big chain stores, but a number of specialist shops. Think of bike shops, record stores… and so on. The Centraal Apotheek (central pharmacy), a national monument building, can be found on de Voorstreek. And you mustn’t miss the popular ice-cream salon, La Venezia, where Frisians wait in line all too happily for delicious Italian ice-cream. In earlier days the Camminga-huis, later renamed het Amelandshuis, stood on de Voorstreek, but this building was unfortunately lost to fire.

Two erstwhile hospitals, Sint Bonifatius and het Diaconessenhuis (Deaconess House) also stood here. They were later amalgamated, giving birth to the MCL (Medical Centre Leeuwarden). De Voorstreek has an east side and a west side and only gained the name Voorstreek in 1845. The sections of each side were named after the bridges, so on the east side, running from south to north, we had the SintFranciscuspijp, named after the Franciscan Monastery.

De Vijzelstraat

Somewhat hidden in the historic city center you will find Vijzelstraat, housing a group of small-scale entrepreneurs and studio-shops. Are you looking for sustainable, vintage and unique products? This is the place to go! The first Saturday of each month there is a cosy farmers market, with local small-scale producers and makers. Vijzelstraat is just a stone’s throw from De Oldenhove and citypark De Prinsentuin, and definitely worth a visit!

Iets verstopt in het historisch stadscentrum vind je de Vijzelstraat, een winkelstraatje met eigenzinnige ondernemers en atelier-winkels. Zoek je duurzame, vintage en unieke producten, dan zit je hier goed! Iedere eerste zaterdag van de maand is hier een sfeervolle boerenstadsmarkt. De Oosterstraten/ Blokhuispoort

Autentiek shoppen

In winkelgebied de Oosterstraten kan natuurlijk één straat niet ontbreken: de Oosterstraat. Dit is de oudste straat van Leeuwarden! In deze straat word je altijd met een glimlach geholpen en kun je ook terecht voor dagelijkse boodschappen bij de slager. Daarnaast kun je hier ook heel leuk funshoppen! De Oosterstraat is een combinatie van de Oude Oosterstraat en de Nieuwe Oosterstraat. De Oude Oosterstraat ontleent de naam van de positie ten opzichte van het stadscentrum. De Nieuwe Oosterstraat kreeg de naam na de ontruiming van het Galilea klooster als verlengde van de al bestaande Oosterstraat.

Verder heeft het winkelgebied ook de Blokhuispoort die is gevestigd op het Blokhuisplein. De Blokhuispoort was 180 jaar lang een gevangenis. In 2007 zat hier de laatste gevangene. Nu zit er het Alibi Hostel, Drink & Eet Lokaal Proefverlof, bibliotheek dbieb en Cellenblok H, waar allemaal creatieve mensen met eigen winkeltjes zitten.

Authentic shopping

If we’re talking about the Oosterstraten shopping district, we can’t leave out De Oosterstraat itself. It is the oldest street in Leeuwarden! A welcoming smile will greet you in every store as you do your daily shopping at the butcher. But that’s not all – there are fun shops too! De Oosterstraat is a combination of the Oude Oosterstraat (Old East Street) and the Nieuwe Oosterstraat (New East Street). The Oude Oosterstraat derives its name from its position in relation to the city centre. The Nieuwe Oosterstraat got its name as a continuation of the existing Oosterstraat when the Galilea Monastery was dissolved.

This district also comprises the Blokhuispoort, located on Blokhuisplein. For 180 years the Blokhuispoort was a prison, the last prisoner leaving in 2007. Nowadays you can find the Alibi Hostel, the Proefverlof restaurant and bar, the dBieb library and Cellenblok H, where creative stallholders sell their wares from old prison cells.
